Op report for the aerial engagments over Kweiyang today. We have a new leader in our top pilot list, itīs 4/44 and we now have two pilots with 15 kills. Sounds funny, doesnīt it. In stock, I would have 10 pilots with over 50 kills easily I guess, so looking at the overall picture, A2A in this Nikmod version works far better than stock. Unfortunetely there are also more and more British/Australian aces flying in China and due to me having missed the chance to take them all out sometime mid 42 when they were low experienced and flying Hurricanes, we now face squadrons flying Spitfires (we can deal with the Vb but the VIII is a killer) and pilots that probably have experience in the 80s due to having flown lots of ground strikes when they were still flying their Hurricanes.

Unfortunately, 12 months ago, Iīve thought the Chinese would be out of the war, until they started to kick thousands of Japanese av around, when we got our adjusted avs halved for being in an URBAN hex. I havenīt finished them off and havenīt put a lot of effort into it the last months but this has changed now. I will use the hammer again...

Good news of the day, R&D of the Frank once again was succesful and the fighter is now due to 5/44. We have already advanced the production date of our new IJAAF fighter 3 months and this is very good news. This is only the second or third time I was able to advance an aircraft by three months in all my PBEM campaigns and Iīve done a lot of turns in the last five years. Thereīs the rumour that you canīt advance it by more than 3 months so we will see. Perhaps we will get the first fighters within this month, if not, then the first unit will be equipped with this fine aircraft within 4,5 weeks.

Iīm tempted to wait 7 weeks until I knock out the remaining enemy aircraft in China. I guess we could reduce our losses by at least 30% if we swap out the Tonies with Franks. I will occasionally bomb Kweiyang to keep the airfield damaged and will take on the enemyīs fighters when we will have three or four Frank sentais. This will also be a good test, as fighting highly experienced Spitfire VIII groups will show us pretty fast if the Frank is competive or not.

now this was surprising... a convoy that has brought some troops to Madras was attacked by hordes of British and US fighter bombers. The enemy must have an awful bad experience as they missed one after another. I had no escorts in this TF and I thought my transports would be pretty much dead meat, but only a Beaufighter achieved a single 500lb bomb hit. That was really amazing to me. The TF will be four hexes further out in the Indian ocean and perhaps wonīt be spotted anymore tomorrow.

more and more Chinese units enter Kweiyang. Weīve spotted more than another dozen units marching South into Kweiyang. Guess in the end we will face more than 4000 Chinese av from units that are out of supply but still get an adjusted av ov more than 6.000. Just look at the laughable number of guns. There are over 40 Chinese units at Kweiyang already. Guess the average Chinese corps that is fighting me has something like one or two 80mm mortars... but donīt forget their sticks...

two out of three bases in China launched ground strikes, no enemy fighters present anymore. Looks like the losses within the enemy fighters were high enough to keep bigbaba from flying more LRCAP over Kweiyang...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and the highlight of this turn...

Day Air attack on TF at 3,69

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 70
D4Y Judy x 77
B6N Jill x 130

Allied aircraft
Corsair IV x 14

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5 Zeke: 2 destroyed, 2 damaged
B6N Jill: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Corsair IV: 14 destroyed

Allied Ships
CVE Shah, Bomb hits 3, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
DD Relentless, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
AK Samphill, Bomb hits 1
AK Samoa
AK Samsurf, Torpedo hits 1

Allied ground losses:
22 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x B6N Jill launching torpedoes at 200 feet
3 x D4Y Judy bombing at 2000 feet

Iīve spotted a big TF (also spotted CVE Shah) when it was formed at Karachi. It was spotted at Karachi for at least two or three days and then it was spotted heading straight to the West moving away from Karachi. It then wasnīt hard to figure out that this TF would move South towards Australia (I was sure it wouldnīt be an invasion TF for Southern India and I was also sure it wouldnīt go to Ceylon as he would not dare to do this again). Hmmm.... letīs see. A TF made up by more than two dozen AKs or APs, probably with some DDs and a CVE that was spotted. Leaving Karachi, going West, then South, max speed two hexes per phase. Means that 2.5-3 weeks later this TF can be caught somewhere West of Timor. Send your carriers out early enough and you catch the TF somewhere West of Java. In this case we caught it West of Soerabaja in the middle of the Indian Ocean. This TF was twice spotted the last two days but for an unkknown reason my carriers did not launch a single strike. This must have alerted bigbaba as the TF then changed course from going South to going South West. And today we launch a full strike in the morning... so far so good...

but what do you think how I ticked out in front of my display when I saw 200 bombers going after the CVE when it only took 20 to sink it. Means I watched some 180 bombers failing to locate the CVE and returning home when there are at least three dozen other ships in this TF just nearby. Iīm sorry, I know I used the word "stupid" quite often in this AAR already, but honestly, how stupid is it that a full strike turns back when they see a CVE sinking and leave the other ships alone? Stupid game design and one of the many oversights. It has been changed in AE I was told so this is one of the many improvements. Itīs great when there are many people with common sense involved in a project, there were obviously not so many involved when WITP was designed. Or perhaps something like what is happening in this attack only strikes me. Perhaps Iīm just a dumbass...

what has been interesting also is the fact that the CVE launched 14 out of 14 available fighters, a 100% Cap rate as usual. Now I donīt know how this TF really looks like, but I guess the CVE is the only ship that has an air search radar (if it even has one). Nevertheless we see the usual Allied 100% Cap. The reason that those CVE Corsairs (probably newly arrived) had an experience of something like 50-60 and my Zeke pilots were above 85 made it a pretty one sided engagement. We lost two Zeke pilots though.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 3,69

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 14
B6N Jill x 18

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
CVE Shah, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x B6N Jill launching torpedoes at 200 feet

more of the same...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 3,69

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 9
D4Y Judy x 23
B6N Jill x 15

Japanese aircraft losses
D4Y Judy: 4 damaged

Allied Ships
CVE Shah, on fire, heavy damage
AK Empire Mandalay, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AK Samharle, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DD Quality

Allied ground losses:
22 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x D4Y Judy bombing at 2000 feet
3 x B6N Jill launching torpedoes at 200 feet

wow, we actually bomb three other ships. 25 bombers nevertheless turned back because Shah already sunk...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and the afternoon phase...

Day Air attack on TF at 3,69

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 85
D4Y Judy x 89
B6N Jill x 137

Japanese aircraft losses
B6N Jill: 2 damaged

Allied Ships
CVE Shah, on fire, heavy damage
DD Quality, Bomb hits 1, on fire
DD Redoubt
DD Rapid, Bomb hits 2, on fire
AK Samcalia, Torpedo hits 1
DD Quilliam, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AK Samfield, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
AK Samtampa, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Allied ground losses:
22 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x B6N Jill launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x D4Y Judy bombing at 2000 feet

this time only 180 instead of 200 bomber tried to attack the already sunk CVE Shah... SOOOOOO STUPID!!!!!!!! There are so many deficiencies in this game itīs everytime again a world wonder that so many hard core players have been playing this game for soooo long...

so the situation is as follows... we meet an enemy TF (weīve spotted dozens of ships), launch two full strikes and sink one CVE and one AK and thatīs it. This not because all of our elite bomber crews missed their targets, no, they decided to turn around because itīs not worth to attack AKs that are fully loaden with troops. Instead of completely annihilating this TF, we achieve NOTHING. I give a damn about sinking a lonely British CVE. But itīs once again a good prove how well the game works. There are so many borked routines itīs just a shame. If this CVE would not have been in this TF, I bet 90% of the ships would now be sunk or in sinking condition. If you know that and want to take every advantage you can then this is a good way to reduce the damage as much as possible, the worst case for you is to lose a CVE. I doubt that this was the reason for including this CVE though, he just wanted to bring it down to Australia to work together with the US CVEs. But the result of having this CVE in the TF is devasting... devastating for th outcome in regards of damaged done to the Allied.

Today we used up 23% of our max sorties, which means we can launch such strikes for ONE more day. As soon as your max sorties reach 50% you launch piece meal strikes, most of the time not worth it. 500 bomber sorties in one day against ONE single TF and all we get is one CVE and a rubbish AK. What do I expect tomorrow? I expect to see the DDs in the TF moving away at flank speed, being out of range tomorrow. The AKs will scatter and we will catch a couple of them and thatīs it. It only depends on how many TFs bigbaba will form. I was hit by a stupid game routine (target routine) and if bigbaba forms three dozen single ship TFs then I will be hit by exactly this stupid game routine again as the engine just canīt handle it.

Even in real life, this TF would have been completely annihilated when 500 high experienced CV based bomber would have attacked three dozen AKs coupled with a single CVE and some DDs. Even the Zeroes would have strafed the AKs in real life I guess but I canīt blame the game not doing it as this is just not how it was programmed. Even if the Zeroes would dive down to strafe something, they would all turn back without doing anything because they would target the CVE that was sunk at 7 am, while hundreds of bombers still search for it at 4 pm.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kweiyang

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 281257 troops, 2362 guns, 3286 vehicles, Assault Value = 5593

Defending force 128747 troops, 63 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3361

Japanese max assault: 6629 - adjusted assault: 2414

Allied max defense: 3036 - adjusted defense: 4165

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 6)

Japanese ground losses:
6384 casualties reported
Guns lost 115
Vehicles lost 75

Allied ground losses:
1920 casualties reported
Guns lost 9

to top off the day, we launch another attack at Kweiyang, seeing another one of the stupid results we are already used to. NO fort level was reduced (again!!!) and our adjusted av once again was a joke, just like the adjusted av of out of supply Chinese is a complete joke. I miss the words in English that I need to describe how WRONG this ground combat model is as we are speaking of troops that are OUT OF SUPPLY and WITHOUT ANY HEAVY WEAPONS LEFT!!! This is just plain wrong and Mr. Gīs main advantage obviously is the fact that he desings niche games and the competitors (if there are any) donīt do it any better.

Those Chinese (in fact no matter if Chinese, Japanese, British, Russian, American, German or whatever) troops should have nearly no combat value at all. Giving them a 25% combat effectiveness due to being 100% out of supply is just stupid as this stupid factor still then gives them an adjusted av that is higher than their base av. And itīs not just stupid, it makes everything that "officials" posted on the forum ad absurdum. OR, mathematics are just different in the US compared to Europe. With European mathematics itīs quite hard to achieve those adjusted avs if the multipliers are what we have been told for five years already. We can only shake our head as the code will be kept hidden anyway, thus making it easier to complain but youīll never know what really went wrong during coding (obviously a lot).

Time to retreat, rest and recover, bomb the airfield to prevent fort building, wait for another 300 av being starved, move in with 8.000 av again, get shot to pieces by even more starved defenders, reduce another three or four fort levels, move out, the whole circle again and in three months I will take out Kweiyang. Then move on to Kunming and start at step 1 as there will be again level 9 forts and a couple of thousand completely starved (but fully combat ready) Chinese av.

and thatīs it... see below what we have spotted. And what we spot doesnīt mean thatīs all that is there. Iīm sure my funny opponent created more than two dozen single ship TFs... that sucks...

why I call him my "funny opponent"? Because when he seeks a PBEM opponent then he wants to have this house rule (copied out of one of his opponent wanted threads):

no 1 ship TF-spamm to abuse the inability of the game engine when it comes on air attacks on multiple TFs what results in 100 bombers attacking one single AK for example

this is FUNNY for me, because one one side he wants to have such a hr (not valid in this PBEM) and on the other side heīs using one of the numero uno game exploits to get away and compensate weak game play.

In this PBEM there is a hr about not forming dozens of INVASION TFs to exploit the weak target routine and as you have to be a lawyer all the time when you challenge someone, this of course means he has NOT broken any hr. Except the fact that heīs constantly breaking the hr about aircraft stacking limits. I can only repeat myself, would this PBEM not already be at this stage of the war and wouldnīt there be the chance to see an amazing campaign through the late years (considering the moves of my opponent I have doubts about that already anyway) I would long have stopped it. Oh well, itīs just another thing I have to swallow. Everyone plays how he thinks he should play, if itīs a good move or a bad move, thatīs something the AAR readers have to judge.

For me, sending a fat troop loaden TF (that has been spotted several times) down the Indian ocean without any serious covering force (he has enough CVEs and CVs to cover a troop convoy through this territory (he just has to use them) is just weak game play in every aspect. Of course exploiting the engine and forming dozens of single ship TFs that then are all going IN THE SAME HEX INTO THE SAME DIRECTION is just more of a prove of weak game play IMO. This what he may consider "scattering" is just a joke when he keeps all his ships together in the same hex moving together (perhaps even following each other ). If he scatters his convoy and send out all the ships in a dozen different directions, moving 4 hexes a day can (perhaps) be considered scattering in game terms but what he is doing is just trying to get away with weak game play and a clear exploit of the engine. And the "funny" thing is that he even knows it. Oh well... itīs all just hot air and nothing more, the Allied are trashed anyway and it will be a pleasure to kick their arse during their next invasion. But perhaps we will then meet two dozen CVEs following each other in the same hex in single ship TFs and all are loaded up with Corsairs to have a 720 Corsair Cap. Oh wait, thereīs the stacking rule for carrier based ac...

Totally untrue Castor, planes can be R&D'ed much more than 3 months, because of a now "known" but previously unknown exploit, which I didn't realise until I had it happen to me, I got one plane more than a year advanced (Nemo's EA mod)...

As to your opponents play, while it is very very questionable and pretty much wrong IMO, I guess the positive way to look at it is that he fears you, knows he isn't as good as you and must act like this to defeat you even though he is playing as the Allies

Good luck

Hi

didnīt know about this bug and hopefully Iīm not doing anything to have it kick in. At the moment the R&D is at 614 ac per month (total production will be at something like 650-700) and this lead to three months acceleration so far. So perhaps it will even come online within the next weeks. Never achieved anything better than three months though and I also have never heard about a bug (thank god).

I havenīt heard from my opponent for over a week. He told me heīs moving house but he would have his inet connection back within just a few days. I guess it takes longer or otherwise heīs dropped the game. I will wait another week for a reply, otherwise Iīll look for someone to take over the Allied.

Hi Paul

hehe, why do you think that?

Perhaps a solution would be to swap sides? Me taking over the Allied (and either proving that Iīm just a loud dumbass or proving what I think in terms of the Allied are still far from being defeated) and someone else taking over the Japanese in perfect condition. Now that would be interesting too. Of course I would like to play on as the Japanese as I want to get the fruit Iīve planted.

edit: just rethought what I have written and this is of course BS as noone would take over the Japanese when I would know the password. Silly me...

cheers

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/07/44

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Kweiyang , at 41,35

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
403 casualties reported

Airbase hits 31
Airbase supply hits 14
Runway hits 196

Aircraft Attacking:
15 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 6000 feet

we launch a massive strike in China. Combined strikes out of three different bases, range 6 hexes. As you can see, a massive amount of bombers has been moved into China, problem is that with the given situation and how the game is modelled, it doesnīt help me at all in regards of fighting the Chinese out of supply shock armies. All I can do is to use those bombers for anti airfield strikes to keep the Chinese from building up the forts from level 6 again. All those bombers were set to ground attacks for weeks, with no result. Either they donīt fly at all, if they fly, then only in small numbers and then they only attack two out of 40 inf units in this hex, so the effect is equally zero... The enemy units must have been completely starved down, thereīs still no flak fire from base forces. Many more units are marching down to Kweiyang so Iīm not sure if it will stay a flak free place forever. If flak shows up, then we will have to attack from higher alt, but I guess the flak units would run out of supply in short time anyway.

We will have Franks soon so if the remaining Brit/Aussie/Chinese squadrons at Chungking decide to fight us, then we will destroy them with massive strikes.

IMO itīs not worth it to use it for carrying supplies when you want to move more important troops to Australia.

well knowing that there is no real way to counter the one ship TF spam in the game, I nevertheless tried to do something, in this case trying to chase them down with cruisers. This is always what the advocates of the stupid single ship TF tactic advise if a player complains about this stupidity to exploit the engine... well, have a look at how well this works...

as you can see, itīs completely senseles... I bet my cruiser ended up in the hex with at least two dozen single ship TFs... this doesnīt mean the cruiser would attack every single TF, thereīs a max of what is attacked. Same number of ships in five different TFs and all would be attacked... once again I can only say: neither the routine for air attacks, nor the routine for naval combat can deal with single ship TF spam...

glad my opponent knows that too...

Allied Ships
AGC Blue Ridge
AK Soochow
AK Matthew Lyon

SC SC-642
MSW Whyalla
MSW Strahan
MSW Lithgow
MSW Kiama
AVD Ballard

8 hexes South West of Perth, but completely out of the shipping lanes around Australia, I-17 fired a salvo of 6 torps at AGC Blue Ridge but all torps missed the target... one near miss in return, so I shouldnīt complain, the sub lives on... I see my subs only as recon assets at this stage of the war and I would prefer if they donīt meet enemy TFs in the same hex. Perhaps I get the same chance again like near the Gilberts when bigbaba moved heavily damaged BBs around without a single DD as escort instead of heavily covering them (IIRC two then were sunk by subs and another one received further heavy damage), then I of course would use my subs offensively against the enemy again...

so in fact, I have no idea what exactly this enemy TF is doing in this hex. And when looking at the position of the TF icon in the hex, I get the free intel that there are more enemy TFs in this hex together with my sub. Are those TFs perparing for a run North or are they even preparing for an invasion? With all those big TFs that were spotted around Tasmania (heading West) I was alerted already, Emilies are flying recon over Perth daily and we havenīt spotted lots of ships there so far, so all those TFs must have headed somewhere or are still due to arriving at Perth. In any way, we are in a state of alert at the moment and I guess the enemy has to gather all his TFs at Perth to refuel anyway before he sends them out for an invasion I guess. My bet at the moment is either Northern Australia or Timor. Both places are IMO completely out of the Alliedīs possibilities and can lead to another disaster. But Iīm open to be convinced about the opposite. While I also had big troop movements to India in mind, with the big convoy bringing troops FROM India towards Australia, Iīm convinced that all those TFs wonīt move towards India.

Day Time Surface Combat at 3,81

Allied Ships
AK Samur, Shell hits 9, on fire, heavy damage

Allied ground losses:

Not just Noshiro but also Agano were dispatched from KB to hunt down some single ship TFs during the night and day. While Noshiro was completely useless during the night, Agano performed better during the day...

Day Time Surface Combat at 3,81

Japanese Ships
CL Agano

Allied Ships
AK Sammex, Shell hits 4, and is sunk

Allied ground losses:
2398 casualties reported
Vehicles lost 148

Sammex already was dead in the water and sank right after the cruiser showed up. Nice to see that we obviously sunk a big part of an armored unit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Time Surface Combat at 3,81

Japanese Ships
CL Agano, Shell hits 2

Allied Ships
AK Empire Dirk, Shell hits 9, on fire
AK Samouse , Shell hits 16, on fire, heavy damage

Allied ground losses:
443 casualties reported
Guns lost 6

Empire Dirk will surely live on but Samouse is in trouble after taking a dozen 6 inch hits... both AKs were firing back but both shells bounced off the CLīs armor... nice shooting nevertheless, must be quite hard to hit a light cruiser with a 5 inch gun on an AK from 18.000 yards...

And thatīs it for the day. We will pursue the fleeing ships for one more day, weīre only a good dozen hexes North West of Australiaīs coast and I donīt want to get "too near" to Perth. My fuel is becoming low anyway and all those single ship TFs lead to a completely exhausted carrier TF with only 20% sorties left.

as you can see, no more bombardments at Kweiyang, this is due to my orders to move all units out for R&R as my units just took too many losses against the Chinese that are just doing fine without supplies...

I once had a guy use 50 single "ship" PT boat TFs against me, I had about 12 ships including 2xOBB. I sank most of the PT boats, but took 2 torpedo hits on one of the OBB which was then sunk by airplanes since it could not get out of range of LBA. So this is why one of our house rules in our 2x2 AE game prohibits such tactics.

On plus in AE though is that the air routines can combine targets from multiple TFs (as you've noticed), so at least on the air side there is some improvement.

Even in real life though, performing a defensive split can be a valid tactic, but it is too powerful in the UV/WITP/WPO/AE series.

In this case I donīt even want to blame the game as it works quite good if there are not more than half a dozen TFs (of the same type and consisting of the same ships) in a hex. Itīs a problem with the players (or at least many of them) that donīt want to lose - even if they make big mistakes - and then try to compensate that with exploiting the game engine. In this particular case itīs even more annoying as mentioned before, he (my opponents) insists in a hr when he looks for an opponent that denies such a tactic.

Itīs just a joke. You donīt have to game the engine if you donīt want to...

my carrier sorties seem to have become as much depleted that this is the only strike we flew in the afternoon. Checking the TF, the sorties are down to 25% but it seems itīs low enough that we donīt fly anymore attacks on the rest of the single ship TFs. Well, Iīve ordered my carriers to move back ot itīs homeport. While my opponent tried everything to game the game the losses inflicted by KB were severe. The CVE that was sunk is nowhere as valueable as all the troops that drowned. Hopefully we were able to sink at least a couple of units completely, some of them will live on and will be rebuilt. I didnīt keep track of how many AKs are confirmed sunk but I guess we took out four dozen AKs, most of them loaded with troops. The CVE and the couple of DDs and MSWs arenīt worth a lot. In the end it was a nice raid, total losses on our side are a couple of Zeroes and a dozen bombers that will easily replaced with high exp pilots from my training daitais. It was especially nice to see that we took out armored units. A pity there wasnīt an inf division on this convoy but there were one or two bgds that are now absolutely trashed and they will probably need half a year+ to be rebuilt. And by then, we will have nearly reached 1945

weīve done a couple of turns and reached the next point where my opponent doesnīt give a f*cking damn about the hrs weīve agreed to. This kind of stupid behaviour is just too much for me and it really pisses me off. This turn saw this:

Aircraft Attacking:
27 x B-29 Superfortress bombing at 10000 feet

now where did those B-29 come from? Chungking! Chungking doesnīt have an airfield big enough to have B-29 launching strikes from. What a surprise he "forgot" about this hr too, just like the one about airfield stacking (which he still deliberetly ignores more or less all around the map where I canīt tell it 100% for sure). Not to talk about the four dozen single ship TFs he created after stumbling into KB.

I was well aware about the fact that Chungking is in range of all my important industrial areas and I was more than amazed that the Chinese never built it up, it has still the same size like at the beginning of the war. He could have moved Liberators in to bomb my industry in China but he never did, so I did nothing to raise his attention. I didnīt even mention this "threat" in my AAR as it was a fact that my opponent was reading my closed AAR while I played him before Miller took over. No matter if an AAR is "closed" or not, itīs always more than a high risk to mention something as opponents "magically" then get to know of. Experienced too many surprises in the distant past that were too surprising to happen that often... not in this game as I try to keep the game at least a week ahead of the AAR and I donīt post too many important things about my future planning.

Iīve sent this turn back with the hrs on page 1 of this AAR and told him he should redo the turn and once again told him either he sticks to the hrs or I will bail out of this game. Honestly, when Paul quit, this game should have been stopped.

The last turn when the B-29s came from a too small airfield was redone and we got a couple of turns done. And it seems to start getting a little bit more interesting again...

more and more TFs are spotted at and around Perth... more than 300 ships are reported being in port, the level 8 airfield has been filled up too and lots of TFs are spotted by my subs in this area... my Emilies reported 50+ Allied subs at Perth when there were no other ships, with so many ships disbanded in port itīs impossible to say what there is, though mostly probably AKs and APs. bigbaba is definetely up to something in this area and the funny thing is that you canīt hide such a buildup... while being on alert already anyway, we will further prepare our troops to counter an Allied offensive around Australia...

bigbaba obviously has moved the British Liberators to Ulan Ude now. There is the aircraft stacking house rule of af size x 50 + max 10%. Well, there is no hr about what happens if there is only one base left and the player has no other chance to move his ac somewhere. In this case, the last Russian base in the North has something like 1500 - 2000 ac at this level 8 airfield (6.500 airbalance!!!!) which is about 4-5 times the max amount of aircraft that are allowed there. bigbaba canīt move his Russian ac elsewhere so no complain about that (if heīs only using 400 of them - which I doubt when I look at the number of incoming ac and the number of fighters on Cap ) BUT besides this, he then moves additional British 4E bomber squadrons into this completely overstacked airfield. And to be honest, this is once again something that is well beyond my logic and understanding on what you should do.

Just like Iīve said, you should be a lawyer and set up 894 pages of a house rule contract before you start a PBEM, with all eventualities in the contract - and you will still miss something. The same with the hr about single ship TF spam. The hr says "donīt do that with INVASION TFs". Instead it should be "donīt do that with TFs". So it was just fine for him to do the single ship TF spam in the Indian ocean with his convoy as it wasnīt an "INVASION" TF...

Itīs a pain, nothing else... there are only two or three hrs in this game that are really important and itīs just annoying if you have to discuss them every couple of turns again and again and again...

Clark field and Bataan airfield are still full of training daitais. Half of them has perfect experience and are veteran pilots that have fought many succesful battles already. 440 ac max allowed, some 1.500 at the base and with the game stacking limits (not the hr) he getīs more than 550 into the air. Pretty much tells me that heīs not caring about the hr at this base at all as you have to set a hell a lot of squadrons to attack to get that many ac flying if four times overstacked...

the enemy at Blagoveshchensk is not dying away as fast as I would like it to be... only 150 troops less than last turn but they are 100% out of supply for sure and Iīm even flying ground attacks... I would like to see them being starved down to only a couple of assault points to move my remaining three divisions out and keep only one of the mongolian cav divisions here to act as a prison guard...

The Frank entered production today! BANZAI! We will nearly produce 700 of this advanced IJA fighter per month. As soon as all IJAAF fighter units will be equipped with this fighter we will build up a stock of 500 aircraft and then we will scale back production to around 350 per month. I will try to move the production start of the c-version by two months to get it 10/44. This will be a real improvement over the a-version as the c has a gun value of 14! Hopefully this will be enough to hurt Allied 4E bombers too.

Allied aircraft
B-29 Superfortress x 131

Japanese aircraft losses

Aircraft Attacking:
21 x B-29 Superfortress bombing at 10000 feet
2 x B-29 Superfortress bombing at 10000 feet

the first clash between the new American super bomber B-29 and Japanese fighters happens over Derby. I was more than shocked to see 131 of them already as I thought it would take some more time to see the first BGs attacking with "only" 150 bombers coming out of the factories per month. Obviously the enemy received some bomber groups as reinforcements already. This strike was coming in from Perth, some 1500 miles! I had some ships in port and have been moving in more and more fighters into this area due to an expected Allied operation so the bombers met resistance over the base. With 5 Type 13 radar sets within my base forces we get a Cap rate of 45% . Boy this really sucks. Cap was set to 80%. If I still donīt get decent Cap numbers (the Allied constantly get 100% Cap even if they set their fighters to a very low Cap percentage) then itīs just hopeless in future. In this case, nearly all bombers turned back, two dozen dropped their load but missed. Would have 50 dropped their bombs and would this base been reconned (or bombed) before then I would probably have lost more than a hundred undamaged fighters on the ground. The B-29 has a durability of 88!!! in Nikmod. This is another 20 more than other 4Es, which we have huge problems to fight. 13 bombers were shot down by fighters and another 2 were shot down by flak directly over the target. Another 20 crashed on their extremely long way home though, bringing up the total bombers lost to 35. Not bad but the insane range and bombload of this bomber will play a massive factor from now on. Dropping 10x500lb bombs on a target 27 hexes away is dropping 2 more 500lb bombs a B-24 can drop at 10 hexes in this mod. And itīs 6 more 500lb bombs at 27 hexes like a B-24 can drop at 14 hexes.

More engagements will show, but what seems to be obvious in this engagement was the fact that the gun value 12 of the Jack is a notable difference to the gun value 10 of the Tony. The small number of Jacks shot down 3 bombers over the target, while the 6 times more Tonies only shot down 10 bombers over the target. A gun value of 10 is enough to more or less deal with Allied fighters (except Lightnings with their high durability), the four cannon armed IJNAF land based fighters Jack and George of course work even better against fighters but against 4Es and the super heavy B-29 a gun value of 10 is just not enough (Iīm thinking about escorted strikes or big strikes against small Cap, when we wonīt be able to do anything). This leads to a problem, as the Frank carries the same armament like the Tony (2x12,7mm MGs + 2 20mm cannons) giving it a gun value of 10.

The Frank compared to the Tony has one hex more range, has the same armament, a slightly higher durability and is 10 mph faster and the Frank carries two 250 kg bombs which would make it a decent fighter bomber (no real need for a fighter bomber though) and a deadly kamikaze. Hopefully especially the more speed will make it an overall better aircraft (when fighting enemy fighters), the real improvement will be the next Frank version at the end of 44.

The fact that there are 130+ B-29 at Perth even more convinces me that the enemy is going to attack soon. Expected target: Northern Australia, probably Broome, followed by Derby. Wyndham or Darwin is IMO out of scope as the further the enemy heads East (when coming from Perth), the more my bases on Timor come into play.

Aircraft losses this turn. With 35 out of 131 attacking bombers lost, this would have been a disaster in real life. 26.7% loss rate. Wonder what the highest loss rate of B-29 strikes was. Itīs not as severe in the game as it would have been in real life. Iīm sure it wonīt take long and the B-29 will kill hundreds of fighters on the ground and the fighter vs bomber loss rate will soon favour the B-29 4:1 or even higher. It all depends on how our Cap rates look like.

not much action but important info this turn. We not just spotted enemy carriers (we didnīt spot the carriers but a Glen was shot down A2A in this area), we also sent out Dinah IIIs to recon the railroad towards Derby and spotted over 20 units marching North East. As expected already, the Allied are going to attack our bases on Northern Australia. Troops are marching in, so Iīm not sure what I should think about the TFs weīve spotted North West of Perth.

In any case, it will be fun. This is the point when weīve decided to abandon Charter Towers near Australiaīs West Coast. Expected Allied target(s) are Derby (primary) and Darwin (probably with the troops stationed at Townsville at the moment). We will be well prepared to fight the enemy. He wonīt get anything without comitting a hell a lot of units and this is the best that can happen for us. While it seems to be the shortest way into the SRA (donīt want to think about 1000 B-29 on Northern Australia), it is also the best place for us to fight the Allied ground units. Several factors are favouring us. We can concentrate our troops on four bases, with the enemy spearhead probably only going at one or two. Our bases can "only" be reached by B-29s (unescorted) or by carrier based ac (which canīt stay forever and we can strike back at the carriers). We will be in full supply, supply for the enemy is in question as itīs quite a long way to their next bases. And we can bring in reinforcements by sea if needed. All in all, I canīt think about a better place to fight them as we are sitting behind level 9 forts (wonder if the Allied have the same problems taking down forts as we have).

not much happening regarding combat. We are further flying recon over the railline coming from Perth, are bringing more material into the areas around Northern Australia and Perth. The enemy TFs North West of Perth are still static. No idea what bigbaba is thinking or why he keeps them there...

previous Allied evacuations and daily recon convinced me that it would be possible to do a succesful paradrop on Colombo (we already took the empty Trimcomalae earlier). Dumb as I am, thinking that at this stage of the war we could achieve something at least now and then, this paradrop lead to a disaster. Why? Because 50% of my transports were shot down immedietely by the Allied uber flak (two base forces) and the other 50% of my transports were damaged. At the end we lost three dozen Topsies. Donīt even want to talk about the fact that the defending units without any combat ability magically got their assault value multiplied by 60!

this is what is defending the base:

knowing that the two base forces have 0 av, same as the aviation unit and the fragment of the HQ, it is more than amazing that they get an adjusted av of 178... another para unit is at Trimcomalae and it is ordered to MARCH to Colombo. Wonīt take much time overland through a clear hex and further on two hexes on the railline. Then we will have 80 av at Colombo, wonder if it will be enough to take out an enemy with 0 base av... this paradrop was a completely BS idea in any case...
