With your musical tastes so "eloquently" spammed on this thread, I fear "Dumpster Fire" is a more apt contribution of yours.

Well that ABBA is not to everyone's taste I accept - though is perhaps more than a little surprising given the genius of the compositions and the beauty of the voices - but to not like Arcade Fire either?

Goodness

But never mind. An Officially Official Arcade Fire Top (20?) will follow shortly.

I realised this morning that I have not got an ABBA playlist on my Ipod. I know roight?

Anyway, I intend to rectify that glaring omission by selecting 10-12 tracks. From comments recently I know that this will be an eagerly anticipated event so stay tuned as I count down the official bestest ABBA tracks of all time

Edit: Yeah right. 10-12? Impossible to whittle down less than 20.

I notice that you succeeded in getting ten ABBA tracks last time you made the list.

1. I Wonder (The Album)
2. The Name of the Game (The Album)
3. Last Summer (Super Trouper)
4. S.O.S (ABBA)
5. The Winner Takes It All (Super Trouper)
6. Eagle (The Album)
7. Summer Night City - (Greatest Hits volume II - why was this classic not out on an album?)
8. As Good As New (Voulez-Vous))
9. My Love and My Life (Arrival)
10. The Visitors (The Visitors)

Well that was tough! Soooo many incredible tracks......

Well this time I thought I'd do it properly - and add the music for each too.

So in two years the number 1 remains number 1 Yeah, got to be happy with that

Yes... well... while a nice list I can not agree on that you did in properly. Last time I muttered that you missed two great tunes but it was maybe understandable since it was only a top ten list. But with a top 20 list it is almost scandalous that Fernando and Chiquitita is not included in the list.

I thought someone might be up in arms over Dancing Queen (just can't listen to that song anymore) and maybe Fernando, but Chiquitita... not so much.

It suddenly occurred to me that Dancing Queen, Waterloo, and Fernando are the only Abba songs I know. Perhaps my low opinion is due to inadequate sample size (said as a lightning bolt struck him)?

Okay here we go with an Arcade Fire The Officially official Top 12

Apparently in particle physics, supersymmetry (SUSY) is a proposed type of spacetime symmetry that relates two basic classes of elementary particles: bosons, which have an integer-valued spin, and fermions, which have a half-integer spin.

But that's all cobblers because supersymmetry is the first of the Arcade Fire offerings. The song is about 11 minutes long but for all intents and purposes stops at about 5 minutes. I have no idea what they were thinking of for the next 6 minutes - but they were obviously in arty farty mode (not, I am pleased to say, a sign of things to come). Anyway, that does not take away from the excellent opening 5 which is all you need to listen to.

No.12 Supersymmetry (Album: Reflektor - 2013)

I know you're living in my mind
It's not the same as being alive

Next up we have one of two tracks from their second album Neon Bible. God knows what it means but the track is great, featuring a wonderful organ intro.

No.11 Intervention (Album: Neon Bible - 2007)

Working for the Church while your family dies
You take what they give you and you keep it inside
Every spark of friendship and love will die without a home
Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

Into the top 10 and we kick this off with the first offering from the truly outstanding Suburbs album. This track evidences one of the things I most like about many of Arcade Fire's songs - the song changes direction at least once. In this case the last 1 minute 30 seconds picks up the bass as the drums kick in and the song builds to its crescendo.

No. 10 Suburban War (Album: The Suburbs 2010)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNdqoQWz34E

But you started a war
That you can't win
They keep erasing all the streets we grew up in

Now the music divides
Us into tribes
You choose your side and I'll choose my side

Now things get really tough in the order department. The Suburbs provides the next track. Yet another song that builds and build and changes direction at least once and yet again the song takes on a new life about a minute or so before the end when an otherwise very good song becomes a classic. Qualiteeeeee

No. 9 We Used to Wait (Album: The Suburbs 2010)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nTjn1yJp0w

So I never wrote a letter
I never took my true heart
I never wrote it down
So when the lights cut out
I was lost standing in the wilderness downtown

Arcade Fire's debut album Funeral provides their only entry in the top 12 - and its this stirring, upbeat number. Great piano the whole way through the track, along with the usual guitars, drums and strings all providing the perfect back drop for Win Butler's voice.

No.8 Rebellion (Lies) (Album: Funeral 2005)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNfWC4Sgkcs

People say that you'll die
Faster than without water
But we know it's just a lie
Scare your son and scare your daughter

Well the top seven is ridiculously tough to put into some sort of order. I know the top 3 (but not the order yet) and its the same with the next 4.

Ho hum. For the next track I am going to plump for It's Never Over. Another tune that features more than one direction - a great intro leads into a superb guitar solo and away we go. This is an unusual track amongst the top 12 as its the only one that is led by Win Butler's missus, Regine Chassagne (on reflection maybe I should have included Sprawl II in the Top 12 ). Oh well its done now.

No.7 It's Never Over (Hey Orpheus) (Album: Reflektor 2011)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7-tEZUvdUw

Just wait until it's over
Wait until it's through
And if I call for you
Oh, Orpheus!
Just sing for me all night
We'll wait until it's over
Wait until it's through

Neon Bible presents its second and last offering - leaving the road open for the fantastic The Suburbs and Reflektor to provide the top 5.

This was a grower - didn't appreciate it at first. But this track changes direction so many times it takes a while to appreciate its majesty. The trademark drums, guitars are all there in force as is the big build up at the end. Its a wonderful cacophony of sound and its all just so brilliant.

No.6 No Cars Go (Album: Neon Bible 2007)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83KR_UBWdPI

We know a place where no spaceships go
We know a place where no subs go
Hey!
No cars go
Hey!
No cars go
Where we know
Hey!
Us kids know
Hey!
No cars go

This next song is one I simply should not like. Its Jonathan Ross featuring Arcade Fire and You Already Know. The background to this incredible, upbeat, but quite sad track is a sort of rockabilly sound (that I normally dislike) but here it works perfectly. One word: absolutely bloody brilliant.

No.5 You Already Know (Album: Reflektor 2013)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCQW--8VYN0

Sometimes it moves so fast
Sometimes it moves so fast
If you stop to ask
It's already passed
So how can you move so slow?
How can you move so slow?
You missed it, you know
You missed it

Top 4 now and this one just fails to make it to the podium - which shows just how monstrously good the top 3 must be. Kasparov - Deep Blue 1996. This is a sad toon, but oddly even the lower tempo sad tracks have so much life. If this song were a lady I would have married her and had her babies years ago.

No.4 Deep Blue (Album: The Suburbs 2010)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDIRT_NEMxo

Nothing less than the full lyrics will suffice here.

Here
In my place and time
And here in my own skin
I can finally begin
Let the century pass me by
Standing under night sky
Tomorrow means nothing

I was only a child then
Feeling barely alive when
I heard a song from the speaker of a passing car
And prayed to a dying star
The memory's fading
I can almost remember singing
La la, la la la la la
La la, la la, la la la la

We watched the end of the century
Compressed on a tiny screen
A dead star collapsing and we could see
That something was ending
Are you through pretending
We saw the signs in the suburbs?

You could never predict it
That it could see through you
Kasparov - Deep Blue 1996
Your mind's playing tricks now
Show is over so take a bow
We're living in the shadows of...
La la, la la la la la

Hey
Put the cellphone down for a while
In the night there is something wild
Can you hear it breathing?
And hey
Put the laptop down for a while
In the night there is something wild
I feel it, it's leaving me

La la, la la, la la la la

Here is a quote and opinion of a very talented singer and musician:

And Robert (warspite1), I thought of you when I saw this and this is no disrespect to you my friend...this forum would not be the same without you!

Hi Patrick I don’t take you posting this as you meaning any disrespect towards me – firstly because I don’t think you are like that and, secondly, because I don’t see how it can.

What do I mean by the latter?

Well the article you posted is about a very successful musician from one musical genre, telling the world he thinks another very successful musician who represents another musical genre is, essentially, musically untalented and that he can neither sing, write nor play.

I don’t know Kanye West from a personal perspective and, with the exception of perhaps two songs which I happen to like, I could not tell you what he has done professionally. Indeed I do not know to what extent he ‘created’ either of the songs I am aware of (although know he based stronger on a track by Daft Punk).

That said, as soon as I read the headline ‘David Crosby on….’ (and saw a picture of an ageing man next to the headline) my brain immediately linked David Crosby with something to do with Crosby, Stills and Nash – a group name I had heard of. And here is the interesting thing bearing in mind what I said about my very limited knowledge of Mr West.

I looked up David Crosby Hits on google and his top 10 came up. Do you know what? I don’t know a single one. I suspect it’s possible that I may recognise one or two if I heard them played, but I wouldn’t count on it. That casts no judgement on Crosby Stills and Nash or Mr Crosby’s musical ability in particular – they were clearly successful - it just says that theirs (as far as I know) is not my sort of music, and I don’t recall them being commercially successful in the UK.

So what does that tell me? Well it tells me that in this article someone I have vaguely heard of has insulted someone I have heard of a little bit more. Wow. I’ve had more important events in my life .

In the post you said Mr Crosby is a very talented singer and musician and so clearly this article is important to you because a man whose music you like and respect is essentially affirming your view of another musician as being a talentless waste of space. That’s fine, that’s human, and that’s your opinion. But at the end of the day Mr Crosby is only stating his opinion (and to which he is entitled and certainly appears, from a music perspective, to have earned the right to).

But for all the things that you and I don’t like about Mr West, from what we know about him, can we deny there is a talent there? Okay it’s not a talent Mr Crosby appreciates, it’s not a talent you appreciate, and for 99% of the time it’s not a talent I appreciate – but he has sold a lot of records so Mr West certainly has something and it means something to a lot of people. Mr Crosby says that Mr West has no talent but not all musicians have the same level of ability - how many of his hit songs did Elvis Presley write? How many instruments did he play?

The final thing of course is that I sense a lot of antipathy towards Mr West generally comes from who he is, his erratic behaviour and the lifestyle he chooses to lead. I am not saying that this is part of Mr Crosby’s thinking – maybe he really just doesn’t like his music (that Mr West apparently can’t play anyway ). But if there is something of this in what he said well perhaps he should get his own life in order. As I said, I didn’t – before this evening – know anything about Mr Crosby. One quick check on Wiki and what do I find? Drug user, jail time for drugs and weapons offenses, drink-driving, a hit and run and driving into someone’s garden – sounds like he’s lucky not to have killed someone.

Mmmm maybe on second thoughts these two gentlemen would actually like each other if they met – just don’t offer up background music .

Well said Robert, I don't disagree on anything you said. I guess a lot of this generation doesn't understand 50's thru the 70's music. To me Rap is poetry put to a beat, but there is so much anger and hate to it and it can be disturbing.
It's time to listen to some 60's British Invasion...
