Hello, Most of the gamers are very young nowadays. Well, I am very interested how old is the regular WAW player. Because of the fact that WAW is a turn based game without frills, I think that most of us are "older". Unfortunately, I can't start a regular poll. Thus, I only start a normal thread instead. Perhaps one of the moderators is so nice and turns this thread into a real poll. Well, I am 32 years old. I started with computers in 1985, using a C64 and playing "Storm across Europe" and "Colonial Conquest". Anyone remembers these games?? [:)] Ciao Frank

56, yesterday. First war game I ever picked up was Avalon Hill's ''1914''. Daunting to say the least. But I did complete 1 game. That was about 1971 and have been hooked ever since. Prior to then, it was all Strat O Matic baseball, but I thought I needed a change of pace. It's so great to have computer war games now, especially these ''good'' ones that come along.

42 - Add me to the Avalon Hill and Strat-O-Matic crowd. I started with AH's D-Day and Midway back in the '70s. Also France '40, Afirka Korps, Panzerblitz, Russian Campaign and of course, 3rd Reich. GGWAW is the closest to 3R that I've seen for the PC. Early computer favorites were Midway and Sink the Bismark for the Apple IIc.

35 here. Colonial Conquest - now there is a blast to the past. I can remember playing that hotseat with about 4 other buddies back in high school. That was a great game.

I'm 38. My first computer game was Ultima 6 and my first war game was an outstanding title IMO called Age of Rifles. Man, I miss that game. Makes me wish I still had my DOS 486 [:D]

54. It was the spring of 66 at Gulfgate shopping center in Houston Tx. Browsing a hobby shop, there was AH's DDAY, and the rest is history. Damn that 7-4 2nd Panzer Division counter was hard to kill.

32 here. wow, never imagined that im the (or at least one of) "youngest" player(s) ... esp. im playing BF2 and keep getting slaughtered by the kids [:(] but i think only ppl of our age (>30) have such WWII knowledge to know what they are doing and really enjoy the amt of thinking in this game. my first war game was koei's "romance of the three kingdoms 1" in late 80's (?) (back to my high school days ...) AN

Greetings, I'm 46. I stumbled across Panzerblitz in 73 or 74. Wasn't until I was in college, though, that I could find anyone to play it with! Had a few unmemorable games for the C64 in the early 80's, but couldn't really find any real computer war games (as would be recognize today) until the mid/late 80's. Eventually played a submarine game called Red Strom Rising on an Amiga computer. Also had some sort of a tactical East Front game for it, too. A friend of mine did set up all the dice rolls for Yaquinto's "88" on an Atari in 1982. Anyone remember Yaquinto and all their tables and dice rolling? Something like three dice rolls on three diferent tables just to see if you even hit something, much less did any damage-that was several other rolls. Ah, computers. How "simple" they've made things (LOL!). I do remeber there was also some sort of "Squad Leader" type game in the early mid 80's that was pretty good. Sorry, can't remember the title. Maybe someone else does. All I remember was that most of the causlties were from shock (one of your squad would get hit and go into x% of shock).

I think that most young kids, especially those <20 years think that WAW is boring due to the fact that there is no "action". These kids prefer Battlefield 2 or C&C Generals. By the way: my wife is 25 years old and she says that WAW is very boring. I could not persuade her to play this game with me. I tried everything, no chance. Instead, I had to play Counterstrike with her.[:(] Ciao Frank

Hi guys, I'am 36... quite young [:)] Started computer wargames with Apple IIe : War in Russia, designed by... guess who ? Gary Grigsby's himself ! [;)] Anyone remember this game ? Btw, my girlfriend plays Heroes of Might of Magic... I guess it is because of the "dressing thing" with fashion clothes and shoes (armor and boots) and cute jewels (magical rings) [:D]

34 and happy. First game was the old Third Reich. Then Axis and Allies with friends in the '80's. Then off to college where I discoverd my favorite game World in Flames. I prefer the turn-based games. My reflexes were never good.

36, and an old school gamer. Started way back with: Risk, Squad Leader, Fortress America, Axis & Allies,and Dungeons & Dragons Then stuff like: Civilization.. 1, 2, 3, and about a billion miscellanous PC titles... World At War for now... and loving it. Excellent game here.

I loved that little game. I poured so many hours into it and played it over and over. I've had this game sicne it's release and I just can't get a good feeling for it. Hardly touched it. I have high hopes for the ACW title though. Oh BTW I am 27 and I started wargaming when I was about 10. Gary's Kampfgruppe was the first title....

37 here, Started also with a C-64 even with dataset [>:] I played many genres of games from RGP�s, economic games etc but my favourite are strategic based games, turn based but also RT....titels coming in my mind are.... History linie 1914-18,CIV 1+2+3, Age of Rifles, Risk, Axis and Allies, The Operational Art of War 1+2, Battle Island 1+2,Vietnam, Uncommon Valour, Panzergeneral 1+2+3D+4, Star General, Master of Orion 1+2, Dune 1+2, Command & Conquer 1+2, Combat Mission,Strategic Command,Hearts of Iron 1+2,Europa Universalis 1+2, Victoria ......only to name some....[:D] Waiting for Empire in Arms now !!! one of my favourite board games i played.

I'm 29. I started really getting strategy games on the Spectrum 48k about 1985. Rebelstar 1 & 2, Lords Of Midnight, R.T. Smith's series of Arnhem, Desert Rats and Vulcan, being the most notable. In Amiga days, RTSs came in like Populus or Dune 2, but I moved back to harder wargame stuff when I got a PC as I felt so many RTSs were nothing but exercises in rapid mouse clicking. Gaming has changed over the years. In the early days, home computer games tended to be quite slow (even the action/arcade ones) compared to nowadays, and stuff like board games were more common as computers were rarer. I think kids are more attracted to flashy, short-attention span stuff and nowadays I think it's exacerbated by the fact many only experience a culture of console and console-style games, bypassing board games and slower PC material entirely.

47, this is my second reply to this post. I just wanted to say were I started. Well it was with Panzerblitz and Richtofen's War (Board games). Went on to War in Europe and Squad Leader. First PC game was on a Radio Shack (not Tandy) PC with like 64k ram, lol. It was a game by Avalon Hill microcomputer games called Telegard. Fantasy Dungeon delving. You loaded the game from a cassette deck! Favorites now are WAW, Decisive Battles Series, and Dominion 2 (by the way is the best Stategy game out there). I didn't think I would say that about a fantasy game, but that sucker is deeeeeeep!

I'm 44. Been playing games since Tactics II, way back around 1974? Then Third Reich, Panzer Leader, Arab-Israeli Wars, Squad Leader, Russian Front, War and Peace, and lots of others. Lately, for those that know me on the other boards, I have been consumed with Strategic Command 2 and Anglo-German War. I HAVE played through a few games of GGWAW as WA and Russians, and wish I could say I've played more. So many games, so little time. Oh well. [;)]

I'm 28. When I was 10 or 11 one of my friends had some WWI fighter dueling game where you each moved and then cross-referenced your positions and headings and looked up a page in a book to see a picture of the other fighter as seen from yours, along with your chances to hit. Don't remember the name. I haven't seen anything like it since. By 14 I was playing Europe Aflame, Advanced Third Reich, WWII: Pacific Theater of Operations, Arab Israeli Wars, and a bunch of miniatures rules that I got from library books. At that time I hadn't played many computer games. Genghis Khan, CHQ, and some generic Nintendo wargame. When I was younger, I liked the really complex ones best. As I grew older, I tended more towards Axis & Allies and other simpler, quicker games. GGWaW is a perfect balance for me. Quick and easy, but not too abstract. BTW, Age of Rifles didn't run on my Win95 PC, but it ran fine on my Win98 one. Haven't tried it on 2000 or XP, but it might work. I still play WCS II: Tanks (although I have to use DosBox, else the graphics scramble).

I'm 45. Started with Squad Leader probably around '81-82. Then came Third Reich and a host of others. Started to make own games in the early '90s (for personal use, of course). I've just finished a 90x90 hex map of the 1815 Campaign, so we're still going strong over here.

I'm 55. Started way back around 1960 with Milton Bradley's Stratego, Battle Cry (American Heritage game of the Civil War) and Broadsides. Then found Avalon Hill's Tactics II, Waterloo, Battle of the Bulge and the rest of their line. I can remember when there were less than a dozen wargames for sale in the entire world. Been buying games ever since including having a subscription to SPI's Strategy and Tactics for several years. Have hundreds of board games and dozens of computer games. Haven't been buying many wargames (board) in quite a while but I do play Advanced Squad Leader every week. Got into computer games when I got my first IBM clone. It was a 25 meg processor with a 20 meg hard drive. Wow have times changed. I'm on my sixth computer, a Pent IV at 3 gigs with a 200 gig hard drive. Amazing.
