-And also air action over China. Allied losses were 50 planes vs. 34 for Japanese. Enemy planes were decimated by Mandalay air defenses again. Losses in A2A were 32 Hurricanes and 3 Blenheims, against 10 Oscars (and no Tojos!). Unfortunately, the enemy air raids destroyed 10 Oscars and 10 Tojos in the ground, thus resulting in a draw (of course, Japanese aircrews losses were smaller). Our forces paid back the allies with two raids on Wuchow, destroying 8 chinese bombers in the ground. For some reason, the enemy had no CAP over Wuchow....the excellent performance of the Ki-44 in A2A (up to now they have a 5:1 kill rate) is prompting many pilots to ask for a faster upgrade for Oscar units. Unfortunately, the Tojo production, currently at 124 units/month isn´t probably enough to allow a faster conversion, and, anyway, there is still some doubt on the superiority of thr newer fighter.

-A bad day for Japan over Burma. Tojos again saved the day against the Hurricanes, but the overall score was only 3x0, however, 7 more planes were destroyed in the ground. Meanwhile a bombardment mission against Gilli gilli resulted in 3 DD damaged against 2 PT, 1 P-40 and 2 Wirraway destroyed in the ground....Yamamoto asked himself if it was a good idea.....

-Japanese fighters achieved an important air victory over Mandalay, by shooting down 36 Hurricanes and 2 Beauforts, losing only 1 Oscar and 3 Zeroes. Unfortunately, the enemy bombers destroyed 25 fighters in the ground. Overall losses for the turn were 42 for Allies and 33 for Japan. JAAF is growing worried with the heavy losses in the Burma front and requested additional help to the Navy. It´s uncertain to what extent additional Zeroes will be commited to the Burma defense, as the Navy is already having some troubles in the New Guinea Front....

-Enemy fighters are so scared that they flee from our Zeroes and Oscars as soon they see them. Unfortunately, losses suffered in the last days depleted our fighters groups in Mandalay, making them less effective. The enemy lost 11 panes to A2A, including 2 B-25´s, but destroyed 27 planes (22 in the ground and 5 in Air combat). Overall losses were 18 to Allied and 28 to Japan. An effort will be made to boost air defenses over Burma, as the enemy fighters are close to exaustion too....
-Some worrying news, enemy submarine activity in SoPac in increasing. One AK lost and one PG heavily damaged in the last turns (4 days). Canton is about to be attacked. Intel located 32 units in the area

The grueling attrition war continues over Burma. Allied forces appear to be getting the upper hand slowly but surely though as bomber squadrons from several UK bases, aided by the heroic actions of the outclassed Hurricane escorts, batter their way through to plaster the airfields around Mandalay. Many Japanese fighters have been reported destroyed on the ground as a result balancing the heavy losses suffered in the air by the crack Sentais of the 5th Division.

Recent skirmishes though indicate that the Japanese army pilots are tiring....Hurricane pilots are beginning to score more and more successes in the air.

Message from the CinC of Japanese forces in Burma.

-After decimating enemy forces, our fighters and the respctive crews were provisionally evacuated from Mandalay. The evacuation order was issued in order to allow rest and refit for fighter Sentais. The upgrade to the better Ki-44 is being considered for at least two Sentais. We also consider that the enemy forces were effectively rendered unable for further offensive, as it is demonstrated by the insignificant damage inflicted by last attacks, and to their inability to offer fighter opposition against a raid on Akyab. We are happy to see that crew losses in the last days over Burma were negligible and we just need to replace the planes (however, we have a small trouble with the evacuation of Mandalay, as we have many "planeless" pilots)

Yamamoto to CinC of Japanese forces in Burma:

@##$$#$@##@@@####$!!!! How do you dare to sacrifice our Betties in low level attacks on Akyab. Do you think that the exchange of 7 Betties and their crews for one Beaufort is a great business to the empire?????

Message from Buna commander to Rabaul commander

-If we lose 4 barges each day, we will be in deep trouble, why don´t you bring the Tokyo express???

-The assault on Canton started yesterday and was easily repulsed, with a 20:1 casualty rate. The battle of Canton also involved an attempt by US mercenaries (the so called Flying Tigers)and Chinese bombers to gain air superiority over the battle fields. Again the enemies were defeated, with the loss of 16 P-40 and 6 Chinese bombers, while the defenders lost 8 Oscars and 5 Ki-44. In another development, the JAAF speaker declared yesterday that the production lines of the Ki-43Ib were closed. According to him, a new version of the Ki-43, faster and less vulnerable, while retaining its agility, will replace the older model. Some of the production lines will also be changed to produce the Ki-44. We expect the Ki-43II and the Ki-44 will be able to defeate any plane the allied can field until mid 44. In an unconfirmed report, however, JAAF pilots weren´t happy with the new plane. A pilot of the 77th Sentai, who tested the plane, was said to have complained the the Ki-43II is only a marginal improvement over the older version and its two 0.5 in guns are clearly not adequate to deal with armored allied planes. "We usually spend all of our anmo on a B-25 and it still can return to base", said him "Nakajima engineers should be forced to fly with us the air defense missions over Burma".

-Good news: Mandalay is defended again. The veterans of 29th Sentai achieved their 99th victory, destroying 8 Hurricanes and 1 B-25 with the loss of only one Tojo
-Bad news: The AVG decimated our bombers over Changsha. Eleven Ki-21 and 2 Oscars lost. No P-40 was shot down. The JAAF is speeding up upgrading of K-21´s to KI-49´s.

-The attempt to reoccupy Mandalay ended in a total disaster, as the 29th was decimated. Twenty two Tojos destroyed (2 in the ground). Only two enemy planes shot down in A2A combat. The Tojo is a good plane but it usually takes damage in combat, and damaged planes are destroyed in the next attack. If Mandalay is to be reoccupied, it will need at least 3 Ftr Sentais to inflicet significant damage in the enemy. The loss of five aircrews from the 29th Sentai was also a heavy blow.

Indeed a good day for the Allies as 20 unservicable Tojo's were reputed destroyed/written off on the ground due to the successful strikes conducted. In the air, the harried Hurricane pilots are starting to achieve near parity in losses against the harrased and tired Tojo pilots. Air supremency is (for the time being) reestablished over Central Burma.

In China.....a message was received from General Stillwell:

"Dear Peanut....;"

What the god *(&*(!@)@# do you THINK YOUR DOING @ CANTON. You DUMB *&^&*(! are you trying to bleed the Chinese Army white? What kind of )(&U*(*&)! Advisors are you LISTENING too these days you <BLEEP>? Don't make me come up there and I(*&*(!@ your god-(&*(&9 )(&$$$$$$$!

Sincerely....

Stillwell.
General commanding stuff somewhere near Ledo.

-An emergency meeting will take place tomorrow in the Emperor´s palace in Tokyo, as a worrying string of bad news seems to be pointing to the sad true. Japan already lost the initiative in Asia and is being forced on defensive, and even worse, withouth much success. Today, a convouy bring reinforcements to New Guinea was heavily hit by enemy LBA. Two Destroyers were lost. Yamamoto was furious with the use of destroyers to escort slow convoys. He noticed that the Navy already lost 7 DD´s in the last 7 months and noticed that current rates will result in serious disruption of the Navy´s operational capabilities. Mandalay was evacuated again, while two more Tojos were destroyed in the ground. The 29th Sentai lost another pilot and the Army is worried about the speed they are losing fighter crews. To make things even worse, Chinese bombers again dared to attack Japanese shipping in Taan.

-Air attacks on Wuchow and Nanning resulted in 4 I-16 destroyed in A2A combat (vs. 3 Oscars, Ki-44 didn´t suffered losses but also failed to destroy even one enemy plane) plus 12 planes destroyed in the ground (some payback for the 29th Sentai). Unfortunately, 2 Ki-49´s and 2 Ki-21´s also were lost in the attacks. Btw, one more Tojo destroyed in the ground in Mandalay, as the 29th attempts evacuation...the unfortunate convoy to Siador was able to run away withouth additional losses.....details of the meeting with the Emperor to be posted latter

-Japanese flying boats flying from Burma failed to detect the approach of a slow BB TF, which was able to sink one DD, 2 AK´s and 2 MSW´s. The light surface forces defending the harbour couldn´t do too much, but the destroyers placed one Long Lance in the Ramillies. In air operations, there were about ten losses for each side. B-17´s shot down two Zeroes over Rabaul (one crew lost) losing one of theirs (four new hosts to our resort)

-Worrying news, more two Zeroes and his crews were lost to unescorted B-17´s over Rabaul. The skill of enemy crews improved a lot and the plane is really hard to be brought down. In Rabaul, the local commander asked for a Tojo Sentai, as a provisional step while the new navy bomber buster, the J2M, is being developed.

Operation Dracula, a UK surface raid on the primary Japanese base of Rangoon can be considered a partial success having accounted for several Japanese warships and merchants at the cost of one torpedo hit on the old battleship Ramillies. However the planned bombardment of the chocked airfields was aborted by the surface force's commander. Still, SEAC HQ was happy with the results. Commonwealth airforces continue to plaster Mandalay, though the daily cost in write offs and operational accidents continues to be heavy.

In the Coral Sea, Allied air dominance continues to grow with the new B-24D Liberators debuting over New Gineau. A spotted Iboat sitting along Allied communication lines was systematically dispatched by an ASW force. Xmas in Rabaul party plans continue to progress.

What is happening? This new format seems not to be accepting cut and paste from combat.txt files. This makes the continuation of the AAR impossible. Any hints?

-Mandalay was reoccupied after the Japanese HQ in Burma noticed a clear decline in the intensity of enemy attacks, resulting in the airfield being fully repaired. The Ki-43 II make its first appearance, along with F1/Tainan Daitai. As a result, the enemy lost 11 planes (10 Hurricanes and 1 B-25) for 1 Zero and one Oscar lost in A2A combat. Over Siador, the situation is going from bad to worse, as the A6M2 of Zuikaku are having troubles in dealing with large unescorted B-17 formations. Four fighters were lost (only two crews) while the enemy lost one B-17 (non combat). Meanwhile, a solitary AK was attacked by Vals near Truk (???????).
-Photos from units in Buna show a strange two tailed, two engined plane, similar to the F-5 recon plane, however, there were a big formation of 30 such planes., suggesting that it was probably a fighter version of the plane (they weren´t carrying bombs)

Operation "left hook" appears so far to have been a success putting the Japanese redoubt at Mandalay in a more perilous situation with Pagen now invested by Commonwealth forces of the British 14th Army. While air resistance over Mandalay has resurfaced with a combination of Zeros and what appears to be an upgraded model of the ever nimble Army type 0, B-25's continue to pound the airfields around the Burmese city though damage has left a steady trail of written off and crashed Mitchells. Heavy flak defenses though are impeeding the complete shutdown of the airfields resulting in a continuing war of attrition both in the air and on the ground. 225 Group continues to urgently request updated fighter assets from Fighter command as the aging Hurricane simply is no match for either Navy or Army type 0 aircraft despite valient efforts by the Hurricane pilots. Spitfires are at the top of the request list. Only the extreme toughness of the Allied bombers and their resistance to even the heavy armament of the "Tojo" airframe, prevents air operations from being too costly.

Routine air operations continue over New Guneau, a newly established Japanese airbase 120 miles NE of Lae being subjected to steady bombardment from heavy bomber groups based in Northern Austrailia. Buna continues to be pounded by Port Morosby's airforce.

Little other activity detected by the Japanese who's continued passiveness warrents automatic caution.
