Computer games:

Aces of the Deep
Harpoon I/II (no comments necessary)
WitP (ditto)
Civ II (loved those movie trailers for the WoWs and having Elvis as an advisor)

Board games:

Russian Campaign (you could actually see wear patterns on the way to Moscow)
Squad Leader (COI was good too, but then they added all those rules for pinning, etc. in COD, I kinda lost interest)
Air Assault on Crete

Hmmm, so many.

Computer games:
Task Force 1942
Total War series (though it's downfall is too much 'nothing but warfare')
Age of Rifles
'Aces' series by Dynamix (including Aces of the Deep)
Close Combat Series
The Rise and Rule of Ancient Empires
Age of Sail II

Board Games:
ASL & Squad leader
SPI's war in the Pacific (original monster game), 'Phalanx'
Avalon Hill's: 'Battle of the Bulge', 'D-Day', 'Anzio', 'Midway'

The Longest Day
The old AH Panzer Leader/Battles series....cut me wargame teeth on these 2.
The old SPI Civil War series.....Terrible Swift Sword, Wilsons Creek, Bloody April, etc.
Pac War
War in Russia
The V for Victory/World at War series
Close Combat (to me this is the closest I've seen to Squad Leader on Comp, never saw Combat Missions)

As fas Shooter/arcade types I always liked the Lucas Film WWII flying games (nothing like jumping in the cockpit of a Me 262 or a P-47!

Man, you guys are bringing back lots of memories. I spent a lot of my youth sleeping on the floor with a game set up on my bed.

All the old SPI and Avalon Hill monster games, as well as others (in no particular order):

The Longest Day
Atlantic Wall
Terrible Swift Sword
Korsun Pocket (People's War Games)
War in the Pacific
Wellington's Victory (I love this game!)
Campaign for North Africa
Wacht am Rhein
War in Europe

Then, there's The Gamers:
Black Wednesday
Guderian's Blitzkreig II
DAK
Enemy at the Gates
This Hallowed Ground

Then, there's the old Martial Enterprises games (only 1000 copies of each were made). They were the precurser of the Clash of Arms Napoleonic games in print today. Great tatical Napoleonic games (once you decide on the rules).

I enjoy WitP probably more than any computer game I've played but it leaves a good deal to be desired in terms of the feel of the campaign early on. From these threads it seems that engaging the KB early on is simply not a viable possibility...but engage they did in the war with a much more credible performance than this game has shown to be even possible, forget likely.

But back to the best wargame. Without any doubt in my mind it was Victory Games' The Civil War 1861-1865". IT FELT RIGHT. It PLAYED out to either sides advantage without the intervention of special rules.

I guess I should chime in:

1) WitP - really is the cream of the crop for top level hex games.
2) HPS' Sicily. Best fit for that game system. Not too large, not too small.
3) V for Victory series. I might be a bit nostalgic on that. It was my first.

If were talking "simulation" in the purest sense, I have to give snaps to Steel Beasts. Incredible game even with VGA graphics. 9 out of 10 tankers agree. Got a check pre-printed for SB Pro (due out in January I think).

My favorite computer games (chronologically)

Railroad Tycoon (1990 or thereabouts). I still have a tiny dos partition on my machine so I can boot dos and play this one.
Civilization. Many, many hours.
Europa Universalis II. Again, many hours, beta tester. If you don't like the way loans work, you can blame me.
WitP. That's all I've played for the past several months. Getting almost good enough to try taking on a pbem.

Board games

I definitely lean towards monster games, so ...

SPI's War in Europe. Back in the late 70's, a group of us would spend Saturdays in the cellar of the local hobby store. We even made the local newspaper.

Europa games. They show a lot of promise, though they've been promising for years.

WiF, although rules tend to be a moving target.

About a year ago Europa games was purchased by a friend of mine with the intention of getting the company moving forward again. Currently there are legal problems that must be ironed out. However this person is quite serious about Europa and I believe has every intention, and ability to bring this game system back. I also suspect that he will bring it out on CD for computer gaming.

Best Simulation? Best Wargame? I haven't played every single one. Here are my favorates.

Tough one for me.

Top five would be:

Longbow2
EAW
IL2/FB
Aces of the Pacific
Falcon 4.0 (warts and all)

Best Wargames.

Combat Mission (all three)
UV/WitP/WPO
Steel Panthers (got me into computer wargames)
Bombing the Reich.
Battleground series.

Lots of others but these were the ones I wasted the most time on. Personal favorates are personal favorates.

I have fond memories of Aces of the Pacific. It, along with Jane's Anthology and Aces over Europe are the only flight sims i've been able to put serious time into. Did CFS2 a bit but the model drives me crazy.

I remember when I saw Aces of the Pacific in a software shop. At the time I'd stuck with the Atari ST and hadn't made the jump to PC's yet. I was so blown away by the graphics on the box (and the box itself) that I bought the game anyway. The next week I spent £1700 on a 486DX with 4 meg ram - which at the time was the most powerful pc you could get.

That's the first and only time I ever bought a computer game without even having a computer to run it on, and the first and only time I ever bought a computer just to play one game.

Aces did a remarkable job displaying the flight characteristics of the planes despite the technology limits....(better than CFS2!)

Unfortunately, i still have yet to unlearn the habit of pulling the flight stick hard over like one could with Aces.....i end up lawn darting when i do that with EAW.

EAW is amazing. Thx to a modest resolution it totally immerses you into the period....never seen so many planes flying....attacking a bomber stream in smooth motion is awe inspiring but nearly as awe inspiring as my comet like decent to back to Earth sheathed in flames.

Board Games:

1- SPI's War in the East (The Russo-German Conflict, 1941-1945). The map sheets when put together ended up near 4x5 feet. I attached them to a wall and used colored push pins to mount the counters. Had the look of a real HQs war room map.

2- AH's Empires in Arms. Great game but tough getting enough people to run all the countries for such a long game.

Table Top Game:

1- Flecher Pratt's Naval War Game. Table top is a bit of a misnomer as I ended up using my entire back yard to play this. We used 1/700 scale WW2 ship models to fight out our battles but the game rules cover any period from the Russo-Japan War up to the age of missiles. It did not lend itself well to aircraft so all battles were gun vs gun affairs. Tape measures a must as the players acted as Captain and Gunnery Officer estimating ranges in inches to the target. What fun!

Computer Games:

1- WITP

2- Stars! A space exploration/colonization/war game that allowed up to 8 PBEM players. Micro-management was the key to success which of course lead me to fall in love with WITP!!!

I enjoyed flight sims back in those days. I loved Aces of the Pacific, and was properly enthralled when they finally got Red Baron II to work. I don't know why, but I don't even touch flight sims any more. Maybe it's because the computers required are too expensive for me... or I'm just getting old and slow...

This is a good thread...

Board Game- Gotta go with ASL. Anyone ever play the whole way through the stalingrad map? Huge... We would play for 12-16 hours and only get thru 4-5 days and then my friends wife would make him clean it up....Never finished, but started at least 10 times.

Computer- Not in any order-
WITP/UV
KP
TOAW
BTR
Harpoon
I have to agree that Morrowind is an incredible RPG!

I was a huge Aces of Pacific player... One time when in Seattle way back around 95 a P-47 air force sqn had there 50th anniversary WWII. There was this place right next door that had an awesome set-up for multiplayer PC games. Fiberwire & flatscreens cockpit type seats.. They had thier anniversary here and 60 of them where playing Aces over Europe (not sure on name) and they loved it! All 50-60 pilots running around talking sh.. again just like the old days. Incredible day! I stayed for hours just listening to there stories..

Hi all,

I remember that in early 1980's I almost bought "Sinclair QL" because of one wargame (I believe the first true computer wargame!!!)... I can't remember the name right now but it was WWII western front I think...

In those times (1983/84) when my uncle took Sinclair ZX back to him I bought Commodore 64 and played "Red Storm Rising" to the death (I even modded it - still have documentation of what I did and how I did it!)...

After Commodore 64 I got Atari ST but don't recall any significant wargame on it.

In my PC time (since 1993) I hold with depest respect the three titles from Avalon Hill/Atomic:

Operation Crusader
Stalingrad
D-Day: America Invades

Until TOAW (and UV/WitP) those 3 above were the best wargames I ever had (heck even nowadays some features they had are not available in any modern HEX based game - they were so much ahead of time <SIGH>)...

Sid Meirs "Alpha Centauri". Does that count as a wargame?

Economic, political, and combat all included in the game design.
