One reason that he did not continue to bomb your LCUs with his dive bombers could be that he waited for KB to come, hoping that the exchange between the two carrier forces would be at least equal (which is already an Allied-favorable rate) if not to his advantage.

But it's bad news anyway.

no, he knew that KB was down around the Fidjis and he expected it to take 5 days for KB to show up (in fact it would have taken 10 days for KB to show up combat ready). So for the expected time the atoll assault takes, it would have been no problem at all to fly ground attacks or set his bombers at least to nav attack/port or airfield attack.

Like I´ve mentioned earlier, I´m not willing to take on the Allied carriers on a nearly 1:1 basis as this is Nikmod and KB would not be existing anymore if the Allied would launch a coordinated strike. Sooner or later I will be forced to take on the Allied carriers with my carriers, but if it is possible I will try to only do that if the Allied carriers are under attack from LBA also. Preferrable already two or three days under LBA attacks when KB will go in.

Yeah, it´s bad news. Not that it´s so bad to lose Midway, but the way it was lost. It looked like the assaults my forces are doing against 0 assault value base forces...

maybe there is something wrong with the code of the NIK-MOD, chris?

the battle was very one-sided imho. i mean, we all know what loses the allied had to take tarawa and that was late 1943! now they capture midway after a very short fight with minimal loses.

Nikmod hasn´t any changes in ground combat. I´m pretty sure the most important factor were the nukes, so there was no resistance during the landings. When you look at the casulties during the landings, there were mostly only a couple of hundred, whereas the casualties can go up to thousands pretty fast if you see a lot of counterfire.

That I only had level 2 forts at this early stage of the war didn´t help either. I´m confident though that the Allied will take far more losses with the conquest of other atolls, at least at those I want to defend.

Unless forts get high...Massive bombardments can really mess up island defenses...We can argue over how realistic it is...But in game terms atolls (unless supply and fort levels are high) can get nuked rather easily and
fall quickly.....

Yes, the Allies were very lucky, better not take unnecessary risks with KB in these circumstances.  However I hope you have better defences at Marcus Island...

Also, if he does not use that many transport ships, he is more vulnerable to mine hits..
If you have a division spread out over 20 ships, the loss of a single ship to a mine is not that big
a deal..But if he has a division over only 6 ships and he loses a ship...That is a big chunk dead before it hits the ground.

defenses at Marcus? LOL! Marcus now has a IJN base force with 8 assault points. Until yesterday it had no unit at all! Wake is top on my priority list and I´ve landed two more base forces and a dedicated CD unit. Though assault value on Wake is only 120 at the moment, forts level 1, af 3. If Miller wants he could make a quick grab but I doubt he will - unfortunately. If he would, I would counterland 6 divs 2 weeks later.

It´s February 42, means I´m not yet prepared to fend off an Allied advance! I´m the one who´s advancing!

Serioulsy, Miller could advance all the way to the Philipines and take out a couple of bases with only very few troops on them. I´ve lost more troops on Midway than are based in total on all other bases West from Midway to the Philipines. But one thing is for sure, he can´t hold them. So even if it would look like a great Allied offensive, in the end he would lose a couple of divisions and that´s all. Would be worse than starting his offensive in early 43 like usual.

that was another problem, there weren´t any mines at Midway, I´ve just started my mining operations. I took the atoll a couple of weeks ago, hard to have it a fortress four weeks later.

more Chinese units entered Lashio, they were driven out immediately, retreating towards Myitkina. There are some 10 Chinese units in Burma. The Chinese units are out of supply but I guess there will be enough supply at Myitkina... Miller will surely regret that move when my China Command divisions will arrive in Burma also. As China is already a total victory for us (some additinal 250.000 Chinese troops are cut off and 100.000 already surrendered) so I have ordered already 4 China divisions to march towards Rangoon.

damn, clicked the wrong button. I wanted to order one div to do a bombardment to see what the Allied moved in from Myitkina. Obviously I clicked on deliberate attack instead. Luckily, the losses aren´t that severe. Miller also has a UK!!!! division here! He´s not just trying to defend Myitkina, no, he even seems to go on the offense! In a couple of months, this is also something he will regret I guess, moving divs and bgds from India to Burma...

unbelievable, Miller still is attacking even though nothing so far could achieve something against my high exp (80+) Oscar sentais. We achieve a 33:0!!!! in A2A kills today! That´s pretty much off IMO... it´s not encouraging though if you set 144 fighters on 90% Cap and you constantly not even see half of them airborne when the Allied will constantly get 100% into the air in a couple of months...

so much about how hard it was to kill off my troops that lost the base... couple of days and all are lost... Now the expected bad thing. Out of the 10 units there, I was able to evac a fragment of all of them. BUT, 4 disappeared completely, 2 turned into ghost units , 1 stayed as fragment and 3 turned into the new parent unit. To make it worse, also the big base force (the most important unit) is lost...

PC Sonan Maru #5
PC Nichi Maru #1
PC Gamitsu Maru #1
PC Fumi Maru #3

Allied Ships
SS S-34, hits 9, on fire, heavy damage

this was two times surprising! First off, the sub of course hit one of my ASW ships but the MK10 torps failed to detonate... even more surprising the sub was hit twice and 7 near misses. Would surprise me a third time if it would sink...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Luganville at 72,107

Japanese Ships
AK Hokkai Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships
SS KXVIII

that´s not surprising anymore, a sub sitting in one of my bases, just waiting. If you´re not 100% dumb you can easily figure out when a TF will arrive somewhere... AK is dead, too far away from a bigger port...

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x IL-4c bombing at 6000 feet

Miller still has his Chinese bombers ordered to attack my positions at Lashio. Those IL-4c are his BEST long range bombers that he has at the moment so I wouldn´t waste them with such strikes. They carry 10x250 kg AP!!! bombs so they could be lethal anti ship weapons if employed properly. I won´t tell him...

aha! The AVG is back in business in China, flying LRCAP from Chungking. That´s the difference between my 80 exp and 65 exp Oscars flying escort. Here we had 65 exp Oscars and they can´t stand against the Tomahawks. Am glad that there are not many fighters within the AVG left, otherwise this could have become bloodily...

The Fidjis are Japanese now. Little revenge for the defeat at Midway, the Allied are nearing 7000 victory points for ground losses...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Hengchow

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 11348 troops, 356 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3037

Defending force 96612 troops, 583 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2563

Allied ground losses:
338 casualties reported

Am unsure how the Chinese situation at Henghow looks like at the moment. The number of Chinese troops defending here went down nearly 1000 troops from last turn but the assault value is still growing... Doesn´t matter, those troops are lost as I can´t see a chance to see this base liberated again as the moves of Miller in China are semi optimal at the moment. Moving those 10 Chinese units to Burma doesn´t help him either I guess.

Japanese ground losses:

Allied ground losses:

An understrenght Dutch bgd was ordered to attack three of our TK rgts. This will make my deliberate attack tomorrow much more easy I guess and I expect the base to fall tomorrow and the Dutch defenders to surrender...

These are my normal op losses for a normal day with bombing activity at very short range... My 75-85 exp pilots crash all the time just from taking off...

heh, in my UV games as the japanese (juli 1943 now) my pilots flow half the mission number of the allied and have 2x higher Op lose rate. it seems to be the same in WITP and even higher in AE.

Moved in my troops yesterday, this should prevent Chinese units moving down South to free the two sieged bases of Wuchow and Hengchow where we have trapped hundred thousands of Chinese troops. Seems like a bad habit of Miller to order deliberate attacks immediately when my troops enter one of his hexes. He would be better off ordering a bombardment first to see what he faces. It´s a wooden hex, so with near parity in assault points, the enemy attack is shredded!

this is the crossroad hex West of Changsha. Not much of a problem to force the Chinese units to retreat, one damned unit moved out to the West exactly this turn... the rest was forced to retreat North towards Chungking...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/26/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Wake Island at 82,63

Japanese Ships
ML Saishu
ML Takashima
ML Ishizaki
ML Hoko
ML Hirashima
ML Naryu
ML Tsubame
ML Kamome

Allied Ships
SS S-23

moved in a big TF of ML to mine Wake, unfortunately there is a sub sitting and so it´s obvious for Miller that there are a lot of mines at Wake now. I thought Midway would be more or less a fortress when the Allied invasion began, I will put so much effort into building up Wake that it REALLY will be a fortress if Miller decides to attack here. For me, there are only two obvious targets for Miller in the Pacific, one is Wake and the other one is Canton Island in the South Pacific. I will put more efforts into defending Wake of course...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 24,54

Japanese Ships
PG Myoken Maru
PG Shosei Maru
PG Nishho Maru
PG Magan Maru
PG Busho Maru

Allied Ships
SS Grenadier

the fight against the Allied submarine force goes on. Amazing how many engagements we see every turn when you think about the fact that I´ve sunk over 30 subs during the first couple of days of the war...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Hengchow , at 45,37

Japanese aircraft
Ki-30 Ann x 12
Ki-32 Mary x 8
Ki-51 Sonia x 12

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-30 Ann: 1 damaged
Ki-32 Mary: 1 damaged
Ki-51 Sonia: 2 damaged

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 17

Aircraft Attacking:
12 x Ki-30 Ann bombing at 2000 feet

the dive bombers seem to be very good in attacking the small level 1 airfield...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ki-21 Sally x 71
Ki-49 Helen x 47

No Japanese losses

Aircraft Attacking:
8 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 26000 feet

whereas the use of level bombers against a level 1 airfield from this height is just a waste of supply...

Sub attack at 96,62

Japanese Ships
SS I-19

Allied Ships
AK Montanes, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
AK Dorothy Philips
AK Arcata
APD McKean

what Miller is able to do is something we are also able to do, putting subs into or next to a base hex where we are pretty sure to find a lot of shipping going in and out... This is SE of Midway... I-19 hits a small AK, the APD dropped a lot of DCs but all missed...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese Ships
SS I-3

Allied Ships
AK Mildura, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage
AK Kwangtung

then the TF enters Midway where another sub is waiting, hitting another small AK... seems like Miller is taking more losses after the conquer of Midway than during the assault...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 29,50

Japanese Ships
AP Hakozake Maru

Allied Ships
SS Grampus

Grampus missed the AP. Thank god, it´s one of my big APs fully loaden with parts of an IJA division... no escorts as I have those troop transport TFs going at full speed to redeploy my divisions and with PGs as escorts they are really slowed down...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Midway at 95,61

Japanese Ships
SS I-19

Allied Ships
AK Duymaer van Twist, Shell hits 5, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Hopefully Miller is as amused as I am about the subs waiting in base hexes... I-19 surfaced to kill off another small AK. The ship is confirmed sunk...

Allied aircraft
T.IVa x 3

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AP Rakuyo Maru

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x T.IVa launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Have Zeroes at Soerabaja on Cap so instead of attacking the big TFs at Soerabaja, the Dutch torp bombers attack a TF in the open sea...

Japanese Ships
PG Kantori Maru
PC Shonon Maru #11
PG Santos Maru
DD Akebono
DD Ushio
DD Sazanami

Allied Ships
SS Triton, hits 6

Don´t like using such a mixed force in an ASW TF but they did a good job. Triton takes one real hit and five near misses... guess it will retire to Hawai next turn...

I have decided to start my attacks at Hengchow and not to starve those units to death as this takes too long. We will see how my first attack will work. Expect to see level 9 forts and my troops to be shredded in the first attack. If the supply level of the enemy is low, then all my following attacks will have the chance to be more succesful though...

those high altitude attacks against the small airfield aren´t succesful at all. Pretty sure that there are level 9 forts already so all that counts are supply hits, which we won´t achieve from that height...

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 8

Japanese ground losses:
2493 casualties reported
Guns lost 177
Vehicles lost 3

Allied ground losses:
456 casualties reported
Guns lost 22

our attack goes in and I´m pretty happy with the results. Forts were at the expected Maginot line level 9 but the Chinese supply situation must be totally desperate already as the defenders adjusted av looks horrible, therefore our losses are only half as high as I´ve expected them to be. Moving out three divs to Changsha and ordered three fresh divs to move in. Next attack in a couple of days. As it looks now, it seems we can take Hengchow easier than Changsha even though here are level 9 forts and as many defending troops. If this wasn´t just a very lucky die roll for us, I´m hoping to take the base within the next four to six weeks.

7 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet
2 x TBD Devastator launching torpedoes at 200 feet

god damn, I´m asking me if this can really happen twice! Just like at Midway, out of a sudden the enemy CVs pop up two hexes off the base! Again, there more than 40 search aircraft on nav search and again it is possible for the Allied CVs to sneak in unseen. I´m sure the carriers moved in at full speed, but to counter this, I have placed 6 subs 12 hexes East of Wake to either sight the enemy, or at least sight one of the enemy´s search aircraft to alert me.

And once again it seems Miller is too lucky for us... TONIGHT, TWO!!!!! TFs arrived at Wake. One TF was already there... what can I say... one day later, one day earlier...

BANZAI! At Midway, IMO the Allied were lucky in every aspect! But lucky or not, you can´t be 100% lucky everytime! And this time, Miller will surely be thinking that he had no luck at all! Guess what, the two Allied CV TFs got SEPERATED!!! This CV TF took position 120 miles SE of Wake and the other one that should have followed ended up 180 miles SE of Wake!

And as I have mentioned before, Wake is becoming a fortress, after the fall of Midway, we immediately transfered Kates to Wake. No Betties / Nells because the airfield is only level 3 yet and I knew, if the enemy carriers would show up, they would again close in enough to be in torp range of the Kates. Out of 54 Kates and 54 Zeroes we see a good number attacking (we also have an air HQ at Wake) and with the enemy CV TFs being seperated, the enemy Cap isn´t bullet prove, even though there are again a lot of Marine fighters in the air also. The high exp Navy Wildcat pilots prove to be deadyl against our Zeroes, but still, the Zeroes enable the torp carrying bombers to do their torp runs. Only two Kates were shot down by the enemy fighters. Not like at Midway, when 50+ high exp Betties / Nells only achieved two torp hits on the slow moving BBs, the 40 Kates doing torp runs put 6 fish into CV Enterprise! Needless to say that the ship is confirmed SUNK!

BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

the whole TF is destroyed... mmmm... lost something like 20 ships today...

and still, we have sunk CV Enterprise, so I wonder if Miller will see this operation as a success... I would cheer if he would have arrived yesterday and two of my TFs wouldn´t be at Wake while only one would have been beat up. As it is now, I´m not that happy with it, even though I should be I guess.

It´s just like that I don´t like losing ships that way... not again...

with the loss of CV Enterprise, I guess this will mean that Miller has to be more carefully in future. This also shows that LBA can put serious harm on his CV fleet, so without nuking my airfields, upcoming invasions could get more than bloody for him.

and here we attack the second carrier TF. Our Zeroes do better against the Wildcats here than against Enterprise´s and Yorktown´s fighters. Those Navy fighter pilots are the best the Allied have and they did a pretty good job against my high exp Zeroes. Even though there are more than enough Navy pilots in the pool for the Allied, replacing a lost 80+ fighter pilot with a 60 exp pilot isn´t a good deal, so every Allied CV fighter pilot counts. The Marine Buffalos were mostly only targets for our Zeroes.

Here are the air losses. A clear victory for us. It seems like Enterprise didn´t launch bombers as they went down with the carrier. That´s excellent, I expected them to bogey out to the other three remaining carriers where they could be used to fill out the losses of high exp pilots of future operations. The Wildcats achieved a kill rate a bit better than 1:1 the Buffalos were nothing but targets so all in all we even achieved a 1.7:1 kill rate in our favour. Not bad against a numerical superiority...

what a great victory this would have been if my TFs would have left Wake to the North again and being out of range of the carriers...

Tokyo news reports the sinking of the first fleet carrier of the American Imperialists! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI! A strike consisting of combined nearly 100 first line IJN fighters and torpedoe bombers attacked the enemy´s carriers near fortress Wake, sinking the Yorktown class carrier with 6 well placed torpedoes! The enemy flew several strikes on unarmed merchant ships in this area.

USS Enterprise (CV-6, later CVA-6 and CVS-6), 1938-1958

USS Enterprise, a 19,800-ton Yorktown class aircraft carrier, was built at Newport News, Virginia. Commissioned in May 1938, she made a shakedown cruise to South America, then operated in the Caribbean. In April 1939, Enterprise was ordered to the Pacific, where she was to play an unparalleled role in the great sea war that began with Japan's 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

At the time of that raid, Enterprise was at sea. On 10 December, her planes sank a Japanese submarine, the first of many enemy ships that would fall victim to her air group. Later in December, she participated in the abortive Wake Island relief expedition. In February 1942, after escorting convoys to the South Pacific, Enterprise attacked Japanese positions in the Marshalls. During the following three months, she hit Wake and Marcus islands, covered the Doolittle raid on Japan and was en route to the South Pacific when the Battle of the Coral Sea took place in early May.

In June 1942, Enterprise played a vital role in the Battle of Midway, in which her planes sank or helped sink three Japanese aircraft carriers and a cruiser. She was next involved in the Guadalcanal Campaign, including the landings there in early August, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons later in that month and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in October. Badly hit by Japanese bombs in August and October, Enterprise was the only available fleet carrier in the area in November and, despite her damaged condition, launched her air group against enemy ships during the climactic Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. Remaining in the Solomons area into the Spring of 1943, she received the Presidential Unit Citation for her exploits there.

In late 1943 and early 1944 Enterprise participated in the Gilberts and Marshalls invasions and in attacks on Japanese bases in the Central and Southern Pacific. In June and July, she took part in the Marianas operation and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. From August to December, her planes joined in more raids and again engaged enemy ships during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in late October. At the end of 1944 Enterprise received a special night operations air group, with which she took part in the Luzon campaign, strikes in the South China Sea, the Iwo Jima invasion, raids on the Japanese home islands and the Okinawa campaign. She was repaired locally for bomb damage received on 13 March 1945 and Kamikaze damage on 11 April, but had to the return to the U.S. after being badly hit by another Kamikaze on 14 May.

Enterprise's repairs were finished in September 1945, after the Japanese surrender. She helped return servicemen from the war zones and was present for the Fleet Review off New York City in October 1945. Inactive after early 1946, Enterprise decommissioned in February 1947. While laid up, she was redesignated CVA-6 in October 1952 and CVS-6 in August 1953. After the failure of efforts to make her into a memorial, USS Enterprise was sold for scrapping in July 1958.

now that was a short war for the "Big-E".

congratulation for this victory (20 AP for a fleet carrier is still a victory imho).

One CV down, three to go.  I hope their battlewagons and divisions aren't coming right behind their CVs.

May I ask who you sent to Wuchow ?  2000 troops for 1100 AV, that's weird.

Wasp will arrive in May IIRC, so this would bring the Allied CV strenght to 430 carrier based aircraft in summer again. With our rule about max 450 carrier based ac this would be a full strike force.

No, there are no battlewagons around, "only" the two CV TFs were spotted. And there are also no invasion TFs. With Enterprise lost, this will buy us some time I guess, with only three CVs an invasion against my strongholds could be too dangerous.

I´ve sent my special Samurais to Wuchow! Seriously, what you see is the total assault value of ALL troops there, which are a couple of divisions and you also see what is doing the bombardment, which would be my art units only. The divisions are only holding their position.
