No idea... I use DOSBox, a DOS emulator for Windows; it's for games, y'know?

No. I Didn't. I do now and I appreciate it. That would definitely work. Is it available over here? Thanks for your time.

Make sure you get what's called a "front-end" for it. This is a Windows program that allows you to activate the thing without having to type 11 million obscure commands. There's links to find various front-ends on the site; I use DFend...

Someone with much more Windows knowledge than I needs to weigh in on this, but if you are running Windows 2000 or later DOS no longer actaully exists as part of the OS. They have a routine that emulates the old command line prompt. For the vast majority of DOS apps you can use an emulator as T suggested. I don't know the exact proceedure for partitioning disks with the newer versions of windows. They have some pretty good programs these days for disk repair and management. I bet a lot of them have partitioning utilities and you could probably get a freeware program to do just that.

Rather than play with partitions (I can and have on several hard drives done partitioning but not with separate OSs.) I think I would rather use the emulator as you 3 suggest. It seems a safer bet. I really do appreciate the feedback.

Good idea Bruce. I played around with disk partitioning a lot in the mid 90's and lived to regret it....barely.

I'm not a real big fan of seperate OS's on the same machine either, but occasionally one can't get around it.

Emulators seem to be a lot better than they used to be. I had an Amiga emulator for an old PC, but it was much too slow.

Yeah, the AI will try to sneak single ship invasion TFs in on you - watch for them on the "west" coast of Java as well...

<RANT_MODE_ON>

What's wrong with this world? For the past decade or so, we've been hand-polishing our egotism, idolizing mediocricy and worshipping at the altar of the lowest common denominator, and it's getting worse.

Everywhere: television, radio, the 'Net, "fashion", cell phone ring tones, sexual habits, eating habits, driving habits, politics, drug usage, energy usage, total lack of judgment and this overwhelming sense that anyone you pass in the street could explode all over you, figuratively and literally. How the hell did we let it get this far?

Every single day we're being dragged down by the global tar pit of stress, mediocrity and stupidity. And I'm not saying that because I think I'm supersmart; my IQ was measured at 106, and that's completely average. People everywhere are running faster and faster because "society" has seen fit to dictate to us that 24 hours is not enough in one day. So we drive too fast, run too fast, eat too fast, talk too fast and don't LISTEN. We never stand still, because if we do, we're left behind.

And in the six minutes every day that people sit back and "relax", what's the malodorous tripe that passes for entertainment these days? Oh My Thread, what the hell are "reality" shows supposed to be? This little guilty pleasure that we watch "for fun", "once in a while", convincing ourselves that we would never dream of appearing on one of those programs. Yeah, Right! Every microsecond spent watching that kind of garbage takes 600 brain cells off the top...

And all the rest of it? It really feels like there's nobody in the media and the entertainment world these days that are worthy of our respect. The few that are left in my book are all either middle age or dead. Where's the next generation? Where are the heroes? Where are the role models?

And people don't care! A recent US survey said that people thought voting in American Idol was more important than voting in a presidential election! What the F*ck? And people think, "well, that's America!" NO! That's not just America! College students in the US had trouble finding New York on a map? "Oooh, Americans are just stupid..." NO! Not just Americans!

The young people everywhere in the Western world don't know basic things and they DON'T CARE! Where's that going to leave us when it comes time for the young people of today to rule the world of tomorrow? We'll look back on the days of Dubya as the Good Old Days...

We're too busy to care about the world around us, so parents are neglecting their kids, leaving childrearing to X-Boxes and blaming video games and the schools when their kids take drugs or kill other kids. The London suicide bombers were born in the UK, and people just went "how the h*ll did that happen?" for two weeks before forgetting it again...

And people are getting so angry. The only reason that more people aren't been gunned down in the streets of this country is because firearms are comparatively hard to come by in Denmark. But hey, who's up for a rousing round of "jump up and down on this passerby's head for no reason whatsoever?"

Man... I just read through this whole post... What a load...

T, if it makes you feel better I agree with you. When I was a kid say 8 to 10 (1964 to 1966) we had to go out to play. We played army (not PC I know) we played flashlight tag and one called ghost in the graveyard after dark. We road bikes. We only had 4 channels on the TV. The phone in the house did not ring all the time. These things do not happen. My kids were two of the few who did not have TVs in their rooms. I could not wait to vote when I was 18. I still remember that. I worry too sometimes. You want to rant, we are to listen. No problem.

<RANT_MODE_OFF>

i agree, but came to the same conclusions a while ago, but gave up on any idea of trying to convince people. i am glad idealism is not dead, however.

My turn:

In matera*(?) veritas:
(having consumed some beer this PM)

A really bad week. Since i don't compartmentalize well, consider rant mode semi-on:

After a three week lay-off of the game due to mainly external events, i finally got to another turn from my PBEM game. My esteemed (and i am NOT being sarcastic - i think Pompack is a gentleman of the first water) sent me back the results, and for the first two minutes of reading and rereading the AAR, i thought it must be a mistake, that he must sent back the wrong turn. After studying it some more, i could see vague outlines of the game - but it seems none of the orders i submitted got carried out, and orders i didn't submit DID get carried out... which leads me to this ditty (again, i will leave it to the reader's imagination to figure out what tune this parodies, although it shouldn't be as bad as last time...):

ODE TO WITP

You and I on the Internet
Buy a game with the money we've got.
Play it until the break of dawn
'Til all our energy was gone.
Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash messages of thing's not out there.
Floating in the Pacific sky.
99 horrible bugs go by.

99 horrible bugs.
floating in the Pacific sky.
Panic bells, it's red alert.
There's something here that’s screwing up.
The war machine grinds to a halt.
Opens up one bloodshot eye.
Focusing it on gamer guys.
And 99 horrible bugs go by.

99 Decision Street.
99 Grognards meet.
To worry, worry, super-scurry.
Call the programers out in a hurry.
This is what we've waited for.
This is it boys, this is THE war.
The debug program is on the line
As 99 horrible bugs go by.

99 Knights of the air
Ride super-high-tech Zero fighters
Everyone's a superhero.
Everyone's Saburo Sakai.
With orders to identify.
To clarify and classify.
Scramble in the Pacific sky.
As 99 horrible bugs go by.

99 dreams I have had.
In every one had a bug.
It's all over and I'm standing pretty.
In this game that turned real sh!tty.
If I could find a souvenier.
Just to prove the war was really here.
And here is another bug
I think of you and let it go...

Heh... When I was 7 years old (1980), we had to go out to play. We played army, we rode bikes, we had ONE TV channel (if the weather was good, we got one channel of Swedish TV from across the Øresund), and the phone certainly didn't ring all the time. And I've voted every single time as long as I've been able, for everything they've let me vote for.

And I'm not saying those were necessarily the good old days. I remember watching a news conference in 1981, where some talking head said, "the risk of nuclear war in 1982 is 50-50". I was 8, and I knew what that meant. My parents split up around that time, as well, so no, times weren't hilarious. I'm not saying we need to turn back the clock - I'm no Luddite. It's just that sometimes I look at the world and despair...

My parents were married 53 years when my dad died. Pretty lucky there. When I was 5 or 6 Cuban missle crisis, I still remember the civil defense drills. I vote every chance I get (only missed couple of times due to business travel). However T, so does my 21 year old son. I worry but I seem some bright spots.
