Sent a cruiser bombardment force to Batavia because the airfield there and Soerabaja is where I expect the RAF that fled from Singapore to be. Sagiri hits an Mk6 mine but will probably make it...

the result of the bombardment is ok as I´ve done no recon before as the base is out of recon plane range... The only thing I´m more or less afraid in this area at this stage of the war are Vildebeests and the dozen Dutch torp bombers, so it´s nice if some of them are destroyed.

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x D3A Val bombing at 2000 feet
4 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet

yesterday, I had KB 7 or 8 hexes NW of Pearl when my Glen equipped subs South of Pearl spotted several TFs going towards Pearl. I was sure that the BBs are coming back and was nearly shocked to see that. I´ve ordered KB to move full speed South to catch them. KB was spotted yesterday also so bigbaba was some kind of lucky, if he hadn´t spotted KB those TFs would now be destroyed. I still wanted to try to catch them, perhaps he would oversee the sighting of KB. He didn´t and the BB TFs moved full speed away again but we stumbled across this TF, which also surprised me. We sink CA Louisville and a big AP. Why, just why does he include this heavy cruiser in this TF and why is he sending them towards Pearl when he knows KB must be somewhere near. Not to talk about the move with his BBs! This is highly careless, if KB wouldn´t have been spotted he would have paid today.

Here´s the attack on HongKong! Like I have said before I prefer using real force to take bases fast than to have a long fight. It worked very well, the base fell with the first attack and we nearly suffered at all. As usual all facilities at Hong Kong are nearly totally destroyed.

Another victim of Japanese carrier based aircraft, the USN heavy cruiser Louisville was sunk today! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

USS Louisville (CA-28, originally CL-28), 1931-1959
USS Louisville, a 9050-ton Northampton class light cruiser built at the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Washington, was commissioned in January 1931. In July 1931, during her shakedown cruise to the east coast, she was reclassified as a heavy cruiser and her hull number was changed from CL-28 to CA-28. During the rest of the decade and into the early 1940s, she operated with the U.S. Fleet and on independent missions, mainly in the Pacific but also visiting the Caribbean, the U.S. Atlantic coast and Latin American ports. In 1938, Louisville crossed the Pacific, calling on Australia, Tahiti and Samoa. When the European War began in September 1939 the cruiser, then making a South American cruise, was sent to South Africa to pick up British gold for transportation to the United States.

In December 1941, when Japan opened World War II in the Pacific, Louisville was at sea escorting ships from the East Indies to Hawaii. She took part in U.S. aircraft carrier raids in the central and southern Pacific in February and March 1942. During the middle of the year, Louisville operated in the Aleutians area, then went to the southern Pacific late in 1942 to participate in the final months of the Guadalcanal campaign. In late January 1943, she was present during the air-sea Battle of Rennell Island. Hit by a dud torpedo, but not damaged, she then towed the crippled cruiser Chicago until that duty was taken over by the tug Navajo.

Louisville was sent back to the Aleutians in April 1943 and remained in that area until after the recapture of Attu and Kiska. She was overhauled at the Mare Island Navy Yard and then began long service providing heavy gunfire support for amphibious landings. In this role, the cruiser bombarded Wotje, Kwajalein and Eniwetok, in the Marshall Islands, in January-February 1944. After serving with the carriers on central Pacific raids in March and April, Louisville provided invasion support bombardments at Saipan, Tinian and Guam during June and July 1944, Peleliu in September and Leyte in October. On 24-25 October, when the Japanese Navy attempted to counter the Leyte landings, she took part in the Battle of Surigao Strait.

On 5-6 January 1945, Louisville was hit by two Japanese suicide planes but remained on station to support the invasion of Leyte at Lingayen Gulf. Withdrawn for repairs, she arrived back in the war zone in time to take part in the last weeks of the Okinawa campaign, and was hit by another Kamikaze on 5 June. After the end of the Pacific War, Louisville supported occupation activities along the China coast. She was sent back to the U.S. later in 1945 and decommissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in June 1946. Louisville was retained in the Reserve Fleet until September 1959, when she was sold for scrapping.

1200 AV at Hong Kong ?  What did you bring ?  Three divisions ?

Nice bombardment result with only three CA's.  And that's what is called poetic justice, a minelayer hitting a mine.

Ten days in the war, and he's hiding his CVs.  With KB "sticking" near PH and so many of your Nell/Betty around Malaya & the Philippines, I would have thought he would strike in the south pacific, in the Marshalls, Gilberts, etc.

two divs, one bgd, arty, eng and a HQ.

There´s nothing he can strike in the South Pacific, Marshalls or Gilberts. And if he dares to come within 11 hexes then he will be in range of 81 Betties/Nells from Kwajalein.

WOW!  That's loads to take HK.  I managed it with 1 Div of Inf, 2 Combat Eng Units and 3 or 4 Artillery units.  It took until about Christmas for it to fall, but now I have some cheap labor for a railroad building project in Burma.

that´s exactly what I don´t wanted. Those divs I used are around Canton anyway, so first I moved them to Canton, then set them alltogether to cross into the Hong Kong hex. One attack, the base fell. Casualties for me: some 500 troops. Two days later all my troops were in Canton again.

And that is what I´m trying to do at all fronts at the moment. Attack with force to make the fighting as short as possible. I guess you will see more of what other would call overkill.

Overkill is good.  I did HK on the cheap and got it on the 20th of December on the 2nd or 3rd assault.  The other troops in China are off on other adventures.

Castor doesn't need plans to take advantage of inexperiance, Inexperiance alone means one commits mistakes that are costly. In many of my games I blunder thru many mistakes, not respecting bettys and nells, Not knowing how strong the KB was, etc.

What the inexperiance doesn't give you, is truly how vulnerable the Japanese position can be, it is a lot of show and power at the point of attack, but if you let it accelerate and tuck tail it will be able to consolidate. If you interfere, and you can it has to slow and protect. Because its like an eggshell easily cracked and broken.

Once again the great thing about two new opponents playing, as in my game vs Scott, its mainly not knowing what the opponent's tendancies are. Castor can already count on his opponent making inexperianced mistakes, what he doesn't know is how he will react?

Tuck tail and run (An effective strategy for allied command, can always comeback in 43 but slow and boring game). Or start jabbing back and enjoy the ride, once again the allies always will gain overwhelming arms and in my opinion will win the vast majority of the time. The question becomes how fun was the ride.

Castor, I like your opening move, Hitting Manila I believe is key, but I never thought about hitting pearl airfields to get around the one port strike. Very well done.

I disagree with your rush to take Hong Kong, as allied I will rush to Canton to prevent what you have done, but there is no need to rush. The slow pounding will eventually disable the british and you can capture most of the industry intact. Your overwhelming force is good for speed, but you pay in supply points to rebuild. Once again both ways work its a style choice.

Enjoy the ride.

No, I don´t want to take advantage of his experience. It´s the other way around, I´m thinking of slowing my advance down a bit. This doesn´t mean that I will halt my advance when the historical goals are achieved though. Seizing the historical targets is most times too boring in a PBEM, especially if the Allied do a complete Sir Robin - which seems to be the case here.

But for sure, I will try not to exploit his inexperience too much, if this is possible. Of course I can´t stop him from sending Force Z into it´s death a week after the war has started when they are cruising around in the Malacca straight. The next couple of crs include some nice moves of bigbaba, so hopefully the "overall strategy" will soon become an advanced beginners strategy!

Honestly, I didn´t even know that he was a PBEM beginner. All I´ve realized in his opponent wanted thread was that he joined the forum 2006 (good), played UV PBEM (good) and he looked for an experienced IJN opponent (good). So I´ve thought that he would have played a couple of games already.

The reason KB was hitting Pearls airfields is the fact that I don´t need KB anywhere else, so destroying those 200+ ac there is just a bonus. And of course it means that on day two you have the chance to see KB being in range of one, two, three... BBs that are running from Hawai. This wasn´t the case but I´ve killed another two dozen ships in Pearl, including a couple of SS , DM, AR and other ships of all kind of types. In the SRA there is no need for KB as there are no Allied targets left. So the main focus for KB will be the Pacific, mopping up some attols or stumbling across a couple of cargo TFs. I don´t expect to meet the enemy carrier force or seeing my opponent intervening with my offensive there as he knows that KB is near and this would be near suicide.

Hong Kong, yes you are right, as the Allied you should rush to Canton. Well, I know that and 1500 assault points were blocking the way TO Canton on the railroad in a wooden hex NW of Canton. So, not blocking the way to Canton would be a beginners fault. My experience with Allied troop concentrations (non Chinese) in bases with industry/rescources/oil is that even if I pound them to death, at the end I always seem to experience the dice roll that destroys 90-100% of what is there. Knowing this I normally don´t expect to get anything when there are Allied troop concentrations, for example in Malaya, when they do a fighting retreat. I´ve had Kuala Lumpur (big resource center with 600 rescources) completely destroyed a lot of times already, no matter what I´ve tried so getting it with 502(600) like this time is a bonus for me. And I took the UNOCCUPIED base - still nearly 20% was destroyed. Taking Canton without losses and fast makes it now possible for my troops to rest in Canton, being combat ready asap, as you know, nearly all of the units in China start understrenght or with disabled squads.

And I won´t spend any supplies rebuilding destroyed industry/resource/oil centers anyway. If something bad happens, like the destruction of a major oil or resource center, then normally I adjust my plans and try to seize another (non historical) target that provides me with the oil/resource that was destroyed at the historical target.

those Martins are getting dangerous. With such a high number of bombs, they can pretty fast get ship killers when the pilot´s exp goes up. Even though they are only dropping 250lb bombs, such a bomb is enough to sink a MSW...

I´m really getting too careless. Is this because my subconscious knows that my opponent is inexperienced? Luckily, this torp hit is only FOW. Landing at Singkawang when your opponent can base low range torp bombers just one hex to the West is something really stupid...

I´m an experienced player but once again I make a mistake. On the stock map, there is a road from Singkawang to Pontianak just one hex South, but this is in fact only a trail! So I shouldn´t have landed both TK rgts here but one here and the other one in the next base...

DD Asagiri
DD Yugiri
DD Amagiri

Allied Ships
PT TM-10
PT TM-11
PT TM-12
PT TM-13
PT TM-14
PT TM-15

Seems the number of mistakes I´m doing increases steadily. Haven´t done recon and my sub didn´t spot anything here (perhaps the PTs just moved in, could be also). I send in another bombardment TF and am SUPER LUCKY! The surface combat begins and THE ALLIED TF SUPRISES THE JAPANESE TF!!! Three PTs launch torps at DDs and all miss! Phewww... then the engagement is over...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Balikpapan, at 31,64

Japanese Ships
CA Kumano
CA Suzuya

Allied ground losses:
114 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 1

Airbase hits 2

Balikpapan´s airfield was totally missed it seems as we didn´t destroy any of the bombers there...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Pontianak, at 25,58

Allied aircraft losses
Vildebeest IV: 4 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
867 casualties reported
Guns lost 6
Vehicles lost 4

Airbase hits 11
Airbase supply hits 10
Runway hits 71
Port fuel hits 1

after bigbaba saw my BBs being moved to Singkawang he also moved torp bombers to Pontianak. Well, at least this was predictable and so I´ve sent my battlewaggons to visit the base and torch the bombers on the ground. Recon helped a lot and there shouldn´t be any attacks today coming from this base.

Allied ground losses:

the scared Japanese cruisers do a half hearted attack after the PT attack but still inflicted a good number of casualties within the defenders.

Port hits 2

Aircraft Attacking:
14 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 16000 feet

am thinking about reducing Singapores CD defense with port strikes and then later on move in two BB TFs to bombard the base as this would surely kill most of the support troops, which would make bombing a lot saver... I´ve got somewhat respect of Singapores CD defense though...

AK Hokuzan Maru

Aircraft Attacking:

damn it! I´ve moved in fighters for Cap yesterday but they can´t launch because the airfield is 71% damaged. Thougth it would still be possible to fly Cap...

Sounds like the story of my friend in Nam:  At a fire base in the Central Highlands things were peaceful and only outgoing until one night they got a rocket & mortar bombardment raining down on the base.  Everyone spilled out of the hooch running for cover and he dove under the steps to the hooch, which collapsed on him under the weight of the stampede.  He got a Purple Heart for the splinters in his posterior region.    If the bombardment had been accompanied by an assault he said that the base would've been overrun in nothing flat due to the panic & lack of organization.

we´re only 15 days into the war and it´s already totally quiet... nothing is happening, all Allied LCUs retreat where they can and not a single Allied ship (except a couple of SS) is spotted somewhere...

What seems to become obvious now though is that the Allied are making a stand in Malaya NORTH of Singapore...

Well, there's a full-strength USMC Defense Bn at Midway - Wake's is only half-strength.  And that's a lot of machineguns...  Did you only bring two SNLFs, or something like that ?  That's quite different from your usual & successful overkill method.

I brought two SNLFs, but not those with around 20 assault points but together nearly 100. Should be enough for 16 defending assault points. Not when your invasion gets totally shot up though.

Do you know if he's consolidating somewhere in the DEI, or did he manage to actually evacuate all those units to Oz or India ?

no, he seems to stick to a couple of places, he wouldn´t have enough pps anyway to evacuate all troops... and there is no sign of a single ship...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/25/41

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Batavia at 19,59

Japanese Ships
CL Kuma
DD Asakaze
DD Harukaze
DD Matsukaze
DD Hatakaze

Allied Ships
PT TM-10
PT TM-11, Shell hits 3, and is sunk
PT TM-12
PT TM-13, Shell hits 3, and is sunk
PT TM-14
PT TM-15

I see those six PTs at Batavia as a threat, so I moved in a SC TF to tangle with them. With surprise on our side, two of them were sunk and then the engagment was already over...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 18 troops unloading over beach at Kavieng, 61,86

Japanese ground losses:
47 casualties reported

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Fergusson Island at 57,94

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 23
G3M Nell x 25

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
PG Moa
AK Irenee Du Pont
PG Kiwi
AK Liberty Glo, Bomb hits 1
AK Sagadahoc

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x G3M Nell bombing at 6000 feet

Wonder what this TF is doing here. Nells are stationed at Lae (airfield 3) and while Nells are ship killers when attacking with torps, they are pretty useless when attacking with bombs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Palembang

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 754 troops, 5 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 25

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese max assault: 24 - adjusted assault: 13

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 13 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Palembang base !!!

we take the empty base and 30% of the oil is damaged... Pretty bad news, considering that this is the biggest oil field...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Midway

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 2611 troops, 76 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 35

Defending force 2599 troops, 21 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 57

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/26/41

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 46 encounters mine field at Batavia (19,59)

Japanese Ships
CL Kuma, Mine hits 1, on fire
DD Hatakaze, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

damn those mines, Hatakaze probably won´t make it...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 96,63

Japanese Ships
DD Kasumi
DD Arare
DD Tanikaze

Allied Ships
SS Tambor, hits 3

Tambor gets 3 near misses South of Midway... a TF with only 2 spotted ships was spotted 6 hexes East of Midway speed 0. This speed 0 makes me curious. I guess this could be a TF of some half dozen ships going into position to do a bombardment run on Midway. Or a fast transport perhaps. Pretty much suicide with KB around Midway. We will see what happens tomorrow...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Batavia at 19,59

Japanese Ships
CL Kuma, on fire
DD Asakaze
DD Harukaze
DD Matsukaze
DD Hatakaze, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
PT TM-10
PT TM-12
PT TM-14, Shell hits 3, and is sunk
PT TM-15, Shell hits 3, and is sunk

two more PTs are sunk and my bombardment TF goes in...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Batavia at 19,59

Japanese Ships
CA Chokai
CA Mogami
CA Mikuma
DD Shigure
DD Kawakaze
DD Ayanami
DD Asagiri
DD Yugiri
DD Amagiri

Allied Ships
PT TM-10, Shell hits 15, and is sunk
PT TM-12, Shell hits 14, and is sunk

...to kill the last two PTs remaining...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Batavia, at 19,59

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
CW-21B Demon: 1 destroyed
Martin 139: 1 destroyed

CA Chokai

Allied ground losses:
812 casualties reported
Guns lost 10
Vehicles lost 3

Airbase hits 2
Runway hits 6
Port hits 8
Port fuel hits 1
Port supply hits 2

a lot of casualties and a lot of port hits. Would like to target the airfield though as there are reported 40 bombers. Guess there will be two dozen then...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 20,59

Japanese Ships
CL Kuma

Allied Ships
SS KXII

this would have caused trouble and Kuma would be seriously hurt. Two torps miss though...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 54
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 12
Ki-21 Sally x 156

P-40E Warhawk x 16

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 2 damaged
Ki-21 Sally: 1 destroyed, 18 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40B Tomahawk: 4 destroyed
P-40E Warhawk: 6 destroyed, 5 damaged

Allied ground losses:
189 casualties reported
Guns lost 6

Airbase hits 6
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 31

Aircraft Attacking:
11 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet

We torch a dozen fighters on the ground, the hit rate of my bombers is once again pathetic though. My fighters don´t achieve high kill rates as the defenders are so low on morale that the bogey out all the time... But with only 40 P-40B a month as replacement, every fighter lost hurts... no sense fighting here for the Allied but I like it!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Homan

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 7679 troops, 103 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2079

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Naga

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 304 troops, 4 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 17

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese max assault: 22 - adjusted assault: 13

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1
