The caption to my rather larger copy of this photograph says that it is a Kokusai Ki-76, a liaison and observation aircraft bearing a singular resemblance to the Fieseler Storch. I believe there is some controversy over whether the Japanese copied the Fieseler design, but even if they did not do so wholesale then it seems the Ki-76 was, to say the least, heavily influenced by the German product.

The IJA also trialled the Kayaba Ka-Go 2 autogyro aboard Akitsu Maru - the design bears a marked similarity to a Cierva autogyro - but was not adopted for service, largely due to its minimal capacity to lift any kind of payload.

My initial thought was the Ki-76 as well, but it looks like it's got two engines.

BTW, the Kayaba Ka-1 autogyro DID see service aboard the IJA carriers.

I see what you mean. Unfortunately the aircraft is still somewhat indistinct on my larger version of the image, but on close examination I think the caption on my copy is probably correct. Possibly there's a blemish on the print which assists the illusion of the aircraft being twin engined.

Of course, larger aircraft other than B-25's have made use of of carrier decks. For example, there is the well-known 'photographic evidence' of a C-5 lifting off the deck of a US fleet carrier

The design is inspired by the Storch, but it's not a direct copy. There are many well visible differences.

Citation from wikipedia:
The Ki-76 remained in service as an artillety spotter and liaison aircraft until the end of the war. Ki-76s were also used as an anti-submarine aircraft operating from the Japanese Army's escort carrier, the Akitsu Maru, being fitted with an arrestor hook and carrying two 60 kg (132 lb) depth charges.

I wonder why the plane needed an anchestor hook - did it have much higher landing speed than the Fi-156? The Storch can land on a CVE easily without a hook (50m was enough for start and landing).

The plane could be useful in witp/AE in the ASW role, but apearantly only a small number was fitted that way. Liaison and artillery spotter (very short range recon aircraft) are virtually useless in witp (look at those short ranged Dutch recons, or the unarmed Anson in RHS).

The USN landed C-130's aboard the USS FORRESTAL in the 1960s - (without arrestor hooks) investigating their possible use for resupply uses... while the project was successful, they did not pursue this further.

They are in WITP, so I imagine they are in AE. I haven't read that any ships in WITP are removed in AE. In WITP, as I am sure you know, the Japanese player has the option to make the conversion. Most do not because it ruins a perfectly good BB.
