I'm sure you too are watching the results of AE campaigns and taking a look at the ground combat model. I certainly haven't seen anything this ridiculous from it yet.

yes I am and Iīm 100% sure that it is an improvement as in many other areas. Though there also havenīt been those "we have no supply and no heavy weapons and still kick a$$" - Armies that were rushing through the map, beating down level 9 forts at will without taking heavy losses, while on the other side, when being on the defense, killing off thousands of fully supplied and highly exp troops with loads of heavy weapons.

In WITPīs stupid ground combat model itīs just like if it would be an advantage if youīre out of supply (or undersupplied) and have no heavy weapons. Heck, those troops have been out of supply for so long that all their heavy weapons are gone and they still kick a$$. While they couldnīt do it early in the game when they had full supply and all their heavy weapons. Doesnīt that stink? Of course, I can be completely wrong and the existing multipliers of WITPīs ground combat model are just fine and you didnīt need supplies or heavy weapons in WWII for ground attacks against heavily fortified positions. Sticks and knifes must have worked just fine.

Don't get too totally excited. AE does use the same "model" as WITP - at least by my definition of the term. We did completely rewrite the loops for efficiency and this actually threw the casualties off, so we had to fix that. And the "fix" process involved extensive testing and adjusting by a team which including a very experienced SME who eventually - after many weeks, was able to report that we were now producing plausible results. So AE is different. But it is not a complete "green field" rewrite. But it does include a substantive rework of the existing model. Some don't like it. But so far, I find it better. But then, I was in the Artillery, during my time in the chow line (as was said Subject Matter Expert!!! )

From what Iīve seen so far it seems to look better in AE than in WITP. At least itīs more to my taste, but itīs like Iīve said, I havenīt seen those 300.000 troops vs. 500.000 troops battles yet or those out of supply Armies with 10.000 assault value attacks in AE yet.

I canīt say I have ever been a "fan" of WITPīs ground combat model but in four years of playing it has never pissed me off as much as in tis campaign with the ground warfare in China and what out of supply and out of heavy weapon Chinese Armies can do due to the magic shock attack order. While this doesnīt work for the Japanese with supply and with heavy weapons. lol. And not to forget that 500.000 Japanese troops (12.000 av) with all available "tank" units and all but 5 combat eng units werenīt able to do anything against 3.000 Russian av (with base exp and half of the units have been forced to retreat more than just once) behind level 9 forts in a clear hex. Oh wait, my troops were mostly 90+ exp (with many at 99 already) but that didnīt help either. Taking 20.000+ casualties in one turn and the enemy taking 1.000 shreds your 12.000 av to 6.000 in three attacks. Then you canīt reduce the forts of course (because 1.000+ combat eng are disabled in two turns) and the Allied build level 8 to 9 forts in three turns anyway.

Oh yes, Iīm 100% sure that AE has improved the ground combat model.

More of the same as the last months... weīre building up our defensive positions and my airforce is further increasing their (already high) experience. And many ground and air reinforcements are arriving. Nearly every couple of days we get new daitais, sentais or hikotais and big inf units. But else not much is happening... no idea where the rest of the US CV fleet is hiding at the moment and thereīs no sign of any invasion attempt. And I wouldnīt recommend an invasion without proper preparation. This went wrong too often for the Allied already.

next turn my troops should enter Kweiyang hopefully. It takes us forever to march on the road into this hex it seems, my Army was marching at a speed of 7 miles a day... awfully slow. If you use the "follow unit order" your troops most often march at half of their usual speed, so if it isnīt needed, donīt do it...

When we will have arrived we will see what the Chinese can do against us. Guess they will kill us off with their sticks...

It's really sad to see this game evolve in this way, be it the Chinese stupid stuff or bigbaba's confusing strategy.

yeah, itīs sad indeed. Itīs the only WITP PBEM Iīve got going and with the chance to get into the really late stages of the war Iīm not keen to really drop it. If I would be convinced that AE is already in a state to start a long term PBEM then I would do that, but as it is now, for me AE isnīt patched up high enough to really get a long term PBEM going. Thatīs no complaint, it was the same with WITP which has reached a state in 1.5 that was already very good.

big strike on my mountain island up North, the hit rate was a pain to see... level 4 airfield and 142 bombers achieve 180 hits on the runway alone... the damned Allied long range bombers must all have a dangerous high experience... no wonder after 3 years of war and nothing that really could stop them so far. But more than a dozen were lost today and this strike isnīt really concerning for me anyway.

we have spotted one big TF sitting in a hex 360 miles South of Perth. The shown position of the TF in the hex told me that there are several TFs in the hex and therefore I sent in this sub to investigate the situation. The result was an ASW attack but the sub got away unharmed which was quite surprising...

several TFs South of Perth? Something going on?

the enemy TFs are still in the same hex and I also kept my sub there as I wanted to have more info what is going on there. No sub sightings by Allied float or carrier based aircraft so I guess there arenīt any carriers or other capitol ships. Donīt know why there are several big Allied TFs being parked South of Perth. Waiting for other TFs to go North for an invasion? Reinforcing India? Or coming from India (but why parking them there then?). Not sure yet what to think about it. One medium sized AK takes a torp and my sub evaded all attacks. Nice one. No troops aboard and no APs spotted yet.

this is what is making me so upset all the time. The Chinese Armies are completely trash as they are now, they have less av, less heavy weapons, nearly no supply (or are completely out of supply) and must have a morale that has to be in the range between 0 and 1 on average. And they still get wonderful adjusted avs ALL the time. In this case they get a completely ridicoulos adjusted av that is a trippled base av. LOL, how stupid is it when I get my av halved while being fully supplied and sitting behind level 9 forts or sitting in an urban hex like Chungking?

Iīm repeating myself. Anyway, the ground combat model is BS and nothing proves it more than this ongoing ground war against Chinese hordes that should be nearly completely useless...

the enemy is bombing my stack in the mountains one hex South of Chungking. The enemy has started to move something like a dozen units out of Chungking to the West, reinforcing the all mighty Chinese Army at Kweiyang. Guess in two weeks we will face 4000+ out of supply av in Kweiyang that will then shock attack us out of the hex again...

so what about this result? If you carefully look at your combat reports you will get a lot of intel all the time. In this case it clearly tells me one fact: those Chinese troops have nearly no supply or are already completely out of supply. Last turn there were 130k troops and 230 guns defending the hex and now only 54k are bombarding with 174 guns. So far so good, but they donīt cause any casualties while they take damage from counterfire. Those troops at Kweiyang are absolutely combat ineffective (sorry, thatīs what they SHOULD be) but they still got an adjusted av ov 7.000+ against my attack yesterday. How stupid... how stupid...

The good news of the day is once again announced by our aircraft R&D. The Frank has been advanced by one month again, now due to 6/44. With nearly 600 factories in R&D I expect this advanced IJAAF fighter going online in 5/44. Would be three months earlier than the default date and one month earlier I had initially expected it. Thatīs very good news... but else thereīs not much to report...

huge strike out of Townsville (one hex range). Donīt know what I should say about the ground casualties, perhaps should I mention that we are sitting behind level 9 forts? This is something that never really helped, despite this being said by most forum members. I never really have seen forts being of any help against air attacks or naval bombardments. If you get a nuke, you nuke the enemy, no matter if level 0 forts or level 9 forts. Forts donīt work against air attacks or nuke naval bombardments. Thank god my opponent uses Havocs en masse in those attacks, this way he loses a lot of bombers...

my troops will move out of Charter Towers soon and we will reinforce the troops that have dug in in the bases on the North coast. Thousands of av can be moved out of Australia then. 8000+ av are sitting at Charter Towers alone.

note that the enemy has lost 7 B-24J to ops today. There were only 15 in the one hex strike against Charter Towers and I doubt that they were lost due to transfer. So what happened? The recently torpedoed AK South of Perth was reported sunk today so I guess this AK was carrying those bombers. Could mean that an understrenght B-24J bomber squadron went down with it. That would be nice. The TFs South of Perth have moved on though, no idea where they are now...

we finally have decided to take Merauke... small unit was sent there to take the empty base. We will build it up a bit to support the defense of Thursday Island. But with the Allied evacuation of Port Moresby I doubt that the Allied are thinking about coming back to New Guinea anyway. Lol

Russian troops at Blagoveshchensk keep starving to death. What really wonders me is the fact that bigbaba hasnīt used his Chinese tactic of ordering those out of supply troops to shock attack me. With the stupid results the last months they could have a wonderful chance to achieve something with their av perhaps only being halved while mine could get divided by 4 as we of course are fully supplied... and having full supply is a disadvantage in Gary Grigsby world...

Kweiyangīs av dropped by 7 in one day and 1200 troops less... also 6 guns less in one day... as we havenīt destroyed any guns the last two days, how much more prove do I need that those Chinese troops are completely out of supply? But hey, for those who havenīt noticed, the Chinese got an adjusted av of 7.000+ three days ago... boahhhhh....

the only interesting thing of the day is this:

daily recon of Perth shows dozens of subs at this base now. Does this mean the Allied will start a sub offensive again? We havenīt spot a sub for months, one of the many Allied faults IMO. Weīve got dozens of modern PCs now and I will use my IJAAF bombers the same way the Allied used hundreds of their bombers in the Pacific. Mass them in one place and sink every sub you spot... the only thing that prevents me from it is the fact that my sentais get 50% damaged from flying 70% nav search. Same goes for my fighters on Cap, still the BS about my aircraft are getting damaged for no obvious reason. I know the difference between reality and WITP but in WITP you should be able to fly a high CAP or nav search level daily without wrecking your aircraft.

all we do are training raids...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and the stupidity in China of course...

Ground combat at Kweiyang

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 284157 troops, 2987 guns, 3371 vehicles, Assault Value = 6279

Defending force 119899 troops, 158 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2591

Japanese max assault: 5420 - adjusted assault: 3678

Allied max defense: 2487 - adjusted defense: 9101

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 8)

Japanese ground losses:
3812 casualties reported
Guns lost 205
Vehicles lost 49

Allied ground losses:
5397 casualties reported
Guns lost 9

so what about this BS? the enemy has laughable 158 guns, NO supply, sits behind level 8 forts and gets an adjusted av of 9.000+??? How stupid can this ground combat model really be? What upsets me the most is once again the fact that hundreds of combat eng canīt reduce another fort level. How ridicoulos. We took less casualties than the defender you might say, but hey, if we wonīt be able to reduce the forts then all the reinforcements from Chungking will make it impossible to achieve anything. Heck, we canīt achieve anything even without facing a reinforced Chinese Army that is fighting with sticks, knifes and stones... STUPID ground combat model...

completely stupid...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Merauke

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 860 troops, 6 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 33

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese max assault: 28 - adjusted assault: 29

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 29 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Merauke base !!!

all of New Guinea is now in Japanese hands...

We probably wonīt ever take out China against undersupplied Chinese, even though we could do it when they were still at full supply and we had halve the experience... just seems like out of supply gives you a negative negative multiplier which makes it a positive then. Either this, or a bug, or Mr. G failed miserably in mathematics... because otherwise the enemy canīt get an adjusted av 4 times higher than the base av...

one week until April 44... a very bad date for us. On 4/1/44 the Allied will start getting 150!! B-29 each month. This will bring the war into a new stage as everything within 24 hexes of a level 6 airfield can be completely wrecked if not heavily Capped... but this isnīt possible due to the oh so wonderful feature of seeing 50% of the Japanese fighters being damaged from flying Cap at 40%... nice undocumented feature... and BS...

my training bases arenīt all full anymore with many daitais/sentais flown out to the front again to wait for the Allied. Weīve got at least a dozen very, very high experienced daitais left at training bases (I donīt need them elsewhere) and theyīve all reached 90+ exp already. The IJNAF daitais will be act as replacements for shot down carrier based pilots and the IJAAF sentais (Tony) will be upgraded to Frank elite sentais. Elite sounds funny in the case of my airforce as the non elite front line units are also all in the range between 80 (few of them) and 85 (most of them).

the stupid combat modifiers still give the Chinese a trippled adjusted av... this is soooo stupid...

Petropavlask is nuked again... once again, more hits than bombers... a nuke so to say... Iīd like to mention that supply hits do NOT cause 1% of the baseīs supplies being destroyed. This attack has cost me not even 2.000 supplies. Would it have been 21% then I would have lost more than 8000 in this attack alone... itīs just not true that a supply hit destroys one % of the supplies... one bomber is lost and thatīs it...

what makes my situation worse is the fact that a) the Japanese rarely get attacks on more than one or two ground units per turn and b) always the same stupid unit is attacked (and NO itīs NOT the strongest unit in the stack)

in the meantime, Iīve got three bases filled with bombers but so far only one has launched strikes... great...

two of our subs have spotted several TFs in the Melbourne area moving West. Iīm pretty sure those TFs are heading for Perth, they of course could be also heading to India. I doubt this is an amphibious armada moving towards Australiaīs North coast though. I have subs in all important areas on the map where the enemy could form up invasion TFs and those two Glen equipped subs near Tasmania gave me some interesting intel this turn. Will keep an eye on the happenings around Perth and Southern Australia...

bigbaba has moved British Liberators to China. Hmm, didnīt know they could reach Chungking. Oh well, they only burn precious Chinese supply. Even though I have to say that with the recapture of Chengtu and us being kicked out of Chungking, the Chinese supply situation has become better. 300 supplies from Chengtu and 300 supplies from Chungking more a day than a month ago. The Chinese should get something like 1200 supplies each day, not enough to feed all their troops though. But hey, they donīt need supplies or weapons anyway, a shock attack works just fine and on the defense the out of supply troops get adjusted avs a real life commander could only dream about...

out of 150 bombers you get 100 to attack ground targets and those 100 then attack the same targets again and again and again... the two other bases launched no a2g attack...

and the Chinese keep on killing us off at will... the didnīt get their av trippled, but I guess if they get it doubled thatīs enough, considering the fact that they donīt have any supplies... zzzz.... out of four attacks so far, only two reduced a fort level and for what reason ever, we werenīt able to reduce one this turn... hundreds of combat eng just donīt help at all for the Japanese in 44. I could reduce those forts with a third of those combat engineers in 42 for sure. But hey, I donīt know the code, I can only speak of what I SEE and I SEE that in 44, Japanese aircraft get damaged en masse from flying Cap or nav search and that the 99 exp ground units have no combat value at all. Must be some hardcoded features I donīt know about...

itīs "funny" anyway as my empire is ruling the map and the Allied have done nothing to me that could justify a decrease in quality. Neither within my ground troops, nor within my airforce...

must be bad karma...

To describe this turn the best, those two smileys match best:

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/01/44

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 24,127

Japanese Ships
SS I-21, hits 24, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
DD Bennett
DD Bell
DD Beale

but we start off with an easily sunk IJN sub... a destroyer in the same hex as a sub... glug glug glug... this is near Tasmania where we daily spot lots of big TFs going West. Even though we lose this sub, the intel we got already is enough to put us in a state of high alert. If we spot more than hundred ships over the last couple of days moving towards Perth then this means the Allied are up to something...

knowing that LCUs moving out of Charter Towers immedietely atract massed bomber strikes, this time Iīve set 20 AA rgt/bgd to move one hex out of Charter Towers to take position on the railline. And voila, as predictable as my opponent is , wave after wave attacks my flak trap. You may think that Japanese flak is powerful... well, it isnīt. The reason we hit the enemy hard is because this is an attack on LCUs and in Gary Grigsbyīs world, flak is five times more effective if on the move with other ground troops, whereas itīs not as effective if at a base in prepared positions.

what a pity bigbaba went back to 10.000ft attack alt instead of 3.000ft... unfortunately (for him), none of his bases was clouded in and strike after strike went in... muahhhhhhaaahahahaaa...

in the end the fields around Charter Towers were full of burning Allied bomber wrecks... I guess this is the best result ever achieved by me, playing as the Japanese PBEM. bigbaba stated that Japanese flak is very powerful in this mod, I answered that it only depends on the number of units. In fact, my flak is nearly useless, if you have a dozen base forces somewhere youīve got to be really lucky if you are able to take down more than one bomber out of 200 due to the so high durability of Allied bombers. A couple of Allied base forces completely shred IJA bombers to pieces though, if you dare to attack an Allied base.

This turn was very funny to watch. Itīs not a decisive attack and losing more than 100 bombers in one day is nowhere hurting the Allied but I guess it has an effect. bigbaba will think twice about attacking an LCU if it moves out of Charter Towers.

I was nearly shocked about so much action this turn. Weīve spotted occasional LRCAP over Kweiyang a couple of turns earlier already and today our incoming strikes meet enemy fighters. Even though we have nearly 100 Tonies set to escort Changshaīs bombers, only one sentai shows up with the first wave and both my fighters and bombers are hit hard. Especially the Spitfire VIII proves to be vastly superior to the Tony. The first round went to the Allied...

here comes the second wave and as it is always, defending Cap gets hit hard if there are follow on strikes. The enemy did NOT bounce us and this lead to a disaster within the enemy fighters. The Chinese Warhawks were dead meat, they suffered 17 fighters shot down for not a single kill. The four Tonies shot down all went to the Spitfire pilots (1 kill for the Vb and 3 for the VIII). The damage done to the Chinese troops is probably completely useless once again as it doesnīt matter if you disrupt one or two of the completely out of supply troops when there are three dozen of them. One of my Tony sentais is out of the war for two months again, a third of the sentaiīs pilots died today. Hopefully the enemy lost some pilots too but I donīt have much hope on that as most of them probably were saved due to having fought over their own base.

Like Iīve said, so much action, I wasnīt used to...

In total, we nearly achieved a 6:1 in aircraft kills today. Not bad for early April 44?

Ground combat at Kweiyang

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 291138 troops, 2647 guns, 3338 vehicles, Assault Value = 6082

Defending force 113664 troops, 50 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2856

Japanese max assault: 10960 - adjusted assault: 5448

Allied max defense: 2474 - adjusted defense: 4409

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 7)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 6

Allied ground losses:
2591 casualties reported

as we seem not to be able to reduce a fort level with our combat engineers Iīve ordered a shock attack, while being well aware of the fact that the unsupplied enemy stick equipped army will kick our arse. We reduced a fort level and suffered for doing so. We can order one more attack and then my Army is exhausted and has to retreat. Very well done. With this ground combat model I have yet another Army being shredded by an enemy that has no heavy arms and is completely out of supply. And this for over a year already. While we could kick the Chinese around at will in 42 (when they had full supply and lots of heavy weapons), some hardcoded BS seems to prevent us from achieving anything.

The situation now is that I will do one more attack (hoping to reduce at least another fort level) and then retreat our exhausted troops (mostly down to 80% combat readiness) into a base South of Kweiyang to recover. In the meantime I will have moved in another 1000!!! combat engineers (those that were 100% useless at Irkutsk against 2500 Russian av ) and another 2000 av from Southern Area Army units. Yes, Iīm planning to use Southern Area Army units in China. While I rushed through the Chinese in 42 without the need of Southern Area Army units, I do need them now as the Chinese are fighting better with sticks than with heavy weapons. And you donīt need supply to use a stick...

Thereīs only some positive things at the moment (at least I think there are). As the enemy has been starving for over a year already I doubt that there are a lot of engineer squads left and when I look at how long it takes them to repair their level 4 airfield from one attack then I guess they wonīt ever be able to build up the forts again as I wonīt ever let the airfield get repaired again. And as I can see a steady decrease of Chinese av (means they are completely out of supply and starving to death) this means they wonīt recover their disabled squads and while I will bring up my troops to 100% strenght again, the enemy wonīt. It will be a long way to go, but I can guarantee you that at some point we will be victorious. I will get another 2000 av from reinforcements the next 45 days and they will all head to China to gain combat experience. This will give me fresh troops to rotate my worn down units and this also will bring up my new unitsī experience levels. With the situation on all other fronts at the moment, I donīt see a need of those reinforcements being sent to the Pacific front anytime soon. I guess our main problem is the fact that it takes us 20 attacks until we will have brought down the forts from 9 to 0 and 20 attacks means 100.000-150.000 casualties (mostly disablements for the attacker).

Japanese assault odds: 9 to 1 (fort level 9)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Trimcomalee base !!!

Japanese para units are still in use and they are once again highly succesful. Noticed that bigbaba moved out all his units from Trimcomalee (including the STATIC unit - guess the 9.1 inch CD guns that make the unit static have been destroyed earlier) and so my paras took an empty base. With the Allied evacuations that were going out from Ceylon I doubt that thereīs a lot left at Colombo. Will move in more troops and take out the whole island.

All in all a day with lots of action (considering how boring this PBEM is) and some highly succesful actions too.
