I've read several of the last posts, but I don't manage to make my opinion:
During the first months of the war is it worth enough to defend the manilla/clark field/Bataan bases, do you make the last stand at bataan or manilla ?
The historical choice has been a retreat in bataan isn't it ?

I normally will hold at Bataan after just about everything else is lost on the big island. I try to move whats left of the better units back there if I can.

But I always try to slow e'm down in PI so as too keep the jap player from gaining to much ground to soon.[:D]

but the lost of clarkfield cut the way from manilla to bataan and then the us troops are divided in two smaller armies...

Manilla is the best place to stand because its urban, thus giving the defense a X2 defense.. IMO

evacuate bataan via clarkfield seems to be the best way to stand a long time in PI ?

Don't forget that 2x PI divisions arrive in Baatan:12 and 23 days into no variable re-inforcements. So if you give it up too early you might miss out. Don't forget that Manila has only one fort level while Clark Field has four and Baatan has 3.

Yeah, my experience has been that Manila is the best place to try to make your last stand. If you can sneak any supply convoys in, they will unload much more quickly at Manila. This bonus is on top of the previously mentioned urban terrain defense bonus. Also, I have never seen the Bataan CD unit firing at invasion TFs passing tough to lnad at Manila, but the Manila CD unit has been very good at hammering those TFs. All this leads me to believe that evacuating Bataan to build up Manila is the best move. You must do it early enough to prevent getting trapped in Bataan (as well, if you do it early enough, the supplies at Bataan will be moved to Manila/Clark).

Sharkosaurus rex -> RE: strategy in PI (6/6/2005 8:07:30 PM)

If you defend at Clark first then retreat to Bataan your inital defence is in non-malaria hex then you retreat to a malaria hex (Bataan). If you can hold up the Japs then they are degrading for attacking and in the malaria so the Jap units will take longer to recover for their next op. If you defend in Manila, both sides are in non-malaria hex so Japs will be fresher after the seige.

Hi all, the manual gives the terrain modifier for urban as x4. Is this correct or is it actually x2?

Given my experience with the chinese in Chungking (also urban) I'd say it's 4x
