Association note: I've just been informed that the trade deadline is July 25 (6 days away).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, July 19. 75 degrees at Ebbets Field, with the wind blowing IN from CF at 16 mph. It's Higbe vs Butcher.

2nd Inning. Kirby has already dodged a bullet.

Stewart lined out to left to end the half-inning.

5th Inning. The two pitchers are engaging in a classic battle. Higbe has 5 strikeouts so far. Butcher has 4.

6th Inning. The Dodgers get the first break. With 2 outs and runners at the corners, Camilli hits an RBI single. 1-0, Brooklyn.

Butcher is taken out for a pinch-hitter in the 7th. The Pirates fail to score. The new Buc pitcher is Bob Klinger (7-7, 4.42).

Top of the 8th. Billy Herman doubles, and Ripper Collins drives him in with a single. We're tied at 1. Fletcher walks, and KG goes to the mound. Higbe's done, and in comes Wittig. Lopez flies out, and the runners advance. Pinch-hitter Spud Davis singles to left, and the Pirates lead it 3-1.

Bottom of the 8th. Coscarart hits a leadoff double. Reiser executes the hit & run, and Coscarart advances to 3rd. Williams singles, and it's 3-2. Camilli walks. A collective "awwww" goes up as Musial then grounds into a DP.

Top of the 9th. Wittig holds.

Bottom of the 9th. Klinger is relieved by Bill Swift. Lew Riggs lines out to left. Babe Phelps hits for Mickey Owen. He smacks a single. Lavagetto pinch-hits for Wittig. Phelps is slow, so Cookie has gotta hit away. Can't trade a sac bunt attempt for an out. Doesn't matter. Lavagetto grounds out and reaches on the fielder's choice.

Pee Wee Reese singles to right, and Lavagetto races for 3rd. Runners at the corners, 2 outs.

As a last shot, Hank Edwards pinch-hits for Coscarart. He grounds out. Tough loss. Klinger wins, Wittig loses, and Swift earns a save.

The Pirates now lead the NL by 2 percentage points (.591 to .589).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, July 20. Dizzy Trout vs Johnny Lanning.

The Pirates strike quickly, and score 3 in the 1st inning.

3rd Inning. We start to play "small ball". Trout bunts, and Handley bobbles it. He reaches 1st on the error. Reese bunts him over to 2nd. Coscarart hits an RBI double. 3-1. Reiser doubles. 3-2. Williams walks. Camilli singles, and Reiser scores. 3-3. Musial is intentionally walked. Bases loaded, 1 out. Williams scores on the groundout by Riggs. 4-
3. Owens pops out.

4th Inning. Reiser hits a 2-run homer, and it's 6-3.

5th Inning. Elbie Fletcher hits a solo HR off of Trout. 6-4.

6-4 was the final. Dizzy got a CG win. Lanning lost it. The Dodgers regain a one game lead in the standings.

In the AL, the Tigers lead the Yankees by 1.5.

KG note: while our pitching staff has a 4.21 ERA, we do have six guys who can alternate as starters or relievers. This flexibility will be important as the campaign goes on. However, we're thin. Add Wittig, and in effect I'm operating with 7 reliable pitchers. To be honest, Bruner and Johnson should be in the minors. An injury would cripple us, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

As for the bench, it is deep. With the trade deadline approaching, I might have to part with one of those guys for some depth in the bullpen. I've been looking, but good pitching is scarce in the majors right now. The association ERA is 4.27. Come '42, I can see that pitching will probably dominate the amateur draft.

Right now, offense is dominant. For the average fan, an exciting game has lots of home runs. The league leader is Ted Williams, with 20. Nothing approaching Babe Ruth in his heyday, but many players have at least 10. The possibility of the long ball is getting distributed more widely. It's great for the fans, but for the managers, it's providing more chances for ulcers to develop.

The Pirates score first on a 1-out hit & run in the 2nd.

Bottom of the 2nd. Ted Williams leads off with a triple. Camilli grounds to 1st. Williams scores.

Pittsburgh, July 24. Trout vs Hamlin.

The pitchers prove nearly unhittable through the first 5 innings. Trout has 5 strikeouts, Hamlin has 4.

6th Inning. Reese reaches 1st on an error. Cox grounds out, and Pee Wee advances. Reiser singles, and Reese scores! It's 1-0.

Trout finishes with a 1-0 CG shutout. He strikes out 6, while giving up 5 hits and 1 walk.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
July 25. KG notes: The trade deadline will pass with the Dodgers standing pat. GM Larry MacPhail has been oddly quiet. In our conversations, he seems to be more interested in talking about the war in Europe, rather than baseball. By default, I'm taking on more of the GM role. What is Larry up to?

Today is an unusually cool 60 degrees, with the wind blowing out to RF at 10mph. Ken Heintzelman vs Rip Sewell.

The Dodgers start out strong, with a 2-run single by Musial in the 1st. The Pirates score 1 in the bottom of the 1st.

Heintzelman strikes out the side in the 2nd.

Camilli hits an RBI single in the 3rd. 3-1.

Reiser hits an RBI single in the 5th. 4-1.

The Bucs score two in the 6th. 4-3.

Bill Swift relieves Sewell in the 7th.

Casey relieves Heintzelman in the 8th.

The Bucs tie it in the bottom of the 9th. We go to extra innings.

Casey (5-11, 4.30) loses it 5-4 in the bottom of the 11th. Swift (4-1, 3.82) gets the win.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, July 27. Niggeling vs Butcher.

The Pirates take a 2-0 lead in the 2nd.

The Dodgers tie it in the 3rd.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
St. Louis, Wednesday July 30. Trout vs Warneke.

The Dodgers don't get a hit until the 6th, when Lavagetto smacks a 2-out single.

7th Inning. 1 out. Camilli singles. Musial singles. Phelps singles, and Camilli scores from 2nd. 1-0, Brooklyn. In the bottom of the 7th, Mize pinch-hits for Warneke.

KG notes: getting past the Pirates might be tough, but the Tigers are scary. They lead the majors in BA and ERA, and unless something unusual occurs, will leave the Yankees in the dust.

First things first -- it looks like I won't get my leadoff guy (Gustine) back until August 15. Pee Wee Reese is doing OK, but I intended him to be my number two batter. The heart of the order (Reiser, Williams, Camilli) is the best around. The catching platoon (great-hit, no-defense Phelps and so-so hit, good defense Owens) is working. At second and third, I have Coscarart, Riggs and Cox switching around like musical chairs.

The pitching staff, as I've mentioned before, is a mix of interchangeable parts. That description pretty much fits the whole team. I keep rotating the parts, and hope that the machine doesn't break down.

With all that, I have the leading HR hitter in the majors (Ted Williams, with 21), and the leading base stealer (Pete Reiser, with 42). The Dodgers also have the best and most loyal fan base. That's gonna count for something, further on down the road.

Chicago, August 1. Niggeling (12-8, 4.36) vs Charlie Root (5-4, 4.05).

1st Inning. Patience: Reese singles. Lavagetto bunts him to 2nd. Reiser walks. Finesse: Williams singles to right. Bases loaded. Power: Camilli homers. A grand slam! I can't believe what I just saw -- it played out perfectly. Musial follows with a triple. He gets thrown out on a sacfly attempt, but it was a great inning to witness. 4-0, Dodgers.

The Cubs shrug it off and score one in the bottom of the inning. 4-1.

2nd Inning. The machine is shifting into high gear. Coscarart hits an RBI single. 5-1. Williams hits another RBI single, and two runs score. 7-1.

3rd Inning. The Cubs commit an error. Musial reaches base. Owen singles. 8-1. The Cubs close to within 8-4 as Hank Leiber hits a 3-run HR in the bottom of the inning.

4th Inning. Russ Meers relieves Root. Meers gives up a solo HR to Ted Williams. 9-4. Meers walks in a run. 10-4. Reiser triples, and empties the bases. 13-4. Camilli singles. 14-4.

5th Inning. The Dodgers start inserting reserves.

6th Inning. Reese singles. 15-4. Lavagetto singles. 16-4. Meers is the sacrificial lamb. I try not to take advantage of it. It becomes embarrassingly easy -- 17, 18, 19. Finally, the Cubs' manager takes Meers out, and inserts Walt Lanfranconi. I was actually angry with the opposing team's manager by letting his pitcher get humiliated.

The Cubs score 4 runs in the 8th, including a second HR by Leiber. 19-8.

19-8 is the final. Niggeling (13-8, 4.54) gets the CG win. Root (5-5, 4.58) loses.

In Pittsburgh, the Giants beat the Pirates 5-1. To be sure, for once we are rooting for our crosstown rivals.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
August 2. Higbe (15-5, 2.75) vs Jake Mooty (5-3, 4.29).

We take a 1-0 lead in the 4th.

6th Inning. A 2-run triple by Reiser! 3-0. Williams singles, and Reiser scores. 4-0. Camilli doubles, and Williams scores. 5-0. Camilli scores on a grounder by Owen. 6-0.

Chicago scores a run in the 8th. 6-1.

Paul Erickson relieves Mooty in the 9th.

Higbe (16-5, 2.67) gets the CG win. He walks 4 and allows 4 hits, while striking out 8. Mooty (5-4, 4.49) takes the loss.

The Pirates shutout the Giants 3-0 at Forbes Field. The Dodgers hold a 1-game lead over the Bucs.

The Tigers lead the Yankees by 4 in the AL.

KG note: my pitching staff is now being called "The Lucky Seven". Yeah, let's hope. I guess that Casey is the wild card. I never know what to expect from him. 54 strikeouts, 55 walks in 150 2/3 innings.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, August 3. Trout (9-5, 3.81) vs Claude Passeau (6-7, 3.97).

The Cubbies take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st.

Williams responds with a bases-loaded RBI single in the 3rd. Passeau passes a walk, which results in a run. 2-1. Musial grounds out, and a runner scores. 3-1.

The Cubs close to 3-2 in the 5th, and tie it in the 6th.

In the 7th, Erckson relieves Passeau.

In the 8th, Hugh Casey comes to the mound.

Top of the 9th. The Cubs' new pitcher is 35-year-old Tot Pressnell. He walks Lavagetto. In trots Billy Cox to pinch run. Cox edges off the bag, and dashes to second. Stolen base! Reiser flies to left, and Cox races to third. Williams singles up the middle, and Billy scores! 4-3, Brooklyn.

Casey holds in the 9th, and gets the win. Pressnell loses. The Dodgers sweep the series.

In Pittsburgh, the Giants again top the Pirates. We now lead the Bucs by two.

We return home for a single game against the Giants. They are in seventh place, and are dangerous, as they wanna be spoilers. No team, despite their place in the standings, can be taken lightly.

August 4. Heintzelman (6-7, 3.97) vs Lohrman (5-9, 4.15). 80 degrees at Ebbets.

The Giants take a 1-0 lead in the 1st.

2nd Inning. Camilli evens it up with a solo HR to CF. Musial and Owen hit back to back doubles. 2-1. Owen makes his way to 3rd on a sac bunt by Coscarart, and Reese drives him in with a single. 3-1.

The Giants tie it in the 3rd. Their new manager, Leo Durocher, holds a personal grudge against me, and will stop at nothing to beat me. Actually, I think he wants to kick my ass. We'll see about that. That SOB is nothing more than a loudmouthed bench jockey. He starts ragging Heintzelman.

Sh*t! They take a 4-3 lead in the 4th. Leo gets bolder. He starts flinging the inevitable "You're bums! Go on back to Flatbush and make pizzas!"

5th Inning. On a 1-0 pitch, Heintzelman misses wide and flings one into the Giant dugout. It barely misses Durocher's head. Leo glares in my direction, but he keeps his mouth shut.

6th Inning. Freddie Fitzsimmons relieves Heintzelman.

8th Inning. Wittig now pitching. NY scores a run on him. 5-3.

Bottom of the 8th. 1 out. Reiser triples, and Williams brings him in on a sac fly. 5-4.

Bottom of the 9th. With 2 outs and a runner on 1st, Babe Phelps pinch hits for Wittig. He doubles, the runner scores and the game is tied!

10th Inning. Here comes Casey. This is the guy who's gonna win or lose for me.

11th Inning. Reiser commits a rare error, which allows a runner to reach base. Subesquently, the Giants go ahead 7-5. Reese errors. We end up giving up three more runs score. 10-5. That's the final.

Lohrman wins, and Casey loses. This was a particularly galling defeat, as we beat ourselves with the fielding errors.

The Pirates win, and gain a game on us.

We're off on Tuesday.

Monday, August 11. Niggeling (13-8, 4.44) vs Schumacher (13-11, 4.61). Reiser gets a day off, and Tommy Tatum plays CF.

KG Notes -- Evaluating the Dodgers: The position players are solid. The off-season focus will be on improving the pitching. I really have just two young reliable starters -- Higbe and Trout. Niggeling is having a good season, but is 38 years old. Heintzelman has been a disappointment. The bullpen is equally shaky, with two dependable relievers --Wittig and Casey. Beyond that, we have 40-year-old Fitzsimmons.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New York, Friday August 29. Back to the Polo Grounds for a weekend series. Niggeling vs Hubbell. 84 degrees, with the wind blowing OUT to LF@20mph. Look for some fireworks today.

Williams hits an RBI single in the top of the 1st. The Giants come back and take a 2-1 lead in the 3rd.

Casey relieves Niggeling in the 7th.

Rather than a slugfest, it turns into a pitching duel. Hubbell gets the CG win. Niggeling loses.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, August 30. A doubleheader.

Game 1. 86 degrees, wind blowing OUT to CF@10mph. Heintzelman vs Bill McGee.

Heintzelman gets into trouble in the bottom of the 1st, loading up the bases and giving up 3 runs.

Wittig relieves Heintzelman in the 7th. Sid Gordon adds an RBI single in the 8th. 4-0, Giants.

McGee pitches a CG shutout. Heintzelman loses.

Game 2. McGee pitches again? This can't be right.
