Well, we've seen a good deal of ground combat and land air force action recently, but how are your carrier forces doing?

When do you get to upgrade to D4Ys, and B6Ns? How many carriers are you at now, and do you have any new ones being built up now?

Even facing such a difficult challenge as the new allied CV's your carriers should still give your opponent something to worry about.

my carriers are sitting in port waiting for the Allied to come. This means we plan to do the same as last time near Darwin and what is usually the plan of Japanese high command: wear down the Allied carriers with LBA first and then send in the carriers to cause major trouble. The only new carrier we received was the Unryu and we got it nearly half a year early. The two Chitose CVLs will show up within the next three weeks and another Unryu CV as well. The converted (by accident) BB Hyuga (or is it Ise?) will show up within the next two months also. Two more CVs are accelerated and will show up within the next 6 months. CV Taiho isn´t accelerated but will show up in 4 months.

Getting new carriers is fine, but they aren´t combat ready within the first two to three months after comissioning as we have to train up the aircrews. At the moment I guess we are at least on par with the Allied when it comes down to carrier based ac. We haven´t lost a single carrier of course so far.

All my carrier based fighters have been upgraded to the Zeke already, this is the carrier based fighter for the next 1.5 years as the A6M8 and the Reppu won´t show up before end of 44 or early 45. The Judy will go online next month, some 130 or so will be produced per month. Another big improvement will be the Jill which will give us a torpedo range of 5 hexes. The Jill will show up within the next two months, also here something like 130 per month in production. This means we have a slight advantage against the Allied CVs as the TBFs have a torp range of 4 and max range of 5 but IIRC the Hellcat only has a range of 4. I could be wrong about this and have to definetely look it up again because if I´m correct, then the task would be to launch a strike from 5 hexes with Judies and torp carrying Jills, while the Allied CVs could not launch at all or at least not escorted. This would be the Jackpot but that´s just plain luck I guess as either my carriers or the Allied ones usually react to close the range.

In any case, my carrier force is definetely something the Allied have to worry about, especially when I stick to my plan not to use them without LBA support. When looking at the performance of my Tonies so far then my carriers and two or three hundred IJAAF Tonies could be a problem for 200 Hellcats per hex (depending how the ratio between CVs and CVLs is in the hex). I expect to see Miller showing up for the next big invasion with one (or more) carrier TF with 450 ac in the hex (due to the house rules we have) and another one with 250 or more carrier based ac in another hex.

at least if i understand correctly he has to juggle his airbridge between townsville and cairns... this should help you.

unfortunately it doesn´t help me at all as Miller can react to my attacks and as soon as one base seems to fall (which will never happen due to the Allied building forts from 8 to 9 in a week) he can fly in a division in two days. And I would need at least 4000 av more to knock out both bases at once it seems. Again, this is due to the massive effects of Allied engineers. We have at least a 2 or 3:1 advantage in attack strenght at both bases but if we can´t take down the forts fast enough then we will fail.

We will probably fail to take the bases but we won´t fail to absolutely achieve our main goal which is to delay the Allied in total. After the fall of Port Moresby we had to fear an ongoing offensive out of this base but there is no sign of such a thing. And Miller has to use a lot of divs now in Australia that can´t be used elsewhere to attack me. So the grand situation is fine, but the curtain will soon be falling. The next major problem will start in 4/44 with 150 B-29s being produced per month. Everything will be burnt within 20 hexes of an Allied level 6 base.

I´m pretty sure that Miller is flying troops from Iman to Blagoveshchensk. Iman´s av and troop number is going down while Blagoveshchensk´s is going up and we´ve spotted two dozen aux aircraft at Iman... won´t interfere with this as I don´t care about any of those two bases... as soon as Khomsomalsk is ours I consider the operations against the Russian in the central area a full success... Blagoveshchensk and Iman will just be starved, leaves Irkutsk then...

after having lost 8 B-17 a couple of days ago, it seems Miller kept his bombers on nav attack. They´ve launched again today and we only manage to take two of them down. I´ve counted 9 separate messages of a B-17 being damaged, which means each of the two bombers that were shot down has been at least 4 times damaged before being downed...

at this base the combat replay shows two AA units and two Russian base forces. They put up a year 2009 style flak defense and if we wouldn´t have attacked from just one hex, this would have cost us three dozen bombers. Well, that way it "only" has cost us 13 bombers with 10 crews lost over the target... is this only for me insane??

oh boy. A dozen AA rgt/btn that are fully combat ready can take down a Mitchell at 20.000ft if the Japanese gunners are totally lucky and Allied flak is just insane... too insane in comparison. Just toooooo insane, I can only repeat myself on and on and on....

I´m not arguing that Allied flak wasn´t far more deadlier than Japanese but surely also due to the number of gun tubes but IMO an Allied flak gun shouldn´t be treated as a SAM...

damn... first we got two messages of dozens of Lightnings failing to locate Tarawa and there were still 83 coming in on a sweep. It´s mid 10/43 and there were over 100 of the bastards ordered to sweep my base already. 90 per month coming out of the factory so I should have been aware of this but it was nevertheless surprising to me. It was a day full of surprises as I wasn´t aware either that the J-version can reach Tarawa from the atoll 660 miles South of Tarawa. But looking the plane up it showed an extended range of 11, which means Apamama and Tarawa are in range, Makin isn´t though. I had no fighters or bombers on Apamama because I was sure the airfield would be in range of enemy long range fighters but thought Tarawa wouldn´t be.

At the beginning of the engagement we had the bounce and our Tonies took quite a toll on the enemy but as soon as the bounce ended we were only on par and finally the enemy bounced us, taking a dozen Tonies down for no loss. It was quite shocking to watch to be honest (even if we came out with a kill ratio in our favour) as I wouldn´t have thought the Lightnings would perform that good at max range with pilots that should still be lower experienced than ours. Makin and Tarawa are defended by our most experienced fighter sentais.

My goal until this stage of the war always was to avoid being drawn into an atrittion battle and therefore we try not to have our airforce within 5 hexes of an enemy base (preferrable not within 6 hexes). With the P-38J showing up in big numbers and it´s range of 11 we are now facing a different situation... we´re nearing 44 and probably won´t be able to avoid the atrittion of our airforce anymore.

the Lightnings returned to their home base in the morning reporting all fighter defense over Tarawa has been destroyed and in the afternoon the heavy bombers showed up. We again got a message about parts of the strike failing to locate the target. Nearly 100 show up over the base, still encoutering a good number of our fighters in the air, looks like we were quite lucky with the cap die rolls in the afternoon. The Tonies performed quite ok, I was amazed about the number of bombers that crashed on their way home. Nearly the same number of Tonies was destroyed on the ground as was shot down by the Lightnings. All in all we achieved a victory today but I would nevertheless have preferred to avoid this engagement as we also lost more than just a couple of our elite pilots. We immedietely ordered the evacuation of Tarawa´s airfield, the only one that will be defended in this area is Makin as it´s out of Lightning range. With enough Tonies on hand we can easily oppose unescorted 4E strikes of some 100 bombers, if more it could get nasty. The ongoing strikes against Baker Island and the attacks on Tarawa today more and more convince me that the Gilberts or Baker Island will be the next target for an Allied invasion. My first bet is still Baker, followed by Tarawa.

Miller has moved a completely worn down Russian division out of the mountains into Mutanchiang (base NW of Vladivostok). There are no HI/oil/resources so it doesn´t matter at all and the unit won´t be able to move out as there´s no supply path to a friendly base. At the moment this unit is acting as a target for over 100 Helens. A Mongolian cav div and an aviation rgt are easily enough to keep the enemy in place.

I wonder what I should do with all my Helens when the Russian adventure finally is finished (concerning the airwar it already is anyway). I can´t use them to attack enemy bases as this is just like a Kamikaze attack when thinking about Allied flak, don´t even want to think about Corsairs on Cap. Using them against enemy shipping isn´t a need at the moment either as we have enough exp IJNAF bombers around and the Helens aren´t really effective against ships anyway. Leaves them for the nav search roll but the SRA is already enough covered and the enemy subs have withdrawn anyway. 300 Helens without something else than training to do at the moment. In mid 44 we will get the Peggy which carries a torp and which would give us 300+ high exp aditional torp bombers if we could preserve those Helen sentais. But mid 44 is a loooong way to go and I doubt that there won´t be a need for the Helens earlier.

I´m only dreaming about our areas being totally covered by Type 13 radar sets and hundreds of high experienced Peggies being escorted by also high experienced Franks...

The invasion of the Gilberts could be an opportunity for an IJN counterstrike. However, given the destruction of nearby airfields, do you have any operational bases in range capable of launching LBA? If not, a counterattack would not be compatible with your very effective LBA first, carriers second doctrine.

and here comes the invasion... can you imagine that MAKIN is the target??? It was more or less obvious the last days that the Gilberts are the target but Makin is definetely the worst choice. This base is exactly 11 hexes from Kwajalein so every base in the Marschalls can launch Zero escorted bomber strikes if I wish to, not to take about the fact that I can use Mili 4 hexes North of Makin as my staging base for surface combat TFs that can reach Makin during the night and keep them under a 200 Tony Cap.

the bad or funny thing about Makin is that I had two MLEs there to replenish a 25 ship ML TF each turn. So in no time I had the mines there in the ten thousands which is insane anyway, but given the non-effect of my mines so far (2 ships sunk from ML laid mines) I thought that would be a nasty surprise if an enemy TF would enter Makin. Well, I must have triggered a bug as sometime over 30.000 mines they just vanished and even if I clicked to lay mines they never showed up again. Funny that Miller then choses exactly this "mine free" base... damn bugged programme...

while our adjusted av was far from what I´ve expected, the enemy´s adjusted av is just horrible... with this 0:1 the Allied assault has already failed for sure as there are still troops on the ships as the divisions didn´t show up as full units during the ground combat replay... BANZAI...

after the easy loss of Canton Island it was clear for us that we can´t hold an atoll with only 500 assault points when 120 are coming from base forces that are annihilated by enemy naval bombardements. As we decided that the Gilberts are important areas of defense, there are a lot of troops and I dropped 120 av in form of para units into Makin today as we were sure the invasion would go in here after yesterdays recon...

Allied Unit(s) surrounded at Mutanchiang

the Russian division at Mutanchiang surrendered... there are no units anymore out of Russian bases and three bases are left... only Irkutsk will be attacked...

The invasion of the Gilberts could be an opportunity for an IJN counterstrike. However, given the destruction of nearby airfields, do you have any operational bases in range capable of launching LBA? If not, a counterattack would not be compatible with your very effective LBA first, carriers second doctrine.

Makin is the perfect target (for me) in terms of LBA first and carriers second doctrine. Because Makin is in range of Zero escorted bombers from all bases North of Makin to Kwajalein.

chris, thats a excelent opportunity to cause heavy damage to the allied war efforts. since he will be around makin for several turns (thanks to your excelent ground troops there), you have a chance to bring the KB and your battlefleet and sink even more allied carrier and transport capacity.

that should be another slaughter fest after N-australia and PM.

well, after this last turn I got following reply from my opponent, mostly due to me having my BBs at Miri:

Lol, no CAP trap. As expected Yamato, Musashi and Co are no doubt sitting under 200 Tonys at Mili. Meanwhile the KB will be sitting under a huge Tony LRCAP from Majuro....

I can live with the latter as this is historical, but the BBs as bait is gamey, simple as that, especially as they are immune to two thirds of my strike a/c. As there is no house rule against it I will have to live with it, but how would you feel if I sent a couple of crappy DDs north to draw airstrikes? The only way I can counter this would be to fill my carriers with fighters and soak up any attacks before flying in their strike groups from nearby bases. Would you be happy if I did that? Of course not.....

As things stand it looks like ultimately my lack of ground units will be my undoing, but hell, it would be nice to actually get a shot at the KB without having to resort to bullshit tactics.

I ran the turn and answered:

I wonder how serious I should take your thoughts…

You attack a base that is in the middle of at least 10 of my airfields that I can fill with up to 250 aircraft each. The reason why you attack Makin is beyond me anyway. Then you tell me I´m not allowed to use fighters on Cap. THAT is lol. Just lol. Wonder if I should have asked you not to put a couple of hundred fighters at PM. Hey Paul, using fighters is GAMEY from now on. Then I have 6 BBs at Mili. Hey, again gamey. You come along with how many BBs? 16? More. Heck, that is of course not gamey. THAT is again lol. You tell me you can´t hurt my BBs. Can I hurt yours? KB doesn´t carry more torp bombers than your carriers, in fact you have more torp bombers on your carriers than I have. The best thing for you of course would be that I fill up my front line bases with transport or perhaps unescorted bombers and have my BBs unescorted doing attack runs against your carriers. Or what are you expecting me to do? If you want to have stupid things to happen than you have to play the AI but don´t expect me to be stupid enough to send in KB against 700 carrier based ac of yours. Just tell me one reason other than to make you happy why I should do that? What do you think I am. a semi nuts AI clone?

Do whatever you want to do. Fill up your carriers with fighters only and I will do the same. Send in DDs to soak up airstrikes, they are your DDs. I don´t care. In fact, I´m tired of having to discuss things in every PBEM as soon as my opponent knocks his head onto a wall because he´s done something wrong (and attacking Makin instead of Baker or Apamama is muchos wrong). Why? Because it would be the same as attacking Kwajalein with all the unsupressed airfields around. I wonder if there´s a more difficult target than Makin at the moment. Perhaps Tarawa but when looking at my aircraft ranges then Makin is the worst choice. And there isn´t a single Tony over KB, but I´m not as stupid as you would wish me to be to send KB in with a “hurrey, please sink me”. Again, why you think that the Japanese isn´t allowed to use Cap but the Allied can put hundreds of Corsairs and Thunderbolts at a base to fly Cap is just beyond me. Just go ahead and keep your BBs in port and I will do the same. If the Allied are allowed to use two dozen BBs then probably the Japanese should be allowed to use half a dozen BBs too.

The things that happened around Darwin and are now happening around Makin are not because I have done something so brilliantly, both times you have done something wrong. It´s not my fault if you drive right into 1000+ land base aircraft when you can easily avoid that. But if you do, don´t tell me I shouldn´t use my aircraft please.

I have to say that it was the first time that I was called gamey due to me using BBs...

well, its 100 times more gamey to send 4E bombers at 35k and abuse their ability in witp to nuke the base with laser guided bombs.

and then the most succesful engagement of the night against the Colorad/West Virginia TF again... we surprise them and wreck havoc... three CAs sank during the engagement, Frobisher doesn´t look good either. In all engagements BB Musashi proved to be the most dangerous, hitting with 18 inch and 6 inch gun fire. Especially the 6 inch batteries prove to work very well at short range during the night as they were able to penetrate the Allied CAs belt armor while the enemy´s 5 inch shells did no damage on our cruisers. What isn´t fun at all is the loss of nearly half a dozen Yugumo class destroyers as those are carrying air search radar. In total the enemy probably lost 5 CAs, has a BB heavily damaged and probably 9 destroyers are sunk. We have Mutsu damaged and lost 5 destroyers... this seems like a victory for us, I would have preferred to only meet the enemy invasion TFs though and to be honest, I didn´t expect to meet the enemy BBs. Don´t know if Miller thought I would send my BBs in or if the enemy BB TFs were intending to do just another bombardment. When looking at their performance, I would say they were bombardment TFs but I don´t know... we did not get through to the transports...

here you can see how gamey it is to have Japanese BBs in use... After being hit twice by heavy gunfire during the night engagement, BB Mutsu was slowed down and didn´t make the four hexes back to Mili (it only moved three... ). While Miller had his carriers further away from Makin the last turns, he sent them one hex closer in this turn, which resulted in my BB being in range of his carriers. Mutsu had no chance of course. The rest of my TF made Mili easily, all ships except Yamato (which also took a heavy penetrating hit) are undamaged. We have spotted enough carriers to estimate the enemy strenght about 700 or more aircraft and nearly 1/3 should be torpedo bombers with a torp range of four. Thinking about 150+ torp bombers that can be escorted by hundreds of Hellcats make it even more absurd (for me) that I´m being called gamey to use my BBs as a "bait" when I have them at a base with a level 4 airfield that can field 200 Tonies (of which probably not more than 110 would launch anyway).

and hey ho, due to the enemy carriers being closer to Makin today, our bombers at Kwajalein are now exactly as far from the carriers as they are from the invasion TFs at Makin (which we want to attack). Needless to say that our piecmeal strikes go after the carriers... The fact that we have 100 Zeroes together with 80 bombers doesn´t mean anyhting as the many enemy TFs trigger totally useless strikes... amazingly few Hellcats on Cap, so few that a massive strike could have easily punished that.

those are strikes from Majuro against the invasion TFs again, Majuro is 8 hexes from Makin and 9 hexes away from the enemy´s carriers. Range of the bombers set to 8... I bet none of the AKs that were hit here will sink...

after getting a couple of messages of my bombers failing to locate the enemy carrier TFs, this strike went in... needless to say that 16 Zeroes were enough to really do something, nevertheless more than dozen of our fast Frances bombers managed to get into torp range of the carriers and put a torp into CV Enterprise. No follow on explosions and unfortunately 3/4 of the bombers went after BBs instead of further attacking the CV. What really was impressing was the enemy flak fire, as bomber after bomber fell victim to enemy shipborne flak. If we would launch concentrated attacks into this hex we really could have hurt the enemy CVs but I´m not keen on losing a hell a lot of my bombers when the enemy can´t achieve much with his invasion anyway...

last of the attacks on the invasion TFs, probably two LSTs sunk. There were still ground troops on the transports but none of the invasion TFs unloaded today. This can only mean that the enemy has given up after one day. I expected to see the enemy picking up his troops and running after this turn...

as you can see, the enemy didn´t attack with his troops on Makin at all this turn. The loss of Mutsu is a tragedy, it wouldn´t have happened if the enemy carriers wouldn´t have moved closer but that´s war, we can´t keep on inflicting heavy losses on the enemy without having to suffer at all forever. The loss of bombers was also high due to our piecemeal strike on the carriers but the Majuro daitais are nearly undamaged. The damage dished out this turn was not bad at all and the invasion of Makin is already a failure. At least two enemy BBs are heavily damaged and not yet safe in port, half a dozen cruisers were sunk, a dozen DDs sunk, probably a dozen AKs sunk too with more being damaged. The invasion troops won´t achieve anything on Makin and are due to being evacuated again. Estimated time to see them recover is at least three months, which would be needed to prep for another target anyway. By then it will be early 44 and we would still be in a good position. 4000+ enemy av are fighting their defensive battles in Australia, so there won´t be much left in terms of strong ground forces to do a major invasion sometime soon.

BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

And then this PBEM ended (again). Miller sent me his last reply telling me that his lack of ground troops will force him to wave the white flag as I will get more and more ground troops while there will only be something like 15 major LCUs coming in as reinforcement for the Allied while I could also use the troops from Russia to garisson my islands. Well, I get a lot of LCUs but can´t do much with the restricted units from Russia, other than to garisson the continent. Buying out 4 or 5 divs per year is possible though, would mean 3 until mid 44.

I guess Miller and me agree to not agree on the fact if it´s gamey to station my BBs at Mili where I also have 200 Tonies while the Allied can have 300+ fighters (Corsairs and crappy stuff like that ) at PM or any other base that would have been seized. I´ve said it earlier that it doesn´t make sense to keep on arguing about things in the game, you just have to agree on them just from the start or due to having the same oppinion anyway. As soon as you are in the arguing stuff about everything the game will just end, as do most of the PBEMs anyway.

It was a fun game and Miller was a very reliable opponent and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for that Paul.

I have now to either search for an opponent to take over the Allied command (for the third time) or having this game end. Don´t know, guess I will take a sleep over it.

Anyway, thanks to Paul for playing and thanks to the readers for following and posting on the AAR.

I would almost like to take over just to see the kind of havoc wreaked on the Allies

But I'm afraid I might know too much from following this thread so closely, and I'm not too great with the allies anyway.

Bigbaba sent me a pm a couple of minutes after I posted that the Allied commander gave away command. So this game will now continue (again ) with Bigbaba as Allied commander.
