m10bob -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 1:31:04 PM)

Ryan was airborne...........

Terminus -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 2:09:04 PM)

I forget, was he 101st?

Speedysteve -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 3:02:37 PM)

506th of 101st I believe. Was it E company?

Yamato hugger -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 3:21:26 PM)

No, Easy company was Band of Brothers. Ryan was in Baker or Charlie company (Im old, I forget).

Speedysteve -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 3:45:23 PM)

Could be right there. BoB would certainly obscure things in my mind andi'm youngish [;)]. Was certainly 506th Rgt, 101st though.

Sorry to comment so late on this thread but i was away for the weekend. I liked SPR; however, it seems to be pretty heavily critcized. How does Spielberg show sympathy/justification for a war crime? He sure doesn't glorify the two soldiers shooting prisoners that Hanks' character sees at the beginning of the film. I don't think Spielberg tries to justify Opham whacking the guy that he previously helped save. IMO the scene is about how his exposure to combat has turned a guy that wouldn't think of hurting anyone and has an idealistic and clear view of what is right and what is wrong (and is probably more dangerous to the allies w/ a gun than the germans), into a killer with no remorse. In other words war is, well . . . bad. I don't think Spielberg was making a statement on Christianity by only having Jackson praying to kill people.

I liked the final battle scene best, showed pretty well the good and bad points of armor in built up areas. Someone said that they found it unrealistic or didn't like it because it had a 20-1 kill ratio of attackers to defenders. Only 3 defenders survived what looked like a battle between 20-25 rangers and paratroopers against about a platoon of probably recce or pz grenadiers w/ 4-6 afvs. It didn't seem too lopsided to me. Wish they had shown a Jug instead of a Mustang in the air attack scene, however.

On other war movies:

Didn't like Gods and Generals and Gettysburg much. Couldn't get past the fake beard fest. Berenger looked like he had a badger staplegunned to his face.

Will not discuss PH

Hated Kelley's Heroes, Born on the 4th of July, Enemy at the Gates, Sink the Bismarck, Midway

Liked Platoon, Longest Day, Great Escape, Patton, A Bridge too Far

Loved TRL, Das Boot, Seven Samurai, 12 O'clock High, Paths of Glory, All Quiet on the Western Front (both versions), Cross of Iron, Siege of Firebase Gloria (the acting is awful but R. Lee saves the day), a movie i saw in Italy about the Folgore division, i think, but have no idea what the name is, Tora Tora Tora and, of course, Hot Shot

Yamato hugger -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 9:27:40 PM)

How can you hate Kellys Heros? There are so many quoteable lines in that movie [:D]

("I dont need you. 50 feet of bridge I can pick up almost anywhere. Schmuck")

As for Saving Private Ryan, perhaps there wasnt really a message there. Maybe it was a case of "this is war, these things happen". Everyone under fire at some point in their lives face a moral dilemma and right or wrong it often haunts them the rest of their lives. This is why combat vets dont like to "tell war stories". Because it shows their weakness. Their moral remorse.

Speedysteve -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 9:44:04 PM)

A further thing I meant to mention re: SPR is regarding the battle scenes. I remember on Christmas Day 5 years ago I showed the film to one set of my grand parents. They were awe struk at the realism/brutality of the actual combat that was shown. Especially in the first 30 mins.

They still prefer films like 12 O'Clock High but they actually appreciated that here was a war film showing the blood and guts element.

Three things bugged me about that final battle...

1. The advancing Germans would've taken out likely spotting sites long before they entered the town with their tanks (i.e. the tower where the sniper was hiding)

2. The German tanks advanced through the town well before their supporting infantry....

3. Not once did I see the German tanks MGs fire

Oh, and 4. "It's a P-51, sir. A tankbuster!"[8|]

Okay, we need a "Quotes by Forum Members" thread, with this as the first entry! Glad I'd just swallowed my mouthful of Diet Coke when I read it.

People don't like Kelly's Heroes????!?!?!? Stop with the negative waves moriarity, stop with the negative waves.

Terminus -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 10:17:10 PM)

Sorry, didn't like it much either. Too weird...

Tankerace -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 10:18:31 PM)

I got bored the other day playing Pacific Fighters, so I decided to fly my P-40B like Ben Affleck in PH.... So, I jerked on the stick, stalled, made a crater in the ground, and stared at my computer screen wondering why I didn't get revived to see my girlfriend who had cheated on me with my best friend.

In all seriousness though, if you want a good movie with awsoem a/c sequences, see Battle of Britain hands down. "Repeat please! Repeat please!" If you want to see a dumbass movie about dumbasses flying dumbass training P-40s, watch PH.[:D]

Tankerace -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 10:21:32 PM)

Another good aerial movie is Fighter Squadron, made in 1949 with Robert Stack. What is better for a Jug fanboy like me than a ton of P-47s shooting down P-51s painted like Messerchmitts.

Terminus -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 10:23:33 PM)

"Battle of Britain" is fantastic. One of my favourite scenes is where Richard Burton takes the rookie replacement pilot up for training, and two of the other pilots in the squadron look at them walking away, going "tackatackatackatacka!!!".

Tankerace -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 10:25:38 PM)

"Spring chicken to sh***hawk in one easy lesson."

"You can teach, MONKEYS to fly better than that!"

Speedysteve -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 10:26:12 PM)

Agreed guys. BoB is a classic war film. Nice to see some genuine flying WW2 aircraft in there....

Terminus -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 10:27:47 PM)

Even if the 109s and 111s were Spanish.

Tankerace -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 10:29:35 PM)

I have a book on Spitfires, and there was an interview with a pilot (I don't have it handy, so I don't remember the name). He was sort of an advisor for the movie, and he said they had a Spit II, a Spit IA, and several Mk IXs, XIVs, and so on for use. He said of the RAF pilots they had fly them, all of them wanted the Spitfire II over the rest, saying that it handled far better than the other marks.

Skyros -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 10:54:14 PM)

BoB also has a great sound track.

And that makes them not genuine WW2 aircraft?

Przemcio231 -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 11:21:33 PM)

Hey there is an war movie made by poles about Italian Soldier its called "Giuseppe in Warsaw" and this movie is grat it was shot somewhere in the 60's i think... but its just grat[:D]

Spanish 109's used the British Merlin engine.

Crimguy -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 11:25:48 PM)

One more that's terrific that no one mentioned is The Blue Max with George Peppard. Not always realistic, but a great story, and very well acted.

GoofTrooper -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/1/2005 11:27:28 PM)

Now thats a great movie.

Lucky i'm an easy going guy who likes chat [;)]

Your theory is that for them to be classed as genuine WW2 aircraft means they have to have been built between 39-45, every part on them has to be the original part, the nuts and bolts have to be the originals? [:D] If so I wonder how many of them have been in any film.....

They can't have the chassis of a WW2 aircraft and have been modded to be classed as genuine WW2 aircraft in a film?

Regards,

Steven

You didn't even mention the best part. Ben Afleck (a fighter pilot on 12/7/41) becomes one of Doolittle's B-25 pilots and bombs Tokyo. I had so much expectations from that movie. It blew more chunks than any other war movie I've seen.

Speedysteve -> RE: OT: Saving Private Ryan (11/2/2005 12:06:14 AM)

I know impressive eh Bradley. BoB Vet. PH and next thing you know a twin engine pilot over Tokyo and China [;)]

I love the scene where he cuts the serial number off the aircraft and tosses it on the ground at the squadron commanders feet, glares at him and says: "Confirmed!" (refering to a kill he had gotten earlier but wasnt a confirmed kill so it didnt count).
