a day with heavy ASW action... AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/05/42 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 29,67 Japanese Ships PC Shonan Maru #17 PC Shonan Maru #6 PC Kyo Maru #12 PC Kyo Maru #13 PC Shonan Maru #1 PC Shonan Maru #7 Allied Ships SS KXIV spotted this sub moving to Balikpapan and attacked it South of Borno without any results... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack near Makin at 85,89 Japanese Ships DD Matsukaze DD Harukaze DD Ushio DD Sazanami DD Akebono DD Murakumo Allied Ships SS Flying Fish, hits 3, on fire Flying Fish has been sitting at Makin for nearly a week and today my DDs showed up achieving two hits and a near miss with Type 91 DCs. First I thought it would be FOW as two hits didnīt even cause heavy damage but it seems we were very lucky during the "adjust ship damage phase" and before dawn we got the message that the sub is going down with itīs captain! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 50,48 Japanese Ships PC Ch 13 PC Ch 3 PC Ch 2 PC Ch 1 PC Kyo Maru #2 PC Fumi Maru Allied Ships SS Whale and the ASW goes on... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- here comes the dayīs highlight... Naval bombardment of Darwin, at 36,84 Allied aircraft no flights Allied aircraft losses B-26B Marauder: 11 destroyed PBY Catalina: 3 destroyed P-40B Tomahawk: 6 destroyed Kittyhawk I: 5 destroyed Japanese Ships CA Kako CA Furutaka CA Kinugasa CA Aoba CA Mikuma CA Mogami Allied ground losses: 591 casualties reported Guns lost 12 Airbase hits 16 Airbase supply hits 2 Runway hits 82 daily recon from Lautern showed the airfield stacked to itīs limits and I hoped to catch a lot of bombers, especially Mitchells, perhaps some B-17s. No Mitchells and no 4Es at the base but some Marauders and P-40B which is also nice as those fighters could reach Lautern from Darwin. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52 Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 28 D3A Val x 51 B5N Kate x 4 G4M1 Betty x 31 Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 70 No Japanese losses Allied ground losses: 33 casualties reported Airbase hits 2 Runway hits 25 Port hits 2 Aircraft Attacking: 32 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar bombing at 2000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Darwin , at 36,84 Japanese aircraft Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 35 Ki-21 Sally x 19 Ki-49 Helen x 52 Ki-46-II Dinah x 4 Allied aircraft Kittyhawk I x 14 P-40B Tomahawk x 3 Japanese aircraft losses Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 3 damaged Ki-21 Sally: 1 damaged Ki-49 Helen: 4 damaged Allied aircraft losses Kittyhawk I: 7 destroyed P-40B Tomahawk: 6 destroyed B-26B Marauder: 6 destroyed Airbase hits 7 Airbase supply hits 1 Runway hits 19 Aircraft Attacking: 6 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 16000 feet we also moved 200 medium bombers to Lautern and then... "§%&"!$§%&$$!!! 2/3 of my strike failed to locate the target! We could have destroyed a hundred ac more with a full strike I guess as only 19 hits destroyed a lot of ac... in the end it was a succesful day, not much more than annoying for the Allied though and we seem to be once again the unbeatable champion of the world in op losses... Compare that with the two B-17 lost when 51 are damaged... of our total ac lost so far, about 60% are op losses. Of the total Allied ac lost so far, about 15% are op losses. The Allied lost twice as many ac as we did, which means we suffer twice the op losses every time... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 39th Division, at 41,35 Allied aircraft Blenheim IV x 9 SB-2c x 3 Allied aircraft losses Blenheim IV: 3 damaged SB-2c: 1 damaged Japanese ground losses: 19 casualties reported Guns lost 2 Aircraft Attacking: 3 x Blenheim IV bombing at 6000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 39th Division, at 41,35 Allied aircraft Blenheim IV x 3 Wellington III x 6 No Allied losses Japanese ground losses: 27 casualties reported Guns lost 1 Aircraft Attacking: 6 x Wellington III bombing at 10000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 116th Division, at 41,35 Allied aircraft Blenheim IV x 12 SB-2c x 3 Allied aircraft losses Blenheim IV: 2 damaged Japanese ground losses: 17 casualties reported Guns lost 1 Aircraft Attacking: 3 x Blenheim IV bombing at 6000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 116th Division, at 41,35 Allied aircraft Wellington III x 3 No Allied losses Aircraft Attacking: 3 x Wellington III bombing at 10000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 51st Division, at 41,35 Allied aircraft Blenheim IV x 6 Wellington III x 3 No Allied losses Japanese ground losses: 22 casualties reported Aircraft Attacking: 3 x Wellington III bombing at 10000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on 4th Ind. Just too costly... as you can see here and in the previous attacks, more and more British bomber show up in China... If I would be Miller I wouldnīt burn precious Chinese supply with those bombing runs that achieve nothing... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sub attack at 30,73 Japanese Ships AK Kozan Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage AK Sakae Maru MSW Yoshino Maru MSW Toshi Maru #8 MSW Toshi Maru #7 MSW Toshi Maru #2 Allied Ships SS KXIV and here comes the Allied success of this turn, the small AK is dead, happened North of Timor, the escorts perform like they always do... what was positive is the fact that TWO Allied subs off Lae were hit by Helen on nav search. Amazing, there are three sentais set on 10% nav search, so max 18 bombers are on search and they achieved two hits on subs today... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack near Lautem at 33,78 Japanese Ships DD Nagatsuki DD Yayoi DD Fubuki DD Ikazuchi DD Yugure DD Wakaba Allied Ships SS Grayling No DCs dropped, this is the escort of my cruisers that bombarded Darwin... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at 28,17 Japanese Shock attack Attacking force 20508 troops, 4 guns, 1324 vehicles, Assault Value = 755 Defending force 1370 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1 Japanese max assault: 1334 - adjusted assault: 1205 Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1 Japanese assault odds: 1205 to 1 Allied ground losses: 493 casualties reported Defeated Allied Units Retreating! we keep on attacking the RAF base force on the railline North of Asansol.
