Aawulf -> Mines vs. subs (9/9/2005 5:49:29 AM)

Thus far, my mine warfare ventures have been catastrophic at best. Seems that my ships are more magnetic than my enemies' in that my vessels have struck more of my mines during retirements with idiotic routing than has the enemy. Additionally, the enemy subs seem to be immune to minefields because they pass through high density hexes regularly without incident.

Since my real target of my mining is the enemy subs, I need to know if I am wasting my time and resources. Are subs safe from mine fields in this game?

Twotribes -> RE: Mines vs. subs (9/9/2005 5:55:27 AM)

Generally yes. They have a chnace to strike mines but I suspect it is much lower than the chance a surface ship will strike one. My experience is that unless you have a bazillion mines they are nearly useless even for surface shps.

EUBanana -> RE: Mines vs. subs (9/9/2005 6:33:16 AM)

I hear you re. your catastrophic effects.

I mined a Jap base with about 600 mines or so, and then did a battleship bombardment of it to catch the ships in port, and BB Idaho caught a mine and is now in port for six months. Bah.

So bombarding battleships really can strike mines, but only if they are your mines...

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: Mines vs. subs (9/9/2005 8:49:09 AM)

i've just badly damaged an allied dutch sub with my mines in the Malacca strait. It can be done, but the chances are really few

Aawulf -> RE: Mines vs. subs (9/10/2005 6:19:07 AM)

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad there is evidence that it is possible and relieved that I am not alone in sabotaging friendly assets.

Regards,

Michael Fleshman

BBs never hit mines with "Escorts don't bombard option". They are bombarding from a long range. if that option enabled they will move closer, so will get a chance to hit a mine.

Feinder -> RE: Mines vs. subs (9/10/2005 7:11:45 PM)

Yes, subs can hit mines. I had a raider TF of subs land at an enemy base, which was mined. One of my subs did hit a mine, and ended up sinking before making it to port. I don't see many mine hits tho, more of an annoyance than anything else (way it should be). You probably have a higher chance to hit mines during "close in" missions, like landing, close bombard, etc. But patrolling probably was assigned a lower chance, since it's farther out.

I don't think this is true, as I never set escorts to bombard, and my battleship hit a mine.

A slightly unusual situation though, as it was an offensive minefield that I myself had placed, rather than a defensive one.

yes they will, I had BB Fuso hit one (or was it Yamashiro) off Noumea in my PBEM vs Andy Mac

Halsey -> RE: Mines vs. subs (9/11/2005 1:56:45 AM)

I thought everyone already knew this.[:D]

Never ever send one of your TF's into an enemy base hex that you have mined.
All minefields that are not in a friendly base are hostile.
It's been like this since UV.[;)]

Raverdave -> RE: Mines vs. subs (9/11/2005 8:03:38 AM)

Yes subs CAN hit mines..........I had 4 subs in a minelaying TF move to truk to lay mines and two of them hit jap mines in the same turn.[X(]

Mike Solli -> RE: Mines vs. subs (9/11/2005 4:51:14 PM)

I lost one of the Japanese minelaying subs on 7 Dec 41 to a British mine.[sm=00000018.gif]

What's the probability of 6 BBs bombarding a port with 8000 mines to hit one?
Was done to me two times. No hits. I conducted 3 bombardments against mined port (Batavia) (by my own minelayers, so its around 1000 mines there). No hits.

You also bombarded Gili-gili with 7000 of my mines and no hits ... I've been told "working as designed" and that designers intended that bombardments be "almost" immune to mines ...

worr -> RE: Mines vs. subs (9/12/2005 7:52:35 PM)

The most productive mine attacks for me have been when I hit my own. The enemy can sail in and out of the same port, but I usually hit my own as the IJN player.

Oh I know that - but i assumed that the people here who said mines wouldnt hit a bombarding force with escorts set to not fire were right.

These people were wrong. Idaho got mined. I won't do that again. [;)]

I was wrong saying they NEVER hit the mines. How about 0.01% chance to hit a mine?

Bombardment is the only way to shut down enemy airfield. And it is the only way to suppress the artillery during the landing. And it is the only way to kill engineers, and make possible to capture resources intact. It is the only mean for Japanese to dissuade Allied player from concentrating 1000 aircrafts in one place. And defensive minefields don't work against bombardments.

May be offensive minefields are treated differently by the game, as both your cases involved your own offensive minefield at the target base... Both my hits with subs were caused by offensive minefields too... So who really knows except developers...

{Nodding head silently in acknowledgement of being a member of that club... but will never admit it out loud!}

Indeed, I was making regular daily bombardment runs to Noumea for about a month. two 3 BB TF's one day and one 4 BB TF the other day. You can work out the percentages yourself [:'(]
