Reflections on my three operations now I've calmed down a bit, and Raver is doing the turn.

Operation Aspiration was a success for the most part - the parts that didn't work (and most of you know which bloody obvious beaches I didn't storm! Vigan, Noumea, Ambiona, Balikpapan, Samarinda, Tarawa etc.) didn't cost me anything but time.  Raver can't stop me taking them in the next week of play.

My main objectives were to get considerable airpower to Wake (done) and to have already transferred HQs and moved planes to Tainan and Palau this turn so that when next turn, they fly to bases like Kendari, Legaspi, Jolo, Kuching, Brunei (all the bases I've got surface forces covering) I'll be able to exact revenge on any of Raver's ships still in the SRA.  Of course, he's already sunk more than enough to be thrilled with and will escape with his triumphant surface forces to consolidate somewhere and hit back in an organised fashion.

Operation Expectation Was mediocre.  Yes, I slammed the pacific fleet.  Yes I sank 3 BBs, but it cost me 30 planes lost to AA fire to do it.  I would have preferred to not sink any, and lost 15 planes.  Even so, KB remains a force to be worried about, and hopefully Raver's been aggressive with his CVs and I've still got a chance to sink them near Wake.  Next turn will tell (Mavises everywhere out of Wake this turn).

Operation Deviation - almost total failure.  My best surface combat admirals let me down - I intercepted all six of my targets - however I only nailed 1 of them, let three of them escape without damage, and the two lone CL targets Boise and Tromp king hit me.  The tally is 4 destroyers already sunk, 4 more sinking (won't float long enough for Raver's air crews to finish them), 3 destroyers crippled and about to be sunk by dutch pilots, and 2 destroyers with a chance of surviving.  All up 11 destroyers - gone on turn 1.  Not to mention two shattered CLs that won't make it back alive.

Operation Deviation was supposed to make Raver so mad at loosing all his surface forces, that he would send in PoW and Repulse - hopefully to Kuching or Khota Bharu and that would be the end of that (I don't mind revealing this part of the plan because it ain't gonna happen now!!!!!!!).  Christ - he may still show up and I'd loose 4 BBs to his 1 damaged.  grrrrr

Raver is still luckier than he has any right to be.

You've got Boised....

Nice level of detail here for a combined AAR. Very interesting.

Recommend next time your captains attend in-house training. That Swiss Naval War College was a waste of money.

The humiliation continues!

First up, Raver uses the three english dds at Hong Kong to get in a quick punch at Tainan - hitting one of my APD/AP transport groups that are just loading up. Fortunately none of them was sunk, but he damaged 5 to the point that I've cancelled that particular mission within Aspiration. Disappointed troops are unloaded back to Tainan! Then they strayed under the coastal defences at Tainan and got blown to smithereens, and quickly polished off by my bombers.

Sinking three allied DDs still didn't make me feel about the debacle in the Java sea, where Jintsu and Kasanagi get smothered with dutch bombs - Kasanagi goes down with a gurgle and Jinstu is done for. 2 days in, I've lost 5 dds, and 2 CLs and another 5 dds are going to sink in the next 3 turns without any help from Raver.

Raver's luck continues as my Nells find PoW and Repulse and fail to launch any really good hits. Repulse is torpedoed twice, but on the whole it was a lame air raid. One of my nearby subs then launched at Repulse and missed (and got hammered for the trouble). PoW and Repulse have no doubt escaped my net (again). Repulse is damaged so Raver will probably hold her at Karachi and send her straight home when the british withdrawal order comes.

In other action, my troops captured many allied bases - however we failed to take Brunei, Kuching, Rabaul or Menado on our first take. More troops have unloaded to I expect this to work better now - Kendari is up and running with 250+ aircraft, but Raver was too smart to do the whole allied ship exodus from Manila in 1 turn. He's waiting for me to spread my forces out further and then he'll make a run for it after my naval bombers are tired.

Raver's CVs were not spotted in the Wake Island vicinity.

My lightening raids did cuase allied troops to scuttle a few ships though ;)

It is nice that Luskan didnt run the 1st turn a few times before sending it over to make sure it was perfect !!!!

Its always better to have a random start where things go wrong.

That would be going a bit far, agreed. I had a couple of heavier surface TFs "miss" their intercepts - my memory of allied ship placement isn't that good.

Next time it'll be perfect though - because I learnt a lot this time ;)

Obviously everyone just loves the friendly Aussie banter...

My money is on the Aussie who lives just south of Melbourne!

I think Banana boy's plan was alittle ambitious. It seems he was counting on the Allied surface units to just roll over and sink when the lookout shouts "many strange ships sighted port side...about 25,000 yards at 285 degrees closing fast!!!!!". Captain announces..."all hands abandon ship, the Japs got the drop on us...no sense in fighting on!"

Hey Dave, hows life in the weekend Navy? Get to drive any fast boats or fire any large weapons? Say hello to the Wife unit and the kids, Kim and I wish you all well!

Wait guys, Banana boy and Raver didn't even started yet... few more turns and you will all falling down with from the chair

Luskan, 30 planes lost at PH is average result - i think this was introduced in one of earlier patches...

As for the Boise....well... sorry to say that this is is also common result.. you are not the first one...

Yep, everyone knows that Boise was re-fitted in a earlier patch to have photons and force fields. I hunt Boise down with baby KB everytime. I get her most of the time too. Forget about taking her on with surface ships. I hate that blasted ship.

hehe very true, Luskan is Boised poised becasue against me, he even lost 1 CA & 3 DD's and a 4th DD got away with damage. Of course, Boise was lost but in return of a CA and 3 DD's ...

Aye, Boise a 2 CA committment in my games. And even then sometimes a daitai of Nells is needed to finish the damned ship off. The best way to kill the Boise is to destroy it from the air. I destroyed it and all it sister ships at PH in a couple of weeks of aerial attacks. Cost me a lot of good pilots but saved me some even more irreplaceable CLs and CAs.

Sometimes the best way to fight a certain ship is to just approach it from a different angle.

Well, she's a Brooklyn class CL. Basically a CA with CL guns. And lots of good CL guns btw.

My sympathies -- I remember one game of Pacific War where my PH strike went in beautifully, except that none of the many bomb and torpedo hits I obtained were critical. The BB's were repaired in three or four months, and that set the tone for the rest of the game. Raver is indeed lucky, but I think the results against Boise are fairly realistic. It's useful to remember that she was actually a heavy cruiser with 6" guns, and lots of them. Once the Long Lances miss, the Boise outranged any of your IJN guns, and she was theoretically capable of squirting out two shells a second.

The best laid plans of mice and bananas !   Luskan was given a huge free swing on the first turn and he muffed it.  He had a chance to recover on turn two, and guess what?   He muffed it a second time !    Little does he know that he has left a wide gap in his lines which will be suitable exploited in the near future.    Ratbrain is right about Pearl Harbour….from the Japanese POV it is better to damage a lot more ships rather than sink them as it the presents a huge resource drain for the US repair facilities on the west coast.  Not only that but by having all of the repair yards choked with broke ships, it impacts on the ability to do ship upgrades.

China is quite and so far there are no signs of any moves towards a fast rush for Burma

I wonder if I can bluff him in Java a second time round?

Java is already mine.  Wouldn't worry about whatever Raver says in the meantime.  I also love it when he talks about the Japanese POV . . . if only he'd ever played the japs he'd be able to talk about it with any credibility!

He is right about muffing the first strike . . . and the second unfortunately.

I've got a different strategy in China - storming over the Chinese didn't work last time.  This time I'm going to be careful (and unstoppable) by over preparing every battle, stacking the odds way in my favour.

Boise . . . disappeared on turn 2.  Raver's sent her due east probably - in which case she'll get picked up further out.

Of course, my dismal performance has excited a raft of opponents eager to get a piece of my banana.

Gee they write some crap on the back of wine bottles, listen to this............." Following fermentation this wine underwent oak maturation, resulting in a soft and round wine with good length of flavour."     Now fellow readers, I ask you, how the fluck to you measure a "good length of flavour" ??????   These wine companies must hire the biggest ponce that they can find to write this crap......Oooo wait a second......I just remembered that banana boy works for one of these types of companys.  Are you a ponce Luskan?   ( Damn this is a good drop of wine *hic*)

The woman who wrote that label (most of the labels on wine in Australia in fact) is hot, so she gets away with it.

How hot is she? Got a pic?

G'day Mark VII ! Yup Wife Unit Mk 1 is doing fine. We don't have any weapons in Coast Guard as we are here to save lives and educate people about safe boating. However on the my local boat we can get 40 knots out of here, not bad for a 22 year old shark cat

Please pass on all my best to your Wife Unit and give the pet units a pat on the head.

I've got leave from work (at last).  I've had two days off this week, having friday and monday off, spending tuesday with work people at the track (melbourne cup) before I have to get back into it.

Rather than relaxing I'm sitting here agonising about turns that people haven't sent me yet!

Sad isn't it?
