just finished a gaudalcanal scenario and was surprised when one of my S boats put a fish in Zuikaku which was extremely helpful left me with a carrier advantage throughout the game.

First time one of my subs has holed a cv played a grand campaign earlier in year and never got one.

does anyone have a story of a crucial hit like this.

Archerfish sinking Shinano? That was RL though. Are you looking for game stories?

I had plenty of "dud" torpedo hits on Japanese CV's early in the philipine campain (you REALLY hate your own faulty torpedo's then), I even had my own allied CV's torpedoed (NON DUD!!) by jap boats.

It is not common to get a CV torped (strong escort and aircover) but it is not extremely RARE either

In my PBEM a Dutch sub torpedoed the Taiyo. Didn't happen right away, she made it to Kendari, but she sank there after 10 days or so in port.

In the same game a British sub hit the Nisshin in the IO. Apparently she was badly damaged since she put in to Rangoon. There, my bombers finished her off with a few 500 lbers.

I've had a Dutch sub put a pair of fish into CVL Zuiho creating another navigational hazard in the DEI.

I had an s-bout (S-37 I think) put two fish in Akagi (I think it was Akagi).  She didn't sink but spent a long time in port.  Unfortunately it was 2/42 and with the KB in the DEI it didn't really impact my oppenents operations, that I could tell.

Same game Yorktown hit a mine laid by a sub at Noumea.  Put her in dry dock for 3 months.  That DID affect allied operations.

I had a dutch sub put a torp into Zuikaku during a sweep through the Java sea in january 1942.

Put her to 53 system in the end...

In my PBEM as the Allies, i've only had 3 success against CV's...1) I've had a Dutch Sub sink the CS Chitose w/ a magazine explosion in the opening weeks of the war, 2) a Dutch Minelayer hole the CV Akagi w/ a mine (causing her to miss an important CV battle), 3) an American sub barely dent the CV Soryu w/ a fish

My oppenant at similar successes as Japan.....1) putting a fish into the CV Essex, lightly damaging her, and 2) putting a couple fish into 2 CVL's, in the same turn, almost sinking them, but they survived.

In a UV game as the Japanese I had an undamaged CVL that was attacked three or four times in one day and was sunk by a total of four torpedoes. This is the only CV that I have seen sunk strickly by sub attack.

In a WITP game I got very lucky as the Japanese. After a carrier battle the Enterprise limped away (I did not have the aircraft or fuel to go after her). I guessed she was heading to the nearest friendly port. I sent a sub (it was returning from mine laying) to the port. It arrived the day before the Enterprise. My sub put one fish into the Enterprise and sank her. Believe it or not the same thing happened a few weeks later with the Hornet.

Both games were pbem.

In my current PBeM vs. FloydG the I-7 put a torpedo into the CL NASHVILLE, then 2 into the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE in the same turn. Unfortunately it seems he was able to escort the carrier back to a port. The I-7 was then sunk by a couple of angry US ASW Hunter Killer groups the next day.

I remember in a game long ago catching the  damaged Shokaku about a week after a big carrier battle as she slipped into Shortlands. Hit her with one torpedo and she went down right in front of the dock.

Damaging one big Japanese CV in 42 before the big carrier battle is a great force equalizer.

In all my PBM games I have not had a CV hit with a torp - except in the three games between me and denisonh. One of my subs has put a torp in one of his CVs in each game. Unfortunately I don't believe any of them sunk - which might be the reason he whupped me in all three games.

In one of my first UV pbem games, I was getting my hat handed to me by a very experienced Japanese opponent (it might have been Admiral Dadman).  He was maneuvering the KB through the straight between Gili Gili and the island to the east when a US sub put a torpedo into Soryu damaging her pretty severely.  That was about the only success I had in that game.

Tell me, was Imperial Japanese Headquarters happy with the sub commander when the US declared war on Japan four months before the planned Pearl Harbor attack?

in my game against dennishh(spelling lol sowee) which is on hold due to "The Great Computer Crisis" KB engaged all 3 of his carriers SW of Pearl, sinking 2 and heavily damaging 1, i forget which

couple days later, 1 of my Iboats put a fish or 2, not sure how many into 1 his sole surviving CV, she slid beneath the waves that same night

Lex was pretty much doomed anyway but it was satisfying to see her downed by an Iboat, and before she got to Pearl

In one PBEM, O-19 put a pair of fish into Chitose (as a CS). No, she's not a CV, but she grows up to be a CVL in 1943, so sinking her pre-emptively is nice.

I'm not sure if this counts, since it's not sub vs. CVs.  But in one of my PBEM games (a rare incarnation of me as IJN) my subs sank 3 crippled BBs on their way to San Francisco (Arizona within sight of land).  It cost me definately 3, probably 5 subs (final two close to sinking) .  But what amounted to an intially mediocre KB strike vs. PH (only 1 BB sunk), having the subs take out 3 more, was "rather satisfying" to say the least.

in a cpl of my AI games, a boat put a fish into Junyo, which apparently resulted in a critical hit and she sank, and another time a sub put a single fish into yamato, and down she went, i think it was a mag explosion

it is deffinitely satisfying to see a sub put a fish or too, let alone sink a cap ship, tho it is rare, and more so in PBEM, if the capship is properly escorted, and movements are unpredictable and frequent, which makes it even more satisfying

brings more fuel to my thinking that u should be able to set a target priority list for subs, tankers, destroyers, carriers battleships, etc

I sunk several subs with my carrier´s SBDs and Vals, so does this count in sub vs. CV? Never sunk a CV with a sub though...

So far in every game I played, at least one, often two Japanese CVLs are severely damaged by Allied subs while roaming the DEI during the first months of the game; usually a BB or two as well. Never sank one, though.

This F#@$ing ship is the bane of my existence as an allied player. No, it actually doesn't do that much harm, but it always shows up in the DEI at the beginning of the game and NEVER gets hit...EVER. My Martins will sink merchies all around it but can't seem to hit her.

Yeah, I was particularly happy about that.

In one PBEM I had Searaven put a torp or two into Hiyo during a raid into the Indian Ocean. Hiyo sank about a week later. Much later in the game another sub helped finish off Junyo, though she had been previously damaged by a surprise port attack.

In another PBEM RO-64 finished off Formidable after she was damaged during a carrier battle. I've also had several shots at CVs that either missed or were duds.

I've never lost a CV to a sub though. I generally lose my CVs to commander incompetence.
