we´re flying above the max ceiling of the enemy flak and still seem to achieve a couple of hits. Perhaps I switch all my heavy bombers to such high alt attacks. If we attack with 150 bombers we should achieve something like 40-50 hits on the runway which should be enough to keep an airfield closed.

excellent attack by Hortlund! Those Betties were coming from Rabaul (18 hexes! ) and torch 82 Mitchells on the ground for the loss of 27 of their own. Hortlund has been flying recon for a long time already, so I was a bit alerted but I never spotted huge numbers of bombers on New Guinea so I felt kind of safe. As it seems now I have to fly my bombers in the day I do an attack and then fly them out to a base further South (Charter Towers, Townsville or Cairns) which are bigger bases where I can have 250 bombers and 150 fighters on Cap. Those Betties could have hit an empty base also as my bombers were set to attack Thursday Island but they stayed home unfortunately. It doesn´t really hurt us as there are more than enough Mitchells in the pool, not to talk about the 2500 USAAF pilots in the pool (lost half a dozen pilots today), but I don´t want to imagine if I would have had my 200 4E bombers at Cooktown and 82 of them would have been destroyed. If he has lost a dozen high exp Navy pilots then I don´t have a problem to trade those 80 Mitchells. Nevertheless, really a nice attack...

an unsuccessful ASW attack gives Hortlund the intel that we have CVs in this area. I don´t know where he has his CVs (guess they are at Truk) but today long range patrol aircraft have spotted a CA CA CA CA CA CA BB TF a couple of hexes South of Gili Gili! Probably only AKs but 5 hexes South of Gili Gili is strange. And with the free intel the game gives us (I see this spotted TF in the upper right corner, so this means there are more TFs in the hex) I´m really sceptical about what´s going on here. Gili Gili and PM have received HUNDREDS of fighters so it´s obvious that Hortlund is up to something. Probably it´s a resupply or even reinforcement convoy for PM or Thursday Island, but it´s still strange to see it a couple of hexes South of Gili Gili. We´ve got no intel on the heading of the TF but it "should" move North. He knows that my CVs are near Rockhampton so we probably will see the 250 Betties that attacked Cooktown yesterday on naval strike now. This is nothing I want to take on with 150 F4-F4 on Cap so the carriers are going South 4 hexes tomorrow but they will stay alerted. 3 or 4 of my carriers damaged or even sunk at this phase of the campaign could be a major problem.

While I have some problems with the mod too (probably far less thans with stock though) I think it´s like Nik said: the overall picture looks good, so again thanks for the work he puts into creating the mod!

While I have some problems with the mod too (probably far less thans with stock though) I think it´s like Nik said: the overall picture looks good, so again thanks for the work he puts into creating the mod!

aww......

If your havin fun, then it was worth the effort.

we´re now 15 months into the campaign and the longer we play I think that the overall picture definetely looks better than stock, while Hortlund seems to be of different oppinion! But I´m sure he´s enjoying the PBEM too. I think it has made the Japanese far stronger (just from the two facts that they get serious numbers of bombers trough Cap and that they have flak that can make bases nearly immune to air attacks), while Hortlund thinks it has CRIPPLED the Japanese (because of the fact that he can´t take down more than 5-10% of my attacking bombers with defending fighters - while he still can damage 100% and take down another 5% with his flak). But I think we´re both just ranting around!

again, thanks for the work you put into your mod!

Thursday Island has been reinforced with aircraft (base must be 100% damaged, airfield between 60 and 80%). We torch more than a dozen aircraft on the ground for the loss of 2 B-24. With the high exp bomber crews it seems to work to attack bases above effective flak altitude. This is the way to go against those bases where Hortlund has stacked several AA units. Even if only a couple of bombers is damaged by fighters during the attack, the number of operational bombers went down by another 30, so if you want to keep up a decent number of operational bombers you shouldn´t fly more than 2 attacks per week, better would be only one per week, but that would then be not enough to keep an airfield surpressed. It will take another 6-10 months until I will have 400 4Es on the map to fly constant long range airattacks (against uncapped targets).

Interesting, it seems the big convoys aren´t going to PM, they seem to be heading towards Thursday Island. Well, Thursday Island is more or less a death trap as this base can only be supplied via convoys, whereas PM could draw supplies over the trails from Buna, which means it can never really be starved.

most of those attacks are completely useless as Hortlund just sits there looking his flak taking down my bombers... the fact that he abandoned or overstacked his bases with fighters makes his bases more or less imune to attacks and so the front is just like a brickwall. When I look at the front line bases then it normally looks like this: 100.000 troops, with hundreds of flak guns and 150 fighters on Cap, of course behind level 9 forts. Go ahead and send 5 divisions against such a base. With 80% of the bombers going through Cap and our stacking limit of 550 carrier based aircraft/hex an invasion against such bases can only fail.

the only positive happening this turn. 12 hexes East of the Southern Philipines is a oil loaden big TK hit. That one should be 90% sunk even though it doesn´t show up as heavily damaged. Interesting to find an oil loaden TK TF here. Seems like Hortlund uses very uncommon shipping lanes. Will despatch some subs into this area, far away from Helens on ASW...

Ground combat at Rossel Island

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 198 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 7

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese max assault: 12 - adjusted assault: 14

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 14 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Rossel Island base !!!

Japanese paras are dropped onto the dot base...

tomorrow will be a turn that will be very important and can either give me another setback for a month or more or it will mean that we will make progress. I have flown my 96 operational Corsairs to Tenimbar and they will sweep Lautern (Eastern Timor) where we have spotted 136!!! Tojos on Cap today. My Marine squadrons are between 55 and 63 exp and they will meet IJAAF sentais with 75-82 exp so Hortlund will probably have another happening to cheer about when my Corsairs are shot out of the sky BUT they will be followed by 72 Lightnings (79 exp) and 180 Mitchells from Darwin (range 6 = normal range = full bomb load) AND another 24 Lightnings (63 exp) and 150 B17/B24 from Wyndham. At the end of the day I expect to have destroyed at least 150 IJAAF fighters in the air and on the ground for the loss of 50-60 fighters and 20 bombers. And I expect Lautern (level 6 af) to be closed. Then we will take out Timors bases in the next weeks or hopefully destroy a lot more Japanese fighters if Hortlund decides to fight it out. Goal would be to draw in Zero daitais to take out the 80+ exp pilots. As soon as those Zero pilots with 80+ exp are dead we will come closer to the collapse of the Japanese Empire as without those high exp Zero pilots he can´t do much against my upcoming invasions. As long he has some IJN pilot in the pool (I guess there are around 100 left) he will get 65 exp pilots as replacement but as soon as the pool is dry, he will surely regret that he wanted a hr about no fighter pilot ground attack training. His 35 exp pilots in inferior aircraft won´t have much of a chance against my 55 exp pilots. The problem I have now is that I think (and I told him before) that I doubt that the game will go on as soon as I regularly achieve 8-10:1 kill rates.

If he keeps them in reserve and waits for my invasions then we will have to pay a heavy price in the near future.

The air battles over Timor begin...

Day Air attack on Lautem , at 33,78

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 119

Allied aircraft
F4U-1 Corsair x 93

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 57 destroyed, 5 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
F4U-1 Corsair: 14 destroyed, 34 damaged

93 out of 96 Corsairs are flying the ordered sweep and the battle begins with the IJAAF fighters having the bounce, hitting VMF-111 hard, downing 11 Corsairs pretty fast for only 2 or 3 Tojos shot down. This was the moment when I thought we would get our ass kicked. The Japanese bounce phase was over when the Marines got the upper hand, downing more and more enemy aircraft. Then our fighters gained tactical advantage and bounced the defenders when it turned out to become a massacre. The Tojos had not a single chance anymore and their formations were shot down in no time. The battle ended and half of the enemy Cap was no more. The Corsair proved to be a killer, even if our pilots are only in the mid 50s to mid 60s. Excellent work Marines!

Today, everything seems to work as ordered. After the Corsairs have left the scene the bombers from Darwin go in with a high experienced Lightning escort. Right from the beginning our FG was able to bounce the defending Cap and it was no problem for the fast fighters to take down nearly all of the remaining fighters on Cap. Unbelievable for me at this point. Then the bombers achieve an excellent hit rate on the airfield. Flak isn´t as heavy as expected.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And the last to show up are the heavies from Wyndham with another Lightning squadron as escorts (exp mid 60s). Only half a dozen enemy fighters were left that could be shot down. At the end of the day we have destroyed 123 enemy fighters on Timor for the loss of only 19 fighters and 7 bombers. A result I couldn´t even dream about. As there were so many shot down A2A I´m sure Hortlund has also lost A LOT of his pilots, for sure 60+. After this completely devastating attack Hortlund has moved all his aircraft out from Timor, leaving only some recon aircraft behind (at least this is what my recon tells me). This also means I can now start to knock out Timor with my bombers that can go in against any opposition. If the enemy will show up again my Corsairs (or the Lightnings if out of Corsair range) will take care of the enemy fighters. Ships going to Timor are now in real danger...

It´s the same situation like in Burma before. As soon as we were able to do one big strike the area is abandoned by the enemy airforce. In Burma it´s a wise decision as there are enough ground troops on the continent that can defend Burma easily, but Timor is different. In fact, when looking at those results of today, the enemy can´t fight for airsuperiority over Timor, perhaps in the far West where only my P-38 can fly escort but for sure not on the Eastern part of the island where my Corsairs now rule the sky. With this excellent result, I´m now seriously thinking about taking the route via Timor straight into the SRA, something I´ve never done before. With the appearance of the Corsair, every enemy base within a level 2 airfield is now really hard to defend.

KUDOS!!

The question now is how many of your Corsairs are damaged??
How soon do you start getting your P-47s??

Does he have any A6M3a Zeros?? They were doing well against my Corsairs.
Then he had Jacks meet my B-24s and finally, they were not indestructible.

85% of my Corsairs were operational after this sweep, this is excellent. I´m getting P-47C from now on 3/43 But they have only 6 hexes range so this isn´t that much of help. He already has A6M3a but they surely won´t do much better than the ones he already has A6M3, at least not against Corsairs I guess. And there won´t be any Jacks before early 44 in Nimod! By then, the standard IJNAF pilot will have an experience of 35...

hmmmmmmm seems like Hortlund hit the lucky side of the coin. 43 B-17 (average exp 83!!!) attack a TF consisting of big IJN minelayers from Darwin and score not a single hit. Normal range. Could only be the fatigue which was somewhere around 10 but that´s not really a lot. Damn it...

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet
1 x B5N Kate bombing at 6000 feet

three carriers popped up 12 hexes North East of Brisbane! Hortlund really takes some risk, he could run either into all my carriers or into 100+ 4Es on naval attack. He told me that there´s ALL of KB!! I have spotted parts of KB around Thursday Island, Kaga (or was it Akagi) hit an MK10 mine at Truk not so long ago and with the intel the game gives us, we identified only 3 different CV squadrons in this attack so I´m pretty sure this is something like Shokaku, Zuikaku and perhaps a CVL. I haven´t looked up the CV squadron´s designations though.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 50,108

Japanese aircraft
D3A Val x 17

if I would have been lucky, my DDs would have moved one hex further and would be out of range. Oh well. 2 DDs sank immediately, 2 are undamaged and the other two will head to Rockhampton and have a 50-60% chance to make it. So, no biggy.

SS Narwhal, hits 1

Narwhal now sits in the hex with KB. I really don´t understand my opponent. He knows that I have 250 4Es (of which 150 have an exp of 80+) and that I have 96 P-38 (72 with exp 80+ that just have killed his Tojos in droves for nearly no losses on their own) and I could base 300 of those aircraft at Cooktown (level 6 af, lots of air support, 60.000 supplies, in range of air HQ) to set them all on nav attack 10.000 ft. If they would launch, my 96 P-38 would meet some 140 Zeroes on Cap (mostly around 80 exp) and I guess we would trade 1 Lightning for 2 Zeroes and then 95% of my bombers would attack the target. SO, if the target would be KB and not some ASW TF in the same hex I would guess that this attack would be devastating! Nevertheless, Hortlund keeps his carriers sitting 8 hexes off my base.

There are two reasons why I don´t set my armada on nav attack:

1. I would probably lose two months of replacements of Lightnings and I need them for my offensive against the enemy airfields in the near future.

2. It would be 100% sure that Hortlund wouldn´t be "happy" to see a couple of carriers sunk or heavily damaged by 200 attacking (very durable) 4Es on nav attack and surely he would cry foul and who knows if the game would go on.

So I made the decision NOT to fly in my bombers to attack KB. But still, it´s very strange IMO to park his carriers within LBA range, especially if you know that you CAN´T stop the attacking bombers - something he said a hundred times already in this campaign. So he deliberately ignores his own knowledge...

whereas the cut off and bombed for months units on Kiska are killing half a dozen aircraft every turn... the only reason I use my SBDs is that they gain exp, then they will be shipped to Australia where they then will act as anti ship platforms as soon as we have grabbed our first base on New Guinea or Timor. But with their short range, the main anti shipping platform will be my Mitchells, but they mostly still have to gain around 10 exp points to become real killers. If needed I will also use my high exp 4Es, but at the moment I´m planning on using them for airfield attacks above effective flak range.

today we had a second chance to attack the minelayer TF in this region. 8 hexes from Darwin, at least we have killed one of the big MLs, the other one could be in trouble also. Interesting again, we saw a couple of 2000lb GP bomb hits on Sarushima (combined with 500lb bomb hits) while Sokuten was hit by a single 500lb bomb. Hopefully Hortlund notes those 2000lb bomb hits too, as those bombs are also dangerous for his BBs (or am I wrong?? ). Don´t know the penetration value of those bombs in Nik mod but hopefully those can also penetrate the deck armor of the enemy BBs. But as he doesn´t care about parking whole KB 8 hexes from one of my major bases, he won´t care much about parking BBs in range of heavy bombers dropping 2000lb GP bombs either.

All shipping in range of my bombers from Darwin is in real danger now, especially merchants as those can be hit more easily. I have upgraded a lot of high exp RAAF Hudsons to Venuturas, those will also act as special trained anti ship squadrons. Range 13, bomb load 6x500 lb bombs for normal range and they have an exp of mostly 80+ just from flying recon and nav search the last couple of months.

Hortlund sends a big convoy South along the West Coast of New Guinea (so on the South coast in real life ) right into range of my 4Es. Again only 15% of my bombers launch and they achieve a hit rate of 16%. Those two small AKs are in trouble after 500lb bomb hits. If weather is fine tomorrow, we will have another chance to launch a bigger strike.

first we got messages of two big strikes failing to locate two TFs when finally this strike went in against an empty troop transport. Again this is North East of Darwin. Can someone answer me why Hortlund sends those TFs into this region when they could just go South on the other side of New Guinea? Well, I shouldn´t wonder...

Unfortunately for us, our Lightnings were bounced by the Tojos and we lost 5 A2A today, it would have been again better for us to send the bombers unescorted. 2 bombers were lost, we expect only one or two ships to sink as the bomb hits were spread out over the whole convoy. We spotted two more big TFs in this area but Darwin was clouded in the afternoon... the only base that was clouded in this part of the map...

Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 11

Allied aircraft
PV-1 Ventura x 4

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
PV-1 Ventura: 4 damaged

Japanese Ships
AK India Maru, Bomb hits 3, on fire

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x PV-1 Ventura bombing at 6000 feet

I´m sure Hortlun will get very upset when he sees my bombers going through his Cap, he surely insists that everything than 4 shot down bombers is complete BS! Those crews are around 90 exp and even after being damaged they put 3 500lb bombs into the big AK...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Amboina at 39,73

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 30

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 4

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 2 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 4 damaged

Japanese Ships
AK Nittatsu Maru, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 10000 feet

lots of small attacks by high experienced crews on the damaged ships that were split of their convoys today. I think this will make my opponent even more angry, 30 Tojos no B-17 shot down immediately. 3 bombs into the small AK - another one sunk...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 39,74

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 19

Allied aircraft
B-24D Liberator x 4

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
B-24D Liberator: 4 damaged

Japanese Ships
AP Shozan Maru, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 10000 feet

and a medium sized, already damaged AP is sunk! Again the bombers were going in against enemy fighters, none is shot down during the combat. At the end we lost 7 aircraft of those attacks today, so they´re not that immune... another 5 were lost on the rest of the map.

Perhaps my opponent will recognize at some point that it´s not that smart to send his TFs South on the wrong side of New Guinea, but I won´t tell him...

Sorry, if PJH is pi**ed off for being stupid its his problem (if really true)

He can´t play the "if my plans work i play, if not i drop"-game. If he cry because you "cheat" - okay. He can discuss such things or want "redo" the turn.
But if you play after the rules and kick some backyards of him - his guilt. Otherwise you can give up (not because you loose but because you win)

I hadn´t thought about him to be so victory-orientated (at last as japanese).

In your situation, i would do my best that he drop (cause if he drop he drop cause his gameplay was bad)

Does 300 heavies or even mediums operating from one base sound normal? Nope. But for him it is no problem playing the allies. So it sounds right for him at the reciving end. hehe

doubt that he ran in supply, my 48 search aircraft would have spotted something I guess. At the latest the TF would show up on the map when my bombers attack the base. The difference is that I have lowered the attack height to achieve at least a couple of losses within the defending base forces and to hit the supply depots (which seems to be nearly impossible). And I have brought in SBDs, which are hardcoded to attack at 2000 ft. In fact, dive bombers are near useless in Nikmod (well they are useful on the carriers, but not for base attacks) due to the immense increase of flak effects.

well, he didn´t say anything today while we exchanged turns, but I know what he thinks about the durability of Allied bombers so I´m sure he doesn´t like seeing my bombers going through his Cap. Of course he won´t have problems (and didn´t have in the past) if his bombers are going through my Cap!

I would only operate some 200 bombers from Cooktown, escorted by 100 Lightnings! Perhaps someone can explain me why he parks KB for a week one hex West of Thursday Island... I can´t explain it... but I won´t order an attack, due to the reasons I stated above. I want this game to go on, as I won´t start a new one before AE comes out and so it´s just like against the AI. If you recognize it´s not working as designed, do something to help it. In this case I think it´s almost certain that 150 Zeroes could not stop an attack from Cooktown against KB, so placing KB in harms way so long isn´t a smart decision, but I´m also sure that the game would end as soon as KB is hit hard.

*lurking mode off*

you could launch a small raid on KB, like 25-40 bombers, escorted by a ****load of fighters to kill off a bunch of his 80+ exp Zero pilots and then curse in an e-mail that more bombers should have launched but didn't, ought to scare him off

He could do this but the loss of so many P-38's may force the delay of other ideas, plus might there be the threat of land based cap reinforcing the CV CAP?

P.S. I am enjoying the AAR, thanks for the effort

not a bad idea, but I would lose too many P-38s and I only get 35 a month and those are the most important aircraft at the moment.

yes, exactly my thouhgts. Thursday Island has some 200 fighters now and KB parks next to it so there will surely be leaking Cap also. And if I want to launch an offensive anytime soon, then I need the "few" P-38s I have. Even the five I lost two days ago hurt because of the low replacement AND because I lost 4 high exp pilots that are replaced with total crap in the low 50s.

I´m glad someone reads and enjoys the AAR, thanks.

If KB is lurking off of Thursday Island, what are the chances he makes a run towards Darwin?? He may be waiting for something to happen there before making a move in that direction.

I would set your 4e bombers to a restricted range that launch if he moved past PM and back towards Rabaul. The lose of P-38s may be worth it if he acts a little bit irrational.
