In which WWII campaign did British and German paratroops parachute into the same drop zone within minutes of one another?

Is this a trick question? I didn't think the Germans used their Fallshirmjaeger(?) as paratroopers after the losses taken at Crete.

It can't have been in Norway, the Low Countries or France.

If not a trick question then I can only guess at some small scale operation in the Aegean Islands or somewhere else in the Eastern Mediterranean after the collapse of Italy.

In which case - and assuming my guesses were wrong - it's a very cunning question

Sicily is correct. On July 13, 1943, approx 1800 German Paratroopers from 1st Fallshirmjaeger (yes correct spelling) Division were dropped behind German lines along the Simeto river to reinforce a German Panzergruppe already dug-in there. Moments after the Germans landed, the Red Devils of the British Parachute Brigade were dropped into the same area.

Good question. Mind you I was very close - apart from it not being in the Aegean or Eastern Med and not being post Italy exiting the war......

Did you know that while dropping into Sicily one Allied paratrooper was asked by one of the parachuting German fallshirmjaeger "Have you seen my machine pistol?".

I hope that - with customary British politeness - said paratrooper did not feel obliged to hand it over.

"sorry old boy - here you are, I was wondering where that came from, you should take better care of it, you never know when you will need it next"

Brigadier G. W. Lathbury Commanded.
He was later at Arnhem, and was the officer injured while cut off with Urquhart.
Roy Urquhart then shot a German soldier being the only senior British officer to have directly killed an enemy in the war. Lathbury was left the Dutch. He escaped Arnhem later on.

Surely Italy was still in the war (as an axis power) during the Sicily campaign

In the account I read said paratrooper spun around and emptied his sten gun in the direction of the question.

If that was in response to my earlier comment, then yes it was. I was simply using some self deprecating humour as my "educated guess" was complete &@£?!&@

On reflection, perhaps a wiser course of action than my suggestion

Sorry Michel, my source mentioned the occurrence but not final outcome, other than most of the Germans did reach and reinforce the Panzergruppe. I don't know what happened to the Red Devils precisely, although based on one of the other posts, many must have survived to be dropped at Arnhem. AAMOF my source did not really say what their mission was. It seems the two moved off in different directions once they got organized.

Perhaps Extraneous knows as he is a superb web researcher.

I asume there must have been a successful outcome because the 1st Airborne was used to secure the port of Taranto in early September.

the simultaneous drop was a very intriguing mega-scenario for Squad Leader. never could put together all of the boards and counters for that one.

The best fun in playing SPIs Atlantic Wall was always resolving the scatter for the paradrops. The first few turns were great fun, but then it turned into WWI.

have never read who 'won' that ultimate paratroop battle....the 6th Paras were trying to take a bridge in advance of 8th Army I think. Obviously in the long run th 8th advanced on to Messina over time. but in the short term tactical sense, did the 6th take the bridge and link up with the rest of 8th Army? I've always assumed that this did work to plan. ???

Congratulations to the Green Bay Packers who just won this years Super Bowl.

During the world war two, before Super Bowl begun, American fotboll had the NFL Championships. What team won the NFL Championships most times during the years 1939-1945?

....and for those who know nothing about American football, some proper football :

Which team has held the English FA cup for the longest unbroken length of time?

(Yes there is a WWII element to the question).

Extraneous, interesting choice of guess

There are three things you should know about Arsenal FC

Firstly, I hate Arsenal, secondly I hate Arsenal and thirdly I hate Arsenal

..suffice to say even (as they frequently do) do things of note, I am sufficiently childish such that I would never recognise their achievements or give them any praise for doing so..

P.S You may just have gathered by now - no its not Arsenal

That response prompts me to make a guess....

I go with....

Tottennham Hotspur.

For no other reason than I do seem to recall that most (all?) Hotspur fans dislike Arsenal. Maybe dislike is to weak word for this purpose?

Edit: And because I know they have a glorious past but how and when eludes me.

When in doubt for sports trivia, always guess New York. Since there were no Jets until the AFL, I guess New York Giants.

Tee hee. Nice thinking although the wrong answer.

My response to Extraneous is because I support Tottenham Hotspur .

However, for the answer to the question here is another clue:

Think Royal Navy.
