My wife and I are headed for New Zealand in about five weeks-with a few days in Tahiti on the way back. We will be mostly on the south Island (NZ). Ten days with a camper van. What should be take a look at?

The South Island of NZ is one of my favourite places. I guess of you are only there for ten days you won't be doing any walking (tramping in the local lingo), which is what I was doing there, mainly.

There are lots of scenic areas in the South Island, but I would head to Fjordland - the SW corner, basically. That is where most of the best scenery is, including the area around Queenstown and Milford Sound. There are a couple of famous glaciers on the West coast as well, Fox and Franz Joseph, which cater for tourist visits.

Alternatively, there are some very good wineries (e.g. Stoneleigh) in the NE area of the South Island if that is your thing.

Rotorua is worth looking at, although it is on the North Island.

Thanks,

We have been told to see Rotorua, but regretfully due to our time constraints have decided to stick to the South Island.

We won't be overnight hiking but my wife and I like to hike a few miles each day weather permitting. I hear that there can still be a lot of snow in September and early spring is avalance season. I don't know how much time we will spend in the mountains but won't to see them if we can.

If you do take AB's advice and go to Queenstown, just note that there are several skifields near Queenstown.

take a ride on the shotover jet boat at Queenstown, flat speed boat type thing that only needs 5cm of water, it lasts about 30-40 mins and the drivers are crazy - doing 360 degree turns - you will have about 15 people in the boat - great fun - wife and i did tahiti and new zealand for honeymoon this time last year

Thanks, we will make a point of seeing the Queenstown area. My wife wants to go whale watching. Perhaps I can negotiate a visit to the aircraft museum in trade. Tit for tat.
