Hi all,

Good good. Faber did not return to Chungking today. Provided he doesn't return tomorrow i'll have even more Spits on patrol.

Supplies increased by 200 in Kunming and 100 in Chungking

----------------

SS Scamp patrolling south of Okinawa heavily damaged AK Junpo Maru with a torpedo.

SS Trusty was guarding the approaches to Bankha and Medan and found the lone TK Akebono Maru. She surfaced and hit the thing with at least 2 torpedo's and several gun hits. The Tanker clearly got a radio message off though since 30 minutes later a Sally flew overhead and dropped a bomb nearby the front torpedo tubes causing minor flooding and making the tubes inoperable. Trusty is tor return to Columbo for repairs. Hopefully the enemy tanker will sink.

------------------

I'm receiving this bad boy tomorrow

Hi all,

China - Supplies rose by 400 in Chungking and by 200 in Kunming

He still bombed the snot out of the airfield at Kunming though. As such I have moved in my Ledo based P38 FG. Should be a nice surprise for him if he attacks tomorrow

My ultimate aim is to have 4 x Spit squadrons at both Kunming and Chungking. I have 4 at Chungking already, 2 in Chengtu and 2 more forming up in Ledo. Within a week Kunming should have it's Spit allocation too. This should stop him having a 'free ride' in China!

I still have Spit's in Burma for base cover along with P40's so no major problems there.

-----------

SS War -

1. SS Nautilus patrolling west of Tori Shima hit AK Bengal Maru with a torpedo on the port bow. The impact left the ship on fire but astill moving at a fair speed.

SS Guardfish and SS Grouper both patrolling north of Okinawa were both reported to have been bit by a DC and bomb (respectively). Luckily these reports were false

----------

Tomorow all fleet units leave Attu to head back to the USA for R & R. I am unsure whether to wait for 4/43 upgrades or to order the Wake invasion mid-Marchish. Thoughts?

The Independence class carry only 30 aircraft? I thought they carried 45. They're not as good as I thought they would be.

I'll sink em anyway. I'm impartial.

Hi all,

LOL Mike. Yeah but I still get 9 of the boys to play with = 270 aircraft

Faber was royally surprised today. He attacked Kunming and got spanked. The 23rd FG flying CAP are vetrerans of the Burma theatre and tore into his Tony's and bombers:

Day Air attack on Kunming , at 39,33

Japanese aircraft
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 39
Ki-21 Sally x 43
Ki-49 Helen x 28

Allied aircraft
P-38G Lightning x 53

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 24 destroyed
Ki-21 Sally: 7 destroyed, 5 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 5 destroyed, 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-38G Lightning: 3 destroyed, 8 damaged

Allied ground losses:
10 casualties reported

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 8

Aircraft Attacking:
14 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 10000 feet

--------------

I got spanked in return over PM:

Day Air attack on Port Moresby , at 53,91

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 15
A6M3 Zero x 15
A6M3a Zero x 12
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 23

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 111
B-24D Liberator x 42

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed, 3 damaged
A6M3 Zero: 1 destroyed, 7 damaged
A6M3a Zero: 3 destroyed, 4 damaged
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 3 destroyed, 17 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 6 destroyed, 39 damaged
B-24D Liberator: 3 destroyed, 5 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
32 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Airbase hits 2
Runway hits 4

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 10000 feet
4 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 10000 feet

16 Forts failed to return.......

-----------

Subs did well again:

1. SS Scamp hit PG Heijo Maru with a fish south of Okinawa.

2. SS Pompon sank TK Tarakan Maru with 2 x Mk XIV's

AK Junpo Maru hit yesertday was confirmed sunk..........

--------------

So then guys thoughts -

Is it worth waiting for the 4/43 upgrades before invading Wake? When do proximity fuses come into action?

-------------

Surprise!:

Hi all,

Today was the day of SS Spearfish. Patriolling 180 miles ENE of Brunei she attacked and heavily damaged the AK Hokkai Maru with 2 torpedo's.

4 hours later she found a lone freighter, surfaced and hit AK Erie Maru with 4 shells and a torpedo also leaving her heavily damaged.

Well done lads

--------------

The usual bombing by me in China at his troops NE of Chungking and on Myitkyina's airfields and support troops. I feel he may be weakening here. Over the past 2 weeks his troops levels and guns have been falling. Not by a lot but before they were not falling at all! Maybe lack of supply.

--------------

Faber launched a desparate land attack at Chungking. My men easily repulsed the enemy inflicting 23,000 casualties to my 1600

--------------

All is quiet at Attu. All ships are en route to various West Coast ports for R & R.

Libs, Marauders and Havocs flew in to replace P38's, SBD's and F4F's for Kiska combat duty.

Hi all,

SS Balao got into action today! The improved Gato class sub patrolling near Etoforo Jima, Lower Kuriles stumbled upon a small TK class ship. She surfaced and placed a well aimed 5" round into the bridge before despatching the target beneath the waves with 2 Torpedo's...........confirmed as TK Kyoie Maru sunk...........

--------------

My heavies from Cooktown got bloodied over NG again! I'm tempted to move them to Darwin in due course and go for oil bombing on Amboina/Sorong...........

Day Air attack on Port Moresby , at 53,91

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 20
A6M3 Zero x 13
A6M3a Zero x 12
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 13

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 64
B-24D Liberator x 30

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 4 destroyed, 4 damaged
A6M3 Zero: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged
A6M3a Zero: 1 destroyed
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 6 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 4 destroyed, 22 damaged
B-24D Liberator: 6 destroyed, 17 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
62 casualties reported

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 1

Thanks for your help Rob

I have decided with no other input I will move ships back to US and IF they are repaired and rested enough before 4/43 i'll go for Wake. If not then i'll wait.......

Hi all,

Air attacks by me at:

Myitkyina (airfield + troops)
Kiska (airfield + troops)
PM (airfield)

Heavy bomber losses over PM by enemy Zero and Tony fighters have forced me to cancel any further 4E bomber missions over Southern New Guinea. As mentioned before when I reeive the necessary support personnel (within a month) i'll move these to groups to Darwin to bomb Japanese Oil installations at Sorong and Amboina.

-------------

Sub War -

SS Grunion had success today in hitting and heavily damaging AK Hokuzyu Maru with a torpedo east of Palembang.

SS Spearfish missed an AK east of Brunei (returning to Darwin for reload. Dutch sub from Columbo en route to replace her).

SS Balao missed a TK in the Lower Kuriles

Good news though. Both the AK's Spearfish hit 2 days ago (Hokkai Maru and Erie Maru) were confirmed sunk today.

Hi all,

Todays highlights were once mroe undersaa efforts. Faber commented by mail that every day it's Allied air strikes in Burma, over Kiska and my subs sinking 2-3 ships whilst all he does is lose 23,000 men at Chungking. Such is war I guess

-----------

SS Balao hit AK Holland Maru with a torpedo moderately damaging her.

SS Seal patrolling 120 miles north Of Jolo attacked TK Kyokuei twice during the day but only hit her with 1 torpedo leaving her heavily listing.

SS Gurnard had fun with a lone AK 240 miles south of Shikoku. This speaks for itself:

Sub attack at 61,46

Japanese Ships
AK Atlas Maru, Shell hits 8, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Gurnard

--------------

Here's the most precious ships lost by both of us so far:

Hi all,

Several day update due to it being relatively quiet.

Most days have seen 1-3 sub attacks in the SRA by me but the past 2 have seen no hits or sinkings

All of my warships that departed Attu should be in the various West Coast ports within 5 more days.

China is getting interesting and Burma will do so again soon:

China - No attacks from Faber on either Chungking or Kunming for 5 days now. Supplies have risen to 10,200 and 11,300 repsectively. Spits still patrolling overhead (and will remain so).

The interesting part is his drive on Yunan from Hanoi. 3 units are moving there and 1 has just reached 60 miles away. The forces i'm moving there (3 units from Chungking, 2 120 miles NW of Yunan and 1 from Kunming) have moved far slower than expcted!

Burma - My drive from Kohima to Mandalay is gathering. Tomorrow the Indian Tank Brigade should reach 60 miles from the rail. Then all 7 units will move at once into Faber's 5 rail hex guarding units.

-------------

Some interesting air reinforcements ahead.....notably Corsairs, Ventura's (excellent bombload) and Karachi bound B-24's

I know. The irony

Another 2 days pass with more of the same.

SS Pompom hit an empty TK with 2 fish yesterday.

Today:

SS Grouper hit a skulking PG Shinko Maru with a torpedo leaving her heavily damaged.

SS Grunion hit AK Hokuroku Maru with a torpedo near Palembang also leaving her heavily damaged.

The usual air action in China and in Burma.

The race for Yunan is on!

Hi all,

Well well....Faber hit Attu overnight with 2 BB groups. I had not spotted them coming but my 12 x PT's on patrol spotted them coming and raced to intercept the goliath's......

At first the little gnats were swatted away and 4 sank in quick succession........there was then a huge explosion in the vicinity....DD Maikaze had struck a mine planted by my ML's (1000 around Attu).........the PT's attracted by the fire swarmed around Maikaze pumping her full of 50 cal rounds before another PT was blown up by an IJN DD.....they then withdrew.

The Japanese ships bombarded the airfields but the fire was woefully innacurate. 1 x P38 and 1 x P40 were destroyed on the ground.

The positive news is that the stricken Maikaze was only 180 miles west of Attu when prowling Catalina's found her. After radioing back 4 Beauforts were despatched to find the Destroyer which they did. 1 Torpedo hit amidships leaving the destroyer dead in the water.....no confirmed sinking as yet.

-----------------

All of my fleet ships are back in various West Coast ports now receiving R & R

-----------------

My subs had a bit more fun today.

1. SS Pompon missed an AK with a full spread.

2. SS Nautilus hit AK Columbia maru with a torpedo amidships cauing a huge explosion and leaving the ship low in the water...........

3. SS Sargo patrolling deep in the South China sea inbetween Camranh Bay and Jesselton found a snmall TK convoy and hit the laden San Clemente Maru with a torpedo leading to a series of huge explosions aboard the ship.

Good news. The empty TK that Pompon hit and AK Hokuroku Maru that Grunion hit were confirmed sunk today.

------------------

Yunan -

Seems to be the next focal point in China with the stalemates at Kunming and Chungking.

A Chinese Corps has just marched into the City behind level 7 forts. I'll probably need more than that to beat Faber's 3 advancing units. My other reinforcements are still miles away unfortunately.

The IJA air units have also focussed attention on Yunan recently.

Hi all,

The 24th was relatively quiet. Faber did not return to Attu. The only fun bit was when SS S-28 surfaced to engage a small class Tanker 240 miles east of Hokkaido. Within 10 minutes the Tanker was ablaze and sinking after being hit by 2 x 4" shells and 2 x Mk10 torpedo's.

---------------

The 25th was livelier though

Lots of sub action today:

1. SS Pickerel missed AK Ryoka Maru near Maccasar with 2 fish.

2. SS Gunnel missed AK Koho Maru with 6 torpedo's east of Luzon in the morning but after tracking the small convoy lined herself up and hit her later on with 2 Mk XIV's torpedo's. The ship was left listing and low by the bow.

3. SS Flying Fish patrolling inbetween Wewak and Guam hit the lone AK Hachijin Maru with 2 torpedo's in 2 attacks. After the first hit the damned ship just would not sink. Another spread was launched. 1 of which it and sealed the AK's fate......

4. SS Grouper hit a Patrol Craft (PG Kiso Maru) with 2 torpedo's which vaporised the small vessel.

5. SS S-28 was attacked today by a patrolling Sally. Clearly yesterday's tanker victim had radioed in. The Sally dropped it's load and a near miss caused substantial hull and flotation damage. She departs the scene for home waters. She should make it.

---------------

Since I hadn't launched any heavy raids over southern NG for a while thought i'd try a strike at Buna. Didn't catch him off guard though:

Day Air attack on Buna , at 55,90

Japanese aircraft
A6M2-N Rufe x 9
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 11

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 131
B-24D Liberator x 56

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2-N Rufe: 1 destroyed, 7 damaged
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 1 destroyed, 9 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 4 destroyed, 18 damaged
B-24D Liberator: 15 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
38 casualties reported

Airbase hits 29
Airbase supply hits 8
Runway hits 89

11 x heavies were lost during the day.

Hi all,

Terrible weather across the entire Pacific led to no offensive air missions being launched by either the Allies or Japanese today.

4 x AK's were confirmed sunk today by SigInt though - India Maru, Columbia Maru, Hachijin Maru and Koho Maru

Interestingly SS Balao patrolling up near the Lower Kuriles attacked the fleet Destroyer Oshio. Several other enemy destroyers and the CL Sendai were also identified. Could this have been one of Attu's bombardment groups heading back to Japan?

----------------

Here's a look at Burma - The highlighted units are mine moving towards the rail from Kohima. 7 enemy units await us. If we can breakthrough here then I can cut off his 18 units at Myitkyina and hopefully push onto Mandalay.

18 units in myth eh ? looks like it could be a nice haul if you can keep them cut off.

One possibly gamey solution would be to move 1 unit to the hex west of mythilinka so he cant move from one ZOC to another. hence he's permanantly trapped.

Then u can drice onto mandalay with relative impunity .

Good luck steven !

Hi Rob,

We'll see how much he has on the rail line

Thanks.

--------------------
TF 98 encounters mine field at Saipan (63,64)

Japanese Ships
PC Kunashiri
PC Shimushu
AK Ryuun Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire

--------------

SS Whale put a fish into AK Kazuura Maru............Faber is fuming. He says it had escorts and an ASW TF there but could not get my sub

--------------

Been pondering more on when to invade Wake -

I have decided the following for now:

I will wait for CV Enterprise to repair. She left the Attu region at 50 SYS and is now down to 28 SYS. Consequently I would imagine most of my ships will also have upgraded to the 4/43 version which is good.

Looking at what significant reinforcements I get over the next 60 days:

CVL - Belleau Wood, Princeton
BB - Massachusetts
CL - Santa Fe, Denver
DD x 4
SS x 10.

Consequently with the above I would put the CVE's that are currently in the Essex TF with my transports and move Enterprise + CVL's into their place

Hi all,

March is upon us. The only notable plane addition this month is the P47C

The relative peace continues.

SS Seawolf failed in her duty today missing a loaded freighter TWICE 120 miles east of Batavia

SS Skipjack performed better though in blowing up MSW Toroshima Maru near Brunei.

Burma - Myitkyina witnessed its heaviest days bombing yet. A combined total of 242 Allied planes bombed the airfield or known enemy troop concentrations from Dimapur, Ledo and Imphal. Worse is to come.....another 48 X B24 are due in Karachi in 9 days time.

Here's the main active sub area. Almost every one of these babies has sunk between 1 and 5 enemy ships each

Hi all,

Faber is changing his ASW tactics I believe. Subs have been reported more Lilly and Sally contacts and several PG/PC TF's have been patrolling the 'channels'.

Yesterday for example SS Grenadier patrolling south of Shikoku was heavily damaged by a low flying Sally. She is returning to PH.

Fewer successes also. Only SS Steelhead had joy in damaging an AK near Pagan. Ss Albacore missed a TK south of Okinawa.

-----------------

Burma - more of the same. My Mandalay assault troops have marched 27 miels towards the rail.

I'm moving an Aviation Regiment from Karachi to Ledo to air lift it to Yunan. That will mean every major Chinese base has AV support. I'll then move my P38 FG from Ledo to provide cover at Yunan.

I've mustered up an AP force in San Francisco and am moving it to Attu. I've had enough of Faber either supplying Kiska by subs or removing men by them. The place is shut down and i'm going to take it.

Hi all,

Just to let you all know I won't be updating this AAR from now on.

I'm unhappy in the WiTP forum in general at the moment and recent events have led to a substantial decrease in desire to post here and as such update this AAR.

The game's will continue so no worries there.

Maybe in time i'll feel like updating and posting more.

Many thanks to all those who have read and contributed. It's appreciated.

All the best,

Steven
