Won my first game with CAW. I sunk CV Zuitaku, and damaged CV Shokaku, and turned back the attempted landings.

The final score was U.S. 334 to Japan 44. This is a very addicting game.

Alvin I totally agree. I would consider Carriers at War to be "the best war game I've bought this century" .

I haven't played the game for a week now owing to a busy schedule and I just fired up the Coral Sea as the US. I've played it countless times.

Owing to a good degree of short term memory loss (owing to that busy schedule ) the scen just ended and my heart is thumping like I can't believe - because the scen could have gone anyone's way.

After maneuvering for a day, the Japs spotted me first! I thought game over! But I found myself under the cover of a thick storm and for once, the Jap flyers couldn't hit a thing. The AI is human after all! Yorktown came out unscathed and Lex hadn't yet been found. I couldn't believe it. I had a chance to respond! For 4 game days we played cat and mouse and the perserverence paid off.

When a game makes me want to give in because its AI is too good but its system is so friendly, that it says "come on hang around this is a quick playing game" and then your own strategy and tactics make a difference. Well! This is my book, says classic!

Congrats on your win Alvin . I can't wait to see the plans that SSG has for this game.

Adam.

Hey Adam! Just curious, what games would be your comparison for "the best game I've bought this century?"

I agree with the edge of the seat nerves while playing CAW. The suspense is great! I have been playing Coral Sea exclusively. CAW has also caused me to go back and play WitP Coral Sea.

I keep track of the weather and stay close to the storm fronts, so that I can duck into them if I need to. I was spotted by the Japanese, and knew a stike would be comming soon, so I went to flank and headed into the weather. When the strike arrived it was very inaccurate due to the thunderstorms, and they did not hit anything.

I agree that the pulse gets rapid when the situation is dicey, and you don't know who will come out the victor. I was able to strike one of the Japanese carrier strike force, and do severe damage, so that they were not effective for the rest of the game. I sunk the CV Zuitaku and damaged the Shokaku enough for it to detatch. Of course I did not find this out until the scenario was over.

Thanks for the feedback.

CCAW - The Coral Sea/USA. Sometimes you make all the right moves and sometimes despite playing hide and seek, you get caught with your pants down, but you just know it is time to be bold.

I was planning to use bad weather between Australia and New Guinea, but it failed to materialize when and where I needed it. In the meantime, I had an ill defined contact distant and to the East. Now, perhaps I should have developed it further, but so far South what could it be if not a carrier force trying to clear the path for invasion?

So, without confirmation and throwing caution to the wind, I launched any of my dive bombers that could just make it out there. I had intentionally isolated my B17s from the PBYs so that I could use them for long range bombing too. I didn't expect that they would hit anything, but I was hoping for them to scatter the enemy fighters.

It's looking like maybe it was the right thing to do. I intend to run down that TG overnight and use my torpedo bombers in the morning to finish off anything still afloat.

At which point, I could play it conservative and park off of Port Moresby and run down the clock. Or I could proceed North and see if I can sink some troop transports. Of course, if I am not careful the Japanese CVLs could redeem the situation for them. Hmm, what to do?

Early estimates report very positive strike results. Should I trust the pilots?

Very nice Mark

I got lucky ducking into the storm, but it does not always work out. I do know that once a recconnesance aircraft has been spotted over my TF, its time to scoot somewhere else in a hurry. It seems to increase the chance of the enemy strike force losing you.

I love the screen shots of the original you have been posting. I would like to get a hold of the original game to play. The graphics look good to me. I am an oldtime PACWAR player and still bring that one out on occasion and I own War in the Pacific. Graphics are nice but they are secondary if the game plays well.

Here are the final screens. I just finished playing that one.

I decided to move North of Tulagi and keep the pressure on the Japanese. I retired TG 17.5 and TG 17.2 to Townsville after the flight decks could no longer be operated.

I then rebased a lot of my AC back to Port Moresby during the final 24 hours to deter an invasion along with stationing TG 17.3 to cover the approach. But past experience has shown me that the Japanese won't go for the landing without having air superiority.

Alvin,

It seems to me that if you run at flank as soon as you get a search plane contact (provided you know in which direction to run) that you should be able to add another 100nm between you and the enemy. That might be enough to prevent some of the strike force from reaching you.

I have had quite a few attacks made against my TG in the late day. Pretty much you get the inbound warning. With CCAW, I also get details of enemy waves inbound such as number of zeros, kates, ... In quite a few cases, I see red icons mill around briefly, but the inbound waves never even strike. Since if they were to strike, I would get animation of the attack.

I agree. After I hit their carriers, I noticed the attacks on Port Moresby started to wane. After this I parked TF 17.3 outside of Port Moresby and no landing attempt was made. The Japanese carrier task force that I smashed was not far off the coast of Townsville which suprised me. This was bold of the Japanese. I will not go north of Gili Gili unless I am sure of Air Superiority. Rabul is a Hornets nest and you will surely lose your ships.

Keep the ARR's coming.

Very interesting. In CCAW, I have tried numerous times to sucker the Japanese to approach Townsville (since I rebase my planes from Port Moresby there; I don't think you can do squadron transfers in CAW).

In CCAW, the Japanese rarely approach closer than 600nm of Townsville. I find this kind of funny, since the B-17s and Hudsons have yet to hit a single ship with a bomb in all the time that I have been playing. No wonder why they needed to fire bomb German cities ... since they cannot hit a barn or aircraft carrier with one of these heavy bombers! :)

I forgot this one. I haven't played out a full game in CAW yet. Does CAW have the same wise-*ss endings that CCAW has?

Congrats on the victory, Alvin. I had a similar result in that I sunk the Zuikaku and damaged the Shokaku. While the Lexington made it out unscathed, the Yorktown was damaged and forced to seek refuge within Rockhampton's port. Luckily I still managed to eke out a decisive victory.

Very fun game indeed.

Great job Flintlock. I got lucky getting out with no damage. The only airstrike the Japanese were able to send my way arrived in a Thunderstorm, and none of them made any hits.

Mark

The ending screen just gives you your final score, and victory level. It would be a nice addition if they did this for CAW in a future patch.

This is a fun game.

Hey Adam! Just curious, what games would be your comparison for "the best game I've bought this century?"

Well, I shoplift a lot

No, till now my candidates for "War Game of the Century" would be in order:

- Battles in Normandy (SSG/Matrix)
- Squad Battles Vietnam (Tiller/HPS)
- Close Combat Invasion Normandy (Atomic/Red Ant)
- Age of Empires 3 (Ensemble/Microsoft)
- Julius Caesar (Koios/Matrix)

Shogun Total War just misses out for a terribly buggy v1.0 release with some shoddy gameplay decisions introduced with Mongol Invasion. Coulda been the contender.

My other notables are all 20th Century

Carrier's at War tops the heap and that says a lot of itself, how much more so for a version 1.0 release? My .02.

Hi Adam,

Agreed. CAW is one of the best games I've bought this year. I have over 10 other computer games waiting for me to open them, and I keep coming back to CAW for "one more". The mark of a classic ...

This was a much easier battle as the Japanese. I massed my four carriers against the Americans and quickly took out one carrier and then the other. After that, I literally cornered the Americans in the South East end of the map. It was an easy invasion of Port Mo. The only reason the Americans finished the scenario with anything still floating was due to lack of time on my part. If I had another few days, I guess I could have sank them all. Screen shots follow.
