For the stock scale buffs like me, here's one to the standard WitP stock game scale. Actually I couldn't find a length anywhere so I guestimated. But it should be close to scale. [8D]

There is great news for us few remaining "stock scale buffs", my number 1 favorite ship artist Big B is back on the job after working on his mod and starting to work on DDs now! He sent me his first one and it looks GREAT! He's really got them nailed down...1000 times better than the stock graphics! [:)]

Add one more - I love correct scaling. But it's quite a problem as the smaller ships loose so much detail.

Perhaps large-as-possible sides and scaled shills.

Now, all we need is someone to rescale all of the stock, CHS, RHS, etc artwork.

Volunteers???

What is the 'stock scale' per pixel anyway?  I recall seeing it somewhere, but I can't remember now.  In the last few days I've started messing around with scale, but nothing serious.  It's more along the lines of DD=100-120 pixels,  CA=130-150 pixels etc.

these are the scale values that TankerAce used
No real measure ment per se, but my base rule is the width of the icon (since it is only a few pixels larger than an Iowa class BB) is roughly 860ft. Since each Icon is 200 pixels wide, subtract the 2 pixels for the black border leaving 198 pixels, at roughly 860 feet, is roughly 4.34 feet per pixel.

So, based on that rough estimate, a 500ft long ship is about 116 pixels long.

The best way for me though is just to compare ships, i.e. a 330 foot monitor should be the same lengthwise as a destroyer, or a 500 foot long carrier around the length of a medium light cruiser. Its not perfect, but it is fairly accurate.

Somewhat off-topic, I'm wondering: how do you artistic types do your work? Do you do drawings with art tools on paper or canvas and scan them in, or do you draw directly into Photoshop? I ask because I'm trying to illustrate a little game I've written, and while I have some drawing talent, I have no clue how to begin.

I wish I were that talented. I might be making decent money if I could do it from scratch.

I start with someone else's drawing of either a ship or plane (there are a lot of sources on the Net for that) and then, since I only have MS Paint for drawing, shrink it down to the correct size I want with MS Publisher. This gives me a basic template to work from in the case of ships. In the case of planes this will often give a fairly decent image on it's own, independent of any extra added touches. Once the image is to the correct size, I save it in Publisher as a bit map image.

Once the image is shrunk down to the correct size, I open it in MS Paint and add details to make them look more presentable. I do this more so with ship sides than planes sides. Ship sides are harder to keep a good image when they are shrunk so small so they take some extra work to touch up. Plane sides OTOH seem to retain more of their distinctive features when reduced and therefore require a little less touching up.

Conversely, plane sides seem harder (at least for me) to touch up than ships because the ships are so small it doesn't take as much talent to make them look fairly presentable. Plane sides OTOH definitely require more talent to add highlights such as shadows and bright areas (if they are not already visible in the image I'm using).

I have done one plane side completely from scratch, and that is the Ki-64 Rob. I started with a line drawing and from there added color myself, however, the plane is silver, making it easier to work with. Also I did dable with a B-25C, changing its color a little to make it more satisfactory.

Other than that it's mostly a matter of copying a more talented artist's pre-existing art work. [:o]

I usually use a similar approach to Gary. It's a lot easier to use an existing drawing, although I have done several from photos or line drawings.

Hi,

I'm wondering if I could get some help with an art project for my Empire Ablaze mod. I've replaced quite a few planes in the mod with either variants of existing planes or experimental planes which weren't produced but could have been. Most of the variants can be accomodated by using the original plane side and plane top art but a number of the new planes look completely different from anything that is currently in-game.

I was wondering if anyone was interested in doing a few plane sides and tops as my artistic ability is about nil. Also I notice a number of blank BMPs in the Japanese and American plane art files... Can these be used in-game or is there some reason they must remain blank?

Oh I'd also be interested in having a couple of ship sides done as well for two new Japanese ships types I'm adding to the mod.

Well, using the RHS EOS artset I need the following:

1. For the G9M ( bitmap 39) copied into bitmap 76 with the ocean just underneath it and, possible, a hint of an underbelly Long Lance ( this is the torpedo-bomber version of the Me-264).


2. Ki 115 at bitmap 13.  Here's a link with some pics including a colour one. I like the worn out look as this plane is intended to be a thrown together single-use kamikaze http://www.ijaafphotos.com/jbwki1151.htm


3. G8N at bitmap 77.  http://www.ijnafphotos.com/jbwg8n1.htm Whenever I've seen colour pics it has been in a horrible yellow colour. Since it is an army bomber I presume a greenish upper half is more reasonable but you'd know more about that than I.


4. Ki-93 at bitmap 74. http://www.samoloty.ow.pl/str089.htm Ideally I'd love to have the colour picture on this page shrunk down and maybe flipped so that it could be used. I think the picture is really evocative.


5. Tina.. Is it possible to do a tina in flight? The pic of the tina on the ground has always bugged me. It is bitmap 40.


6. Ki-45 II at bitmap 1. This is a single seater version of the Ki-45 I so something just hacking away the back of the cockpit would be nice. Apart from that it can be pretty much identical.


7.  Ki-219 Uhu at bitmap 53. This is, essentially, the Hs-219 put into production by Japan.


8. G7M at bitmap 78... This one is also unused and the G7M is currently represented by the G4M even though it would have looked quite different.



As for ships... I'm looking for some kind of weird requests... They would all be sort of custom-builds.

1. Mogami class CA with big turrets removed and replaced with a triangular pagoda-like structure in front mounting multiple 3.9 inch turrets, a central raised pedestal behind the bridge mounting lots of 40mm and 25mm mounts. The bridge is very low and the pedestal is actually slightly higher. No funnel... I have read about experiments which had smoke funnelled along the sides of the ship to vent either down into the water or gradually so as not to obscure vision.  Then the same arrangement at the back of the ship with more tiny gun mounts (40mm and 25mm) along the side.

This is probably undoable. If it can't be done then that's fine. I was looking at bitmap 166 for this ship.

Is this worn enough for you? I can change the level of damage/wear if you want differnet. Also a G9M that I had stashed away on the harddrive. I have got the topwork for the Ki-115 somewhere, I'll try and track that down for you as well.

I've emailed a few files to you mate. Whilst I'm here, I like what you've been doing with the auxiliary ships, do you have any plans to do the Royal Navy types? I've done a few myself, but ships aren't my strong point.
