i remember someone won medals for shooting (?pistol) - i'll look this up (or is this one you are supposed to know cold?)

Status: offline 		I'll take a shot at irrelevant's question:  Admiral Raymond 'Ben' Bass, gold medal in rope climbing, 1932 Olympics.  Don't know his other medals, but his submarine, USS Plunger, was awarded a Navy Unit Citation. Plunger was engaged in a 65 hour convoy battle which it ended by surfacing to destroy a Japanese vessel (presumably an escort) with its deck gun.  Sounds as though, after 65 hours, everyone had just had enough.

If you look closely at Robert E at Appomatox you can see the scar on his neck where they amputated the other one!!

The direct link between the US withdrawal from Vietnam & Sept 11,

Master Sargeant Max Bielke was the last US soldier to board an evacuation plane at Tan Son Nhat Airport.

Sadly, he was killed in the Sept 11 bombing of the Pentagon.

Thanks for the post. I did not realise the victor of the Battle of Gaudalcanal II was an Olympic multi medal winner. A brilliant man.
