New to me. I don't know much from the genre.

Thanks for joining in guys. I will listen to these and then post my second choice.

This is really tough, trying to imagine that I will never hear another song (apart from the 20 I select) again!

Is this island in hell? Because I can see the Macarena being sung there often if so.

Any world without music sounds like hell to me - but yes, probably better no music than the Macarena

Mmm I liked the Florence and the Machine no. The Cult is well known to people of my age group, but I confess was never one of my fave's. Both Howlin' Wolf and Labi Siffre (except something inside so strong) are outside of my usual musical tastes but I quite like Spoonful.

Onto nos. 2 and 3/20

I am going to go for two Disco tracks (maybe a 3rd later if there is room). Ridiculously difficult choice to have to make, but there are two that really stand out for me:

Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Till You Get Enough.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZorRGrDiMsA

Upbeat and funky and with just soooo much going on - synths, drums, bass, cowbells (of course ), trumpets, strings - just a cacophony of wonderful noise that makes you want to dance - even though you know you can't!

McFadden and Whitehead - Ain't No Stopping Us Now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DY0tsKCB4lc

Even though this is supposed to be an inspiring little no. I actually find this quite a sad song which is probably why I like it...

LOL. I'd rather chew broken glass than ever hear that song again. I went to a basketball game back in the late 90s, and they played that song every 20 seconds when there was a break or a foul. I was close to tears. Another basketball game later and instead it was 'whoomp there it is'.

I never went to another basketball game.

Wow - simply wow. This track is almost 18 minutes of almost indescribable, unadulterated, musical genius, hairs on the back of your neck standing fully to attention, eardrums suitably assaulted. What is absolute quality until the 12th minute (including the tribute to the war dead at 8 minutes) turns into an orgy of brilliance thereafter - the chanting and whistling on top of a string sound so exquisite you want to kiss it - and all the while the relentless, unfailingly, hypnotic beating of the drums.

Underworld - And I Will Kiss

The fact that my eldest warspite played on it helps too

That is the definitive background music for any epic game. Got it rolling now.

Listened to it twice. I really enjoyed that. It may come as a shocker to you but Im not the most cultured person out there. Yes, its true. I boil crawfish I find under rocks and logs. lol but I really dug that.

I think the word you were looking for as far as the drums go is methodical and not monotonous. A simple beat on the drums can go a long way. Hence, my next selection, inspired by just that. (line skipping) Great drums from a small set and a moving Clapton song. Score another one for the Brits. The boy from Ripley.

Motherless Children

I like the funk here. Good post. The second song kind of had a Doobie Bro's feel; a bit of soul into a jazz/rock beat. Heart had a good funk sound early on. i.e. Heartless.

Not so much into retro stuff or techno. Just never caught on for me.

Mmmm...maybe the word relentless fits better.

I don't know much Clapton - except of course Layla . This one is not bad - and you're right, the drums add interest here.

Well....

I am not going for my top 20 favourite songs. I am going for the top of various musical genres - ish. So be prepared for some fun and games.

Enjoyed listening to everything so far. Even the disco.....

Best wishes,
Steve

Okay good - I am approaching in a similar fashion. If these are the last 20 songs I will hear then I want a mix of styleees to see me through.

Do the top 20 have to be in order? If so, then the Cult's song is farther down my list... I can't do a top 20 justice. Best thing I can is pick 20 awesome songs and say, 'yeah, those are the ones I want on that deserted island.' Even doing that is nearly impossible. After all, if we're headed to a deserted island, why can't we take a 40 gig Ipod and run a solar charger on it?

Okay here is no. 5 of 20.

Cee Lo Green - Mary Did You Know.

If I'm stuck on a desert island I could probably do with some divine intervention to get me rescued .

However, I have chosen this because a) the tune is very sad (my default setting) b) the lyrics are beautiful and c) its very well sung

a) No not in order
b) These are the only songs you will ever hear again - so what you choose and why is entirely up to you
c) Yes - if you love music then choosing 20 is almost impossible
d) Don't be a smart arse - you have 20 choices - that's all

It's this stonkingly dark toon from Blutengel. It's sung in German so I have no idea what is being sung - but that does not seem to matter. The track is sung in a melancholy Germanic stylee, with a wonderful synthesized string background. Wunderbar!

No one does "wrist-slitter" quite like The Smiths, but there are far better versions done by other people of some of their songs. This is an example - its sung by Emily Browning and is taken from the film Sucker Punch.

Anyone guess what this song is about?

I'm working on it! Give me a second. Rome wasn't built in a day, and either will this list of R.O.C.K.

Shouldn't that picture (and comment) be in the Australian Beauties thread?
