IMO, it comes to this - is playing 7-8 historic period scenarios in most detailed commercially available naval tac engine, worth 65$ for you? Yes it's a lot of money for *very* limited content, but everyone has to answer the above question for himself.

IMO, it comes to this - am I willing to jump thru JR's hoops in order to play Distant Guns? Answer NOOOOOOOO Don't think anyone was as enthusiastic about Norm's product as I was - until JR(who I have no previous gaming knowledge of) got involved. Even if I had high speed access, I wouldn't jump thru those hoops. Starforce is more user friendly.

Actually, I've no problem with the activation/licensing scheme... I just don't think the game's very good...

I can't separate the former from the latter. I don't believe that a developer can be financially successful if they're unwilling to pay even the most cursory of attention to QA. And if the underlying code was that good, DG wouldn't be on version #50, now would it?

This "version #50" has been used maliciously by Koger haters and enemies with no reason whatsoever.

It is merely v1.050. Patch version. No big deal. Some other games use v.1.1 for the first patch, and get to 1.75 or something by the time patching is over. Matrix Games WITP is currently at 1.804 and it's *still* being developed and patched further. That for me is a sign of dedication to the game.

Koger used his (much criticised) server based method of game distribution to make patches available to users immediatelly after they were released. Traditional publisher using traditional methods of distribution would perhaps release every 5th patch, making it seem the game "needed only 2 patches".

Oleg is right on. The tactcal game was playable from Day One. The campaign game, which was to be a later retail add-on, was released free several months earlier than planned and needed several patches. Having said that, even the campaign worked by 1.10. Many of the other patches addressed minor single issues or fixed bugs caused by ealier patches.

These patches were not weeks in the making either. I've seen 3 patches come out in two days. The auto-patcher makes patching painless; no going to a site, downloading, unzipping, etc.

Not to contradict anyone but this game was a wreck from the time that it was released.

SES is the least customer-friendly developer and publisher that I have ever encountered. There is no tech support in the normal sense of the term. They have indeed used us as playtesters. As stated here and elsewhere the dozens of patches for the game always break something else.

I dont consider myself a troublemaker or flamer. I am however a genuinely unhappy cusomer. As of right now I have no intention of ever purchasing a game from them again.
