I have owned this one for a couple of weeks now and it is really fun. ESPECIALLY multiplayer. Multiplayer has really impressed me so far.

A bit late in responding, but yes, I got it, and I must say that I love it. It's far from perfect and there are some bugs and the AI could use some work on it, but overall this is the game that's so intuitive to play that you actually start thinking strategy. Invade Midway or simply raid it ? Hit Pearl again in January 42 or not ? Take the Aleutians to prevent the US from raiding the Home Islands or not ? Any game that gets me to start thinking about different options in the drive home from work is a) dangerous and b) a winner.

seriously, try multiplayer. Its far more intense trying to guess what another player is going to do............ Shoot me a PM if interested and I'll play you.

My timezone (GMT+1) + full-time job => pbem or nothing.

If there's one thing missing in this game it's not stuff like destroyers or subs, it's pbem. I'd pbem this game to death. And it could be possible by letting the AI decide on things like withdraw, air or surface combat, how much fighters to put in CAP etc by setting a level of aggresiveness per TF task. Would be realistic too as the level of command you play had no influence on the tactical handling beyond initial orders.

 Right now is around when I usually go to bed, so anytime in the previous 12 hours that you can play I can handle. Also, MP games can be saved and finished later,...in fact my last game took two sessions to complete.

It's now 15:42 when you live in GMT+1 ... see the problem ?

More in general : Pat Proctor, the developer of the ATF and AATF series, once posted some statistics on how many people actually play wargames in real time versus PBEM. Executive summary : as a developer putting real-time MP in a game is a waste of resources while PBEM is a must.

I agree, PBEM is the only way to go in almost all wargames, however there are some exceptions,....this being one. Yes, the game could be adapted for PBEM (I have to laugh here since I usually see this conversation in reverse, the game having PBEM and people wanting real time) and I dont really see any reason for it not to happen, in fact I think it should,...more options is always a good thing. However, for now you really must try MP. Against a human the real depth of this game shines through.

It was 3:42 pm where you are when you made that post and it was 8:42 am for me. So, if possible, one morning(your time) if you dont have to work (weekend or whenever) it should be around midnight for me, which is perfect for us to play.

Every casual wargamer should buy this and trust me it is easy to get into

I still remember the day I bought War In The Pacific by Matrix few years ago and until today I have yet to complete a turn

With War Plan Pacific , I am enjoying to the fullest , it has become one of the best purchase for me this year

It will be a nice entry for those who love Pacific War but are frighten by those complicating and complex rules

This game will do what Panzer General has done to the wargaming community

Thanks for the news I'll be getting the title at some point this year. I had planned to buy it upon release but I recieved War in the Pacific for Christmas. Whenever I'm playing something else I'm thinking about my next move in WITP. Different strokes for different folks but (in the spirit of the bowl games) War in the Pacific is the granddaddy of 'em all.


Thanks again Matrix for your sale, little did I know how incredible this game was.

I have played the demo but am unsure whether I will purchase it or not. I do have WITP but never could get my head around it. My knowledge of the Pacific is not very extensive so it is hard to tell what I should be doing. I also think that I am trying to do too much each turn.

Start small.......read some AAR's for insight........ask questions...............WITP is the most active and responsive forum around. It is a huge game, but once you really get the hang of things, a normal turn will take maybe, in PBEM, about 20-30 min.

1st turns and admin turns take longer.

600,000+ posts and counting in that forum, the largest of the Matrix forums by a huge margin. These guys are ****ing nuts, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. Just remarkable. (See post #46 above for more.) Hearts of Iron 2 is the only wargame I know of that even competes with this kind of following.

That being said, the game requires dedication, plain and simple. You better be pretty interested in the Pacific war, or else you will lose steam fast. Something like WPP or SC2: Pacific may be more appropriate if you are not as committed to the setting. Too bad their representation of the hardware (ships and planes) is pretty abstract.

Continuing the train of thought: It would be nice to have the simpler game rules, but with less abstract hardware. I guess that means I want something more tactical, but I know of no tactical sea / air Pacific game, except perhaps Carriers at War (which I need to play sometime).

Don't mistake number of posts for dedication necessarily. There are at least two threads that are absolutely pointless except for post padding. Not that HOI2 people would ever do that.

I´d say that the "Small Ship, Big War" thread alone is quite a big argument in favor of the game and its community. Any game that can engender that kind of activity in its players cannot be all that bad - and any kind of community that contains people capable of this cannot be all that bad either. The thread is more fan fiction than AAR, but it is probably the best fan fiction I have ever read.
