Well to be fair to our international friends, I think World Cup is a better name for their Football championships than World Series is for our baseball finals.

They apparently built a U-boat for the movie and spent quite a bit of time tooling around off the French coast. There were a lot of flashbacks, from what I heard.

LOL Mike

Platoon, Band of Brothers, Battle of Britain, The Longest Day, Das Boot, Cross of Iron, Blackhawk Down and I actually kinda liked We Were Soldiers.

Good call T. Although I do find it biased some of the combat scenes in Blackhawk Down are top notch.

Band of Brothers is a great series. Happy I own that on DVd too.

Is the 'Marines edition' still in the pipeline?

Speedy. Did you Say you were going to San Francisco? If you are, save time for sightseeing if you can. They've got a sub, a victory ship, a tall ship. Ghirardelli chocolate, great seafood restaurants, giant sequoias, ghirardelli chocolate.

Oh Yeah. It's really fresh when you buy it in their store next to Fishermen's wharf. We spent part of our vacation in San Francisco last summer. It was a lot of fun.

Hi Bruce. Yes. When I start my new job (17th July) I wll be going to SF (date unsure) to meet CEO and for training. I will hopefully have a weekend for sightseeing.

I can assure you when I have a date for this I will be asking around here for suggestions to fill the time (unless the GF is with me.)

Plenty of stuff to do with GF. Go to the Marin Headlands. The views are fantastic. Plus there are a couple of WWII army post up there you get to look at while enjoying the scenic views etc.

Hmmm, maybe we should come up with a recognition signal, like a secret handshake, for RW encounters.

LOL Bruce. How great a combination would that be - the misses could do her "oooh look at the view" bit whilst i'm looking at the WW2 posts. Perfect

Of course it pre-supposes me and the misses go there.

Good idea - make a whirling motion, as if you are spinning thread. In order for it to be visible - do it by your temple...

Heres a closeup of the sub. You get to go inside from aft torpedo room to forward torpedo room. Nice exhibit. Nice people manning exhibit

Ghirardelli Square is just a couple of blocks away

MORE TALES FROM THE MONEYPIT:

My wife, being obsessed with the large watermocassin that she has gotten glimpses of (it is very shy and submerges on seeing the slightest movement) keeps going down to the creek to see if she can pics of it...

This time she got a bit more than she bargained for!

She snuck down carefully, making no noise, leaned over the bank carfully... only to be confronted by (as she put it) "a GIGUNDO bobcat" (robertcat??)

It was more startled than she was (which is saying something) and ran it off at top speed... she did think to snap a photo just as it was disappearing from view. She is trying to send it to me now...

We used to see Bobcats in our backyard before they bulldozed the 100 acres of woods behind my house. That's progress.

Haven't heard of any since we got here (aside from insect bites, which almost killed my little dog when we first got here...)

Unfortunately. We also have the mega store that shall not be named less thaan a mile away. When they built houses on the 100 acres, they did leave about 3 acres of woods right behind us. It was too low to build on. We can here the stuff behind us but we can't see it. And in the summer no one wants to walk back there because it usually has 6 to 10 inches of water in it. This gives us quite a bit of privacy. We really do like it. I do have to watch out for the things Robert's wife is seeing however. My biggest concern is coral snakes.

What kind of dog?

Miniature Schnauzer. This was about 1 week after we moved in. The "mower in working order" (small tractor, actually) that we got with the house didn't - and the grass grew up real tall.

My wife was walking the little dog and noticed she was getting bitten by ants (turned out to be fire ants).

She pulled off the ants. Shortly afterwards, the little girl dog was acting puny and crawled in wife's lap, then stopped breathing, and lost control of various excretory functions.

Anyway, i was there and did CPR on her and she started breathing again. She was doing a peculiar type of breathing that can portend a bad outcome so we rushed to the vet - only to find it had closed about 25 minutes earlier. We then rushed to an Animal ER and about the time we arrived she woke up (but was really groggy).

We've since sprayed for fire ants on a regular basis.
