I'm not surprised he is still invading the privacy of this thread. I think he must be a kid or close to it. I'd delay posting in the AAR by about a week minimum, and keep strategy down to after the fact, unless of course you use his lack of character against him and post false info as to your intentions.

I also bet he bails as soon as something goes awry.

Com'on guys, that was an old screenshot by Roger...i think that after that they clarified the fact that this is a forbidden AAR...

It was an old one? Hmmm...well, he gets the benefit of the doubts (many) then!

well frankly guys I do not like the smell of this.

Is this an AAR or a 'kill the troll' party? Sure there is much to tell about some of his "on the edge" tactics, and maybe yes he started with some provocative posts but do we need to follow on?

I hope that the only things that will prevail in this game between Trollelite and Nemo are fun and respect.

I find the games he's in very interesting. His game plan is strange but interesting.

He's just the flavour de jour.

A couple months ago, it was Marky.

People are willing to play against him because only the player know he is not cheating.

If he was, his opponent wiil found the first second.

I'm playing against him now, and I update my plans almost every day, nothing wrong with it yet.

Again, please don't do it in this thread as someone did in General's thread.

To nemo, if you don't trust your opponent, better not to start the game.

Ok, the game has begun... I'll be posting a more general AAR as posting the combatreports turn by turn would just take too long. Unfortunately for some reason the first turn file didn't generate a combat report so I don't know how my strikes went. I do know that Vals and Kates are missing from KB so KB obviously flew against Pearl and I also know that torpedo bombers flew from Mini-KB and hit Palembang ( there are two CLs there I want to put out of commission ).

Overall something like 490 Allied planes have been destroyed ( over 50 of these being A2A kills ) with just over 100 Japanese planes joining them ( about 2/3rd of these were lost over PH ).

I've taken Jolo in the first rush and have also taken Johnston. G4Ms and Zeroes are making for Johnson ( to seal off the western escape route from PH ) while Kates and Vals make for Jolo to prevent escape for the US Navy in the Phillipines.  Total Allied losses for Day 1 comprise some 60 ships but include nothing bigger than a DD or SS.

My only major damage suffered is as follows:
1 x CVE took a bomb hit south of Singapore.
1 x CA took a mine hit off Pearl Harbour
1 x AP took some torpedoes on the way to balikpapan.

All in all very acceptable losses, the Allied sub fleet has been pretty much crippled and that'll help in the coming months. I'm not sure about the shape of their BBs though, I think they may be in much better shape but I can't be sure since I don't know what my Kates hit.

Well, what do you know? I've got mail from Trollelite after he saw the results of the first turn... Since he has asked me to make a post about it I'll quote the relevant section from his mail.

quote:

I expect you to post a message on your aar, to state our game has nothing to do with official scenario or CHS, as the strength ratio are totally different. This is a complete different scenario.

Trollelite has told me that while he was aware that the Japanese were greatly enhanced he was not aware the Allies were "weakened" (his words, not mine... As far as I am aware the Allies aren't weakened at all, they are at historical strength and as close to real as El Cid's research can make them... In fact they're strengthened a bit above the historical for Trollelite ). The issue he points out as evidence of their weakening is that the SBD replacement rate is only 33 per month.... Well, in my game vs jagdfluger it is only 22 per month... I made the Allies STRONGER than they are in my game vs jagdfluger in order to help the Allies out so if Trollelite thinks the Allies are weak in this game then he'd get the shock of his life if he took my place in my game vs jagdfluger.... and I think I'm not doing too badly in that game, 1/3rd of the IJN is already beneath the waves.

Anyways, as per his "instruction" I'm happy to agree with him that this game is based on RHS:EOS and NOT on CHS or stock. I believe I have been clear on that all along and anyone who has followed this mod's development OR ever chatted about playing a game with me would realise that I've never pretended that this is based on stock or anything. It should be borne in mind though that the Allies in this version of the mod are significantly strengthened above what I have to play with vs jagdfluger and the Japanese are weakened in terms of the forces they can field prior to July 1942 so Trollelite will face a more favourable force correlation than I've been facing vs jagdfluger.

I wish him luck but hope this isn't the beginning of a pattern.

So Nemo, i don't get the point here.
Is he refraining from going on? If not, i don't understand why he asked you to post this statement...i don't see what does this change if he's not "quitting"...

Interesting.

Compared to stock the allies are IMO weakened ealry on but thats not a Nemo mod issue its a CHS/RHS issue on which Nemo based his mod and is fairly well known.

Looking forward to this one I wish I could speaks Trolls home language so I could see the other side as well - but I dont.

Hoepner,

Who knows? I am working under the assumption that he's willing to continue and don't want to give a pretext for him quitting--- so I posted what he "instructed".

AndyMac,
Oh is he posting an AAR in his native language? I hadn't known he was doing any AAR at all. As far as the Allies being weaker... My understanding is that they are actually about as strong in my mod as they are in CHS, maybe even a little stronger now that I've upped the Allied fighter numbers in early 42 significantly.

I recall reading in one of troll's posts somewhere on how he was able to win 4 games (2 each of both sides) prior to the end of 1942. My theory is this is a defensive statement because of the changes in the scenario. In other words he wants us all to know that the deck is stacked against him to accomplish what he has done in the past in other games.

OSO, good interpretation.

I've asked him about a turn and he tells me he is busy and it'll be a few days yet. So, we'll wait and see. He has exams, I have post-grads and so there's no rush.

Nemo 121,

This is supposed to be a closed AAR.  So how would he find out if you failed to follow his "instruction" and thereby have an "excuse" to not proceed with the game?  He would of course not be peeping here, and any readers of this thread would surely not be aware of the "instruction" nor break netiquette by passing information from this thread to him.

I understand your concern but I cannot think of any of the reputable gentlemen who play WITP who would consider failure to publish his "instruction" as constituting a valid ground for not proceeding, particularly as I agree with you that the details of this challenge had been clearly postulated.

BTW, he may be busy, but that has not stopped him from playing in his other games.

Alfred

Alfred,

Ah well obviously since I know that he wouldn't peek and since he didn't cc anyone on his mail to me or, presumably, ask anyone to check I just told him I'd mailed what he asked of me. He seemed willing to take my word on it, fortunately

As regards reputable gentlemen, publishing instructions etc... Well, suffice it to say I want no stone left unturned in keeping this game going, from my side of things.

Yes, I've noticed that his other games are continuing. I'll give him a helpful email to remind him I'm around and available to do turns.

In the meantime I have the unmitigated slaughter that is my game vs jagdfluger to keep me going and interested. I lose another dozen or so ships today but I'm cheerful and unbowed. Slaughters are fun

troll is gone for exams for 1 whole week, leave three of us alone

but for one thing, I don't think play 3 PBEMs at one time would be a good idea.

I see Troll has returned to his other games even though his "week of exams" has not expired.  Must be the complexity involved in this game that explains it.

Alfred,

Yes, I've noticed that also. I've emailed him but haven't heard back so, tonight, I'll PM him. I'm sure he'll respond to me to tell me when he will be able to continue the game as keeping one's opponent informed of delay etc is mere common courtesy.

There was a delay with this as my damned computer crashed as I was just checking all of my 2nd day orders --- and they had taken me a couple of days of part-time work as it had been so long since the first turn I'd forgotten some of my convoy destinations .

In addition there was an "issue" when Trollelite informed me that unless the technical glitch which meant that there was no combatreport for the first turn was fixed then he would quit the game... this necessitated a little discussion between us as to the difference between unnecessary politeness and the normal level of respect which we could each expect our PBEM opponents to use when addressing us. After a few emails and the sorting out of the glitch ( a preference got toggled off on my computer somehow ) this issue was resolved and onward we move.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/08/41

Well the main news of the second day is that Boise went exactly where anticipated and my landings in the Phillipines and Malaysia are going exactly as predicted. In no time at all the enemy will have to make a choice between committing the majority of his forces to die in poor terrain outside of the Manilla and Singapore redoubts OR quickly ceding most of the important terrain in both countries to me in order to hold out for longer in the redoubt.

I'm also continuing my aerial assault behind the current front lines ( those Mavis are brilliant, their range is such a boon to Japan ) with the preparation for the paraborne capture of Tavoy and Andaman islands well advanced and the first parachute drop on Australia having taken place in order to isolate Derby --- and draw an over-reaction from Trollelite.

With the capture of Jolo and Naga yesterday and the basing of Kates, Vals and Jeans at each of these bases ( as well as a subsidiary base in Thailand in order to catch enemy shipping as it fled from Singapore toward India ) a large number of enemy ships were sunk today by single-engined strike aircraft.

I confidently expect most of the Level 4 airfields in Borneo etc to fall today and then my G3Ms can join the reign of terror. Combined with mini-KBs marauding path down the eastern coast of Java and I expect to have cleared the seas in the DEI/Phillipines etc of Allied shipping by week's end. This will, obviously, greatly help accelerate my conquest of the region.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Lanai [Hawaii] at 114,73

One of my fast transport TFs got hit by Allied surface marauders. It looks like he is going to stay and fight in Hawaii. Excellent, that was what I expected and I have laid my plans accordingly in terms of front-loadinhg my Hawaiian forces with aviation and engineer support and skimping on the actual combat troops committed to these invasion.

Many of these air attacks are peculiarly ineffective. That is because I have committed the 150 or so planes of my training units to combat. The end result of this is that many strikes achieve nothing BUT experience has climbed almost 10 points in 1 day in most units so by the end of the first week I'll have many more capable strike groups than I otherwise would have... and to be fair the G3Ms etc I'm going to base at Kendari and Amboina are going to catch anything that escapes anyway.

After striking Palembang and removing two UK CLs from the fight mini-KB moves south to catch the escapees from Batavia. Even if I do say so myself I paced it perfectly as my strikes all went in from a range of 5 hexes, maximising my torpedo strikes and minimising risk from fighters at Batavia.

I've asked him to turn this strike off repeatedly. If he fails to do so in future I'll just stop asking in, transfer fighters in, shoot all of these planes down and trust that non-verbal communication makes the point more effectively than my repeatedly asking him to stand these planes down has done. It is, however, disappointing, that they have flown again. I had hoped for better from him.

Day Time Surface Combat, near Tarakan [Borneo] at 34,60

Boise dies hard BUT she dies and that's the important thing. I had wanted to just put 2 BBs at Tarakan since I knew the DDs would be so vulnerable but I figured I needed a minimal DD outlay as an ASW screen. Fortunately while two were badly damaged they should survive so long as I capture Tarakan tomorrow and can dock them in the port ( another factor in my decision to commit DDs to this mission ).

By the end of Day 1 my combat-loading allows just shy of 1,000 AV to be ashore at Mersing. I think it is safe to say it will fall tomorrow. Now the enemy should begin to run for Singapore, abandoning most of the Malaysian peninsula to me at little cost. My goal in Malaysia is to stampede him into over-reacting by showing him a massive invasion which he must assume is being fully supported --- when in actuality after this shot is fired there is nothing else for Malaysia. If he doesn't stampede he actually has the AV to withstand my forces - IF he plays a very skillful and well-measured game. Nothing I have read about him so far or seen in his emails lead me to believe he is going to play a measured, analytical game.

As such he'll stampede and in the stampeding provide an object lesson.

Ouch, well like any good Soviet I won't reinforce success. This landing is being abandoned and a more succesful one being pursued. Alaska will not, in the end, be taken by coup de main over the winter.

In other news over 1500 AV are ashore in the Phillipines and will begin pushing towards Manilla from the north tomorrow. With other forces making for Manilla from the south Trollelite will have the choice of abandoning Clark to my forces and defending from Manilla OR fighting it out at Clark Field only to be forced to retreat to Bataan.

At Hawaii the USN has formed multiple one ship TFs with a view to minimising the effectiveness of my naval strike groups. This is quite gamey really in these circumstances BUT as one of my intentions is to show that strategically and operationally sound play beats any amount of loophole exploitation I haven't said a thing. I'll crush his navy, rebuild my strike groups and then crush his navy whenever it chooses to show its face.

Ps. Please feel free to ask any questions etc. After thinking about it I've come to the conclusion that even if my opponent were to peek:

a) That's his problem not mine. "Winning" has never been my concern anyway.

b) I've always believed that a well-crafted plan of which the enemy knows only the generalities can still be carried through to completion if operational command is sufficient to the task.

c) I write AARs to discuss strategic ideas etc and there's no point writing this AAR unless it is written openly and with freedom of discussion.

So, with that said, here's the plan for the war:

1. December : Manilla and Singapore.

1a. Late December - January 42: Java/Sumatra

2. February 1st 42 - Invasion of India supported by mini-KB. It'd be easier with full KB but it would also not be a challenge and therefore there's no point doing this.

3. 1st June 42 - Invasion of Australia

4. Late 42 - Invasion of continental American holdings.

16. Mars

17. Kuiper's Belt

18. Extra-solar travel

19. Time itself ---- although I may need to wait for reinforcement divisions before I can do this. I've been looking though and I just can't find ANY listing for QUANTUM Engineers in the database anywhere. I'd bitch about this to the mod's designer but, ummm, that's me. CRAP !!!

Plus I think if he does peek then this list will give him a heart attack --- a concept which amuses me.

Your invasion of time should help you with going back and taking care of Borneo and Burma, which you seem to have left out. Also, any plans for the Hawaiian Islands before you move on CONUSA?

I plan to conquer them on December 6th 1941 in the alternate timeline my Quantum Engineers create by marrying quantum foam with something equally nerdy and Star Trek-sounding. Hell, I may even do something horrible to planck and heisenberg while I'm at it

Borneo's pretty much already a done deal. Burma will fall once India falls as it will be isolated.

Nemo121,

I am very pleased to see that this match is proceeding.  I am however concerned that there was a need to discuss politeness.  Together with the latest "issue", I fear for the long term continuation of this match.  Remembering the initial issue (the requirement that you publish the weakness of the Allies) I see too readily the manufacturing of artificial grounds for your opponent to bail out.  Having said this may I make a few observations?

1.  I thought that in your HRs, notwithstanding you advising Troll to allow for Soviet activation, there was to be no Soviet activation.  If that still stands, how was it possible for Soviet aircraft to sortie?  If they continue to sortie, I think your plan to squash them is quite appropriate.

2.  I find it quite delicious to see that a paradrop of 8 men have captured Katherine and thereby unhinged the entire north coast of Australia defence.

3.  I suspect that your opponent is like those chess players who appear to be strong whilst they have the initiative and play very tactically, but are in reality very weak defensively and hopeless strategically.  It is much harder to play defensively as it requires carefull analysis of all viable possibilities, whereas having the initiative allows for a certain disregard of the opponent's plans.  As the great german chess grandmaster Tarrasch wrote the threat is stronger than the execution.

Alfred
