In Moscow, Defense Ministry spokesman Alexander Drobyshevsky refused to say how long the Venezuela deployment will last or say whether the planes carried any weapons.

The military said NATO fighters escorted the two Russian bombers on their way to Venezuela.

The apparently retaliatory move follows the U.S. deployment of warships to deliver aid to the former Soviet nation of Georgia, barely a month after Russian armor and aircraft crushed the Georgian military in a five-day war.

Earlier this week, Russia said it will send a naval squadron and long-range patrol planes to Venezuela in November for a joint military exercise in the Caribbean.

The deployment of planes will be certain to anger Washington. Relations between the U.S. and Russia have been badly strained by the short war last month between Russia and U.S.-allied Georgia.

Just caught up on my reading - those football results were great. I wonder if anyone took the bookies for some serious cash? The odds must have been very good.

The odds on Croatia to win 3-1 were 20:1, and the odds of England winning by that were about 50:1 IIRC. So the odds of 4:1 must have been 100:1 or so...

I didn't realize the Blenheims were used as night fighters.

They weren't good night fighters, but they did have room for the first A.I. sets. They were barely able to keep up with the Luftwaffe bombers as it was, but the addition of the electronics gear slowed them down even more. IIRC they did better than the Havocs and achieved about the same as the Defiants. They were quickly (sort of) replaced by Beaufighters as they came of the production line.

We do have some permanently "dry" counties here still....it's not because people don't drink there, but because they don't want the liquor companies bustin in on their moonshine business.
