Yes, it was Eva Angelina that I was talking about with the "slutty librarian" look. Eva Angelina plays lots of slutty "nerdy" types in those movies... uh... not that I... uh... know from experience. Just what I... hmm... was told.

No disrespect meant by the sexist comment. More just a view that, hardly anyone really tacitly discusses how "hot" the male politicians are in the context of their campaign. We use words like "experienced," "intelligent," "elite," or "charismatic." However, when Hillary and Palin stepped up, it was suddenly all about how they were dressed, how they do their hair, how they look, what their family life is like. Just seems to be a marked difference in language.

Although there was Obama Girl and "I've got a Crush on Obama". And that was pretty funny...

Well, that my friend is down to the female/gay/bisexual community. I am very much heterosexual, which is why I mentioned her.

So I cannot comment on what other people say about male politicians, I can only make my own observations

Besides, When you hear women talking about football (the proper football), all they go on about is how hot this or that player is. Do you really think (most) of the female community is bothered or even knows how good David Beckham is with a football???

David Beckham is good at football?

Re: the sexism comment - Ok ok, I was just ribbin' ya. Believe me, living here in the US, with the type of political coverage that we get, discussing Palin's looks tends to get a bit... hmm... overdone, shall I say. Right after the nomination it was all people talked about, and now she is on every magazine in the grocery store from tabloids to People. It's like the reincarnation of Princess Di over here (well, in coverage, not personality).

I agree, the Italian minister is very attractive. I also think Carla Bruni is pretty (Nicolas Sarkozy's wife), although I don't think she counts as a "woman in politics" as she is a first lady.

We should make this the Almighty Political Babes thread... although it may not last long, as most women (and men) in politics are 40+ years old and not particularly appealing people. So "babe" may not be the right word to use.

I know you were m8. And, if I were to think about it, yeah...being American it might become tiring hearing about Palin at all, let alone her looks.

Mind you...you can always put lipstick on a pig....

Palin looks all right, but her voice grates all too quickly.

On a side note, I'd vote for Michael Palin if he were eligible for the position.  Sarah Palin? Well, not likely.

So what, particularly, is offensive about them Sarge.

TBH, out of all the comments on this thread, you've highlighted the strangest of them to highlight lack of appropriate material.

First off, it's in good humour, something that seems to be lost on the world.

Second, if you were going to pick out things in a thread which aren't appropriate, then try and do a better job...god knows there's plenty of material here for you to choose from.

Sarge,

One can debate the approprietness of this topic altogether, but those quotes are out of context.  Take a look at the campaign buttons from each party, and one can see why this topic could be considered political on its own, and which party it advances.  If the topic is allowed, one should be able to post by saying, "Yeah, she's pretty, but that isn't enough for me," without going into details.

I'm not going to get into the politics of Sarah Palin, as this is not the place for it. On the other hand, I don't believe anyone would be swayed if I say I would rather vote for Michael Palin. Any Monty Python fan can appreciate that comment. There isn't anything off topic about noting that her voice would turn me off even if this was Love Connection rather than an election.  Anything that comes even close to "The Nanny" makes me wince.

For a good looking politician, I'd have to vote for Mara Carfanga.  She is a natural beauty, and her voice is sweet.  Of course, I cannot vote for her.

On a side note, my wife thinks Sarah Palin is manly square-jawed and borders on ugly.  I suspect that women and men don't see this quite the same way. One wonders how young men view her looks as comapred to how men in their 40's and 50's view them.

Ok that's a fair point. I assumed by inappropriate you meant it was offensive, either to yourself or others.

But there was not meant to be anything inappropriate...it's meant in that old stylee humour we, as a race, used to enjoy.

From my perspective there is nothing offensive in here...and it was not in anyway political, just in case your are sugegsting the comments are inappropriate due to the subject matter.

But, in the spirit of good forum relations, and understanding that all people are different, then I apologise for the material in this thread that I started which you deem inappropriate...it was not my intention to offend anyone and if I had thought that what I had written was inappropriate, then I wouldn't have wrote it.

Clearly it is to yourself, and possibly others, and for that I apologise.

So wait, Sarge, you found some things possibly offensive... so you went, put them in quote boxes, and then HIGHLIGHTED THEM!  Yeah, makes sense.

Some may have been off-color, I'll admit, but best not to repeat and draw out possibly off-color remarks. If they really offended you, you should report them as such.

Palin's accent may be slightly similar to then Minnesota accent, which is common to many Northern states (upper pennisula Michigan, Washington, Oregon). I think it must be a mixture of Canadian accent and rural American accent, and many of the people living in these areas are descended from people from the low countries, and Northern Germany. Lots of Swedes, so that may be where some of that comes from. If you have ever seen the movie Fargo, by the Cohen brothers, you will understand.

I have to come to Sarge's defense here.

While most of the others were merely tasteless, Krasny's comments were obviously political, merely thinly veiled and cross the line toward getting the thread locked.

Staying away from political or even politically leaning commentary and endeavoring to get back to the original, although somewhat tasteless theme, I personally, don't see her as hot. I guess it's just the square jaw that doesn't do it for me.

In Sweden we have Maria Wetterstrand. She is one of the two leaders of the green party. She used to be very hot, but have been slipping in attractivness lately*

*on a side note. In Sweden we have a "real" multipartysystem (no offence Yanks). There is currently seven parties in the parliament. This means that the Green Party actually has some influence on certain issues.

Hans

I'm sorry...but are you suggesting that the topic of a lady being "hot" is tasteless...is this so? If I've read that correctly, then my apologies, but lighten up.

If I have read you incorrectly, then I apologise.

FWIW, just in case anyone else wants to jump in and shout their distaste, firsat and foremost it was meant light hearted. Second, I make no apologies, whatsoever, for saying a female is hot or not.

As I suggested early in the thread, if I was suggesting she was picked because of aforementioned "hotness", then that is sexist. I do not, nor will I be persuaded to come to the conclusion that, simply pointing out someones impressive features is sexist.

Isn't it funny that if I had said "Or is Sarah Palin the most intelligent woman in politics?", none of the "sexist", "inappropriate", "tasteless" crap would've come up?

What have we done to the world.

Milly D'Abbraccio as the latest example I think.

If I may momentarily divert the topic somewhat, I think we should take up a collection for Matt Damon to buy a brain. He was quoted a few days ago as saying that he didn't like the choice of Palin as VP candidate because it had been made for "political reasons".

Uhm... Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuh...

I'm not sure but are not the green party people into the natural look. I.,E., no lipstick, rougue, creams, blush? After a while the natural physical beauty of a women lessens with age and needs a litttle help from the things I mentioned above. That is what may be happening to her Grymme. Father Time or Mother time in her case.

Fargo, although named after a North Dakota city, was filmed in Minnesota, and Minnesota was the setting.

The language and inflection used in Fargo was a caricature of how people speak in Minnesota. Almost no people who actually live here speak like that - just as people from the East Coast don't all sound like Fran Drescher. There are some areas with the German der slipping in, but the German and Scandinavian accents are mostly gone.

By the way, most Canadians don't sound like Bob and Doug Mckenzie either.

Interestingly enough, actress Isla Fisher was born in Oman to Scottish parents, has an Australian accent, but almost exclusively has played American roles with various American accents. She's a worldly lady. Maybe I'll write her in for senator.

Good point. On the subject of 'natural pretty' I agree with JD but I would point out that, in my experience anyway, most women who don't wear make-up outside of (early) dates or special occasions do it not for a 'look' or even ecological soundness but because they just can't be arsed. As I have a beard for much the same reason, that's a motive I thoroughly approve of!
