Something like Battlelore ported to the computer would be pretty good. BTW many fans over at AGEOD really like the new Montjoie! boardgame port. Fairly abstracted, but quick and fun. Fantasy Wars was fun, but a bit repetitive and apparently has no random map feature!?

We are lacking that really good, fairly detailed medieval game. I want something with the dynastic features of Crusader Kings, the strategic map of Medieval 2:TW, the turned-based combat of Tin Soldiers or Fantasy Generals, with the economic/political strategy of Patrician 3 or Machiavelli. Is that too much to ask?

Seriously, where is my WitP for medieval?

13th century looks interesting, but I am afraid (since the publisher is 1C and the game has Russian connections) that the translation will be terrible or the game a bit wonky (think Parkan 2 or Space Rangers 2).

SoM

Though when I think Space Rangers 2 i think of one of the best games ever ;).
Russians if any know how to make good strategy games. They are getting more and more polished too, check out Fantasy Wars and the soon to be released Kings Bounty.

Take the original Castles (with the BBC video tour), mix in a Henry Vth timeline, maybe back to King Arthur, possibly a role-play element for that crowd, and you will have a winner.
The thing could have a "fantasy pack" for further development.
The thing could be developed on existing Matrix game engines.

I'd love a Medieval game, but please no fanstasy elements for me!  Why is it that only the medieval period seems to be such a target for including elves, magic, and etc?  I just hate these aspects in games not only because they take all of the reality out of them, but also because they usually just allow whoever is designing it to make the game world/story/characters too cliched and get away with it: "These are Elves.  They are Good. They are Good because they are Elves."  "These are nasty Orcs.  They are Bad.  They want to kill Elves and are Bad because Orcs are just like that." and so on- just think of any computer AD&D game and you can see why I dislike "fantasy" so much.

Oh, I'll agree there. It's just that the translation was SOOOO terrible for that game (seriously, the mission texts were so garbled that it left one wondering what the heck was going on). I am sure there will be a demo of XIIIth Century, and I'll be on that like... well... something on something it should be on.

Heh, blame it on Tolkien. Compare something like George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series to the Lord of the Rings and this is what you tend to get:

Song of Ice and Fire: Many different characters competing for a crown, all with flaws and redeeming characteristics, some more brutal than others, loads of intrigue, different motives for different characters behind their actions (no one is "evil" simply because they're some sort of fantasy-eqsue Satan Incarnate character), and a deep, involving storyline.

LOTR: We're the Good Guys! The Bad Guys are causing chaos because they're bad, so we better go out and stop them!

Maybe I just haven't read enough "fantasy" literature, but it mainly just seems like a big cop out mechanism to me

Mic82, Couldn't agree with you more. Tolkien was well thought of because it was detailed and one of the first major fantasy works. There is no comparason to Song of fire and ice. What a great series that is, just wish he would concentrate on the series and get it finished. I agree that there is a lot of dross in the fantasy genre even the so called classic fantasy series. Some of the new authors are well worth reading specially if you dont like the elves and orcs rubbish. Try Joe Abercromby and Scott Lynch, great books but no George RR Martin.
Back to the subject the Westeros world would be great for a game however George RR Martin doesnt want a computer game made, but one in a similar medieval/fantasy world would be great.

At least it will look authentic for the Russian side ;).

I remember a roleplaying group where they insisted on using Old English as standard
communication method to make it sound more "authentic". That basically filtered out us "stupid" from joining too.

I hope the strategic layer holds up.

Becides. I thought someone who lives in New York was used to crappy English ;).

But can you write ;).

Looking at release schedules for 2008 I wonder if the Russians aren't the
actual salvation to PC strategy gaming. They seem to be the only ones
releasing deeper games nowadays (in addition to Matrixgames and a few others).

I will in fact have myself a drink of Vodka to celebrate that :).

Btw. One way to remedy bad spelling would be if companies like Matrixgames
picked up a few potential Russian gems. The dedicated community here will make short work of any spelling mistakes ;).

Marcusm, where are you getting your info about releases for 2008, I hadn't even heard of XIII Century: Death or Glory until you mentioned it on the forum. I may be able to speak ye olde Englishe but it seems I am falling behind the times on pc releases.

Gamershell is a very good place for gaming news. Eurogamer/IGN/Wargamer/RPGVault etc are good for additional info.

As a bonus Gamershell has very fast download speeds for demos etc so I would keep that book marked.

I typically take the "rounds" during short breaks/lunch etc.

Shame really that Matrix haven't comented on a thread running to 2 pages requesting any info, one way or another, on a medieval game. same goes for the 2 page Vietnam thread.

Would that be "The Teutonic Knights" programmed by Helmuth von Moltke with chief designer Otto von Bismarck?

Yeah, I'm almost positive Blood and Iron is referring to a 19-20th century German Unification and WWI game (which would be cool too).

Nice comment Ironclad, I could just see Otto von Bismarck developing a game. It would be "Realspiel" and all of the design strategy would be to accomodate future expansions.

Actually, Bismarck designed wars much like games, so this isn't too far from the mark...

How about a remake of Kingmaker then? Superb boardgame so so adaption.
Well no, not a remake but a game resembling Kingmaker ;).

How about Medieval Kingdoms, that old SSI game?
Or maybe it was Medieaval Lords, forgot the exact name but it was
the best attempt until Lords of the Real arrived, then CK.

A game combining the best of those three would be a winner :).

I spent many an hour back-stabbing friends in Kingmaker. What a game!

I too cry out for a Medieval game!! Total War is great, but Matrix would certainly do it better.

Kingmaker was a great game in its time. There are too few medieval wargames. Notice in another thread Commander Napoleon at War to be released in July. May be a good game maybe not, but its another Napoleonic game. I feel like I've personally fought that era. Lets have variety, Matrix games in progress this year just dont seem to have that variety. I may be wrong and that we will be in for some surprises later in the year but ancient and medieval dont seem to be represented (Legion Arena Gold just doesn't count).

Yeah and Legion Gold was out a longgggggggggggggggg time ago even before Matrixgames picked it up so it don't count either as a NEW TITLE. Even HPS came out with something new in PUNIC WARS, but, of course that AI sucks the high noodles. We need KOIOS to make it or the Western Civilization group. ;)
