Combat

The SS Blackfish, 26 miles SW of Buka, torpedoed an IJN MSW, setting it ablaze. The waters extinguished the fires are she promptly sank.

Pagan was bombed by 42 X B-25J and both sides escaped damage.

Once more the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was bombed by 20 X B-25J and light casualties were reported. No planes were damaged in the Chinese Air Force's favorite milk run.

The Hopei Militia Division was attacked by 8 X Helen and had light losses.

Maloelap was raided by 29 X B-24J, 5 of which were damaged by AA. The airfield sustained light damage, though a few secondary explosions were observed.

Dave is complaining about a sore back and Sandy laughs it off saying, “Next time pick a smaller target 'Deer Slayer'.”

Tomorrow the men of Gunny's platoon will board a transport, again. The men aren't happy about this as the ships are cramped, smelly and the method of taking them to places that they don't want to be. “Relax,” says Slim during a card game, “Nobody lives forever.” They other guys feel no better after this pronouncement.

The final class finally ended and Gil, pass in hand, immediately sets out for Elaine's home. The weekend starts with a home cooked meal, which he savors, knowing that it could be a long time before he gets something other than Army Chow. As the street car, Pittsburgh jargon for what anybody from Brooklyn knows is a trolley, carries him along Forbes Ave towards Squirrel Hill he thinks about how he's managed to gain weight on that Army chow so it can't be that bad. Nebraska, what awaits me there, he wonders. Later that night Harry and Gil debate the World Series. Harry, being a Pirates fan, roots for the National League which is represented by the Cardinals and Gil, despite being from Brooklyn, loves the Yankees. The discussion is good natured and the barbs they toss back and forth at one another are done is a teasing manner. Elaine announces that there is a party that they are going to and must leave now. Gil says, “Thanks for the delicious dinner and may the Cards lose 2 more games. We'll see you in the morning.” After they leave Elaine's parents talk about Gil and Harry admits that he likes him a lot and that Elaine is lucky to have latched onto a guy like him. He goes on to say that she will drive poor Gil crazy in the future if they end up married.

MSWs, 79 miles NW of Tulagi, attempted to attack the Tarpon. After some tense moments the sub made good her escape without being pinned to a specific location.

Pagan was bombed by 58 X B-25J and both sides escaped damage. For the second time the bombers were unable to hit their target due to the weather.

Myitkyina was raided by 119 X Liberator VI, 48 X B-24D and 32 X P-38G. The flak was light and inaccurate, but 4 X Liberator VI and a B-24D were damaged. The airbase was clobbered, numerous secondary explosions were observed and ground losses were reportedly very heavy.

The favorite Chinese milk run was made by 20 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N and the Japanese had moderately heavy casualties. The Chinese aircraft departed intact. The Chinese can't understand why the Japanese unit stubbornly clings to it's position without any air cover or an air defense of any kind. These raids will continue as the Mitchell crews continue to get better at their jobs and a weakened unit allows a better chance of success for the Chinese foray into Burma in support of the British scheduled for late December or early January.

Maloelap was hit by 26 X B-24J, 9 of which were damaged, for light damage to the runway.

The Japanese shipping fled Tulagi just as the USN CVTFs arrived within range. Hopefully some of the subs in the area will be able to pick some of them off.

Back on the ships the assault troops of Operation King try to keep themselves occupied. “It's boring enough sitting around at a base, but this is pure hell,” one man complains.

The Flying Deuces hold a meeting and talk about what needs to be improved. “How about landing skills?” one of them quips and the place bursts into laughter. Their skipper is laughing also and says that the squadron exec has a list of pilots who need some work on various skills.

“Better relations between the pilots and ground crews,” says Stick. The Quonset hut is silent. “We owe our lives to these guys who work their butts off so that our machines work properly. The men look around and mumble in agreement. “I think that we should do some trading with the Sea Bees, get some booze and give our guys a party to say thanks. Well, that and showing a bit more interest in them on a daily basis wouldn't hurt either.” The CO likes the idea and before they're dismissed Stick is in charge of the procurement and planning for this party. A collection is made and everyone digs in and contributes some money.

Elaine's friend approaches him and says, “You asked for a copy of this picture so I hope a 5X7 is good.” He smiles and thanks her and offers to pay her for it. “No, it's my gift to you, a contribution to the war effort.” He thanks her again and goes to put it in a safe place. This picture will accompany Gil throughout the was and he will have it to his dying day.

John Doe sits down at the bar and asks for a pint, which Pete gets for him. The 2 of them remain silent for a bit until John says, “That guy who asked so many questions not to long ago turned out to be a man who works for a group of investors. They are considering opening a hotel in the area and were trying to find out how your business was. We jumped to a false conclusion about him, but better safe than sorry. We'll continue to keep a man posted here, just to keep an eye on things as our agents will continue to use your place as a base in this area. Of course the man will change frequently and you'll never know who he is, officially of course.” Mr. Doe gives Pete a wink and excuses himself and he's gone. Pete continues to go about his daily routine wondering how long the world has to suffer through this madness of war.

Combat

Once again Pagan was the designated target for 48 X B-25J and again the bombers couldn't locate the target due to heavy cloud cover.

Lautem was swept by 16 X Kittyhawk and 3 X P-40N, but no Japanese fighters came out to play.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was attacked by 16 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N and the unit sustained very light casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, not far from Sining, was bombed again by 11 X Helen and had light losses.

Maloelap was raided by 21 X PB4Y and flak damaged 7 of them. The airfield had light damage and 2 X Dinah were destroyed on the ground.

Lunga had a CAP of 11 X Zero, 26 X Zeke, 3 X George, 32 X Jack, 3 X Tojo and 6 X Tony when 178 X SBD, 78 X TBF, 66 X TBM, 33 X F4F-4 and 104 X Hellcat appeared. The battle was fierce and ended within minutes of it's start. The Japanese suffered 11 X Zero shot down, 26 X Zeke destroyed, 2 X George lost, 41 X Jack downed, 3 X Tojo splashed and 8 X Tony eliminated in the air and on the ground. The Americans sustained 2 X SBD destroyed (24 damaged), a TBF downed (10 damaged), 2 X TBF splashed (4 damaged), 3 Wildcats shot down and 22 Hellcats destroyed (3 damaged). The port sustained moderately heavy damage, the airfield was moderately damaged, numerous secondary explosions were reported and ground losses were put at heavy.

In the midst of all of today's action and everyone manning their battle stations the crew of the Helena listens to the radio broadcast of the World Series game from St. Louis. The Yankees won 2-1 behind winning pitcher Marius Russo while Harry Brecheen took the loss for the Cards. One more win and the Yankees can wrap up another championship. Bill watches as the carrier closest to them recovers returning planes. If I see this a thousand times, he thinks, it'll still be an amazing sight to behold. A course change is given and the USN's fleet glides silently through the swells.

Stick and a couple of other pilots who have today as scheduled rest move around the areas inhabited by the Sea Bees. They manage to buy a few bottles of whiskey and 10 cases of beer. This is a good start, but not nearly enough. When they return to their squadron's area they find that there already is a case of whiskey and plenty of beer on hand. Their CO has placed 2 men on guard duty fearing that their goodies will develop legs. “How did all of this get here?” asks Stick.

“It turns out that the mechanics got wind of the our plans and decided to pitch in. One of our mechanics is a bit of a scrounging expert and always manages to come up with stuff we need, but don't have,” says their skipper. It seems that the mechanics appreciate the pilots too.

Gill and Elaine spend the day walking through Schenley Park. They are both lost in thought when Gill stops and turns to her and says, “Will you wait for me to return?” She nods and they kiss.

The Franco government ordered the 250th “Blue” Division home from Russia.

The SS Bowfin, 24 miles NE of Batan Island, attacked an ASW TF. A PC was struck by 2 fish and immediately disappeared in a fireball.

The SS Stingray, 79 miles from Banjarmasin, torpedoed a heavily escorted AK.

Pagan was raided by 45 X B-25J and again no bombs were dropped on target due to heavy cloud cover. All of the planes returned to base without a scratch.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was once more tormented by 16 X B-25J and 9 X P-40N. The planes leisurely dropped their loads on the unit inflicting moderately heavy losses and then departed unscathed.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, still trying to make it back to friendly territory,y was bombed by 15 X Helen. Losses were light.

Maloelap was hit by 17 X B-25J, 3 of which were damaged. The runway was hit by a few bombs and other than that both sides had no casualties.

The Helena's crew was once more treated to the radio broadcast of the World Series. Spud Chandler won for the second time as the New York Yankees won the game 2-0. Mort Cooper took the loss and once again the Yankees were crowned champions. Bill Dickey homered for the Yanks and the pool was emptied by 5 winners who gladly shared the money. It was announced that the player's share on the winning team was $6,139 and the losers got $4,322.

Slim and Gunny are on the deck of the ship looking at the stars and Slim says, “I'm so glad to be back on one of these hulks. They stink already and we haven't even left yet. Maybe somebody should tells the generals that the Marines fight better when they aren't sick. Gunny nods, but he's lost in thoughts of his own.

Red listens on the radio set to some music and leans back in the seat. He scratches Lucky's head and the dog moans. Red thinks about all he's been through and wonders how long the war will continue.

Gil hugs and kisses Elaine goodbye shakes Harry's hand and gets onto the train. She is in tears, Harry hopes he comes back and Gil is full of fear. He doesn't know what lies ahead, only what he's leaving.

Combat

Myitkyina was subjected to a virtually unopposed air raid conducted by 35 X B-24D and 24 X P-38G. A bomber was shot down and 3 others damaged by AA while the base had light damage and very light casualties.

Koepang was attacked by 30 X B-24J (3 damaged) and 15 X PB4Y (9 damaged). The airfield had moderate damage, a couple of large secondary explosions, 3 X Sally and 2 X Dinah were destroyed on the ground and light losses by the troops there.

Lautem was hit by 123 X B-25J, 9 X Kittyhawk III, 2 X P-40N and 12 X P-38J. Flak accounted for 4 of the bombers and damaged 31 others while the air base had moderate damage, 2 X Mavis were left burning in their revetments and ground losses were placed at heavy.

Gili Gili was attacked by 106 X B-17E and 47 X B-24D. The Japanese CAP was a Zeke and a Jack (damaged). 20 of the Flying Forts and 4 Liberators were damaged while the airfield took very heavy damage, numerous secondary explosions and light casualties to the troops. Before the dust had settled 27 B-17E appeared and 1 was lost while 9 others sustained damage from the flak. Light additional damage was done to the base and a Zeke was destroyed.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was hit by 14 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N for very light losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 16 X Helen and had negligible losses.

The BB Tennessee should be in dry dock at LA within the next few days, ending her ordeal.

The British have finally revealed their plans to Washington. Everything was vague until now as London is more than pleased that the Americans will throw some LCUs into the fight for Burma. Mandalay is the primary target and Pagan secondary to the initial thrust. Myitkyina and Lashio will be cut off and then reduced while Rangoon is isolated and ultimately taken. The Chinese will attack across the river from China near Lashio to tie down Japanese troops and the rest of the Allied troops will hopefully evade detection until they are almost at Mandalay. Pagan will be taken by a smaller force unless it's weakly held and then paras might get the job. In the meantime the bombings will become heavier and more frequent.

Stick is overjoyed that the Flying Deuces have new orders. They will spend tomorrow supplying a LRCAP for a surface combat TF near Wake Island. The pilots are attending a special briefing as this will be their first time supplying a CAP for ships. “First you have to find them, then you need to listen to the reports they will send you based on anything their radar detects, then you kill fly out to kill the Japs and then go home. What could be easier?” one of the pilots jokes and the men share a nervous laugh. They are told what's expected of then and that each flight will consist of 4 planes with 1 being over the ships at all times and another at Wake, on alert.

As the CVTFs approach Luganville for replenishment new orders are received. They will proceed at maximum speed to intercept some Japanese APs making for the Solomons. Helena heaves as she swings onto her new course and picks up speed. Bill wonders how the DDs are doing for fuel. He knows that they will be the first ones to need replenishment and if the fleet runs into trouble it might not be possible to do so. He observes the ships holding their formation despite the maneuvering and is proud of the seamanship displayed by these boys who not long ago were civilians.

PFC Samuel Cohen of the 25th Infantry Division is sick at the thought of boarding another ship. This time, he tells himself, when I get sick I won't take a downwind position at the ship's rail. He wonders where they're bound as his unit moves to the docks at Luganville.

Gil sits staring out of the window as the train makes it's way westwards. They stopped in Cleveland and he will make a change in Chicago. He thinks about how he had never been on a train before going into the Army, other than the subways of New York City. He'd never been out of the City except for one trip to the north, about 20 miles or so in his brother in law's car. That was a big outing and now this. The war has changed everything and Gil hopes that he can attend a University when it's over. He'd like to become a history teacher, he thinks as he drifts off to sleep.

Combat

Pagan underwent an early morning air raid by 54 Mitchells and again the planes were unable to locate the target because of cloud cover.

Myitkyina was bombed by 29 X B-24D, 3 damaged by light AA, and 29 X P-38G. The damage to the base was moderate and some secondary explosions occurred.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was again visited by 8 X Helen and had light losses as the retreat continues cross country at a snail's pace.

The BB Tennessee will be moved into a dry dock and extensive repairs will be made to her at LA as it has now been confirmed that the facilities there are reserved for her.

The American carriers race towards the Solomons, but recon patrols have lost sight of the intended targets.

Gil reached Chicago and he and the others bound for Nebraska and other points west were herded into an area where they waited for their train to arrive. He takes the time to write a letter to Elaine telling her that he misses her already and that being away for an extended period of time will be very difficult.

Slim lazes on the deck of the ship and crewmen already know better than to try and boss him around. He avoids spending time below decks as the smell of cooking, human excrement, urine and body odor has transformed the confined spaces of the ship to a sickening place to be. The men of his MG section are with him and they only leave this place in shifts to get food or to use the head. They'll be damned if anyone will displace them and when their company commander approaches them about getting back to their assigned area Slim quietly tells his Captain that he'd rather be placed in the brig ashore first. “You know what a hellhole this ship has become and if you want us to be able to function as Marines when we need to then why not let us do what you know is best?” The officer has some words with Gunny before he turns and leaves. Gunny then takes Slim aside and tells him to carry on and just yest the officers to death in the future. A warm rain begins to fall and men come topside with bars of soap to wash themselves.

Sam surprised himself as he wasn't sick, yet. Of course they weren't underway yet. The conditions on the ships are deteriorating rapidly. The facilities just can't seem to handle so many men.

Stick flew his assigned LRCAP and he marveled at how the ships could look so small when he knew they were huge. The way the moved, holding their formation was as graceful as his flight was. By the time they headed back to Wake it had been another boring flight. How could I ever get a kill if the Japs don't come, he wonders.

No targets presented themselves so the carriers head back towards Luganville. The CVs refuel the DDs and the fleet will rendezvous with a replenishment TF, if needed. Bill tells Jeff that he's going to catch some rack time and that if anything comes up to send for him. Jeff nods and settles into overseeing things on Helena's bridge.

The Red Army reached Melitopal in the Southern Ukraine.

Combat

The SS Runner, in the Slot 19 miles from Tulagi, hit an MSW with 3 torpedoes. The flames were quickly put out with a loud hissing as the waters covered the vessel and she was no more.

The SS Trout, 87 miles NW of Tulagi, hit an AK with 3 fish breaking it in two and the halves both disappeared quickly.

The SS Shark, 16 miles SW of Russell Island, put a torpedo into and AK, setting it ablaze. Later in the day the Shark caught another AK and fed it 2 fish, causing fires and heavy damage and then the ship succumbed and rolled over. After reloading she tried to attack another AK, but failed to achieve a favorable firing solution.

Jaluit's port suffered minor damage as 51 X B-25J attacked it. The flak damaged 7 of the bombers as the escort of 46 X P-38G lazily milled about with nothing to do except watch the proceedings.

Lunga was bombed by 191 X B-24D, of which AA damaged 7. The bombs rained down and the earth shook as the airfield had very heavy damage, 7 X Jack and a George were trashed on the ground, troops sustained very heavy casualties and numerous secondary explosions were noted.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was struck by 37 X B-25J and 14 X P-40N. No planes were damaged and the Japanese had heavy losses.

The plodding 5th New Chinese Corps was raided by 8 X Helen and no losses were reported.

After the long voyage some of the USN's ships are getting close to Luganville. A schedule for fueling, rearming and repairing ships is already for their arrival.

Bill looks forward to a little bit of time ashore as he feels that his crew could use a chance to unwind. Getting and sending some mail will be welcomed also.

Slim looks at the officer as he moves by. He shakes his head and says, “It's a wonder that with guys like that whole units aren't killed.” Gunny stares at him and tells him to stow it. “Yeah, I know that I'm in enough trouble already. Damn it all Gunny what can they do to me? Send me into combat? Put me on one of these stink boats?” The prospect of combat doesn't thrill Slim, but being stuck on these ships and having fools for leaders bothers him more than a bit. He knows that he can trust Gunny to make the right calls in tight situations and that'll be good enough for him. He feels sorry for the guys stuck with leaders that haven't seen combat yet.

Gil awakens from his sleep and looks out over the flat landscape. Cornfields have changed to wheat fields, but other than that the Great Plains are as flat and boring as can be. He wonders if Nebraska is like this and then his thoughts turn to the rumors he's heard for the past day. In Nebraska they will meet with other men and be assigned to air crews.

Pete and Sylvia share a quiet dinner together in the pub before any customers arrive. “Are you bored with this life?” she asks him, fearing the worst.

“Not on your life,” he responds, “I have you and that's where my home is for the rest of our lives. Why would I want to leave the woman that I love? Besides soon we'll have an addition to our little family and then who knows what the future will bring. Nope, you're stuck with me Syl.”

The US 8th AF hit the ball bearing plants at Sweinfurt. Of the 291 planes in the raid 198 were shot down or damaged beyond repair. The Luftwaffe lost 40 fighters.

The escape of 300 Soviet POWs and Jews from Sobibor resulted in 50 of them surviving. Exterminations were stopped at the camp and all traces of such activities were removed. The Germans even planted trees there.

Combat

Pagan was raided by 60 X B-25J and sustained light damage as a result. No planes were damaged.

Mandalay was hit extremely hard by 124 X Liberator VI and 22 X P-38G. The base took very heavy damage, heavy casualties and many secondary explosion were reported. The AA was ineffective as 2 bombers were damaged.

Myitkyina was struck by 22 X B-24D for moderate damage, light casualties and some secondary explosions while 5 of the bombers were damaged by flak.

Jaluit was bombed by 37 X B-25 J and 12 X P-38G. Light damage was done to the port and 4 bombers were damaged by ground fire.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was attacked by 31 X B-25J and 11 X P-40N. Losses were moderate and all planes departed safely.

The 5th New Chinese Corps, still struggling to get away from Japanese held territory, was bombed by 15 X Helen. The unit sustained no losses.

Arrival in Lincoln was underwhelming as Gil is from New York and this city is small in comparison. He is amazed at how large the US really is. Looking at the map you know it's big, but to travel across the country is a totally different ballgame. From here he'll be heading to Kearney in a day or so. He tries to call Elaine, but can't find a phone that is available so he does the next best thing and writes her a letter.

The Flying Deuces continue to provide a LRCAP for the surface warships on patrol in the Wake Island vicinity. In the meantime a very large convoy continues to disgorge it's cargo. Stick was not scheduled to fly today as he was on alert, but as luck would have it another pilot's plane wouldn't start so here he is flying as the exec's wing man. They return to Wake in the early evening tired and bored.

Gunny has talked to his men and let them know that they are Marines and that Marines complain, but they do not disobey orders. He has interceded and they may remain on deck, for now. “In the future if there is any problem with something you come to me. You do not give the officers a hard time. Got that Slim? That goes for all of you clowns.” Nobody in the platoon wants to do anything to upset Gunny so the response is “Aye Aye.”

Elaine has been pretty quiet since Gil left. She's confused about her feelings as they're new to her. She's afraid that he won't come back to her.

“Hey, Sam take a look at this map. Now the smart money says that we're heading for these islands, called the Solomons. I have doubts and think that we're going over to this big one near Australia, Papau New Guinea. What do you think?” the man in Sam's squad asks. Sam looks at the map and just shrugs and says, “Beats me.” They are still in the harbor of Luganville waiting for who knows what. In the meantime men line the rail looking at the warships refueling and taking on supplies as rapidly as they can to make way for the next customer.

General de Lattre de Tassigny escaped from Vichy France.

The SS Trout, 27 miles NW of Tulagi, crossed paths with an unescorted AK and promptly hit it with 2 torpedoes and 1 shell from the deck gun. The hapless victim was sinking rapidly as the sub departed the scene. One of the deck gun crew noticed several shark fins in the water and a cold shiver engulfed him.

Pagan was lightly damaged by 50 X B-25J, all departed safely.

Mandalay was heavily damaged by 119 X Liberator VI and 29 X P-38G. Numerous secondary explosions were seen and ground personnel took very heavy losses. A lone bomber was damaged.

Myitkyina was raided by 30 X B-24D, 1 downed and 3 damaged. The base had light damage and troop casualties were light too.

Jaluit was struck by 41 X B-25J and 45 X P-38G. 6 bombers were damaged and the port had light damage.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was pounded by 32 X B-25J and 12 X Warhawk for moderate losses.

The Hopei Militia Division was visited by 8 X Helen and both sides had no damage done to them.

With nothing to do except wait for transport to Kearney Gil and some others wander around Lincoln. Gil is flush with excitement as he got word that as of this morning he has become a Staff Sargent. He finds a phone that he can use and tries to call Elaine. He ends up speaking to her sister as Elaine is out with her mother doing some food shopping. He leaves word that all is fine, he misses her and the news of the promotion.

Still sitting around on ships that don't move all of the troops are steadily becoming more and more irritable. Nobody seems to know why they don't set sail. The chow is OK, the quarters cramped and smelly the heads, well you don't want to know.

The warships are making ready for departure and now it's just getting the orders to sail.

Ed leaves SOPAC HQs in a state of shock. They are actually considering scrubbing Operation King and take the 2 CENPAC divisions being used as a reserve and sending them to Wake Island. The question posed to him was what did he think of this idea and he told them that if that was going to happen why not take Eniwetok on the way to Wake? The forces being transferred would be more than adequate given the intel available and it would help secure the southern flank of a possible expansion to the east.

Palawan is being fitted with a new winch for the forward crane as the old one has been under repair more often than not lately. Red and Cookie discuss what they'll do if they ever get back to Honolulu. Lucky interrupts the conversation, bringing them a present, a dead rat.

The US 5th Army crossed the Voturno.

The Italian government, under Marshal Badoglio, declared war on Germany.

The Red Army attempted a breakout from the Bukrin bridgehead south of Kiev.

Jews in Rome were rounded up.

The SS Tautog, 27 miles W of Kavieng, slipped through a screen of DDs and torpedoed an AK, setting it on fire.

Mandalay was bombed by 58 X B-25J, 13 X Corsair IV and 9 X Thunderbolt II. 5 bombers were damaged by AA and the base took heavy damage, personnel the had light losses and some secondary explosions were reported.

Lautem was raided by 94 X B-25J, 9 X Kittyhawk III and 12 P-40N. Flak was moderate, but accurate as 3 bombers were felled and 23 others took damage. 4 X PBM were damaged as they were snooping around. A Mavis was destroyed on the ground as the airfield was tagged for heavy damage, many secondary explosions and the troops had extremely heavy casualties.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was struck by 32 X B-25J and 15 X P-40N. Losses among the troops were heavy and the planes departed unharmed.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was attacked by 11 X Helen and had light losses.

SS Bowfin, 13 miles N of Batan Island, was attacked by a PG and 2 PCs, but the sub escaped with no damage.

The winch works fine and now Captain Demesa knows why they got it. Planes are to be loaded aboard the Palawan for transport to an as of yet unknown destination. First they will make for Luganville and then load there. When they depart is anybody's guess and the captain keeps this all to himself.

“Why do they load us onto the ships and then just let us sit here rotting away,” and man asks. Sam nods in agreement and others mutter their feelings about this. “I'll bet,” he continues, “That the rest of the troops feel the same way about this. The hurry up and wait is going to take a higher toll on us than the Japs will.”

Sandy got 5 letters from Bill today and she notices that the mail is erratic as some are fairly recent and one of them is months old. Better late than never, she thinks.

Gil sits at the depot awaiting a bus that will take him to Kearney. It seems something was amiss with the scheduled train and now it'll be a long bus ride. He and a couple of other guys he knows from training in Pittsburgh sit talking about almost every topic under the sun, but it all comes back to what lies ahead for them.

Elaine's sister finally tells her about the call from Gil. She apologizes about forgetting to tell her yesterday and says, “It really doesn't matter as you can't call him back anyway.” That doesn't help, but Elaine surprisingly stays calm and says that it's OK, this time.

I've noticed that Steve seems to have reincarnated his AAR. That's great and I'm going to ask him about it when I send him my next turn. I know that one of the things we both look forward to at the end of the war is the opportunity to read the other AAR. I might even read this one some time in the future.

Combat

The SS Tunny, 16 miles NW of Lunga, bagged an AK that was sailing alone. The ship was hit by 2 torpedoes and was left by the sub as she was settling beneath the waves.

Mandalay was attacked by 119 X Liberator VI and 46 X P-38G. AA fire damaged 2 bombers and a fighter while the base sustained very heavy damage, some secondary explosions and heavy losses to the troops there.

Lautem was raided by 84 X B-25J and their escort of 14 X P-40N and 24 X P-38J. The airfield was heavily damaged, troops losses were very heavy and numerous secondary explosions were claimed at the cost of 3 Mitchells going down and 15 others damaged. 3 X PBM, who were observing, were also damaged by the flak.

Lunga was under a CAP of 17 X Zeke, 18 X George, 16 X Jack, 4 X Tojo and 6 X Tony when 192 X B-24D arrived. The fighters intercepted and slashed through the bomber boxes bring death to the attackers. The bombers did their best to fight off their attackers and when the battle was done 4 X Zeke were killed (9 damaged), 2 X George were shot down (14 damaged), 2 X Jack destroyed (11 damaged) and a Tony was downed (4 damaged) while 54 bombers were lost and another 64 were damaged. The port sustained light damage as most of the planes never dumped their loads on target.

The Hopei Militia Division was struck by 15 X Helen and casualties were moderate.

The SS Shad, 24 miles N of Vigan, tried and failed to attack a TK. Later in the afternoon the sub was rewarded for it's patience as it got a torpedo into the TK, setting it on fire.

The bus ride is an ordeal that Gil is suffering through. “The suspension must've worn out in World War I,” somebody says. Another man chimes in with, “I've got a seat spring poking me in the rear end every time we hit a bump.” Another couple of hours and they should reach their destination. Gil is excited at the prospect of meet the others that he'll be flying with a they were told that the air crews will be formed and then they'll be heading off to another base to to get their planes.

A huge fleet of APs, AKs, LSTs, LCIs, etc. is just sitting there loaded with what is supposed to be the assault force of Operation King. “If they don't sail soon I'm jumping ship,” more than 1 soldier has been heard to say. Officers are having problems that they never imagined and discipline is a growing problem as something must be done, and soon.

The British operation to retake Burma is moving smoothly as troops are getting ready to go and the air fleet is poised to unleash a steady rain of bombs, weather permitting.

Sandy got 4 more letters today and has a smile on her face because at least she knows that Bill was OK as of about 5 weeks ago.

Elaine is upset that Gil hasn't tried to call her again and she wonders where he is and if he even has access to a telephone. She still works at the USO, but now she has no interest in the young men there, like she used to have. Things have changed and she feels empty without having Gil around. Her sister teases her saying, “Oh boy, you've got it bad. You're in love.”

Mandalay underwent an air raid made by 60 X B-25J and 10 X Thunderbolt II. 2 of the bombers were damaged by ground fire as they heavily damaged the air base and inflicted heavy losses among the troops there. About an hour later 118 X Liberator VI and 45 X P-38G arrived and caused additional extremely heavy damage, multiple secondary explosions and heavy casualties. A P-38G was damaged by flak.

The Hopei Militia Division was hit by 11 X Helen for light losses.

There are still no orders for the troops on the ships. The discontent is growing and company Cos are complaining to Battalion, Battalion to Regiment and so on. SOPAC promises a call will be made shortly. Gunny has managed to keep the lid on his platoon, especially Slim, though for how long is the big question.

Palawan is ready to sail, they only need to build up steam and then they're off. There are still no orders for them though.

Dave posts an announcement at the Post Office that he has a set of new tires at his shop for the first customer that stops by. He also finds out that there are some letters for Sandy from Bill. This is sure to make her happy and will delay dinner being served tonight.

The bus arrived at Kearney to late for chow, but arrangements were made for the mean to get a sandwich or two. Then the weary travelers went to a barracks to get a night's sleep. Actually they got all of about 5 hours shut eye when the bugle sounded. Immediately following chow the men had their names called out and they were then sent to various areas. Once there they again were subjected to the calling of their names. “Crew Number 32,” called the sergeant. “Carpenter, Peters, Jackson, Williams, Hammond, Gelman, Edwards, Land, Hopkins, Donnegan, Brown. Crew Number 33....” The men gathered and looked at each other and introduced themselves announcing what their crew positions were.

LT Carpenter Radar Operator
LT Peters Pilot
Capt Jackson Airplane CO
LT Williams Navigator
LT Hammond Bombardier
M/Sgt Gelman Engineer
S/Sgt Edwards
Sgt Land Rt Gunner
Sgt Hopkins Lft Gunner
S/Sgt Donnegan Central Fire Control Gunner
S/Sgt Brown Tail Gunner

“Well I suppose that means we're the Lucky 11,” said the CO. The first thing we need to do is dream up a name for our plane. Think about it and when we get our bird we'll decide.”

The SS Pogy, 27 miles SE of Ominato, was attacked by 4 destroyers and gave them the slip before any damage was done. Her skipper writes in the log book that it was radar that gave them enough warning to save them.

Mandalay was raided by 51 X B-25J, 13 X Corsair IV and 12 X Thunderbolt II. 3 of the bombers were damaged by flak as they inflicted moderately heavy damage to the base and light casualties to the troops.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was struck by 30 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N. The unit had moderate losses and all of the planes left intact.

The Hopei Militia Division was bombed by 11X Helen. Both sides escaped suffering any casualties.

Phil has orders for the O'Bannon to depart tomorrow as an escort for a small convoy. He has no concerns as the crew and it's officers know what is expected of them and they go about their duties in an efficient manner.

The “Lucky 11” are getting to know each other as they go through some orientation about the planes that they will soon be responsible for. They are told that for the indefinite future they will be held under close watch and that the only communications with the outside world will be through the mail and that will be censored. “Gentlemen, your new aircraft have the nomenclature B-29. It is a brand new type of airplane that has many new technologies so the classes that you will be attending are important. It is advisable that you learn about functions of the aircraft that would not normally be your area of responsibility.” With that the meeting breaks up and the men head off for chow.

Gil is talking with the engineer and their CO clears his throat. “Listen guys, we need to take this stuff seriously. I've been flying B-17s for some time now and from what I've heard this plane will fly higher, faster and farther and it's more complicated. I've already seen combat in Europe and we as a crew will rely on everybody in this crew to stay alive. From now on we eat, sleep, play and work together. OK?” The men all respond with a “yes sir.” The CO smiles and continues, “You can drop the sir stuff and just call me Jack. Formalities will never get the job done so we'll all have respect for every one. Of course if I say something in the air you'll do it without question. OK?” The answer this time is “OK.”

Elaine and her friends went out to the movies last night in their effort to cheer her up. “Now you know what just about everyone else is going through,” one of her friends says.

Sandy is amazed that people showed up for the tires at 6 AM today. Dave woke up and groggily, as promised, installed them before he even had a cup of coffee. She decides to make him a special lunch since last night's dinner was late and today his breakfast was also late. There has been a steady flow of letters from Bill lately, but from the dates on them he must have been saving them and then mailed them all at once. That can only mean that his ship has been at sea.

FDR wearily rubs around his eyes and says, “So we call off Operation King, send the 2 infantry divisions back to CENPAC and on the way they take Eniwetok? Then what?” The officers attending the meeting continue with their adjusted plans, projections and a new timetable for the War in the Pacific.

“Mr. President, the Japanese have a heavily fortified forward defense. They can't be strong everywhere. In Australia we can tie down large troop formations on Timor and the surrounding area while we consider hitting PNG. We can also explore the Marianas, which we'll need if we want to bomb Japan with those new planes that are now just finishing development.”

The Germans repulsed the Soviets at Bkrin.

Allied agreement to set up a United Nations commission on war crimes was announced in London.

Combat

A night air attack on Chungking was made by 20 X Nick and 10 X Helen, of which 5 X Nick were downed (10 damaged) and 5 X Helen were also shot up. No damage was done by the planes and the Chinese AA gunners had much to be proud of.

The SS Bowfin was attacked by a PG and 2 PCs. The sub easily made good her escape, but the report failed to give a position.

Koepang was raided by 30 X B-24J, of which 2 were destroyed and 6 others damaged. The bombers did light damage to the air field, though a number of secondary explosions were reported and ground losses were also light.

Port Moresby was bombed by 112 X B-17E. The AA fire was light a inaccurate as only 5 planes were damaged as they did moderately heavy damage to the port. Many secondary explosions were observed an AP, an AK and an APD were hit multiple times and all were burning. Troops took light casualties.

The SS Haddo will make for San Diego for extensive repairs as Pearl's facilities are being held for surface units.

The O'Bannon sailed with a DMS and another DD as escorts for 3 X AK heading for Ndini. Phil is glad that his buddy, Bill, had such a good crew because these waters aren't as secure as the Navy would like to believe. Air cover will be provided, or so HQ. Phil knows that they will be in range of the Japanese, but he takes comfort knowing that while the ships unload there will be plenty of fighter cover. Maritime patrols should be able to spot any IJN intruders above the surface and those below will be the escort's responsibility. He's used to doing more than his vessel should be asked to do as the war makes unreasonable demands on them all.

The Flying Deuces continue to supply LRCAP for a surface combat TF cruising the waters around Wake. The only difference between this and the regular CAP duties are the transit times from base to station take longer. The boredom continues to erode the squadrons edge. Stick finds it increasingly difficult to remain focused on the job at hand because you know nothing ever happens. Even though the pilots are constantly reminded of a moments relaxation can cost them their lives the boredom eats at their readiness and Stick is no exception.

The crews are being briefed on the B-29's capabilities and more than one man lets out a soft whistle of amazement. “If these numbers they are claiming are even close to fact this plane is one humdinger,” says one of the pilots. That night the men are given time to themselves and they write letters or just sit around BSing. Some of the guys in Gil's crew are amazed that he's from Brooklyn and yet he's a Yankee fan. Of course as they get to know one another better the teasing begins. They don't know it yet, but they will forge friendships that will last the rest of their lives.

Combat

The SS Cod, 41 miles E of Butuan, stumbled into an unescorted AK and torpedoed it, setting it ablaze and causing heavy damage.

The SS Tautog, 21 miles NW of Rabaul, was attacked by 5 X PG. The sub managed to avoid being damaged by deft handling by her skipper.

The SS Hake, 37 miles E of Balikpapan, was located by 3 X PG and 2 X PC. The attack was ineffectual as the sub managed to dive below the settings used by it's tormenters.

Koepang was attacked by 19 X B-25J and the flak damaged 4 of them while the bombs managed light damage to the air field, 2 X Sally were destroyed and ground troops took light losses.

Port Moresby was pounced on by 85 X B-17E and they lost a bomber while 7 others were damaged. Once again the port was targeted and the damage done to it was moderate and the troops had light casualties. Numerous secondary explosions occurred and the AK, AP and APD there were repeatedly hit by bombs causing fires and heavy damage. Later damage assessment flights noted that the 3 ships had succumbed and were no more.

The Hopei Militia Division is very slowly trying to escape from the Sining area and while it is strung out on the march the Helens, 11 of them, came again. Losses were light.

Luganville saw 2 Replenishment TFs, an escort CVE TF, 3 MSW TFs, Ed's Old Gals and a CVTF all depart in the dead of night. More ships are to follow tomorrow and then more transports will finally load for the assault on Guadalcanal and later Tulagi. Those troops already aboard ships have noted the activity and the prospect of something finally happening is electric to them.

“I tell ya with all of those ships leaving and more moving to the docks the big show is on,” the man says to Sam. Another chimes in with, “Yeah and I hope the Marines get to be the lucky guys to go in first.” Sam silently ponders what all of this means to him and though life on board this ship is disgusting at least he's alive.

“Gunny have you seen all of this?” asks Slim. “The brass have finally gotten off of their rears and decided to do something.” Gunny nods and wonders if this time the show is really on or not.

FDR was informed that Operation King is in motion and that all assets will be at sea shortly. He wonders why all of a sudden a plan that was all but tossed out is now in motion. He silently prays that it meets with success and contributes to the swift completion of the defeat of Japan.

No mail today and Sandy wonders if this means that the flood of letters has stopped or it's just a temporary disruption in the flow of them. She takes a walk in the mountains with he friend, keeping close to the trail, not wanting to get caught in a sudden weather change.

The classes to acquaint the men with their new machines continue and there is no end to the flow of material. “I wonder when we get to see these beauties,” one man says. Another wonders aloud, “I was always taught that anything to good to be true isn't true. I want to see these planes and then when we're flying in them I'll become a believer.” Gil quietly goes about his duties and wonders where all of this will end up sending him.

Combat

The SS Pompon, 15 miles E of Vella Lavella, turned the tables on 5 X PG that were hunting her when she managed to feed 1 of them a fish causing heavy damage and fires. The hapless craft went under shortly thereafter.

The SS O16, 19 miles W of Singapore, was attacked by 5 X DD and underwent a brutal depth charge attack. The sub suffered moderate systems damage and the flooding is severe. She will try to make it to a safe port, but having to run on the surface in hostile waters only compounds an already grave situation.

Mandalay was bombed by 117 X Liberator VI and 24 X P-38G. The AA fire was extremely light and inaccurate as only a lone bomber was damaged as the base was heavily pummeled and troops had heavy losses.

The Japanese punching bag known as the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was attacked by 37 X B-25J and 10 X P-40N. The unit had moderate casualties and all of the Chinese planes retired intact.

The 20th Road Construction Battalion, near Mandalay, was attacked by 41 X B-25J and 11 X Thunderbolt II. A lone bomber sustained damage and the Japanese had moderate losses.

Hopei Militia Division was once more subjected to a bombing by 8 X Helen. Casualties were very light, but these attacks are awful on the retreating unit's morale.

The CL Helena departed Luganville as part of the screen for 2 CVs and a CVL heading for the Solomons. Bill sits in his chair on the bridge thinking back to what the prewar Navy was like in comparison to today's force. He has no doubts as to why the IJN is avoiding a direct conflict with the USN.

The ships continue to load and then ride at anchor at Luganville. The troops are itching for a fight as that means that they will get off of the ships. It's not intolerable, but getting there quickly.

In Gil's classes the men have worked together on some things and their instructor tells them that they will be departing for Clovis, New Mexico for flight training in the B-29. This causes a stir among the men. They are eager to get their hands on this wonder plane. They also want to know where they are ultimately going to be based. Will they be fighting Japan or Germany? So many questions and no answers as the whole project is top secret. Gil and the other crewmen are getting to know one another better all of the time as they eat, sleep and study together. This is the army way of taking the individual and turning him into a part of the unit.

Again not even 1 letter and Sandy is getting better at taking it in stride. Dave has little to do as people are using their vehicles less and less. One of Dave's friends stopped by this morning and he was riding a bicycle, not an easy task in this terrain.

Pete and Sylvia Continue their lives like newly weds. They love each other very much and he keeps telling her to stop working because she's pregnant. She always responds with, “Stop worrying, you're like an old lady.” Then they laugh.

In the English Channel a German torpedo boat flotilla sinks the RN cruiser Charybdis and the DD Limborne.

Combat

A raid on the harbor at Tulagi was made by 124X B-24D, of which 4 were damaged by flak. The target sustained moderate damage and some secondary explosions were claimed, though with so many bombs exploding it was hard to determine what really happened.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was once more bombed by 22 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N. No planes were damaged and the unit had heavy losses.

The IJA 1st Hvy Field Artillery Regiment, near Mandalay, was bombed by 54 X B-25J and 11 X Thunderbolt II. 2 bombers were damaged by AA and the unit sustained heavy casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was under observation by 2 X Dinah when 11 X Helen showed up and dumped their loads on the unit causing moderately light losses.

The shipyards continue to strain to repair and upgrade ships. New vessels come into service almost every day and in about 3 months the first 2 of a new class of BB will be going into the Pacific. These new ships are the fastest of the fast BBs.

“So the warships head out and we stay here in our floating, stinky, cramped transports,” the man says. Another throw in his 2 cents and the grumbling goes on and on. Sam agrees, but keeps his mouth shut. He was warned by an uncle who had served in the Russian Army prior to World War I that you never, ever volunteer for anything and you keep your mouth shut. “You don't need to look for trouble in the army, it will find you,” he said. Sam keeps that in mind as it's served him well so far in this war. The thought of combat scares him. The thought of not doing his job and letting down his buddies scares him even more.

One of the men in Gunny's platoon has been extremely lucky and has won a rather large amount of money from playing poker. He has hired 2 men from his squad to act as body guards to protect him from being robbed. Slim laughs at the man and says, “Will they protect you on the beach too? If you're dead the money won't do you any good.” The man bribes his way off of the ship and manages to arrange for the money to be wired to his parents in Midland, Texas. He hopes to go into business and these winnings will be the tool to make that dream come true, if he can survive the war.

Aboard the Helena a drill was just run and the Damage Control parties did well. Bill has no illusions about combat and not suffering for it. An instructor at Annapolis told his class that if he sees the enemy, the enemy can see him. If he fires on the enemy, the enemy will surely be firing back. He wonders if the radar is as good as he's been told for gun direction. He knows how good it is at giving early detection of aircraft.

The Russians took Melitopal.

Mandalay was raided by 121 X Liberator VI and 23 X P-38G. A single bomber was damaged by flak as the base was very heavily damaged. Casualties among the troops were thought to have been heavy.

Lautem was hit by 101 X B-25J, 12 X Kittyhawk III and 18 X P-40N. The Japanese had no planes in the air, but AA fire accounted for destroying 4 bombers and damaging 29 others. The air field was lightly damaged while the port took light damage also. The were numerous reports of secondary explosions and casualties were placed at heavy.

Port Moresby was bombed by 48 X B-24D, of which 13 were damaged by ground fire. A Dinah was left burning as the air field was lightly damaged and casualties were very light.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was dealt another blow as 27 X B-25J and 11 X P-40N caused moderate losses to the unit.

The 20th Road Construction Battalion, at Mandalay, was attacked by 24 X B-25J and 9 X Thunderbolt II. A bomber was damaged as the unit sustained heavy casualties.

The Hopei Militia Division was attacked by 15 X Helen and it had light losses.

The submarine O16 is losing her fight for survival as no headway is being made against the flooding.

“You know what amazed me the most about yesterday?” Slim asks Gunny. Gunny shakes his head and Slim continues, “Now that we're going somewhere soon all of the guys are getting religion. It doesn't matter which one, just to pay. Me, I'm going to die and I haven't been the most perfect of people so where I land is where I belong.” Gunny mutters something as he pats Slim on the shoulder and moves off.

The Flying Deuces are back to their normal routine of CAP duties. Stick has the day off and he plays some ping pong with some of the Sea Bees. “Where the hell did you get the table?” he asked them. The answer was don't ask. He wonders how they managed to get it here, but doesn't ask. They are the darnedest bunch of guys and before he leaves they ask him what outfit he's with. He answers and says goodbye and thanks them for the game. That night a case of beer arrives with a note from the Sea Bees for Stick. “Stop back anytime and bring your friends” the note says.

Mail call was held today, but Gil got shut out. He was looking forward to mail from his sisters or even better, Elaine. One of the guys in another crew is a new daddy and all are busy congratulating him. Funny, thinks Gil, that with the war and all how we forget about normal things.

Today the Japanese opened the infamous Burma to Siam railroad.

Combat

The SS Dace, 33 miles NW of Rabaul, torpedoed a PC that was part of a group hunting her. The other PC and 2 X MSW located and pounded the Dace for over an hour before giving up the hunt. The stricken PC did sink quickly, but now the Dace has moderate systems damage and flooding to contend with as she makes for Luganville.

The SS Kingfish, 13 miles N of Munda Point, underwent a similar experience as the sub put a torpedo into a PC and then underwent a depth charge attack. The PC broke in half and was gone in moments.

Tavoy was under a CAP of 3 X Rufe when 24 X P-38J came roaring in low. All 3 Rufes were shot down and the AA damaged 4 of the Lightnings.

Mandalay was raided by 31 X B-24J and 21 X P-38G. The base took moderate damage and light casualties. All of the planes left undamaged.

Jaluit was bombed by 31 X B-24J, of which flak damaged. All of the bombs missed the target. A short time later 54 X B-25J came calling and 6 were damaged by the ground fire. The port had light damage.

Port Moresby was hit by 45 X B-17E, 8 damaged by ground fire, and the air field sustained moderately light damage and a Dinah was destroyed on the ground

The IJA 18th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment, at Mandalay, was attacked by 39 X B-25J and 10 X Thunderbolt II. A bomber was damaged and the unit had moderate losses.

The New Chinese Corps was bombed by 11 X Helen and had light casualties.

Maloelap was struck by 3 X PB4Y, all of whom were damaged, as they did very light damage to the air field.

The SS Runner, 47 miles NW of Tulagi, hit an AK with 2 fish. The MSWs in attendance never got a sniff of the sub's location.

Though the O16 has managed to successfully transit the Malacca Strait her pumps are barely able to keep up with the flooding. Her deck is awash and only the hatch in the sail offers fresh air to the men working inside of her.

“We're still just sitting here on our duffs and the men are, to put it mildly, restless. The conditions are awful and getting worse daily and when we want to know when we shove off the answer is 'I don't know'. This is going to ruin our fighting edge as surely as I stand here in front of you sir,” says Gunny to the general. The general thanks him for his being so honest and dismisses Gunny. Later at a meeting the general states that his division's morale is going into the toilet and if they can't sail now the whole op should be scrapped.

The USN continues towards trouble as they hope to clear the mines in the Solomons, deal heavy blows to the defenses and in general prep Guadalcanal and Tulagi for invasion.

Ed's Old Gals are steaming with the MSW TFs to cover them and to lend fire support where needed to suppress shore defenses. He's not happy with this assignment as his ships are lumbering giants heading into confined waters. He remarked in a meeting today that “it's like bringing the bulls into a china shop.”

Stick's plane is not ready and the armorer has taken the time to resight the plane's guns. His ground crew takes special care of him because he treats them with respect. The off bottle doesn't seem to hurt either.

Since the liberations the troops of SWPAC have been refitting and resting. Where and how to use them is a big question. With large concentrations of Japanese troops close by it has been decided to prepare for the next operation, but to await the outcome of the other Allied plans, now in motion.

A hospital ship arrived in Liverpool with 790 wounded POWs repatriated from Germany.

The US 8th Air Force attacked Bremen with it's greatest effort to date.

The SS Gudgeon, 52 miles NE of Jesselton, tried to attack a TK, but found herself under attack by the 3 PC escort instead. The sub sustained light systems damage and moderate flooding and will now head back to the barn for repairs.

Rangoon was bombed by 27 X B-24J, 11 of which were damaged by AA. The air field had moderate damage, multiple secondary explosions and moderate casualties.

Mandalay was targeted by 6 X Liberator VI and 22 P-38G. A bomber was damaged and the base had light damage and losses.

Kwajalein was raided by 20 X PB4Y, 5 damaged by flak. The air strip was lightly damaged and the troops had light casualties.

Maloelap was raided by 3 X PB4Y, 1 damaged. A couple of hits to the runway were claimed.

The SS Pargo, 49 miles NW of Marcus Island5, torpedoed a MSW, sinking it. No to much later an ML tried to attack the sub.

“We're still sitting here damn it,” is rapidly the most common thing heard in the way of complaint among the troops as their transports are loaded and awaiting sailing orders that never seem to come.

Bill takes a tour of the ship and is getting soaked as they plough through a line squall. Seeing their skipper soaking wet, just like them, cheers the men up. Bill doesn't end his tour until he finishes off in the bowels of the Helena. The heat in the engineering spaces dries him quickly and then he's soaked again from sweat.

Phil listens to a section chief complaining about a repair that was supposed to have been done, but never happened. Finally Phil says, “You can fix it?” The man nods and Phil says, “Do it then.” Once the man departs he turns to Frank and asks, “Did you know about this or was it reported to anybody?” Frank tells him no and makes a mental note to speak to the officer responsible. He'll do it in private so as not to undermine the man's authority, but will also be firm enough to have it known that this type of thing can not happen.

Elaine sits in the living room reading a letter from Gil. He says that he misses her and that his trip was long and uncomfortable. She gets a pen and paper and then heads off to her room to respond.

FDR presides over the meeting concerning the final plans to take the Marianas from the Japanese. All there believe that Saipan is the toughest nut to crack, but with Guam and Tinian in the fold the Japanese can be bombed, shelled and starved before the invasion.

Field Marshall Von Kluge is not in command of Army Group Center any longer due to a car crash.

The SS Gunnel was attacked, 72 miles S of Kagoshima, but she escaped being damaged.

The SS Finback torpedoed an AP 23 miles S of Truk, setting it ablaze.

The SS Mingo, 18 miles off of Tokyo, tried to attack 3 MLs. They turned the tables on the sub and she got the short end of the stick. The Mingo will now attempt to make it back to Wake Island with moderate systems damage and moderately heavy flooding.

Lautem was swept by 56 X P-38Gs and the flak killed 1 and damaged 18 others while casualties dealt out to the Japanese troops by the strafing aircraft were moderate.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 10 X Helen and the unit had light losses.

Marcus Island was raided by 37 X PB4Y, 15 damaged, but the bombs all missed the intended target.

Maloelap was visited by 6 X PB4Y, 3 damaged. They managed a lone bomb hit on the runway.

The SS Tarpon slipped her moorings and makes for her patrol area in the Solomons.

Palawan idles away at Noumea awaiting sailing orders. Red and Claire have been spending afternoons together, but she is jealous of Lucky and all of the attention the dog gets wherever he goes. She also complains that Red dotes on the dog. Red replies, “You know that I enjoy being with you or I wouldn't be here. My feelings towards you continue to grow stronger and stronger. You have to understand that Lucky is more than just my dog. He's a ship's and crew's good luck charm. You'll have to accept Lucky or I'll have to let you go.” Claire can't believe that he would choose a dog over her and in a huff she stomps off with a “I hope you and your dog will be very happy together.” Red, mouth agape, just stares after her in a state of disbelief. Later that night he relates the day's happens to Cookie who mutters something about women being complicated creatures.

Major Smith and the rest of the 1st Marine Division are getting more and more antsy. He speaks to the regimental CO and the best answer is that “we just have to wait it out.”

Jeff and Bill discuss the Helena, the war and their girlfriends. Command is lonely, but Bill thinks that he's been lucky to fist have Frank on the O'Bannon and now Jeff as his execs. They have much in common, though Bill suspects that ultimately Frank will go higher within the Navy because he knows how to play the game. Jeff is considering staying in the Navy after the war is over, if they'll have a place for him. Bill voices the same thoughts and then his mind wanders off to Sandy and the northern California mountains. Maybe life without the Navy wouldn't be the end of the world. Jeff excuses himself as it's almost time for his watch.

Stick hears a rumor about some new planes that will be making the scene in the not to distant future. He's already heard about the Thunderbolt being a huge, powerful and tough bird with a big punch and now he's learning about a newer model Lightning with longer legs and better performance. “Nothing for us Marines?” he asks. The answer is that there is talk about a new Corsair, but nothing about what's different. Stick wonders if he'll ever get his hands on one of them.

The “Lucky 11” are scheduled to travel to Clovis New Mexico. They'll depart from Lincoln tomorrow afternoon and as Gil says to Gel, the flight engineer, “Only those in heaven have a clue as to when we'll get there.”

Rangoon was raided by 42 X B-25J, 12 damaged by AA. The airfield had moderate damage, a large secondary explosion was reported and ground troops lost heavily.

Mandalay was hit by 121 X Liberator VI, 2 X Spitfire VIII and 24 X P-38G. A bomber was damaged in the attack that dealt out very heavy damage to the base, numerous secondary explosions and very heavy casualties.

Kwajalein was targeted by 20 X PB4Y, of which 4 were damaged. The air strip was lightly damaged, a secondary explosion was noted and the troops had light losses.

The Yokosuka 2nd SNLF was hammered by 22 X B-25J and 12 X P-40N for moderate casualties. All planes were undamaged.

Marcus Island was hit by 21 X PB4Y, 11 damaged. They managed to lightly damage the port.

The O16 continues to limp towards home and an exhausted crew takes heart at their having made minor inroads versus the flooding.

The MSWs of Operation King make their way towards a refueling point and then it's off to do their dangerous business in the minefields. Maybe this time out the USN can do a better job of protecting them.

The troops are aboard their transports and waiting for the fleet to shove off. Gunny comes by and gives Slim a poke and says, “You know that I'm going to be relying on you to keep that MG section of yours to protect our flanks.” Slim gives him a nod and a smile. Marines love their MGs and what better place for them than on the flanks to keep them secure.

“Hey, Sam tell me something. Are you afraid?” Sam looks at the guy from his squad and laughingly says that he's scared out of his mind and that if they never get off of this ship he jump. “Not exactly what I meant, but I get ya.”

The Flying Deuces have the day off. Planes are being worked on and another squadron is on CAP. The pilot laze around while the mechanics toil over the aircraft. Stick visit the mechanics and asks if there's anything he can do to help. “Some cold beer would hit the spot,” comes an answer, “Short of that how about some water?” Stick is off and 20 minutes later returns with the water. “What no beer? Hell I want to work for the Sea Bees.” All of them share the laugh.

Dave reads the newspaper and in it there is an old picture of one of the new battleships being launched. “That New Jersey looks pretty big,” he mutters and another man looks over his shoulder and grunts in agreement.

The SS Corvina, 38 miles NE of Kagoshima, managed to get inside the protective ring of 4 X DD and torpedo the TK, causing heavy damage and fires. Just before the sun began to set the Corvina, now12 miles E of Kagoshima, found another juicy TK and it was only being escorted by MSWs. As the the courses were converging the sub only had to wait and then the TK got hit by 2 torpedoes.

The SS Herring, 49 miles E of Tokyo, was attacked by 3 DDs. The sub managed to evade the depth charge attacks and escaped without any damage.

The DMS Elliot located a mine field at Tassaforanga. The sweeping ops for Operation King are now in full swing.

Rangoon was targeted by 49 X B-25J and flak accounted for a bomber and damaged 7 others. The base was moderately damaged and troops sustained light losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 10 X Helen and negligible losses resulted.

Aboard the O16 the conference is about the exhausted crew, the balky pumps that keep quitting and the distance to be covered. The issue is in doubt and the situation is grave.

Cookie is planning a special meal for Halloween. He even managed to fashion a costume out of some spare clothes lying around. Nobody knows of his plans, except for the ever curious Lucky and he won't talk.

The ships have been issued orders to standby. Excitement runs through them as it is expected that sailing orders will be issued at any time now. Sam and the rest of his squad are no exceptions. They are afraid, but they want to see the war done so that they can go home and sitting here certainly won't get it over with.

FDR, in another one of the endless meetings, is told that Operation King is underway and that mine sweeping of Tulagi has begun. He tells the assembled men that it is about time and then attention turns to the CENPAC area.

Gil and the rest of the Lucky 11 are dozing on another one of the endless train rides. It is dirty and uncomfortable, but boredom rules and the men sleep fitfully.

Stick was invited by his Sea Bee pals to a party on the beach and they all proceeded to get very drunk. Nobody seems to care to much about getting in trouble as the prevailing attitude is, “What can they do to me? Send me off to war?”

The SS Herring unsuccessfully attacked a couple of PGs and a few PCs that have been stalking her.

The SS Corvina attacked a TK and hit it with a torpedo. The ASW screen was made up of MSWs and might as well have been rowboats.

The Hopei Militia Division was struck by 10 X Helen and had extremely light casualties.

O16 continues to limp towards port and the flooding got worse today as the shoring of a forward bulkhead started to give way.

The SS Dace continue towards port and her crew is becoming optimistic about their survival.

Stick arrives at the mechanic's Halloween party dressed as a aircraft mechanic with a heavy dose of grease and oil on his clothes. Before to long they are well on their way to getting drunk, which is OK as Stick isn't scheduled to fly for the next 2 days. That's what the duty roster showed as of when he last checked it at least. His attitude is gradually deteriorating, just like everyone else's. It's the boredom that has become the enemy. More pilots show up at the party when they hear the noise and get curious. They find Stick passed out.

The troop transports, supply ships and their escorts began leaving Luganville after sundown. Slim is suffering from mixed emotions. He hates being stuck on the ship, longs for the prospect of being able to get off of it, but a fight with the Japs is something he dreads. Memories of fighting them until they were all dead haunts him.

The train continues to rattle it's way across the country. Gil listens to Capt Jack, who is now being call Jake by crew members, talk of flying B-17s. He says that, “They are slow, colder than you could imagine and tough to bring down. The only thing is their range isn't that great and the bomb load could be bigger.” He longs to get his hands on the new planes.

Sandy got no letters again today and Dave promises to check at the Post Office for her tomorrow as he'll be heading into town. It will be the 1st and he'll be able to buy more coffee so the trip is automatic. Sandy thanks him and says she'll stay at home, minding the store.

FDR confers with General George C Marshall and agrees that orders for the 25th and 40th Army Divisions should be cut sending them back to CENPAC with a stop to take Eniwetok on the way, if Operation King doesn't end up needing them or King falls apart again. Marshall says that an advance through CENPAC's area will be more productive anyway. “We should just kick the damned door in on the Japanese,” he says. Then the conversation turns to Europe.

Lautem was hammered by 108 X B-25J who were escorted by 12 X Kittyhawk III and 18 X P-40N. The was no opposition other than flak, which knocked down 3 bombers and damaged 23 others. The airfield took heavy damage, numerous secondary explosions were triggered and ground troops had very heavy casualties.

Marcus Island was raided by 42 X PB4Y, of which AA downed 1 and damaged 12 others. The air strip had light damage, a few secondary explosions were reported, 2 X Mavis were trashed on the ground and casualties were thought to have been light.

Kwajalein was raided by 21 X PB4Y, 6 of which were damaged by AA. Light damage was done to the air base and casualties were also light.

The IJA 18th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment, at Mandalay, was attacked by 46 X B-25J and 9 X Thunderbolt II. 4 bombers were damaged by ground fire and the unit sustained moderate losses.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was visited by 7 X Helen and had very light casualties.

The SS Flying Fish, 142 miles SE of Truk, spotted an AK with a lone MSW as an escort. The sub moved in for the kill and placed 3 torpedoes into the hapless target. It didn't take long for the AK to disappear and the MSW ran like hell, leaving the survivors in the water.

Another CVTF departed Luganville to take up station to protect the fleet.

With the troops loaded and the MSWs all on their way the operation known as King is well underway and short of a naval disaster Guadalcanal will fall and then Tulagi. The following forces are committed to Operation King.

LCUs

1, 2 and 3 Marine Divisions
25, 37, 40, 43 and the Americal Divisions
147 RCT
1 NZ Brigade
72 and 183 FARs
1, 2, 3 and 4 Marine Raider Bns
1, 2 and 3 Marine Para Bns

All eyes in Washington are turned towards the SOPAC area and it's Operation King. In the meantime orders are cut and sitting in the eventuality that King is a bust.

Stick awakens with someone's foot jabbing him. “Go away, can't you see I'm dying?” he says. It's the wrong person as it's the exec of his squadron. Moments later he is picked up and carried to the water's edge where he is unceremoniously dumped. “Hey! What the hell?” They are all laughing at him as they help poor Stick to his feet. He's told the duty roster was changed and he's scheduled to fly in an hour, but they'll cover for him.

Dave returned empty handed as there were no letters at the Post Office. She's OK with it, though she's disappointed. She has become used to the erratic mail and decided that erratic is better than none. Dave is pleased as he has managed to obtain enough coffee to last for at least 2 weeks.

The train has stopped somewhere and nobody seems to care. The stop is so that the men on board can have some chow. Everybody is sore, tired and hungry. The joke is that the rickety train has been stolen from a museum collection. At least they can stretch and eat something. Somebody says, “The country is so big that maybe we should let the Japs invade us and then let them get lost out here in the middle of nowhere.” The men laugh. Gil is so tired, but after eating he finds a spot to flop down and he writes a letter to Elaine. The call goes out for them all to get back on the train less than an hour after they stopped. “At least this ride can't last forever,” somebody says.

All of the German land links with the Crimea have been severed.

Combat

The SS Triton, 77 miles NE of Saipan, unsuccessfully attacked a pair of AKs accompanied by 3 destroyers.

Mandalay was bombed by 123 X Liberator VI, 3 X Spitfire VIII and 29 X P-38G. Flak was light and inaccurate as only 3 of the bombers were damaged while the base was plastered for extremely heavy damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and the Japanese troops sustained very heavy casualties.

Marcus Island was visited by 38 X PB4Y, of which 1 was destroyed and 10 others damaged by AA fire. The air strip was lightly damaged and casualties were placed ant light.

The IJA 8th AF Construction Battalion, at Mandalay, was attacked by 24 X B-25J and 7 X Thunderbolt II were covering the bombers. A Mitchell was downed and 3 others were damaged by flak as the inflicted heavy casualties on the unit.

The Japanese attacked the MSW TF near Tulagi with 17 X Judy, 11 X Zeke, 8 X George and 4 X Jack. There were 19 X Hellcat on LRCAP and they ripped into the Japs downing a Judy, 4 X Zeke, 4 X George and 4 X Jack at a cost of 5 Hellcats destroyed and another damaged. The MSW Sheldrake absorbed 2 bomb hits that mangled and set her ablaze. Another attack by 17 X Judy, 15 X Zeke, 14 X George and 11 X Jack ran into 21 X Hellcat and the resulting brawl saw 2 X Judy shot down, 6 X Zeke flamed (another damaged), 8 X George splashed and 8 X Jack went down at the cost of 8 X Hellcat shot down and 5 others damaged. The MSW Sheldrake, which was already reeling from the last attack was hit by 4 more bombs and the abandon ship order was given. The other vessels in the TF plucked the survivors out of the water as quickly as possible. Thus begins the fight to protect the MSWs doing their unglamorous , but crucial work.

The O16 continues to limp back to port and though the flooding is very bad, the shoring seems to have steadied things. One of the Dutch sailors was heard to remark that if he survives this voyage he will leave the submarine service and learn how to use a rifle because at least then when you're hit you are on dry land.

The Lucky 11, along with many others switched trains today and though they thought that it wasn't possible they have gone from bad to worse. The train wheezes along through the desert, making water stops along the way. “Kind of makes Nebraska look good,” says one of the guys about the bleak desert landscape passing by.

Ed paces in his cabin knowing that the Japanese will try and slip surface ships into the mine sweepers. His and another TF are deployed to try and prevent this from happening. He's aware of the aircraft constantly searching and the subs on patrol, but his gut tells him that the IJN can make a high speed run and create mayhem at night if they get lucky. His job is to make sure that they don't get lucky. He hopes that the IJN doesn't have subs deployed in the area as the Old Gals are not really suited for ops in these confined waters.

Bill orders the course change as the CVTF moves away from the Solomons for the night. They will be back on station launching CAPs and searches before dawn. He then heads off for something to eat and then writes a letter to Sandy.

Phil's Replenishment TF will meet with the carriers so that their escorts can refuel. He watches the lumbering CVEs and wonders if they are the ones carrying the replacement aircraft or providing the air cover for them. He joins a few other officers in the wardroom in a card game, confident with Frank running the O'Bannon.

Combat

The MSW TFs have located and started sweeping minefields at Tulagi and Guadalcanal while Hellcats keep a watchful eye overhead and surface combat TFs lurk to try and prevent the IJN from disrupting things. Coastal guns at Lunga erupt and 5 MSWs are savaged. At Tulagi the same happens to 5 more MSWs. If the mines can't be swept will Operation King fail or be called off yet again?

Lunga's airfield was attacked by 135 X B-24D and 95 X B-24J and they ran into a CAP of 60 X Zeke, 24 X George and 15 X Jack. A fighter sweep was supposed to have proceeded the arrival of the heavies, but they find themselves on their own. They keep their defensive boxes tight and the Japanese rip through the formations with lead flying all over the place. 7 X Zeke were shot down (46 damaged), 3 X George were destroyed (18 damaged) and 5 X Jack will not return home (5 damaged). 40 X B-24D were downed (55 damaged) and 34 X B024J were scratched (27 damaged) in their attempt to knock out the base. The airfield was heavily damaged, numerous secondary explosions were observed by the snooping flying boats, of which 2 were damaged, ground troops had moderately heavy losses.

The MSWs off of Tulagi were jumped by 19 X Judy, 10 X Zeke, 7 X George and 5 X Jack who in turn were bounced by 17 X Hellcat. 4 X Judy went down, 9 X Zeke destroyed, 3 X George splashed (another damaged) and 5 X Jack were shot down. A Hellcat was lost and 2 others were damaged while the MSW Token was hit by 3 bombs, setting her ablaze with heavy damage. 3 X MSW quickly sink while others fight for their lives. In the end all but 1 of the MSWs are gone and Operation King hangs helplessly in the balance.

The TF 78 miles N of Tulagi was attacked by 7 X Betty and 3 X Tony and the LRCAP was not in position to intercept. The ships threw up a steel curtain that downed 2 X Betty and damaged 3 others. 5 of the torpedo bombers executed a classic anvil strike and the CL St. Louis was struck by a torpedo. Another strike of 21 X Betty and 28 X Frances arrived and the TF threw everything at them, including the kitchen sink which accounted for 3 X Betty downed (15 damaged) and 2 X Frances destroyed (24 damaged). All of this was to no avail as there was still no air cover and when all was quiet the CA Quincy had absorbed 2 torpedo hits which caused fires and heavy damage, the CA San Francisco was struck by 3 fish and is a blazing hulk the will sink in short order. The DD Mahan got hammered by 2 torpedoes and the catastrophic damage caused her to sink quickly.

Mandalay was bombed by 42 X B-24J, 3 X Spitfire VIII and 23 X P-38G. A bomber is destroyed and another damaged by the AA while the base is moderately damaged. Japanese casualties were placed at light.

Lautem was raided by 55 X B-25J, 2 X Kittyhawk III and 17 X P-40N. 4 of the Mitchells went down and 24 others were damaged by flak. The airfield was moderately damaged and casualties were thought to have been heavy for the ground units.

The O 16 is getting very close to Trimcomalee, but it'll take another day or 2 to get there and the flooding isn't worse and not improving either.

FDR looks at the reports and sighs before he says, “Gentlemen, unless you can tell me in all certainty that Operation King can go forward and succeed I think that it's time to toss it on a back burner. I want the orders sent out to send those 2 divisions to take Eniwetok on their way to Wake Island. Why have a reserve force for an op that is going nowhere? The Navy will shift it's strength to Wake as I believe it's time to kick the door in on the Japanese, as you put it George. If the Japanese shift their forces once we hit the Marianas then maybe Operation King can be reincarnated, but until then let's cast our eyes elsewhere.” Nobody objects and the orders will go out in the morning. How fast SOPAC responds will be seen.

Ed is galled by the news that he reads in the radio intercept that was just handed to him. “The MSWs got clobbered by coastal guns and planes while the other surface force got beat up by planes too. We have no choice, but to remain here on station until ordered to do otherwise.” The officers are dismissed and they leave to go about their duties. Ed wonders how the minefields can effectively be dealt with. If the sweeps go in the get shot up. If we go in to bombard those coastal guns we hit the mines. He's to aggravated with the news of the day and the problems that are presenting themselves to get any sleep so he take a walk to the ship's fantail and stares at the stars, thinking.

Word has spread through the fleet of the 1, 2 punch delivered today by the Japanese and morale, while not suffering, has dipped a bit and the men are itching for a shot at revenge. Aboard the Helena Bill has heard several of the crew pass remarks about the people running the war need to get more aggressive, amongst other things. He agrees with their views, but of course keeps it to himself. He writes to Sandy telling her that he looks forward to leave and some time with her in the mountains, away from the war.

The troop transports are circling and Slim comments that something seems amiss. Gunny nods and says, “Don't be surprised if we end up back where we started.”

Sam asks if anybody knows why they seem to be going in circles, but there is no answer for him. He's in no rush for combat, but is smart enough to know that the war can't be ended without fighting. He has a smoke and just stares at other ships that are in view.

When all was done for the day the burning questions were where are the USN planes? Why didn't the fighter sweep get launched? Where was the strike against Lunga's airfield? What was the LRCAP doing when it should've protected the surface ships? Today was a day that will go down in the annuls of history as a black day for the Allied war effort in the PTO and more specifically the shame of the USN.

A massive Russian offensive from the Dnieper bridgehead north of Kiev erupted today.

The USAAF hit Wilhemshaven with 400 bombers and 600 fighters.

Combat

Port Moresby was raided by 16 X B-17E, 48 X B-24D and 58 X B-24J and to their happy eyes no Japanese fighters were aloft. The AA fire was moderate, but not terribly accurate as 4 Flying Forts, 3 X B-24D and 3 X B-24J were damaged as they dumped their loads on the airfield. Heavy damage to the base was done, some secondary explosions were observed, 7 X Zeke and 2 X Dinah were left destroyed at their revetments while troop losses were placed at heavy.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was bombed by 7 X Helen and the unit had light losses as a result.

Jaluit's port was attacked by 33 X B-25J and 46 X P-38G. 5 bombers were damaged by flak and no damage was done to the base.

Lunga's turn to pay the piper came today as the CAP of 52 X Zeke, 20 X George and 6 X Jack was challenged by 198 X SBD, 105 X TBF, 90 X TBM, 45 X F4F-4 and 70 X F6F. The ensuing melee was bloody for both sides as 55 X Zeke, 19 George, 18 X Jack and 5 X Judy were destroyed in the air and on the ground while the base's airfield sustained moderately heavy damage, the port had heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions and the ground troops suffered very heavily. This came at the cost of 5 X SBD shot down (24 damaged), 3 X TBF gone (7 damaged), a TBM downed (7 damaged), 15 Wildcats killed and 23 Hellcats destroyed (6 damaged).

Amid much relief the O16 has tied up at Trimcomalee and repairs will begin immediately and then she'll be sent to a proper repair facility.

Many of the warships that were assigned to Operation King will now make their way to yards for overdue upgrades while others will go to new basing.

FDR has just concluded a meeting of top military brass and it's been decided that given the current lack of MSWs and DMs that Operation King will go down in history as stillborn. There is no way to keep out the IJN, Japanese LBA and deal with the coastal batteries while huge minefields exist and the sweepers are so vulnerable. Admiral King stated, “The risks involved are no longer justified by the possible gains.” Somebody threw in that the number of Japanese troops on Guadalcanal and Tulagi was daunting too and from the back a Marine could be heard muttering, “To many for the dog faces, maybe.”

The troop transports head back to Luganville along with many warships.

Bill is only half surprised that the orders for a cessation to the operation has been passed. Stupid fools expect every op to go smoothly, he thinks.

Ed is fit to be tied. The Japanese have managed to nip the op in the bud and he's powerless to do anything about it. He orders a course change and the Old Gals head towards Luganville. Ed wonders what comes next and what he'll do to keep his crews sharp after this disappointment.

Slim and many others feel both relieved and frustrated. They'll be getting off of these ships and then who knows what is next.

Sam wonders why they are going back and others around him are happy that they've managed to avoid combat for a while longer. What they don't know is that they're not getting off of the ships, but the ships will replenish their stores and then carry their cargo to Eniwetok. From there it is planned that after the island falls the 2 divisions will refit at Wake and prep for the Marianas.

Yesterday Operation Harvest, in Poland, killed 42,000 Jews.

The US 5th Army took Isernia, 50 miles north of Naples and joined the 8th Army.

The Russians made a breakout.

Combat

The SS Albacore tried to get a shot in on a few DDs, but failed. No position was given in the report.

Port Moresby was raided by 41 X B-17E, 45 X B-24D and 44 X B-24J and the Japanese fighters rose to oppose them with 8 X Zeke, 11 X Jack, 5 X Tojo, and 4 X Tony. 7 X Zeke were shot down (3 damaged), 6 X Jack were destroyed, a Tojo went down (3 damaged) and 5 X Tony were scrapped . These numbers included some planes on the ground. The bombers paid their dues with 3 X B-17 E damaged, 4 X B-24D downed (15 damaged) and 6 X B-24J destroyed (12 damaged). The airfield took moderately heavy damage, some secondary explosions and the troops had moderate casualties.

The 5th New Chinese Corps was hit by 10 X Helen and sustained light losses.

The CL St. Louis has made it back to Luganville and now repairs will be made so that she may make for a repair yard.

Stick is standing at the airfield and there is an argument going on with a Navy pilot. “Nice long runway you have here. This takes no skill to land on. Have you ever tried a carrier deck? How about in the rain? Maybe in a rough sea? No? In the dark then? Damn, you've got it easy. A flare on landing is like peeing, sitting down.” With that the Marines grow ominously quiet and the Navy man smiles and diffuses the situation by saying, “Hell boys we're all on the same side and I was just having a little fun.” The Marines lighten up and then he says, “Navy pilots are better though.” The men throw whatever they can grab at him and later they all share a laugh. Slim wonders about it and thinks that that guy just might be right. How could we ever operate these Corsairs from a carrier when we can't even see what's ahead of us?

Upon arrival at Clovis, New Mexico all of the men were more interested in seeing the planes than getting chow. Clovis Army Air Field looks like a forlorn spot and Gil wonders why the Army seems to have bases in such awful places. They are herded to the mess hall and fed. Once they are done there is an orientation class and the men are told to beware of scorpions and snakes. To a city boy like Gil this seems to be hell. He has to watch where he places his feet and check his boots before putting them on. What kind of place is this? When men start to grumble the man running the class tells them that this is paradise compared to some islands in the Pacific or bases in the Aleutians.

Sandy got a letter today and it told her of the brilliant display of stars at night on the ocean and that he wished that she had been there to share it with him. Maybe, the letter went on to say, that after the war they can experience it together.

Combat

At Bonin a Japanese AP struck a mine and was burning. Not to much later an AK escorted by 4 X MSW also struck a mine and suffered heavy damage and fires.

Rangoon was targeted by 55 X B-25J. Heavy and accurate AA fire claimed 4 bombers and damaged 10 others. The airfield was moderately damaged and casualties were moderate also. Later 31 X B-24J arrived to add to the carnage and they lost a plane and 13 more were damaged. They contributed additional moderate damage, reported some secondary explosions and casualties were placed at light.

Mandalay was bombed by 119 X Liberator VI, 6 X Spitfire VIII and 21 X P-38G. No planes were harmed and the airfield was very heavily hit, some secondary explosions were claimed and ground losses were heavy.

The Hopei Militia Division was once more the center of attention for 11 X Helen and the casualties were very light.

The SS Pompon, about 65 miles SE of Rabaul, tried to attack 5 X PG, but failed to achieve a favorable firing solution.

The SS Dace limped into Luganville and a collective sigh of relief is shared by her crew as the work gangs start in on her repairs.

Within a day and a half the Quincy is expected to reach Luganville. Her air umbrella and the ships that screen her are determined that she'll make it. Her crew continues to battle against collapsed bulkheads and are trying to clean up the broken body parts as they continue to repair their home. Many have died and more than 1 seaman has remarked that the Navy locked the chicken coop after the fox had his way in reference to the lack of air cover that fateful day.

The transports lumber towards Luganville and the men don't understand what is going on.

“That's it then. We send everything to the CENPAC area and if the chance appears we'll resurrect King.” FDR pushes back from his desk and an aide propels him from the Oval Office leaving the military brass to head back to their offices to attend to the details of kicking in the door on the Japanese.

The Allied troops continue to push forward through the jungles of Burma. They are going to rely on supplies that they capture to sustain the offensive and then they'll need Rangoon.

“They are huge!” more than one man exclaims as they gaze on the B-29s that their training will commence on. Gil walks around one of them staring at it. He can't remember ever having seen something this big that can move. They are allowed to enter the planes and he immediately locates his station and acquaints himself with it. “Will you look at this!” yells one of the crew and they join him and stare at the huge double bomb bays. “Boys, we're going to end the war with these babies.” says Sgt Gelman.

The Russians took Kiev and split the German 4th Panzer Army in 3.
