Distiller -> The problem with this game (8/1/2005 10:55:00 AM)

You know what the problem is?

It's inherently FUBAR!

There is basically nothing that isn't stupid or logically screwed.
Only thing that - more or less - works is carrier combat.
The rest? Fugitboutit. Gives hex-games a bad name.

We (my pardner and I) think we'll likely quit it. No fun stumbling from one idiocy to the next.
Those new shock attack rules helped a lot with this decision, as it's now impossible to take a well defended atoll, there's no point in going on.

Last post of mine this was.
My regards to the community!

Good riddance [;)]

afspret -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 11:28:05 AM)

Yea, don't let the proverbial door hit you and your pardner in the keaster on the way out!

gunner333 -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 11:32:32 AM)

Seems that a lot of people get crazy because of this game. And also seems all of them loose badly when playing h2h. Play AI and you got some really joyful time.

Zecke -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 12:38:11 PM)

The only problem with this game is when you have-found a really good oponet as i have (will-willie), he just kill me more than 700 pilots and planes and i couldn`t even sink the BB (washington) that the several stikes where launched,,

So thanks william[sm=bow.gif][sm=bow.gif],, no more favors will be,, thats is the last i got a little bad lucky,, bad you did and BIG GOOD MOVEMENT

SO the only problem is when you find a really hard opponent[:'(]

Your are right. I am playing with Moses now. The guy is a Darth Vader of the land combat. But recently he is doing really good with his bombardment TF too. Smashing Tarava and escaping from my KB. This is insane, I am gonna quit it. [:D]

Well re-run that last turn, sure I will do a LOT worse than our last turn where I got lucky and you lost 700 planes. 1 BB, 3 CA's and 4 DD's (I never knew how many planes I lost, by the way)...........

Just watch that strike size rule from now on and you will do okay...

Aaah, the good old days... When men were men, sheep were nervous, and computer data was stored on cassette tapes.

I miss the challenge of positioning the tape just right....then reading up on the game manual while in the background went the sounds of EEEEEEEEEEE.....AAAAAAAAAAAA....EEEEEEEE...AAAAAAA...EEAIAAEEEAIII.....'blip'

time to play!

Terminus -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 4:22:57 PM)

Don't forget all the flashing strips of colour on the screen! Sticking a screwdriver through that itty-bitty hole on top of my Commodore Datasette was sooo interesting and technical! [:D]

I pity all the poor 18-20 year olds who'll never have that chance!

For me it was:

Commodore 16 (remember that one?) to
Commodore 128 to
Amiga 500 to
PC (of which I'm now on my fifth)

atari ?? ----> philips g7000-----> c 64 -----> amiga 500+ -------> Pc

Nikademus -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 4:38:22 PM)

Atari 400 ---> Atari 800 ----> IBM PC 8088 ---->486PC -----> Pentium -----> P2 ---->P4

Cartidge ----> Cassette -----> Floppy disk ------> Hard disk ------> CDROM/DVD

ah....the march of progress.....

Terminus -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 4:40:35 PM)

Gotta love the technology curve, right? [:D]

Nikademus -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 4:50:21 PM)

oh yeah...

Carrier Force -----> Carrier Strike -----> Pacific War ------> Uncommon Valor -----> War in the Pacific.

PzB74 -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 5:01:08 PM)

Warship -> Conflict in the Pacific -> Action Stations - Carrier Strike - Pacific War - Uncommon Valor - > War in the Pacific.
...and that's just the Pacific theater!

My top C64 remembrance list [&o]

1. Blue Max
2. Fort Apocalypse
3. Beach Head

Remember that I got a tuning cassette and screwdriver! Really amusing

Terminus -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 5:05:09 PM)

Yeah, I had one of those tuning tapes, too... Always ended up turning the screwdriver just that extra 1/100th of a degree, anyway.[:D]

Nikademus -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 5:08:00 PM)

Another popular game path.....

Eastern Front -----> War in Russia (Atari 8-bit) ------> Kampfgruppe -----> Second Front ------> War in Russia (PC) ----->Steel Panthers ------> Steel Panthers 2 ------> Steel Panthers 3 -------> Steel Panthers:WWII -------> War in Russia, Matrix project -----> Steel Panthers WAW -------> Steel Panthers MBT ------> WINSPMBT. ---->Combat Leader? (someday.....hopefully???)

Speedysteve -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 5:38:50 PM)

Ah good old days.

My first was a spectrum then onto C64. Some great games on there. I loved Kampfgruppe, USAAF and then tere was War in the South Pacific. USAAF has to be my top from those times though.

RevRick -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 5:51:21 PM)

Ah... the good old days...

Action Stations. Now, I still have that game, and one of these days when I get the old 486 with DosShell on it a place to sit, I will ramp that up again. I really wish Matrix would get ahold of that and rework the data to a modern tactical surface action game.

Old path. D-Day in 1962; France '40; Wooden Ships, Iron Men; Panzer Leader; Pacific War (board game); Squad Leader; Bismarck; Submarine; Gettysburg; War in the Pacific (board version) - (took a hiatus during Grad School from all games) - then got into computer games with some rather remarkably forgettable shooters, until some early versions of a D-day game came along - then found Pacific War & Actions Stations. Glory, Hallelujah. Then got into a whole mess of them and a big mess with wife because of expense and time. War in the Pacific is really all I have time for now, besides keeping up with the Dolphins.

Shalom

Nikademus -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 6:27:14 PM)

Action Stations was interesting and certainly had the best squadron/fleet level representation in terms of command control but for me, Warship/Battlecruiser remains my favorite because it essentially played more like Steel Panthers letting you see all the action right down to the shell hit and Hit location which was very exciting to watch. Many hours of enjoyment.

I keep holding the candle out that Gary will change his mind and revisit this game someday. Fighting Steel has been massively improved thanks to NWS's efforts (now at version 10.0) but the limiations of the real time 3D game engine remain.

another path!

Fighter Command ------> USAAF -----> Talonsoft's Battle of Britian -----> Bombing the Reich -----> Brain stroke after trying to sift through BTR's spreadsheet data.

Speedysteve -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 6:40:03 PM)

LOL Nik [:D]

You're clearly talking from personal experience there.

Battle Stations was a very good game. I liked that

Nikademus -> RE: The problem with this game (8/1/2005 6:41:41 PM)

Indeed....even Bomber Harris had a staff to help him plan missions! [X(]
