There's stuff enough in this AAR for an entire "Catch 22 - The Sequel"...[:D]

Cap Mandrake -> L'essence de poisson (12/20/2005 2:47:49 AM)

Wait a minute. The Astoria sails around the Pacific for 5 months and never runs into anything more dangerous than a sea turtle...then 12 hrs after Lt Col Imagawa has his retirement party the ship takes two jap torpedoes in her hull. Smells fishy to me.

What Mandrake DIDN'T tell us was that Astoria was on a emergency Fast Transport mission to replenish the mysteriously low Ex-Lax supplies for a B-25 base. That, and, of course, for more prunes.

Cap Mandrake -> Take that (12/22/2005 3:54:29 AM)

The CO of the CD unit at Luganville was replaced with a full Colonel and the airbase is Level 5., still the 5 inch guns of the CD unit laid some major whoop ass on the Japs and the bombardment was remarkably ineffective. There were almost 250 aircraft at the base and only one was damaged. This had to be a disappointment for the bad guys. Oh well, tomorrow is another day. [:'(]

Anyone know if airfield level protects aircraft from bombardment damage?

I've noticed the larger the airfield, the harder it is to damage aircraft. However, a big enough bombardment will lay some major hurt on you, particularly if the airfield is overcrowded.

An overcrowed airfield will suffer more than a normal one. One the "nuclear" bombardments require recon to be flown the day(s) before. Every bombardment I did without recon was inefficient.

Also I am quite sure that the ships will first battle the CD guns and only if they "won" this part of the battle will pound the base. So in this case most shells were exchanged between shells and CD probably.

On a side note I don't think using DDs to bombard is a good idea. They are fairly vulnerable, probability to hit mines is higher from every ship and the extra shells fired probably have not a great effect.

Fishbed -> RE: Take that (12/22/2005 10:36:41 AM)

God it is indeed a very impressive Catch 22 revival, looks like the genuine one [X(] [:)]

Admiral Laurent;

What you say about engaging the CD guns first makes a lot of sense. Perhaps it was a cautious Japanese commander who retired after seeing his shiney DD get savaged.

A related question. Does fortification level affect the vulnerability of airfields, AA guns and CD guns to air and naval bombardment, or is it just for land combat?

P.S....and thanks Fishbed (NATO designation)

Cap Mandrake -> Streamer Trunk (12/22/2005 8:54:08 PM)

As was his habit in times of distress, Lt. Col Imagawa poured another two fingers worth of rum and put it to his lips. He felt the familiar burn in his mouth and a warm flush as the elxir began to work it's magic on his troubled brain. He looked a the bottle given him at his recent retirement party by the Royal Australian Navy liason to SWPac. It was a brand that was new to him, M & M Enterprises. Still, it felt good. It gave him the courage to open the old steamer trunk he kept in his quarters. He depressed two brass rivets and opened a hidden panel. A metalic ring of exactly one cubit's diameter rose slowly to a vertical position on viscous-damped hydraulics. Three gyroscopes began to spin up and the face of the ring assumed a perfect North/South orientation. A pale green light seemed to be emitted directly through the metal and the face of the ring began to look like a pool of Mercury suspended unnaturally in the vertical plane.

Imagwa had grown to admire the crew of the Astoria and he truly loved the ship. He could picture every railing, every step, even the worn spots on the captain's chair on the bridge. The US navy had been very good to him. There were, of course, very few Lt. Colonels commanding a ship in the US Navy. Still, he had a higher duty. He took another sip of fortifier and scribbled a message in uncoded Japanese on a slip of paper:

"American crusier Astoria has 6 compartments flooded but making 20 kts. Now leaving Noumea with one escort Destination Aukland. Six DD operating as ASW force out of Noumea. In port, Lousiville,
Salt Lake City, Detroit, Perth, Honolulu and 2 DD"

There was no need for cyphers or codebooks for the paper was
about to leave Noumea in the most secure fashion possible. He began to feed the paper into the ring. It disappeared with a afaint oscillating hum. He felt a transitory tingling in the hand that had held the message. He rubbed away the numbness with the opposite hand, refelexivley fingering his UCLA 1924 class ring.

First, as a caveat, i've never really conducted controlled tests, however, it does seem to me that the forts DO help in these matters. I always find myself breathing a sigh of relief once a fort level goes up, as i seem to experience fewer losses.

Terminus -> RE: Take that (12/22/2005 11:15:31 PM)

Fewer losses at your airfields, too?

rtrapasso -> RE: Take that (12/22/2005 11:16:31 PM)

That is not so clear. At best there is a minimal effect.

Cap Mandrake -> Are you done shopping yet? (12/27/2005 3:32:26 AM)

I trust everyone had a nice Christmas*.

Wonderful. Wonderful. Now back to the important things.

Remember what I said about Japanese "high Water Mark"?.....Forget I said that. The Japs are coming to take lovely and enchanting Port Moresby away form us.

Dementia is merely a cultural construct, unless you are Al Capone, of course.

Cap Mandrake -> Civilian Leadership...sheesh (12/28/2005 9:07:26 PM)

This is interesting. FDR is always thinking politically..eg., tempting the Japanese with US cruisers in the PI before the War, extra troops for Australia...but his commanders gently box him about the ears to bring him back to military or logistical reality..(Starke talking him out of risking cruisers in the PI and here, Marshall reminding him of the "Europe first" strategy, which was partly political to start with)

Here FDR is calling for 100,000 US troops and 1,000 US planes in Australia. That doesn't have a symbolic component to it, does it? Marshall counters that it will delay a Sept '43 cross-channel invasion [:D]

Cap Mandrake -> RE: Civilian Leadership...sheesh (12/28/2005 9:38:30 PM)

Here is FDR's 5/1/42 memorandum. He picks a figure of 1,000 planes (perhaps because 1,000 dollars was the original estimate for the annual cost to the Treasury for Social Security[8|]..[:-])) then he instructs the Joint Chiefs to decide on the types.

Is this any way to run a war? Does the concept of counting troops in one geographic location as part of the political process remind anyone of 2005?
