Unfortunately one of the last couple of patches has sub mine laying somewhat broken. Earlier it was like with night surface raids or bombardments, the TF moves in at night and places the mines and moves out again. Now it is that the sub moves in and stays there during the day. I-123 was attacked by a Coronade during the day (but missed) and now by the ASW TF...

Guess there were still Hudsons on nav attack and not all on nav search, otherwise the base would have been empty. Still pretty tough flak fire over the base which is quite amazing to me as this base has not got any supplies in the last 5 months. We destroy 5 Hudsons on the ground for two of our bombers lost. I guess Miller will soon move his bombers out as he doesn´t like those losses. At least I hope so, I don´t want to keep this base closed as there is a bgd and four eng units there and they probably haves some 100 eng to repair damage and constantly bombing it would just cause attrition to my bomber daitais.

god damn, what a timing! Normally we have some 50 fighters on Cap over Lautern (out of 100 stationed there, seems not possible to see more than 50-60% in the air as the Japanese) but today we have ordered a strike out of the base. We only left a chutai of Oscars at the base because it was moved in yesterday and had high fatigue. This chutai loses 3 Oscars and 2!!! pilots - once again I´m curious how other people can see only 1/3 of the pilots lost A2A over own territory and nearly no losses of pilots on the ground when I´m constantly taking high losses of pilots due to aircraft destroyed on the ground, not to even talk about my pilot losses A2A over own territory. Well, must be my special WITP edition I guess...

Would have liked to see my fighters over the base to meet the incoming strike, I would estimate the losses to the enemy being something like 15 fighters and 15 bombers A2A and another 5-10 bombers lost to flak and ops. Well, perhaps it´s better for me that way as I would have surely lost 20 fighters on the ground, if not even more... I was somewhat disappointed about my flak fire, there´s a big base force and a special base force at the base, a lot of flak guns but flak fire really was pathetic. Even if the enemy goes in at 5000 ft, there´s no flak gap in Nikmod IIRC.

It seems Miller is serious about fighting in this area and at the moment he has more material here than me. Will take some time to build up Timor into a fortress but Lautern is a level 4 airfield already and I can stage bombers there to bomb Darwin but recon tells me about 17!!! units at Darwin, so I guess there´s a lot of flak. But there are also over 100 aircraft at the level 5 airfield so Miller will soon see my bombers darkening the sky over Darwin...

this is the reason why we had no Cap over Lautern! We ordered a big sweep to Darwin as we have spotted a dozen Warhawks on Cap yesterday, luckily today there were even more and also Australian Hurricanes joined the party. The A2A losses are totally exagerated, 27:1 is pretty much off in this case. Exp levels of the defenders must have been awful while my daitais are in the high 70 - low 80s, veterans of the fights over the Philipines and Malaya. Still, 27:1 is too much...




The total losses of Allied figthers is worrying me a bit! They are not high enough as Miller is too smart to take on the figth if he isn´t really forced to. I wonder if he will keep fighting over Darwin, I would say he won´t. With only 87 Warhawks lost in 5 months this means he has now 120+ more than at the start as he gets 40 of them per month. The Warhawk is the top notch fighter of the Allied at the moment, even if it performed awfully over Darwin today. Second most important fighter(bomber) is the Hurricane which equips most of the British and Australian fighter squadrons. There should be also more than enough Hurricanes in the pool for Miller. We´re in May now, I guess the first Spitfires also should show up soon in low numbers.

this is the hex South East of Sian, there are 5 Chinese units sitting. I have a huge Army set to march from Homan into this hex and they will arrive tomorrow. Some 5000 assault points are prepping for Sian, which is my next target. When I kick this stack of 5 Chinese units back to Sian, I expect to meet there some 2000 assault points max with level 9 forts of course. Probably not with a lot of supplies but who knows, the North of China is producing a nice amount of supplies each turn. Seeing Miller taking position out of Sian with half of his Army in this area is good news, this will wreck the units outside of Sian and will cost him some 5000 supplies as those units will lose all of their supply if they have to retreat. I guess Sian will be an easier nut to crack than Changsha, Hengchow and the other base in the South.

Miller wondered where all my divisions went to after figuring out that they didn´t march on Kweiyang where I have an Army with some 2500 assault points. He even asked if I will throw them into an offensive against India. As those troops show up near Sian I wonder if this is somewhat a surprise for him. The long march on the rail from the South to Homan took long enough to see my divisions getting nearly to full combat strenght with nearly no disabled squads. A state in which those troops never have been since 12/7/41...

while we attack Drum South East of Singapore. Sub was spotted yesterday probably moving to India and we sent out two DD ASW TFs. One right into the path of the sub. Couple of DDs attacked, using up 18% of their DCs while scoring 6 near misses... The two ASW TFs will try to hunt down the sub the next couple of days... we also have a Sally sentai on nav search at Singapore, but IIRC I haven´t had more than two or three hits on subs by medium bombers since the outbreak of the war... not much, but I don´t want to use this tactic of massing hundreds of IJA bombers for ASW duty in the SRA. This way it´s for me a better game and somewhat more realistic.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

here comes the deliberate attack at the outskirts of Sian! Our fully supplied and combat ready divisions have no problem breaking through the front of those four Chinese corps and the Chinese are forced to retreat to Sian. 4000 assault points will now move to siege the town. 1000 assault points will move back to Homan to act as a reserve, so I can rotate units in an out when the attacks on Sian begin to roll. I hope to take the town after four or five deliberate attacks - if Miller decides to hold, I can´t see much of an option though as the bases further North surely haven´t all level 9 forts and if they would, he couldn´t defend them I guess... we will see...

what´s a real surprise for me is the fact that he didn´t move a lot of his troops out of Chungking to bolster the defense in the North, he must know that even 1000 assault points there would be enough to hold the town against my 2000 besieging the city (with no intention to attack anyway). The units which he lost due to surrender must have partially come back already, those understrenght units would be sufficient to hold the position at Chungking, he could move at least 2.000-3.000 assault points North to meet my offensive there. Fortunately for me, Miller is no fan of a moving ground war, but preferes to just hold position. This way I can move in, attack and rotate my troops at will, without acting against a counter attack or an offensive in other parts of China. I do have enough force behind high fort levels at every front in China to withstand a more or less limited Allied offensive anyway. IMO it´s too late for the Chinese now, supply must be critical, South and Central China are blocked due to my blocking positions at Kweiyang and Chungking, so the only place left would be an offensive out of Yenen, but there are only some 40.000 enemy troops that won´t achieve anything.

firts time that my troop at the Myitkyina front received supplies... what is interesting is the fact that the enemy seems to lose troops every turn, I wonder if they are starving here. WE HAVE BEEN SPOTTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!




We have been flying recon with Emilies over India the last two turns and I guess this alerted Miller, which wouldn´t be surprising. Today, our invasion TF(s) were spotted. Miller´s patrols identified two TFs, KB wasn´t spotted but I´m sure Miller is aware that KB must be around also.

We are half a year into the war and the Japanese forces have yet to take a major defeat (we are ignoring the loss of Midway! ), while the Allied, especially the US Navy, took serious losses in their last offensive attempts, losing two American fleet carriers with another one heavily damaged. With our ships and ground troops fully combat ready, there was no doubt that we would field another major operation. Well, compared to the conquest of the SRA and major parts of the Pacific this is a real major operation as it involves nearly all the IJN combat ships, nearly all available troop transports and hundreds of thousands troops. The fact that Nikmod has a greatly reduced cargo capacity of merchants this makes it harder but also more interesting.

In fact, we had two options: attacking Northern Australia (easier option but not war deciding) and attacking India. Initially I was planning to attack Northern Australia as this is a more or less easy conquest but then we spotted a UK division at Myitkina with several other units brought in from India as well as an Indian division at Akyab. This made me really think about invading the sub continent and we ordered our staff to plan for an invasion. And then, out of a sudden, British CVs and BBs show up in the South East Pacific supporting the failed American attempt to retake Canton Island! This was the time when I ordered all available forces to prepare for an attack on India within the next couple of weeks.

Heck, what is Miller thinking when he sends his troops to Burma and nearly the whole Royal Navy into the Pacific? This just asks for an invasion! Of course this doesn´t mean that we will have success, but the chances for us couldn´t be better I guess. I have invaded India twice in PBEM, both times in mid to late 42 and I both times succeeded. One game was stock, the other one an earlier Nikmod version where it was harder to do. From the experience so far (and from Miller´s emails) I know that he´s not the best commander for ground combat, so we will see how this operation will go. I expect a lot of action the next couple of weeks an I guess the first four weeks will be the most important. If we are succesful the first weeks then it´s surely doable to conquer the subcontinent.

Miller won´t have much of a problem to figure out that this operation includes most of the IJN, but without the full strenght of the American carriers, I´m pretty confident that he won´t try another offensive against my positions in the Pacific anytime soon as this is the place where my Betties and Nells are.

KB and it´s supporting TFs ended up six hexes off Madras yesterday and I formed a bombardment TF out of KB´s heavy cruisers and a full 6 DD ASW TF to attack the enemy´s airfields at Madras. No nuke but we did some damage to the grounded enemy aircraft just waiting to attack our ships with the first light in the morning. As you could see in the last screenshot, we won´t be landing somewhere around Calcutta, but in the Madras area. There was the option to land directly at Madras (would be a bad choice as it´s an urban hex and there are some 10.000 troops spotted), or at Trimcomale (South West of Madras) which is too close to the airfields on Ceylon, or at Yanam, the little base East of Madras. We decided to land at Yanam! It´s empty and we have ordered a para regiment to take the base tomorrow to enable us to land our troops unopposed. This means that Madras´ airfields will be our major threat, it´s four hexes away from Yanam. We have to take out Madras´ airfields (level 4) at all cost, followed by the airfields at Hyderabad North of Madras, which are only level 3 at the moment. I guess there aren´t a lot of air support troops either. Yanam is a port 0 airfield 1 base, so unloading there will take an eternity, but it´s still better than to land directly into the guns of a dug in enemy at Madras I guess.

Strike from KB´s carriers with only 5 Zeroes as escorts! This pretty much scared me as I´ve set my fighters to 80% Cap to have an escort against the expected Cap over Madras. Well, Miller obviously ordered all his fighters to conduct offensive operations and this saved a lot of Kates! Still, I lose half a dozen Kates from this attack but we also destroy a good number of aircraft on the ground and even more important, together with the night naval bombardment we scored nearly 150 hits on the runways and 30 and the airbase. I hope that this is sufficient to stop any offensive ops coming from that base tomorrow.

Due to our leaking Cap from KB into the hex with our invasion TFs we only have a "small" Cap over our carriers which have to face the enemy´s main strike. Our fighters tangle with the enemy escorts taking them out easily, most of the AVG broke off the attack leaving the bombers alone. Unfortunately we see 18 out of 21 bombers breaking through our Cap diving down to release their bomb loads over our carriers and battleships. I have all four Kongos and BB Yamato in this TF to act as targets and bomb magnets for the enemy aircraft. It worked pretty good as only 8 of the attacking bombers actully attacked my carriers. Unfortunately one of the Wellingtons managed to put a 500lb GP bomb into CV Shokaku causing damage. Thank god there was no follow up explosion, the ship ends the turn with 16 sys, 9 flt and 13 fire. I guess this will increase sys damage to 25-30 in the end and I still have the ship with KB, will decide tomorrow if the damage is too much to keep the carrier with the other flat tops.

Also here, I think Nikmod worked perfectly! In stock, my fighters would have wiped out everything.




at the end of the turn we have spotted 7 enemy subs in this area, which seem to be the major threat besides the air attacks. I don´t expect the remaining Royal Navy ships to show up near the invasion area as long as KB is around. Wonder what´s left of the RN in India anyway...

Miller tries again and again his troops get chopped to pieces attacking my dug in troops in the woods. 200.000+ troops attacking must have used up A LOT of supplies which has to be low in China anyway and the Chinese units took a lot of losses. Guess this attack has really strenghten my position here and I can concentrate on my offensive in the North. If something goes wrong in the South (which I doubt) I still have three divisions sitting at Canton which I could order to march to a fall back position for my troops at Kweiyang.

The conquest of Australia seems to be more difficult than India lately. Many Japanese players seem to regret not being more aggressive against India and see them coming down to Malaya with their Chinese friends later in the game.

Status: offline 		Here are the air losses of the first day of the invasion. We took out a good number of enemy aircraft, the most important are the Beaufort I and the Wellingtons. Unfortunately for us, the preparation of the invasion took longer than expected, I would have loved to attack before May as this is the date when the Royal airforce can upgrade their aircrafts. This means I´m now facing Wellingtons instead of Blenheims and probably Hurricanes instead of Buffalos. As it stands now, I see the Wellingtons as the biggest threat for my invasion as those damned bombers carry 9x500 lb GP bombs, have a decent range of 9 hexes and are far too durable to be taken out by my fragile carrier based fighters. I can only hope that there aren´t too much of them already combat ready and that morale soon becomes a problem for the enemy bombers. Taking them down is impossible, we can only hope to drive them back.

As far as I can see he has some 700-800 assault points brought from India to Burma which seems not that much but it can be decisively weakening his positions there. The biggest problem for the Allied player at the beginning of an invasion (for the Japanese player too of course when he faces an invasion) is the fact that he has dispersed his troops over a large area, while the invader comes with strenght focussed on one place. I guess I will be able to seize the area around Madras up to Hyderabad BEFORE the enemy will be able to march major troop concentrations into this area. I am using hundreds of ships for my troops but will have to make a second trip with all my ships to actuall bring in all my troops that are tasked with the conquest of India. If Miller decides to completely strip the area around Calcutta to march all his troops to defend the West and North of India, I could of course also land my remaining troops somewhere in the Diamond Harbour area.

Miller didn´t move any Chinese units to India I guess, he moved half a dozen corps and tanks from China to Myitkyina though, that´s why I also moved four inf divisions out of China into Burma to counter those Chinese units with Japanese China command units. If I would have to guess, I would say Miller ordered his 50.000 troops at Myitkyina to march back to India today but this will take them at least 6-8 weeks on the trails. And what you might not forget, I could order my troops at Myitkyina to march North also as soon as the enemy units left the hex.

The total conquest of Australia is a mess, I have never tried it. In Nikmod I would say it´s near to impossible, and there´s also no real sense to do it anyway. What makes sense is the conquest of Northern Australia and that´s more or less easily doable, this makes the Southern SRA save from an Allied counterattack out of Australia for at least one more year IMO. Of course, attacking India AND Northern Australia isn´t possible. I won´t forget about the area around Timor though and if Miller will decide to attack out of Northern Australia (which he probably won´t within the next 6-10 months) then I will be ready to cause some damage. By that time, the conquest of India will have either been a failure or a success and I guess I won´t need KB in the area longer than 6 weeks anyway.

The Chinese won´t be an issue at all in this PBEM as China already has lost the war. Even though theoretically they still own most of China (except the South), all of their positions in the North will be lost soon and then China is reduced to the bases around Chungking and Kweiyang, which shouldn´t be producing enough supplies to mount any offensive operations. I wonder if those bases even produce enough supplies to keep the Chinese troops from starving. I have no intentions to take out all of China though and will keep a lot of troops blocking the enemy at Kweiyang and Chungking and will have all my garrisson requirments met in the already conquered territory.

As I don´t like those attempts to exploit the game engine with dozens or even more mini TFs to see totally weird air attacks I tried to use as few TFs for my troops as was possible. The three TFs with troops consist of 90-100 ships each with the supply TF as a separate TF. Got two strong surface combat TFs and the medium sized (in number of carrier based ac) CV TF as cover and an ASW TF to hunt the Allied sub force that will start their attacks soon.

In the hex with KB I have three TFs at the moment, KB, a surface combat TF and an ASW TF. Tomorrow there will be four TFs in KB´s hex as I will include the CAs from the bombardment again in the KB TF and will form another ASW TF.

Even with trying to use as big troop transport TFs as possible, I still have 12 TFs operating in the area which causes to a lot of dispersed air strikes but at least I´m trying to keep the number of troop transport TFs as low as possible. As you can see I´m bringing in over 250.000 troops!

If I don´t want to take losses and want to see the air attack routine go completely crazy, I could of course have created 80x5 ship TFs out of my 400 troop and supply ships also...

Status: offline 		one major issue to see a succesfull operation will also be the question how much supply we will seize from fallen enemy bases. As you can see, I´m bringing in only some 70.000+ supplies with our first wave and bringing the same amount or even more will become problematic as a) I´m not swimming in supplies and b) my small AKs can only carry 1750 tons in Nikmod which is only half of the capacity of stock. At the moment I have ALL my APs ferrying troops around on the map and most of my TKs and AKs ferrying fuel, oil and ressources.

Everything will become far easier as soon as I have seized Madras, it´s pretty much comparable to the situation the Allied had in the Normandy in the real war. Madras is my Cherbourg.

EVERY TK rgt the Japanese have is in the first wave! I used pps to get all restricted command TK rgts out to be used in India.

Miller moved out all of his aircraft and we hit an empty airfield. The field is 100% inoperational now, that´s for sure, the major threat are the airfields on Ceylon now but those are far away and bombers can only attack unescorted I guess... we have only spotted one Allied strike today but it missed it´s target so our ships weren´t attacked today... Excellent, every day without an attack is a good day. IMO Miller has to throw the kitchen sink against my invasion NOW, every day that passes is a lost day for him...

and Truant gets another near miss, isn´t burning anymore... our search aircraft have spotted no less than 14 !!!! enemy subs in the invasion area. I see them as the major threat at the moment. Therefore I have increased the search rate of my carrier based bombers to 20%. I don´t fear any Royal Navy ship showing up so I could even set my bombers to 50%+ nav search but I don´t like the "vaccuum cleaner anti sub tactic"...

SS Haddock was hit by a Val today... with Truant damaged also, I hope to see "only" a dozen subs left tomorrow... CV Shokaku´s damage is increasing, that´s very bad news. The carrier is now at sys 33, flt 14 and fire 10!!! I have ordered the carrier to head at flank speed to the next major port, escorted by 6 of my DDs... Pretty bad damage from one bomb hit, the carrier will be out of the war for 4-6 months I guess. Hopefully the Allied subs don´t get a shot at my carrier!

Here comes our first deliberate attack at Sian! Forts were only at level 8 which is rather surprising but that doesn´t make much difference. We don´t take a lot of casualties, we have three units rotating out going back to Homan, fresh units are already moving in. Two of my eng units that were in the lead are totally wrecked. I expect Sian to fall soon. Amazing, Miller has four units at Kuchang, the base North of Sian and I don´t understand why he didn´t move them in to defend Sian.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Yanam base !!!

I´ve really feared that weather could prevent my long range transports (Tinas) at Rangoon from flying my para rgt to Yanam or even worse, that Miller would have used his Dakotas to fly a couple dozen of inf squads in to Yanam as he could have thought about my paradrop. This would have forced me to unload a division on a hostile beach, causing at least 15-20% disabled troops and another delay. This way, everything works fine, the invasion TFs will arrive tomorrow night and will start unloading over the beaches, as Yanam is a level 0 port. We have spotted an Allied unit marching out of Madras heading East already. No troop movement in the Calcutta area spotted so far.

What´s this? Miller is targetting my airfield? The level 1 airfield that isn´t a threat at all? Why not attacking my ships? The incoming escorts were shot down, the Beauforts turned back (why using those torp carrying Beauforts for a hopeless attack on this airfield?) but the Wellingtons once again pressed their attack through just to achieve a single hit on the airbase. This attack came from Hyderabad, 4 hexes North West of Yanam, it´s a level 3 airfield which means it´s to small for Wellingtons anyway. No idea what this attack should have achieved. Better would be to station 150 Hurricanes there and set half of them to nav attack, the rest to escort. Even if this would mean the loss of some 30-40 Hurricanes in one day, I would not like to see 50 going in for a bombing run at 2000ft... but I guess there isn´t too much airsupport at Hyderabad, probably only a single base force with 30 air support squads.

What is also interesting is the fact that Miller moved in A LOT of aircraft to Madras again. We spotted the dark airfield symbol there again today, yesterday there wasn´t a single aircraft there. Doesn´t he know that he can´t fly his aircraft out of a 100% damaged airfield? We have scored some 250+ hits on the runways and 40 on the airbase during the first two days of the invasion so why is he flying in aircraft again? Amazingly enough that N O N E were lost to ops while landing at a 100% damaged runway... not a single attempt was made to attack my ships out of Ceylon, the dark airfield symbol of Colombo turned into a light one today. It would really amaze me to see Miller doing no more attacks on my shipping.

My ships at Yanam unload at the expected awful slow speed, I guess it will take me 4-7 days to completely unload, then all my ships will head home under carrier cover again to pick up the second wave. CV Shokaku is two days away from a major port and it looks like she will make it. We´ve spotted a sub 300 miles South West of the carrier though...

unbelievable, the air search routine is still totally borked in WITP IMO. As mentioned last turn, due to 17 enemy subs being spotted in the invasion area I have increased the nav search (no, not ASW search) of both my Kates and Vals to 20%. The day before we only had the Vals on 10%. The result is... what can I say? I have immediately decreased the search to 10% on both bomber types again. I have also asked Miller if we should create a house rule about nav search for carrier based ac. This way it´s just totally off...

O24 is the only sub that sunk outright though. But with this routine as it is now, I could sweep the area within 4 days and non of the subs would alive anymore...

what´s very interesting is the fact that nearly all Allied SS in the invasion area seem to be heading back to Ceylon. Can understand that the damaged ones are going back, but as I´ve told Miller that I have set my bombers back to 10% nav search, I´m amazed that he´s now pulling his ss out of the area.

Miller told me that he has already written off India as I am aware of his strenght in ground warfare. Well, I´ve told him that it´s not the time to already write something off, I´ve just landed at the first base. China was his first lesson, now it´s already time for his exam!

so far everything is really going great. The hit on Shokaku is a mess but as she´ll make it it´s not a problem as there are enough carriers to take her place in KB for the next couple of months. As spotted yesterday, Madras is full of aircraft and just like yesterday, I guess airfield damage prevented the Allied aircraft from flying. KB launches another strike (I have to keep an eye on the max sorties) and we torch a lot of Allied aircraft on the ground today... Hyderabad´s airfields were empty today...

I still can´t believe that Miller isn´t throwing in everything he has...

what would I give to see my bombers being dispersed on more than one ground unit... that way, ground attack makes no sense at all... can someone explain why Allied bomber squadrons normally attack more than just one LCU?

couple of PTs attacked, too many ships involved to see them in the combat replay, heck they aren´t even all included in the combat report. Well, the game once again showed it´s ugly face with a bug as we got the message that my two surface combat TFs REACTED to another SC TF near MADRAS!! Well, Madras is Allied, reacts should only happen to friendly bases. Then my SC TF moved 6 hexes towards Rangoon (well, they can only move 4 hexes with the BBs but they moved 6 hexes ) and the result is that my convoys at Yanam were unguarded.

In fact it was that the enemy PTs moved in at night from Madras, the game engine went crazy, the sh*t with the react movement happened and at daylight only my invasion TFs were left at Yanam. Would have everything gone like it should be, the PTs would have triggered a night naval engagement at Yanam against my BB TFs...

ouch, that hurts! Must have been some really bad die rolls this turn. I have wrecked three of my divs, they are moving out to Homan, three fresh units are ordered to move in. I´m not happy with the fact that we didn´t even manage to take a fort level down... well, air to ground attacks on more than one enemy LCU would have helped a lot I guess...

Status: offline 		I know this might not be an option for you, but one way to get around only hitting one LCU with your LBA, is to strike from more than one AF. At least that's my experience.
