I rarely drink these days, but was talked into it by good company on a busines trip a couple of weeks back. I thought I had been mugged when I looked at my wallet the next morning!

Afternoon to ya Knuckles - so what's up over at the Steakhouse today??
:<

A denial of service attack from a searchbot. The data base recorded a single IP address that generated tens of thousands of hits in the space of several minutes. We're working on it.

Not that it was a deliberate denial of service attack as far as I know, but there are these webcrawler thingys that visit and crawl through every page of a website. The damage report lists a visit by an "Unknown robot (identified by 'robot')" that generated 33725 hits on "26 Jun 2007 at 14:11" And sucked up 1.67 GB of bandwidth, which crashed the site.
The average bandwith used by MCS to serve the 1500 or so unique vistors every day is less than 600 MB, and the typical search bot such as google uses 10 MB or less.

This is just for the people that are really interested. Plus I got little else to do but wait for the server to reset itself, as I aint enough of a geek to figure out how to reset the "max query limit" manually.

From the error message it looks like a DB parameter threshold has been reached for a particular user. Clearling the attribute for the indicated user might be one step in the fix process, but obviously the root cause seems to be the bot attack. I used phBB for a small internal project a couple of years ago ..but my resident "internal hack" experts (which we used to AVOID attacks from the outside) would not allow me to use it even for full company use ... too vulnerable ... long term fix might be a different package or else major mods to that package .. but more secure package might actually be cheaper ... unless you have a good anti-hack dev that will help for free ...

I enjoy the social aspect of hanging out at the bar with all of my friends. Drinking just kinda goes along with that.

Nope. What remark was that? I tried a Faber once on the MkII Thread when I was without PBEM turns and gave up through boredom and loneliness. It was a Sunday morning I think.

Oh - bored with actually trying to write a faber... yeah, it can be tough... most of us try to go with a "stream of consciousness" thing...

My remark was something like "i wonder if anyone ever reads what i put in a faber?"

Well, actually when you posted that "some citizens turned to cannibalism" I started to think about the meaning of 'some' when it comes to China...

Maybe more like:

You know, if you watch this closely, you'll see a different smiley come in and eat the smiley that ate the previous smiley, etc, etc..... That will make for one fat smiley.

Note: The server was down here all day and you goofballs put 10 pages on the new and improved thread. How's one to keep up?
