The U.S. carrier force sorted on 7/1 to try taking advantage of a prolonged run of Heavy Precipitation weather conditions in this area (since the 7/2 game turn) and approach the Marshall Is chain undetected for a possible sneak attack against Jap bases. Operation Report entries follow.

H8K Emily sighting report: 2 Allied ships at 90,82 , Speed 10 , Moving West
H8K Emily sighting report: 4 Allied ships at 90,82 , Speed 13 , Moving West
H8K Emily has spotted Saratoga at 90,82
OS2U-3 Kingfisher sighting report: 2 Japanese ships at 85,81 , Speed 4 , Moving Northwest

A Kingfisher spotter plane detected an unidentified Jap TF (see situation map) moving on a NW heading.

An unidentified Jap sub was also detected earlier on 7/3 near the U.S. CV's route of advance (shown near east edge of situation map below). It could not be determined at that time whether the Jap sub had spotted the U.S. carriers (possible I-class sub with a floatplane?). The decision was made on 7/3 to detach one ASW TF in position to track this sub but not attack immediately in the event the sub had not detected the U.S. carrier TF's.

The U.S. carrier force consists of eight Air Combat TF's (7 U.S, one British) along with two attached ASW TF's. The attached ASW TF's were included in the "stack" to split off and attack Jap picket subs in the sea area between Johnston Is and the Marshalls that may be encountered along the route of advance.

Weather conditions for this sea area had been Heavy Precipitation for the 7/3 through 7/5 game turns. Precipitation is forecast in this area for 7/6.

Carrier TF's were issued orders for the 7/6 game turn to turn NW at full speed to close range and attack the unidentified Jap TF (or TF's). If the Jap TF or TF's turns out to be the KB, this movement will place U.S. carriers in best striking position whether the Jap TF(s) turn to a NE heading or move due E. A move by the KB to the SE will likely place it beyond air strike range of U.S. carrier TF's. The present tactical situation has eliminated any possibility of a successful strike on Kwajalein or other Jap bases in the Marshalls. However, if all or part of the KB is out there, ordered movements should place the U.S. carrier force in a relatively good attack position. As a "worst case" scenario... If the spotted Jap TF is not the KB, it's gonna get the crap pounded out of it.

Both attached ASW TF's were issued orders for 7/6 to break off from the main body and attack the closest known Jap subs.

Situation map follows.

U.S. submarines report light Jap air patrols activity near Kwajalein and at Pago Pago. Reported quiet in the Canton Is area and off Japanese home islands. No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships in any of the above locations.

Sigint report entry for 7/5 indicates Jap 11 Tank Regiment now located on Iwo Jima. Previous location of 11 Tank Rgt was Mishan (Kwantung Army) as of 2/28/43. Following this reported movement of 11 Tank Regiment, there are no known Japanese tank LCU's remaining attached to the Kwantung Army.

Summary of Operations 7/7/43

Central Pacific: U.S. carrier forces continue retiring towards Johnston Is while covering movement of CA Houston. Current movement orders are set for all carrier TF's to recombine at a location W of Johnston Is. VF squadrons have been stood down on as many carriers as possible to return as many damaged F4F's as quickly as possible back to operational status. Four days of CAP operations for VF squadrons at 70% CAP level drained the ready status of VF squadrons on many CV's - this is an issue that will need to be looked at for planning and execution of future carrier ops.

Attached ASW TF's and the replenishment TF continue return movement to Johnston Is. Current status of CA Houston is system damage 57, float damage 47, fire 6 - still moving at 13 kts. Houston is likely to make Johnston Is in its present condition barring another Japanese attack on it.

U.S. subs reporting light Jap air patrols near Kwajalein (mainly G4M Betty & G5N Liz). A number of Jap surface TF's have appeared leaving Kwajalein and moving generally on a ENE heading. Several U.S. submarines in the path of the Jap TF's have attacked and sank several Jap ships. AAR's of these actions and an unrelated U.S. sub action near Majuro are below.

Summary of Operations 7/8/43

North Pacific: PBY Catalina recon over Paramushiro Jima reports Ki-43-II fighters on CAP, one Jap TF (+1 from last report), 3 Jap LCU's (+1 from last report).

Central Pacific: U.S. carrier force main body is now regrouping W of Johnston Is. CA Houston continues moving towards Johnston Is - fires now almost completely out, at current rate or progress expected to reach Johnston within 3-4 days. Attached ASW and replenishment TF's have now returned to Johnston Is and continuing their movement back to Pearl Harbor. Increased naval search flights have been ordered from Johnston Is to detect and identify any Japanese TF attempting to pursue the U.S. withdrawal. Plans are for the regrouped U.S. carrier force to turn and attack Japanese targets of opportunity moving inside the range of U.S. naval search planes from Johnston Is. The base at Johnston Is contains sufficient fuel points on hand to replenish U.S. carrier TF's, making presence of the replenishment TF unnecessary.

A line of U.S. subs along the eastern approaches to the Marshall Islands chain continue to engage Jap surface TF's moving eastward, two more Jap MSW torpedoed and confirmed sunk. AAR's follow.

Japanese ground forces launch shock attack in attempt to cut the rail line between Liuchow and Tuyun. AAR follows. This move is likely intended to cut off communications between Chinese LCU's holding Liuchow and the main front. As shown on the situation map below, Liuchow is now at the point of a Chinese salient formed as a result of the fall of Kweilin (from the north) and the Japanese advance northward from the Indochina border in the south. It has become very likely that all remaining Chinese mobile LCU's in Liuchow will have to withdraw westward towards Tuyun along the rail line past the location of today's Jap ground attack to avoid being cut off. Several "static" Chinese LCU's remain in Liuchow, the last mobile Chinese LCU's remaining in Liuchow being issued movement orders to Tuyun.

A consequence of the fall of Liuchow to the Japanese is that it opens a continuous rail link between the main Japanese-occupied areas of China southward into Indochina and beyond. This situation could present Pillager with one of two options for the Japanese armies in China: (1) continue attacking in China towards Chungking, or (2) suspend offensive ground ops in China and begin transfer of excess Japanese LCU's from China overland via Indochina to points beyond (i.e. redeploy to Burma/India or NW Australia).

(added) AAR of the Japanese ground attack shown on the map above between Liuchow and Tuyun. It should be noted that many of the Chinese LCU in this action had been in action defending Kweilin and are in a weakened state - these LCU cannot be reliably depended on to hold the rail line without reinforcements (this assuming Pillager does not send in additional Jap LCU to reinforce another attack at this location).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 41,36

Based on available intel records, Jap 49 Heavy AA Bn was transferred to NW Australia from the Kwantung Army. Previous location of 49 AA Bn was Port Arthur on 6/20/42.

Detected status of Jap base in Daly Waters - airfield damage 90, no planes. 16 Jap LCU's.

Hudson I recon over Darwin reports fighters on CAP, 3 Jap TF's (+2 from last report), 912 aircraft (404 fighters, 44 bombers), 12 Jap LCU's (-2 from last report). Hard to imagine Pillager having 900+ Jap planes in Darwin, though all reports are confirming he is moving considerable Jap reinforcements into NW Australia.

I had been in the early stages of planning a future Allied ground offensive from Tennant Creek against Daly Waters - these plans could have considerable value as a diversion to draw Japanese forces into this area from other locations. Available Allied ground forces in NW Australia are sufficient to maintain the "status quo", though may not be enough to attack a reinforced Jap position in NW Australia. While my current preparations may not be sufficient for an effective Allied offensive, they may be very sufficient in terms of creating a diversion. At the very minimum, I can easily keep Daly Waters rendered useless as a Jap air base or jumping off point for attacks.

Hudson I recon over Exmouth reporting 4 Jap LCU's, no other detected forces or activity.

Detected status of Jap base in Port Moresby - 50 aircraft (15 fighters, 20 bombers), 7 Jap LCU's.

Summary of Operations 7/14/43

Central Pacific: U.S. carrier force arrives back in Pearl Harbor. Escort DD's and several cruisers are being swapped out from air combat TF's for refits - these ships replaced with "fresh" DD's and cruisers from ships at anchor in Pearl Harbor base.

Aircraft upgrades also underway for some CV and CVL air units - including

* Two VF squadrons (CV Enterprise, Saratoga) upgrading to F6F Hellcats. Most U.S. VF squadrons continue operating F4F's and will do so until a sufficient number of replacement F6F Hellcats to convert and support air ops come out of production. VF squadron conversion to F6F Hellcats is expected to be completed over the next 1 - 1 1/2 months.

* One FAA fighter squadron on CV Victorious upgrading to Corsair III/IV. A second fighter squadron aboard Victorious continues operating Wildcats.

* Two VT squadrons (CV Enterprise, Lexington) upgrading to TBM's. These are the first two carrier based VT squadrons receiving TBM's - all other VT squadrons are operating TBF's.

* Three VB squadrons (CV Saratoga, Wasp, Hornet) upgrading to SBD-5's. With this upgrade, all carrier based VB squadrons now equipped with SBD-5's.

CA Houston still enroute from Johnston Is to Pearl Harbor - arrival expected in two days.

P-38G fighters were notably successful in air-to-air combat over Daly Waters, even given that average pilot experience for these planes was in the 60's. All intercepting Jap fighters were either destroyed or aborted - no Jap fighters engaged Allied bombers. AAR follows.

Summary of Operations 7/26/43

HQ V Amphibious Force arrived this game turn on the U.S. west coast as a reinforcement. At present there are no available AGC ships in the game - which does not allow movement of V Amphibious Force HQ from the U.S. west coast nor employment of this HQ in support of amphibious operations until AGC ships enter the game in 80-90 days. Two AGC ships are due to arrive as reinforcements at Panama City in 10/43. Time for the AGC ships to travel northward from Panama City to the U.S. west coast to pick up V Amphibious Force HQ plus travel time of these ships from the west coast to the front line operating area will keep HQ V Amphibious Force unavailable for active operations until sometime in 11/43.

There is little doubt that Pillager has an extensively prepared defense set up along the Japanese Outer Perimeter with all key points already heavily defended. Deployment of V Amphibious Force HQ in front line operations is being seen as a necessity to support any successful U.S. amphibious attack against the Japanese Outer Perimeter.
