hi all no, I am not going to present a formula for airstrike pricing. Not yet But I would like your opinion to couple of thoughts. Airstrikes consist of strafing and bombing. Bombing is in fact delivery of HE explosive to "designed" spot on the map. It's similar to artilery, mainly off-map one. It may be a bit more flexible, accurate and without need of spotters, but it's similar. Unlike artilery, any airplane is capable of just one bombing run in the scenario. It drops all. So, when you are buying dedicated bomber, you are buying /apart from the graphic candy/ one salvo of big shells. Really big ones ... compare HE kill of 120kg bomb with shells and you end up in the naval gun range. So this part of airplane pricing should be in some corelation to artilery salvo (not whole battery) Then you got strafings ....You may get more then one apperance of strafing plane over the battlefield. In ideal condition of max morale of pilots and no AA flak, they are strafing until out of ammo. So I believe ammo supply should be decisive part of strafing plane price. Same plane ...fighter with 4 0.5cal guns with 10 ammo should cost close, but not quite to double of the plane with 4x0.5cal and 5 ammo. Ideally first plane would give you two attacks, second only one. So I believe a) bomb power (total HE kill of all bombs aboard) and b) strafing power: number off ammo x "value of respective gun" (problem with more than 1 type aboard) should make the cornerstones of airstrike pricing. toughness of plane should be important modifier, maybe accuracy, if anybody is able to find out how it works. Remeber, you are not buying PLANE, just one AIRSTRIKE (or in some cases more). Planes cannot be rearmed during scenario. I think it's a pitty. It would be really nice, if a bomber from turn one could rearm and appear over battlefield in lets say turn 20. Fighters or close support planes earlier, heavy bombers never. just a thought Renwor

I know what you mean! I never buy airstrikes. Way to much buck for so little bang. I would much rather spend the points on an arty btry instead. More HE and it stays around.

Good point on the staying power of the arty, but I seem to be giving (and taking) more casulties from airstrikes. In fact, it's the only time I have seen entire units destroyed completely. While not terribly effective (they still get kills) on AFV, what does happen is that the crew will bail out of the AFV (due to shock or suppression) then be wiped out when the next bomb falls. This is version 2.3 by the way. Now I wouldn't trade in all the arty for airstrikes, but if you know of (or have) large concentrations of troops on the map, it will definately give you an edge (or hurt if on the recieving end). I have seen a third of the front line go from the offensive to a rout, with only 2 passes by aircraft (open terrain, rolling hills).

Will from playing Email game I till you this I would never buy airstrikes unless I was forced to they just dont pay for themselfs at all. When you play vs a human you got to take into what I call the retern factor. If you buy a weapon will it do as much damage as it cost to buy it. With airstrike that cost 100 you might get back 40 to 50 points and risk lossing 100 or you may buy a 200 point airstike and do 90 to 100 points of damage and risk 200 points. This is if your really lucky. So from this I would not conseder the return worth the risk of the points. I would put my points to something that will have a good chance of returning what I might loss.

Yet there are some Stike Elements which return more bang than the bucks they cost. (Can´t verify this for PBEM games, though.) I´m talking about the tank killers like the Ju-88 (I´m wondering what the take off is like with a 75mm gun). Against the Red Army I bought two of them (about 150 points). There was few AA resistance, so the gentlemen decided to stay over the battlefield until they were out of ammo (10 shots each). With an experience approx. of 75 they scored a hit about every fourth shot, effectivly taking out 5 tanks (including 2-3 T-43 which we all know are more worth then their 72 points.) The P-39 of my CPU opponent were not this effective, but among a few minor achievments they destroyed one of my precious tigers, who already had a hard bite on these hords of T 43.
