Combat

There was night time surface combat near Taipei when the IJN arrived with 2 X BB, 1 X CA, 2 X CL and 5 X DD catching the following AKs who were unloading troops.
Canada Victory 16 shell hits, 2 torpedo hits, sunk
Bartlesville Victory 14 shell hits, 1 torpedo hit, sunk
Cedar Rapids Victory 50 shell hits, 1 torpedo hit, sunk
Casualties were very heavy. The Japanese then spotted the AVD Heron and fed her 11 shell hits, sinking the Heron.

A naval bombardment of Wakkanai was executed by 4 X BB, 2 X CA, 1 X Cl and the DDs never fired a shot. The airfield was lightly damaged, the port took moderate damage, there were some secondary explosions of which most appeared to be fuel, 2 DDs were hit for heavy damage and were burning and personnel losses were heavy.

Akita was raided by 183 X B-29 (3 damaged), 64 X B-24D and 5 X P-51D who caused heavy damage to the heavy industry.

Victoria Point was hit by 25 X Liberator VI (7 damaged) for light airstrip damage, some secondary explosions and very light casualties.

Tavoy was struck by 29 X Beaufighter Mk 21 (3 damaged), 12 X Mosquito FB.VI, 64 X Thunderbolt II (4 damaged) and 24 X Spitfire VIII for moderate airfield damage and some secondary explosions were reported.

Bangkok's airfield was the target for 146 X Liberator VI (1 downed, 24 damaged) who inflicted very heavy damage, triggered a huge number of secondary explosions, destroyed 6 Topsys and there were very heavy troop losses.

Georgetown was under a CAP of 8 X Zero and 32 X Zeke when 64 X Mosquito FB.VI, 41 X Thunderbolt II (2 downed, 1 damaged) and 24 X P-47D arrived. All of the Zeros and 21 of the Zekes were splashed. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions observed, 4 X Frances and a Betty were destroyed and casualties were extremely light.

Manila was pounded by a pair of air raids for moderate port damage, a couple of secondary explosions and heavy losses. 12 TBMs (1 downed), 15 B-25Js (1 downed), 4 A-26Bs were damaged in the attacks. The IJA 61st Ind. Mixed Brigade was bombed by 70 X B-24J (10 damaged) for very heavy casualties.

At Naga the IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was attacked by 4 waves of planes that resulted in extremely heavy losses for the unit. 1 Corsair (1 downed), 1 Lightning, 9 Invaders and 3 Mitchells took damage in the raids. Artillery exchanges failed to harm the Allied forces and the Japanese absorbed heavy casualties.

At Taipei the 117th IJNAF Base Force had light losses and the Allies had a Mitchell damaged in an air attack. The Allied troops attacked again taking a bit more ground and moderate casualties while the Japanese had heavy losses.

Near Tarakan 12 X PB4Y attacked 2 AKs. 1 took a single bomb hit and the other was struck twice and was burning.

Tokyo was swept by 56 X P-51D who sliced into the gaggle of 40 X Zeke, 3 X George, 35 X Shinden, 14 X Frank and 10 X Tony. 15 Zekes, 3 Georges, 9 Shindens (2 damaged), 13 Franks and 10 Tonys were shot down at the cost of 10 Mustangs lost and 2 damaged.

Near Shanghai 3 X PB4Y and 31 X P-38J attacked a BB thought to have been the Kirishima. No hits were scored and a bomber was lost and another damaged by the AA fire. Another strike made up of 3 X PB4Y and 11 X P-38J attacked an AK and also failed to score.

11 miles S of Balikpapan the SS Sturgeon attacked 3 PCs, hitting 1 with a fish that set the craft on fire.

Stick is still vainly in search of that elusive first kill and he's been credited with 107 missions. “You haven't lost a lead so as far as I'm concerned you can fly my wing any time,” says one of the pilots. The rest of the guys there express their agreement and Stick thanks them, but says that he needs a kill to face the folks back home after the war.

Art was disappointed that the TF didn't arrive in time to attempt an intercept of the Japanese ships that caused havoc at Taipei, but now they are on the hunt for Japanese shipping in the waters around Okinawa.

Jay is wet for a change, no make that soaked. He never saw a place get so much rain before. Living in his hole is like living in a swimming pool, but it's cramped and filthy. Some mortar rounds impacted nearby today, but thankfully nobody was hurt. Soon, he thinks, it has to be soon or he'll be so water logged that when the order comes to attack the Japanese will hear him a mile away as he squishes forward.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade had heavy casualties from Allied planes. 8 Jugs were damaged in the attack.

The Japanese AKs 21 miles E of Balikpapan were being protected by 3 X Zeke when 21 X B-24J arrived. 2 Zekes were damaged as they were driven off by the bombers concentrated defensive fire and 2 bombers were damaged. The AKs were hit for the following:
AK Tokai Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire

Bill moved his usual mound of paper and then wrote a letter to Sandy. There's nothing happening as all of the other fast BBs except for 1 are of elsewhere hunting the IJN. He thinks to himself that this is almost as bad as being stationed at the Pentagon. He misses the action of the tin can and cruiser.

Today the rains let up a bit and Jay cursed because of it. His company was pulled off the line in the morning so that they could have a little rest and a hot meal. It started to rain and the guys stripped and started to wash themselves and Jay was one of the unfortunates that got caught lathered up when suddenly it stopped. The guys working the kitchen gave them some water so that they could rinse of a bit. Tonight Jay will sleep in a hammock and looks forward to the luxury of it as he flops into it. Hell, he thinks, there's even screening so that maybe tonight I won't get eaten alive by the bugs.

SS Tunny, 30 miles W of Pontianak, stalked 5 DDs and hit 1 with a torpedo that started a fire. The DDs then unsuccessfully hunted the sub.

Toyohara's port was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions and the Allies had a Mitchell damaged by ground fire in an air raid.

Victoria Point's AA defenses damaged 2 Liberator VIs as the bombers did very light damage to the airstrip, triggered a secondary explosion and inflicted light casualties.

Tavoy was subjected to a raid that saw 4 Beaufighter Mk 21s take damage while doing moderate damage to the airfield and causing some secondary explosions.

Manila was hit twice by Allied planes of which 6 TBMs, 5 Invaders (2 downed) and 7 Mitchells were damaged. Light damage was done to the port and there were light personnel losses. The IJA 61st Ind. Mixed Brigade had moderate casualties and 4 B-24Js were damaged in the air strike.

Gili Gili had very light damage done to it's airstrip by Allied aircraft. The IJA 21st Division had heavy casualties in an air attack.

At Naga the IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade had heavy losses and the Allies had 1 Mitchell and 4 invaders damaged in 3 air attacks on the unit. Japanese artillery futilely expending ordinance once again today and they had heavy casualties from the Allied barrages.

Near Taichu 5 Peggys tried and died to attack the Allied ships. The CAP of 5 X P-38J and 18 X P-47D made short work of them.

Kendari was attacked and the Allies had a PB4Y damaged. The airstrip was lightly damaged, there were a couple of secondary explosions and an AK was on fire and heavily damaged from 2 bomb hits.

63 miles E of Okinawa 4 X PB4Y hit an AK with a bomb, starting a fire.

22 miles W of Kadina 16 X Grace, 3 X Betty, 5 X Mary and 7 X Sonia attacked the Allied TF. The Allied CAP never appeared and the AA fire accounted for 2 Graces (11 damaged), 5 Marys and 7 Sonia downed. The BB Richelieu was struck by 4 torpedo hits 4 and 5 Kamikazes. Another 3 X Betty then appeared lugging Ohka bombs, but failed to hit anything. The BB Richelieu was torn to shreds from all of the shell, torpedo and Kamikaze hits and went down. Most of the crew was rescued by the surviving ships of the TF.

At Taipei the Allied attack gained a little more ground, inflicting heavy losses on the Japanese and sustaining light casualties of their own.

Frank feels that his crew fought their ship extremely well and that they were very lucky not to have been hit during the battle. The French BB is in bad need of a port as are some of the other ships of the TF. Now they've got to be on their toes as most of the ships have reduced capabilities, at best.

Ed reads the reports that have come through and he feels guilty that his Old Gals are to slow and therefore weren't there to add their muscle when it was needed. He crumples the flimsy and tosses it into the wastepaper basket in his cabin.

The San Francisco Conference Coordination Committee completed the text of the UN Charter.

Combat

The SS Dorado was attacked by 4 DDs 23 miles W of Pontianak. They gave her a pretty good pounding.

Toyohara was raided by 10 X A-26B (1 damaged), 22 X B-25J, 59 X P-47D and 13 X P-38J for light port damage and a few secondary explosions.

Nagasaki was flying 27 X Shinden and 12 X Frank when 108 X B-29 and 65 X P-38J arrived. Between the Japanese fighters and AA fire 3 B-29s (12 damaged) and 6 Lightnings (4 damaged) were lost. The Allied fighters shot down 5 Shindens (2 damaged) and 5 Franks and the bombers caused moderate damage to the heavy industry.

Sapporo was targeted by 184 X B-29 (5 damaged), 64 X B-24D (1 damaged), 24 X P-51D and 42 X P-38J. The 9 Zekes on patrol tried to fight their way through the Allied fighters and lost 8 planes. The heavy industry took moderate damage in the attack.

Alor Star had 6 X Zeke and 22 X Jack aloft when 13 X Mosquito FB.VI (5 damaged), 24 X P-47D and 36 X Thunderbolt II arrived. The Allied fighters splashed 5 Zekes and 8 Jacks while the airfield took negligible damage, and a George was trashed on the ground.

Manila was struck by 8 X TBM and the flak damaged all of them. The strike was aborted without any damage being done. Another raid 20 X B-25J (1 downed, 5 damaged), 54 X A-26B (2 downed, 15 damaged) and 30 X P-47D administered moderately light port damage and heavy casualties.

Gili Gili's airstrip was lightly damaged and the 21st Division had heavy losses in a pair of air raids.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade was bombed and strafed by Lightnings (3 damaged) for heavy casualties.

At Taipei the 117th IJNAF Base Force had heavy losses from an air attack. The Allied force attack the Japanese, squeezing the defenders into an ever shrinking pocket. The Japanese had heavy losses and the Allies took moderate casualties.

Kendari was raided by Allied planes and a PB4Y was damaged. A secondary explosion was seen and an AK was hit by a bomb and was heavily damaged and burning. Gisho Maru Another strike arrived later and a B-24J was damaged as the port was lightly damaged, the airfield was lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were claimed, casualties were very light and an AK was struck by a bomb for heavy damage and fires.

Near Taichu 3 Peggys tried to attack the Allied shipping and all were destroyed by the vigilant CAP at the cost of a Jug damaged.

The SS Steelhead attacked 3 X DD at 33,47, hitting 1 with a torpedo that did heavy damage and set it on fire.

At Naga the Japanese artillery accomplished nothing. The Allied troops attacked the Japanese positions and took some ground. Both sides had extremely heavy losses, but it was thought that the Japanese suffered more.

“A maximum effort against Nagasaki's port? I wonder why a change of targets all of a sudden?” Gel wonders out loud. The rest of the Lucky 11 share the same feelings. Gil figures that it doesn't matter where they go because it's almost always without friendly fighters around. They've been lucky because whoever has been picking the Japanese bases to hit has been pretty good about the Japs not having fighters around either.

The O'Bannon made port in the wee hours of the morning and immediately set about replenishing he fuel and ammunition. The men still are haunted by the sight of the massive French battleship being torn apart first by the gunfire and then the torpedoes and Kamikazes. It's a sobering sight that even the veterans of the ship are never able to get used to.

Jay wearily digs a new fighting hole happy to be alive, but to tired to care about what lies ahead. His buddy was wounded today. It wasn't enough to get him sent home, but Jay doubts if he'll be back on the line soon.

Combat

The SS Gunnel located and tracked 4 X DD 16 miles W of Pontianak, but never managed to launch an attack on them. Then the Gunnel failed when a small convoy of 2 AKs, 2 PCs and 5 MSWs came and went. Later the sub spotted the ships again, but she was attacked and driven off.

The SS Charr tried to attack a lone AK 92 miles SW of Inch'on, but failed to achieve a proper setup. The sub didn't give up the hunt and was later rewarded for her dogged pursuit with 4 shell and 2 fish slamming into the target, sinking the ship

The SS Carp, 24 miles SE of the Amami Group, futilely tried to attack an AK and 2 PGs. Later in the day the SS Roncador hit an AK under escort by 2 PGs with 2 torpedoes that caused the ship to sink.

Nagasaki was attacked by 78 X B-24J (4 downed, 33 damaged) and 67 X P-38J (4 downed, 1 damaged) who were challenged by 20 X Shinden. 5 Shindens were splashed and another was damaged and then the bombs rained down on the port area. There was moderate damage done to the port, some secondary explosions were observed, casualties were very light and ships in the harbor suffered the following damage.
AK Eijo Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
BB Yamato 6 bomb hits
BB Hiei 1 bomb hit
CVE Shimane Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire
BB Kirishima 4 bomb hits, on fire
CVE Taiyo 4 bomb hits, on fire
BB Musashi 1 bomb hit
CL Kuma 1 bomb hit
Another wave of Allied bombers arrived in the form of 122 X B-29 Superfortress (8 downed, 42 damaged) and they were attacked by 15 Shindens, 5 of which were damaged. The port was very heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions seen and personnel losses were thought to have been moderate. The ships in the harbor were punished again for the following damage.
BB Musashi 16 bomb hits, on fire
BB Yamato 7 bomb hits, on fire
CVE Taiyo 12 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
BB Hiei 4 bomb hits, on fire
BB Mutsu 8 bomb hits, on fire
CVE Shimane Maru 10 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
BB Kirishima 4 bomb hits, on fire
CA Mogami 1 bomb hit
CL Kuma 2 bomb hits, on fire
While 15 X Shinden patrolled above the smoke another strike rolled in on the port. This time 229 X B-29 (4 downed, 35 damaged) arrived. 2 Shindens were shot down and 4 others took damage as the bombers went about their deadly work. The port was very heavily damaged, a very large number of secondary explosions were claimed (many were fuel) and casualties were very light. Once again the ships were pounded.
CVE Taiyo 16 bomb hits, sinks
BB Mutsu 12 bomb hits, on fire
CVE Shimane Maru 17 bomb hits, sinks
BB Kirishima 21 bomb hits, on fire
BB Yamato 18 bomb hits, on fire
BB Musashi 13 bomb hits, on fire
BB Hiei 14 bomb hits, on fire
CL Sakawa 3 bomb hits, on fire
AK Daikyu Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire
AP Montoiru Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire
CA Mogami 1 bomb hit
AK Kokusei Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire
CL Kuma 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
Arriving late a sweep of 33 X P-51D jumped 6 X Shinden and 16 X Frank. A Shinden and 6 Franks were splashed at the cost of the loss of 1 Mustang.

Manila was raided by 29 X B-25J (4 downed, 15 damaged) and 9 X F4U-1 and though the bombs missed their target the Japanese had very light personnel losses.

Gili Gili was struck for light airstrip damage and the IJA 21st Division sustained heavy casualties in another strike.

At Naga the IJA 16th Division had heavy losses in an air attack in which 1 Lightning and 3 Invaders were damaged. The IJA 103rd Division had heavy casualties and the Allies had an Invader take damage in an attack on the unit. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped 4 times over the course of the day for extremely heavy losses. 3 Corsairs, 1 Lightning (1 downed), 4 Invaders and 2 Mitchells were shot up in the attacks. Japanese artillery made lots of noise, but did no harm today. The Allied forces assaulted the Japanese positions taking some ground and both sides sustained extremely heavy casualties.

At Taipei the 117th IJNAF Base Force had moderately heavy casualties from an air attack. Today's attack on the Japanese positions resulted in extremely heavy Japanese losses and negligible Allies casualties. The Japanese are now in a very small pocket. 4 X Helen and 4 X Peggy attacked the Allied ships and 13 X P-47D engaged them. All of the Japanese planes are no more, but the AK Panaman was struck by 2 Kamikazes for heavy damage and was burning. The order was then passed to abandon ship and she was then scuttled.

The Japanese AKs 88 miles NW of Taytay were pounced on by 16 X PB4Y and they suffered the following:
AK England Maru 4 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Nagoya Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire

4 Bettys tried to get the ML Terror 12 miles S of Tori Shima and their Kamikaze attacks all missed the twisting and turning vessel.

Kendari's port was lightly damaged and there were a few secondary explosions from an air raid in which AA fire damaged 3 PB4Ys.

About 19 miles S of Belitung the SS Tunny was hunted by a CL and 5 DDs, but the sub managed to dive deep enough to avoid damage.

The SS Tautog, 304 miles E of Singapore, hit an AK with the deck gun twice and 3 torpedoes which sank the ship.

Stalin's gambit of pulling back a unit was hailed from Tokyo and the Japanese have pulled some of their units back from Harbin. In Stalin's mind this doesn't make any difference to him as he views a war with Japan as inevitable.

President Truman was informed that the noose has been closed and that B-29s flying out of Formosa are now hitting Japan itself. This is good news because fighters can escort the bombers to some of their targets and full bomb loads can be carried.

The Palawan continues to unload supplies at San Marcelino and the crew feels like they'll never finish as the port facilities are almost nonexistent. Cookie is busy supplying an almost constant stream of food as the unloading process has the crew working non stop. Red is the only one aboard the Palawan that is bored as he's got nothing to do except for fooling around with Lucky.

Jay is exhausted once again and he can't dig a hole for tonight due to a wound he got in today's fighting. They guys tell him to go back to the aid station, but Jay insists on staying as it's only a flesh wound and the medic already took care of him. He doesn't want to leave his squad as they need him and he's afraid that he might get thrown into the replacement pool instead of going back to his unit.

Jay is in a state of shock. Everything was going OK and then suddenly today's attack left his platoon shattered. They had advanced a short way meeting with light opposition when the Sarge was hit by a sniper. Then things went from bad to worse as they were caught in the open by 3 bunkers spewing out death as fast as the machine guns could fire. Jay has no idea of what happened next as they all went to ground and then gradually crawled away with the encroaching darkness protecting them.

No matter what Bill has tried he can't manage to get anywhere and the Mighty Mo just sits awaiting repairs that he deems a high priority. Sam and his squad return from another useless patrol and Sam knows that if there were any Japanese on the island they would've stumbled into them and all been killed. The boredom has reduced the combat effectiveness of the unit and it'll take something to snap them out of their current malaise.

It looks a little bit like playing the old-style game of "Battleship" -- only there was no need to guess, you simply put a bomb in every square!

Holding Formosa enables the Allies to deprive the Japanese of the use of many ports. The Japanese have to anticipate this or pay the price.

Combat

Near Bataan a PBM Mariner spotted an AK and claimed a hit. Later a PB2Y also claimed a hit on what was thought to have been the same ship, sinking it. A Japanese AK hit a mine that caused heavy damage and fires. How these ships got there through all of the naval and air patrols is a mystery.

The SS Finback located 2 PCs and 5 MSWs 81 miles N of Singkawang. She hit an MSW with a torpedo, sinking it and then she was attacked.

The SS Seawolf hit an AK with 2 fish near Kadina. The vessel was heavily damaged and burning.

Manila's port was heavily damaged, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were heavy from an air strike that lost 1 Mitchell (21 damaged) and 1 Invader (9 damaged).

Gili Gili was struck by two air attacks for very light airstrip damage, a secondary explosion and the IJA 21st Division sustained moderate losses.

At Naga the IJA 43rd Division had very heavy casualties from 3 Allied air attacks in which 11 Invaders (2 destroyed), 4 Mitchells and 2 Lightnings were damaged. The Japanese had heavy losses from the Allied artillery barrages while their own attempts with artillery were fruitless.

Near Naha 66 Zekes were on patrol when 4 PB4Ys and 45 P-38Js arrived. The fighters tore into each other and 40 Zekes were splashed and 3 Lightnings (7 damaged) were lost. A Liberator was damaged by the AA fire of the PG, who escaped harm.

Nagasaki was swept by 48 X P-51D who slashed through the Zeke and 7 Shindens who were flying. All of the Japanese planes went down at the cost of a lost Mustang and another damaged.

Kendari was hit by 13 X PB4Y (1 damaged) and 13 X Kittyhawk III for a secondary explosion and negligible personnel losses. Another strike of 17 X PB4Y and 89 X P-38J hit the port lightly and an AK there ate a bomb. The ship was heavily damaged and burning.

Near Manila 4 X PB4Y attacked an AK, but failed to score any hits.

An AK 142 miles W of Bataan was attacked by 7 X TBF, 14 X TBM, 54 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4. The ship was hit by a torpedo for heavy damage and was burning.

Palawan is part of a large convoy that will make for Dadjangas. Red is standing just outside of his radio room, which is blacked out of course, staring at the stars when a new member of the crew approaches him. “You were on a ship that a Jap sub sunk, weren't you?” the young man asks. Red nods to the affirmative and thinks back to that night when he was all of 17 years old. The new guy asks some questions and Red patiently answers them when he finally tells the guy that he can't go around worrying about what could happen to them. “We're all scared, but we all learn to deal with it in our own ways. If we didn't we'd be in the looney bin,” and then Red asks the guy where he's from and they make small talk for a while. Just as he's ready to leave the guy thanks Red for the chat and heads off as his watch is coming on.

“So the scuttlebutt is that they're going to pull the division out of here for some operation and we're going to be replaced by a RCT. That'll surely make it more tempting to the Japs as they'll find out as soon as the ships arrive here,” says a clerk from regimental headquarters. As if to confirm what he said a Japanese plane is spotted flitting from cloud to cloud eyeballing the island.

Jay spent the day enjoying the lack of rain and was amazed at how quickly everything, including his hole, dried out. It's a luxury to be able to enjoy a smoke and some chow that isn't soupy despite the occasional incoming round that almost always manages to fall harmlessly in the distance.

A PB2Y spotted spotted an AK near Manila and claimed a hit. Later a pair of AKs were bombed and strafed by 7 X B-25J (2 damaged) and 40 X P-47D for the following results.
AK Dakar Maru 4 shell hits 2 bomb hits, on fire
AK Goyo Maru 8 shell hits 1 bomb hit, on fire
Another strike by 18 X B-25J and 13 X F4U-1 caught an AK with 44 shell hits and 12 bombs. The battered vessel was assumed to have sunk from such punishment.

The CL Birmingham and DDs Anthony and English intercepted an AK 92 miles W of Bataan. The Japanese ship absorbed 10 shell hits and was then no more.

Georgetown was raided by 64 X Mosquito FB.VI 24 X P-47D and 52 X Thunderbolt II who were attacked by 3 X Zero and 23 X Zeke all of whom were splashed. The AA fire was light and inaccurate and the bombers inflicted moderate damage on the airfield, a few secondary explosions were seen, 1 Zero, 1 Zeke, 6 Frances and 1 Betty were burning and casualties were very light.

Kendari was hit by 31 X B-24J (4 damaged) and 83 X P-38J. The port was heavily damaged. Another raid arrived later, but cloud cover obscured the target. In the afternoon a strike of 22 X PB4Y (2 damaged) and 76 X P-38J did light damage to the port and triggered a couple of secondary explosions.

Naga was struck by 34 X B-24J and the airstrip was moderately damaged, there were a few secondary explosions observed and personnel losses were very light. The IJA 43rd Division was pounced on for moderate casualties and 4 Invaders were damaged. Japanese artillery failed once more in it's mission to harm the Allied forces. The Japanese absorbed moderate losses from the Allied barrages.

84 miles S of Takamatsu 8 X PB4Y jumped an AO and an AK for the following results.
AK Teisho Maru 3 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AO Butsu Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage

Tokyo was flying 48 X Zeke, 5 X George, 69 X Shinden, 32 X Frank and 29 X Tony when 48 X P-51D bounced them. The furball resulted in 21 Zekes (2 damaged), 4 Georges, 18 Shindens (1 damaged), 19 Franks and 26 Tonys being destroyed. 18 Mustangs were shot down and 4 others were damaged.

Near Naha 21 X PB4Y attacked an AK and PG, but were surprised by the appearance of 21 X Zeke who jumped them. A Zeke went down in flames and 4 others were damaged while the bombers had 3 planes take hits from the fighters. The ships suffered the following.
AK Natisan Maru 11 bomb hits, sunk
PG Hakkai Maru 5 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage

Near Kadina a PG and AK were attacked by 9 X PB4Y resulting in the ships taking a pounding.
AK Sinko Maru 3 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
PG Nikkai Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage

At Clark Field Allied artillery inflicted very heavy casualties on the Japanese.

With a collective groan the aircrews of the B-29s listen to the briefing and know that they're going to Japan again tomorrow. The Lucky 11 don't realize that crews at many bases are hearing the same things as the Japanese are going to be in for a rough time of it or so the brass hopes. Later on Gil falls into his premission routine and writes a letter to Elaine before heading off for chow with the guys.

General Marshall finishes telling Harry that the Chinese are moving a massive amount of troops and Truman said, “No, the bums are going to do something? What happened to them when we needed them for Operation Noose?” The men both agree that China is a bottomless pit for aid, but for little in the way of tangible results other than they do hold down a large portion of the IJA, which has to be good enough for the Allies as that's all they're ever going to get. Marshall then started talking about the Nationalists and Communists positioning themselves for their conflict with one another after the war with the Japanese ends.

Gene's group of engineers listens to the welders and refer to the handouts that they've been given. After the meeting breaks ups Gene overhears a couple of the engineers talking and the one said, “I never even considered something like that, but when you think about it it makes perfect sense.” The other man nodded and the two of them walked away in an animated discussion. Gene is pleased that his group are now being receptive to things they poo pooed not to long ago.

Within the hour another PB4Y spotted , attacked and claimed a hit on what was suspected to have been the same ship. A PBM spotted an AK in the afternoon and claimed a hit. It was thought to have been the same ship that was hit earlier in the day. A Dauntless got into the act and claimed a hit on an AK. A PB4Y also attacked an AK and claimed hitting it. A PBM Mariner claimed they they too spotted and hit an AK. As the sun was setting a PB2Y attacked an AK, also claiming a hit. All of these sightings appear to have been of the same pair of AKs. In the middle of all of the patrol planes making their sightings and attacks 22 X B-25J, 40 X P-47D and 44 X P-38J struck the Japanese shipping in Manila Bay.
AK Goyo Maru 4 shell hits

The SS Chivo spotted and attacked 3 PGs 31 miles SE of Kagoshima, hitting 1 of them with 2 torpedoes, sinking it.

The SS Bergall attacked 3 PGs 24 miles E of Kagoshima, hitting 1 with a fish that caused a fire to break out. It was thought that this was the same trio that the Chivo attacked. Later the Bergall attacked again, hitting the PG with 3 more torpedoes, killing it.

Shimuzu was bombed by 65 X B-29 for moderate heavy industry damage.

Toyama was struck by 143 X B-29 for moderate damage to the Mitsubishi engine factory. Another attack package of 194 X B-29 then did heavy damage to the heavy industry.

Nagaoka was raided by 13 X B-29 for light damage to the Mitsubishi engine works.

Asahigawa was visited by 64 X B-24D, 18 X P-51D and 46 X P-38J who caused very light damage to the Mitsubishi engine factory.

Nagasaki was attacked by 96 X B-24J and 47 X P-51D. 8 Shindens made a feeble attempt on the American planes, losing 2 Shindens and having another damaged. The AA fire damaged 10 of the Liberators as they caused heavy heavy industry damage.

Tokyo underwent a fighter sweep from 71 X P-51D who sliced through a gaggle of 56 X Zeke, 4 X George, 74 X Shinden, 31 X Frank and 12 X Tony. 37 Zekes, 3 Georges, 33 Shindens, 20 Franks and 9 Tonys were splashed at the cost of 19 Mustangs destroyed and 5 damaged.

Maizuru was being protected by 6 X Tony when 101 X B-29 arrived. The Tonys attacked and lost 2 planes and 2 others damaged. The flak then commenced and all told a big silver bird went down and 24 were damaged. The heavy industry took moderately heavy damage.

Then 153 X Liberator VI (26 damaged) rolled in on the port which had extremely heavy damage, there was a huge number of secondary explosions and casualties were placed at very heavy.

Georgetown was hit by 64 X Mosquito FB.VI, 22 X Thunderbolt II (1 destroyed) and 16 X Spitfire VIII who blasted their way through the 5 Zekes that were there, downing them all. The airfield was lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions reported, 5 Zekes, 9 Frances, 1 Zero and a Dinah were burning at their revetments and troop losses were very light.

Kendari was the target for 25 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 80 X P-38J who caused light port damage, many secondary explosions and very light casualties. Another couple of air assaults were defeated by inclement weather.

Naga was belted by 23 X B-24J for light airstrip damage, a couple of secondary explosions and moderate personnel losses. The IJA 43rd Division had light losses and the Allies had 2 Mitchells damaged in an air strike. Japanese artillery failed miserably in it's mission while they had heavy casualties from the Allied big guns.

Manila's port was attacked by 48 X B-17E (1 damaged), 91 X B-24D (1 downed, 9 damaged) and 37 X P-38J for very heavy damage, some secondary explosions were seen and casualties were heavy. The port was then struck by 53 X B-25J (23 damaged) and 15 X F4U-1 for light damage, a secondary explosion and heavy losses. Another strike package hit for a solitary secondary explosion and very light casualties that cost a Mitchell destroyed (10 damaged and 19 Invaders damaged.

Gili Gili had light airstrip damage and very light losses from an air raid and the IJA 21st Division absorbed moderate casualties from another attack.

Near Ominato 7 X PB4Y tried to attack a Japanese ship. 1 X Rufe, 12 X Zero, 34 X Frank and 33 X Tony downed 3 bombers and damaged another at the cost of 1 Zero, 5 Franks (1 downed) and 3 Tonys being damaged. No vessel was harmed.

19 miles SE of the Amami Group the SS Roncador attacked an unescorted AK and hit it with 3 torpedoes that spelled doom for the ship.

At Clark Field the Japanese sustained heavy losses from the Allied artillery.

With another mission under their belts the Lucky 11 listen to the reports that so many targets were successfully attacked in Japan today and that hostile fighters were virtually nonexistent. Hoppy muttered something to the effect that a single virtually nonexistent Japanese fighter could kill them.

The Palawan continues to plod towards Dadjangas. “You know that new guy?” asks Red and Cookie nods. “Well he's spooky. He's constantly bothering me with questions about my ship getting sunk and my rescue. Anyway it turns out he was on a ship going to Russia that got sunk. All the guy wants to know is what it's like in warmer waters with the sharks. Hell, I told him I'd rather risk that than freezing to death and I asked him how he survived. It turned out that an escort picked him up in less than an hour after his ship went down. The escort had been bombed and was limping along after the convoy. Anyways he was on a raft that kept him out of the water and he got lucky. That's why he hooked up with the Palawan as he refused to sail those Russia convoys or even in the Atlantic.” The two of them ponder the war and what's it's doing to them as the ship continues on it's way.

A PB4Y spotted an AK in Manila Bay and claimed a hit. Another PB4Y also spotted an AK in the bay and claimed a hit. Allied planes arrived in the late afternoon to attack an AK in the bay scoring 12 shell hits on it that did heavy damage and caused a fire. Another attack on another AK scored 2 bomb hits that did heavy damage and fires were triggered.

The SS Bergall was driven deep by a PG 21 miles E of Kagoshima.

The SS Roncador attacked a solitary AK 93 miles S of Kagoshima, hitting it with 3 torpedoes and sinking it.

The SS Jack tracked and attacked an AP and 2 MSWs 88 miles SW of Insh'on. She hit her prey with 2 torpedoes that did heavy damage to the AP and triggered fires. Later the Jack attacked a lone AK and hit it with the deck gun 4 times and 3 fish, sinking it. In the early evening the Jack attacked and AK and 2 MSWs, hitting the AK with 2 fish that set it on fire.

The SS Apogon was hunted by 2 PCs 29 miles S of Hamamatsu, but she managed to evade them.

Nagasaki was swept by 71 X P-38J who tore into 9 X Shinden and 6 X Tony. All but 2 Shindens were shot down at the cost of 4 Lightnings being destroyed and 3 others taking damage.

Hakodate was struck by 60 X B-24D and 19 X P-51D who fought their way through 20 X Tony. The Japanese fighters made a weak attempt at repelling the Allied planes before fleeing. 6 Tonys were splashed and 3 were damaged. The AA fire damaged 4 of the bombers who caused moderately light damage to the heavy industry.

Kagoshima was attacked by 87 X B-24J and 71 X P-38J and they were opposed by 33 X Shinden and 22 X Zeke. 16 Shindens and 17 Zekes were downed and the Allies paid with 3 Liberators (17 damaged) and 8 Lightnings (3 damaged) lost. The port sustained moderate damage, there was a secondary explosion seen and a CVE thought to have been the Chuyo took 28 bomb hits leaving it heavily damaged and burning.

Tavoy had it's airstrip lightly damaged and there was a pair of secondary explosions in return for which 4 X Beaufighter Mk 21 were damaged.

Bangkok's port took heavy damage, there were a large number of secondary explosions and casualties were heavy while the Allies had 22 Liberator VI take damage.

Kendari's AA defenses damaged a marauding B-24J while the Allied planes caused a few secondary explosions in their attack. A PB4Y was damaged and the base had a secondary explosion from a raid in the afternoon. Then low lying clouds prevented another strike package from finding their target.

Naga's port took heavy damage, there were some secondary explosions and personnel losses were moderate from an air attack. The the airfield was hit for heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were moderate from another wave of planes. The IJA 43rd Division was hit twice for heavy losses and 3 Invaders (1 downed) and 4 Mitchells were damaged in the air strikes. Today’s artillery duels produced no harm to the Allies and heavy casualties for the Japanese.

Manila's port took light damage, there were some secondary explosions and troop losses were heavy from an air raid. 4 Mitchells, 7 Invaders (1 downed) and 1 PB4Ywere damaged as the Allied planes struck for light damage to the port and very light troop losses in the late afternoon.

Gili Gili had it's airstrip lightly damaged and the IJA 21st Division took moderately heavy casualties in a pair of air strikes.

Georgetown was swept by 14 X Spitfire VIII who engaged 4 X Zero and 3 X Zeke. A Zero and 2 Zekes were destroyed in the fight.

The Allied ships unloading at Tori Shima were attacked by 2 Bettys who were destroyed by the vigilant CAP of 22 Mustangs.

About 27 miles S of Shimuzu the SS Corvina attacked an AO and 2 PCs. The AO ate 3 fish that caused it to disappear in a huge fireball.

At Clark Field Allied artillery barrages resulted in very heavy Japanese losses.

Stalin ordered a force reduction near Harbin and advised Tokyo of it. He also expressed his hopes that Tokyo will do the same in order to diffuse a potential area of conflict. Privately he confides to Molotov that he hopes the Japanese act defiantly presenting him with an excuse to make accusations, demands and even an opening of hostilities.

The Flying Deuces will be on LRCAP for a convoy bound to Batan Island, where it is supposed to be joined by some other AKs. Stick is looking forward to the mission in the hope of the Japanese trying something and presenting him with targets.

Sam spent his day wandering down to the poor excuse of a port and then over to the airstrip. The planes were coming and going as a constant umbrella is provided for the base by the Mustangs. He enjoys watching the lumbering PBMs as the struggle into the air and on their way on their distant patrols. Frankie, as usual, is busily running around, but he never strays out of visual contact with Sam. Sam starts thinking about how he's going to manage taking Frankie home with him.

Combat

A Coronado spotted an AK in Manila Bay and claimed a hit. A PB4Y spotted located what was thought to have been the same AK a couple of hours later and the report contained the claim of a bomb hit on the vessel. Another PB2Y then reported in with a sighting and claim of a hit on an already damaged AK. In the late afternoon 5 X B-25J attacked an AK in Manila Bay hitting it with 4 shells and 2 bombs that sank the ship. Another strike nearby caught another AK with 4 bombs and 2 fish, sinking her.

Nagasaki was raided by 63 X B-24J and 43 X P-51D. 30 Shindens were able to make an interception and the furball was on. 5 Shindens were splashed, 6 damaged while they accounted for 8 Mustangs lost and another damaged. The bombers lost 4 planes and another 14 were damaged by the Shindens and AA fire. It was not enough to prevent the bombs from showering the port area for moderate damage, a couple of secondary explosions and very light casualties. Some ships in the port were also hit.
DD Kaki 4 bomb hits, sunk
AK Horaizan Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AP Nissen Maru #3 4 bomb hits, sunk
AK Eisho Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP Ayatosan Maru 1 bomb hit, heavy damage

AK Daikyu Maru 1 bomb hit, heavy damage
TK Munakata Maru 1 bomb hit, heavy damage
AK Waka Maru 1 bomb hit, sunk
AK Nisshi Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage

Tavoy was raided by Allied planes and a Beaufighter Mk 21 was destroyed and 6 others took damage as they caused moderate damage to the airstrip and some secondary explosions were reported.

Naga's port took moderate damage from an air raid that also caused a couple of secondary explosions and light personnel losses. Another attack did moderate damage to the airfield, triggered a few secondary explosions and there were negligible casualties. The IJA 43rd Division was jumped by Allied planes and had heavy losses. An Invader went down and 4 were damaged and a Mitchell was also damaged in the attack. The daily artillery duels did no harm to the Allies and the Japanese suffered heavily.

Gili Gili airstrip absorbed negligible damage, the South Seas Det. Had very heavy losses and the IJA 21st Division had moderate casualties inflicted on it. In these 3 attacks no Allied planes were touched.

Near Shanghai 27 X B-25J (5 damaged) and 68 X P-38J (2 downed, 2 damaged) appeared and 15 X Zeke and 24 X George tried to stop them. 12 Zekes and 13 Georges were shot down and the planes went to work on the ships.
PG Kogyoku Maru 20 shell hits, 3 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
PC Kasado 16 shell hits, 1 bomb hit, on fire
PC PC-2 12 shell hits, 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
Later 6 X Zeke and 11 X George tried to deal with 22 X B-25J and 89 X P-38J (1 downed) only to lose 2 Zekes and 8 Georges. The planes clobbered the Japanese ships.
PC Kasado 28 shell hits, 6 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
PC PC-2, Shell hits 8 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
PG Kogyoku Maru 4 shell hits, 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage

Toyohara was subjected to an air raid in which 3 Mitchells and 2 Invaders were damaged as they caused light damage to the airfield, triggered some secondary explosions and inflicted very light casualties.

Kendari had light damage from an air attack. In another raid 2 PB4Ys were damaged and the Japanese had very light losses as the bombers missed their target.

Manila was struck by Allied air power, but no damage was done and 2 PB4Ys were damaged.

The Allied ships unloading at Tori Shima were under the protection of 30 X P-51D who intercepted a pair of Bettys and splashed them.

At Clark Field the Japanese sustained heavy losses from the Allied artillery.

The SS Finback lost her fight of survival today as she was scuttled and her crew took to rafts awaiting pick up.

President Truman sits with his advisers and listens and then says, “We've already decided not to attempt an amphibious landing at Manila, but rather to squeeze the Japanese into there and starve them out.” When the dissent begins he immediately tells them to stop as the decision is final. Harry is finding it difficult to deal with these people who never seem to be able to come down on one side of the fence or the other. He remarked to Admiral King after everybody else had left that, “During planning they all jump on the bandwagon and then later on when it's time to act they get cold feet.”

Sam watched 2 Japanese planes go down in the distance and wonders what drives these men to try doing the impossible only to get killed. The fact that he was actually able to see planes smoking and dropping from the sky made him uneasy as this indicated that the Japanese penetrated the island's defenses more than usual.

Jim wipes the seat from his brow and surveys the progress the Sea Bees have made in expanding the port and airfield. He knows that soon they'll either move on or start with the defenses. He doubts that the Japanese could ever mount an attack on Formosa with so much naval and air strength based here.

The US 2nd Armored Division entered Berlin.

Of course the uncertainty of it all doesn't really bother him or any of the other guys because sitting in their holes fighting the rains is bad enough without having to shoot it out with the Japs.

The guys are talking about the scuttlebutt floating around that B-29 groups are going to be reassigned to bases in Formosa as it's much closer to Japan so the planes can carry full bomb loads. “It doesn't matter where we're based,” said Donny, “because it's certain that shorter trips mean more of them. Nope I'll stay here and fly fewer missions and pray to survive them.” Gil silently agrees and heads off to the mess hall.

The SS Gar made a surface attack on a lone AK 71 miles SW of Toboali just before dawn. Her deck gun scored 5 hits and 3 torpedoes struck the ship, sinking it.

Shimuzu was attacked by 85 X B-29 and AA fire downed 2 and damaged 5 of the bombers. The heavy industry was moderately damaged. Then 117 X B-29 arrived and 4 of the big birds were damaged by the flak. The Mitsubishi engine factory was moderately damaged. A third wave of 89 X B-29 (2 damaged) appeared and they added moderate damage to the heavy industry.

Kitakyushu was bombed by 54 X B-29 for moderate damage to the heavy industry.

Victoria Point was raided by 20 X Liberator VI (1 downed, 5 damaged) and they did light damage to the airstrip, a few secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were placed at moderate.

Tavoy had it's airfield lightly damaged and there were a few secondary explosions observed. A Mosquito FB.VI was damaged by ground fire in the strike.

Bangkok was struck by 144 X Liberator VI (2 downed, 21 damaged) as they dealt out very heavy damage to the airfield, there were many secondary explosions and personnel losses were thought to have been very heavy.

Naga had it's airfield attacked by Allied planes for light damage, a few secondary explosions were seen and casualties were moderate. In another raid a B-24J was damaged and the airstrip absorbed additional light damage, a secondary explosion was triggered and troop losses were very light. Another wave of Allied aircraft delivered additional moderate damage to the airfield and moderately heavy casualties. Japanese artillery accomplished nothing while the Allied big guns delivered heavy losses to the Japanese.

Gili Gili had light damage to it's airstrip and a secondary explosion from Allied planes. In another strike the IJA 21st Division took moderately heavy losses.

Toyohara was hit by aircraft for light damage to the airfield and port, some secondary explosions were seen and casualties were light.

Georgetown was swept by 14 X Spitfire VIII and they attacked 3 X Zero and 11 X Zeke. The Zero and 3 Zekes were destroyed in the fight.

Kendari's AA fire damaged a PB4Y as the port was lightly damaged and a secondary explosion erupted. The port was hit again for light damage and a few secondary explosions.

The Japanese ships 307 miles E of Camranh Bay were attacked by 14 X TBM (1 damaged) and 18 X FM-2.
AK Tokusima Maru 1 torpedo hit, on fire, heavy damage
AK Gyosan Maru 1 torpedo hit, sunk
Another wave of 7 X TBM and 8 X FM-2 then arrived and they couldn't hit an already damaged AK. Then 7 X TBM and 3 X FM-2 arrived and hit a PC with a torpedo, setting it on fire and causing heavy damage.

At Clark Field Allied artillery caused heavy Japanese casualties.

At the Pentagon there is a raging debate about transferring units from Europe to the Pacific and all that it entails. For now it looks like little will be shifted.

Sandy and Dave were in town today and the first place Sandy stopped by was the Post Office. There were no letters for her and she spent the rest of the day dejected, knowing that with the holiday tomorrow there would be no mail service.

Elaine has reluctantly agreed to go to a Pirate's game with her father when they return from the lengthy road trip that the team is now on. She made a point of getting a letter off to Gil today, knowing that otherwise it wouldn't get out for a couple of days.

Slim and the other NCOs have been pushing for time to properly fill out the division, but as usual they are informed that everything will be forthcoming in dribs and drabs as there are many other units that combat has chewed up and they have needs also. Slim just shrugs and figures somebody on high in the Corps better know what they're doing or soon the units will become brittle. If nothing else they need rest and semi civilized conditions to live in for a while.

Today is the nation's birthday and President Truman released the following statement.
“Again this year we celebrate July 4 as the anniversary of the day one hundred and sixty-nine years ago on which we declared our independence as a sovereign people. In this year of 1945, we have pride in the combined might of this nation which has contributed signally to the defeat of the enemy in Europe. We have confidence that, under Providence, we soon may crush the enemy in the Pacific. We have humility for the guidance that has been given us of God in serving His will as a leader of freedom for the world. This year, the men and women of our armed forces, and many civilians as well, are celebrating the anniversary of American Independence in other countries throughout the world. Citizens of these other lands will understand what we celebrate and why, for freedom is dear to the hearts of all men everywhere. In other lands, others will join us in honoring our declaration that all men are created equal and are endowed with certain inalienable rights--life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Here at home, on this July 4, 1945, let us honor our Nation's creed of liberty, and the men and women of our armed forces who are carrying this creed with them throughout the world.”

The British 7th Armored Division entered Berlin.

Combat

The SS Haddo hit an AK with 3 torpedoes 28 miles S of Saigon, sinking it. The 5 MSWs escorting the ship never even got a sniff of the sub.

The SS Cachalot, having laid her mines at Ominato, found a juicy AK all by itself and she made a surface attack. Her deck gun scored 3 hits and 3 fish hit the target. The AK succumbed to the damage quickly and was no more. Later some MSWs found the sub, but once again she eluded them before any harm could befall her.

Pescadores was attacked by Allied planes and the AA fire damaged 7 B-24Js. The port was moderately damaged and there were a few secondary explosions.

Victoria Point AA defenses damaged 3 Liberator VIs as the airstrip was lightly damaged and there were negligible casualties.

Tavoy was raided by Allied aircraft and had light airfield damage and light personnel losses. 2 Beaufighter Mk 21s were destroyed and 3 were damaged.

Georgetown had a CAP of 2 X Zero and 12 X Zeke aloft when 8 X Mosquito FB.VI and 11 X Thunderbolt II arrived a Zero and a Zeke went down and the airfield took negligible damage.

Naga was bombed 3 times. The airfield having moderately heavy damage, the port moderate damage, there were a some secondary explosions and 2 Liberators were damaged (1 downed). The IJA 43rd Division was struck 3 times by Allied planes for very heavy casualties. 26 Invaders (1 lost) and 1 Mitchell were damaged in the attacks. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade had heavy losses from an air attack in which A Mitchell and 2 Invaders (5 damaged) were shot down. The Allies had no harm done to them by the Japanese artillery and they inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese with their big guns.

Manila was hit for moderate airfield damage, a couple of secondary explosions and heavy casualties. 8 B-24Js were damaged.

Rabaul was raided by 15 X Liberator VI for light airstrip damage and very light troop losses.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division sustained heavy casualties from an air raid.

Toyohara was struck for light damage to the airfield and port and a secondary explosion was seen. 2 Mitchells and an Invader were damaged.

Kendari had light port damage and very light personnel losses from Allied aircraft.

At Clark Field Allied artillery caused heavy Japanese casualties.

Jay wonders if they're ever going to get our of this place. The popular thought in the squad is that the brass has forgotten them and they'll finish the war here as artillery shells fly overhead. In the meantime the rains continue off and on and everything is getting soaked except for the ammo that somehow the men are keeping dry. “After all we'll work just fine if we're waterlogged,” said one of the squad as he ate his soupy can of something or other.

Sam is nursing a hangover from yesterday's celebration of the 4th. The scuttlebutt is still circulating that they're going to get pulled out of here to be sent into some other place. “We're actually at full strength and those guys fighting on Formosa and the PIs have to be in need of a break,” said somebody while they were strolling through their patrol area. Sam has decided that they need to start acting like soldiers again so when they return to their area he plans on speaking to the LT and the other NCOs about some planned exercises each day, marches and whatever else they need to knock the cobwebs off.

Combat

The Old Gals shattered the tranquility of the morning with a naval bombardment of the Pescadores and the BB Arizona was struck by a shell in return. The airfield was moderately damaged, the port took heavy damage, there were a few secondary explosions observed and casualties were placed at very heavy.

The SS Escolar attacked a lone AK 79 miles SE of Banjarmasin, hitting it with a torpedo that started a fire and did heavy damage. Later in the day the sub encountered another AK all by itself and she scored a hit with a fish for heavy damage and fires.

Nagasaki was being protected by 29 X Shinden when 111 X P-51D arrived on a fighter sweep just ahead of 165 X B-29 and their escorts, 88 X P-38J. All of the Shindens were splashed as 2 Mustangs were damaged, though the Shindens did destroy 16 Lightnings and damaged another. The AA fire damaged 7 of the big silver birds who inflicted extremely heavy damage on the heavy industry.

Tavoy had light damage to it's airstrip and a secondary explosion from an air raid that lost a Mosquito FB.VI (2 damaged) and a Beaufighter Mk 21 was also damaged.

Rabaul was raided by 14 X Liberator VI who caused very light damage to the airfield.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division suffered heavy losses from an air attack.

At Naga the IJA 43rd Division was struck for heavy casualties and the Allies lost an Invader and 11 more were damaged. The Japanese artillery inflicted very light losses on the Allied troops and the Allied barrages inflicted very heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Toyohara was attacked Allied planes for light airfield damage, a couple of secondary explosions and light personnel losses and a Mitchell and an Invader were damaged.

Near Shanghai 24 X B-29 (1 damaged), 6 X PB4Y (1 damaged) and 59 X P-38J attacked the 4 DDs hitting 1 with 4 bombs that caused the tin can to sink. The 5 Zekes that were up lost 3 planes and then ran. This was the third time that I can think of that B-29s attacked shipping without orders to do so. I issue specific orders to the B-29s and unless they are ordered to do something they are stood down.

Near Hakodate 9 X Tony were protecting the port area when 4 marauding PB4Ys arrived. The Japanese fighters never attempted an intercept and the AK anchored there was struck by a bomb and was burning.

At Clark Field the Japanese had heavy casualties from the Allied artillery.

Ed took a quick trip and he was ashore to check in at HQs. His TF has done well as far as all of the reports show and they'll be heading back again to dump more ordinance on the Japanese before the assault commences. All of the pieces are in place an they're just awaiting the go order. It is supposed to be a para drop for the of the troops along with some Marine Raider Bns arriving by fast transport, but a Brigade of infantry is on standby if the assault troops need added muscle. Besides there's plenty of troops on Formosa with nothing to do except refit and rest before their next outing.

Stick checks the board and sees that he's scheduled to fly a LRCAP mission over some freighters tomorrow. He's excited because the Japanese just may try something. He knows that he can't get much closer to Japan than he is right now, but so far the Japanese have made no serious attempt to challenge that Allied air power.

The O'Bannon rides at anchor at Takao. Art is anxious for orders as sitting doing nothing is boring and duty aboard a DD during a war should never be that. He figures that fuel supplies need to be built up some more before the USN can use it's newest big base to it's fullest potential. His last trip ashore amazed him that the Sea Bees had finished work on the port and all of it's facilities and they immediately shifted gears and attacked expansion of the airbase. That night in the ward room he mentioned that Japan's empire has been sliced in two and no further shipping will come from the East. One of the officers added that was, “Unless they want to commit suicide.”

Yesterday SHAEF said that of the 5.8 million displaced persons in the Anglo-American zone, 3.26 million have already been repatriated and 2.53 million, mostly E Europeans are still in the repatriation camps.

Norway declared war on Japan. More than 800 Norwegians are in Japanese POW camps.

At Ominato an AK hit a mine and exploded in a brilliant flash and was gone.

Tokyo was swept by 133 X P-51D and the Japanese gave battle with 32 X Zeke, 79 X Shinden, 12 X Tony and 31 X Frank. The furball resulted in 27 Zekes, 55 Shindens, 12 Tonys and 24 Franks being lost and the toll for the Americans was 34 Mustangs shot down and 6 damaged.

Pescadores was bombed by 74 X B-24J (1 downed, 2 damaged) and 41 X P-47D for moderate damage to the port, some secondary explosions were observed and casualties were negligible.

Tavoy was tagged for light airfield damage and a secondary explosion. 2 Beaufighter Mk 21s were damaged.

Naga was struck by 42 X B-24D and 39 X B-24J (2 damaged) for heavy airfield damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and personnel losses were moderate. The IJA 43rd Division had moderate casualties from 2 air strikes in which 12 Invaders and a Mitchell were damaged. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade had negligible losses from an air attack and 2 Invaders departed trailing smoke. The Japanese artillery tried and failed once again to do any harm to the Allied forces while the Allied gunners hit the Japanese for heavy casualties.

Rabaul was raided by 12 Liberator VIs for extremely light damage to the airstrip.

At Clark Field the IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade sustained moderate casualties and the Allies lost a Mitchell and had 11 more damaged in an air raid. Allied artillery inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese.

Near Shanghai 2 Zeros were on patrol when 11 X B-25J and 45 X P-38J arrived to attack the destroyers there. A Zeke went down in flames and the other ran and 10 Mitchells were damaged by the AA fire as they hit a DD with 16 shells and a bomb, leaving the ship heavily damaged and burning. Another strike of 10 X PB4Y and 46 X P-38J arrived shortly thereafter. The Lightnings shot down the Zero that was in the area and 4 bombers were damaged by the flak thrown up by 3 DDs. The already damaged tin can absorbed another bomb strike that added to her woes. Then 5 X PB4Y and 49 X P-38J rolled in, but didn't manage to hit anything.

Tomorrow's weather is supposed to be clear enough over Japan that the Lucky Eleven will fly. Mitsubishi engine factories and heavy industry are the targets once again and fighter opposition is expected to be heavy. It would be nice if the little friends were around when needed, but nobody is holding any false hopes. It feels like their being thrown to the wolves. The B-29 was designed to fly a great distance, carry a heavy bomb load and be able to defend itself, but as far as Gil is concerned 2 out of 3 just isn't good enough.

The guys are sick and tired of spending their lives soaked in their holes. Movement is a risky business not so much because of the Japanese shellings, but rather the small arms fire it draws in many places. Jay luckily resides in a location that seems to be in the Japanese's blind spot. Despite this comforting fact he doesn't feel like tempting fate so he remains cramped in the hole like everybody else.

The meeting inside the Pentagon has resolved what the next move will be after securing the PIs and refitting the formations engaged there. What is sure to anger the British is that the US is going to throw some support units, supplies, fuel and naval assets into the fray to help out the Anzacs in their upcoming operation while the Marines and Army take their well deserved breather.

Combat

The 3 IJN MSWs continued sweeping ops on the mine field at Ominato.

The SS Hackleback carefully approached an AK being escorted by 3 MSWs and a PC 33 miles SE of Camranh Bay. After penetrating the screen she hit her prey with 3 torpedoes that sank the ship.

The SS Entemedor, 276 miles SE of Camranh Bay, attacked a lone AK, hitting it once with her deck gun and with 3 fish that sent it to the bottom.

The SS Escolar found an AK all by itself 81 miles E of Pamakasan and the sub made her attack hitting the target with 2 torpedoes, sinking the vessel.

Matsuyama was attacked by 141 X B-29 who caught the defenders by surprise. No planes were damaged as there were no fighters present and the AA fire was extremely light and inaccurate. The Mitsubishi engine plant was moderately damaged.

Nagaoka was struck by 176 X B-29 and once again the Japanese did nothing to oppose the bombers who caused moderately heavy damage to the Mitsubishi engine factory.

Nagoya was raided by 141 X B-29, but the Japanese had a CAP of 22 X Frank and 34 X Tony aloft. The fighters attacked the bombers and the flak was heavy and accurate. 3 Franks (9 damaged) and 5 Tonys (19 damaged) were shot down by the withering fire from the big silver birds. 6 Superforts were destroyed and 30 took damage from all causes as the Mitsubishi engine works was hit. The CAP was barely reformed when 181 X B-29 roared in. 10 Franks and 14 Tonys tried to stem the tide, losing 2 Franks (6 damaged) and a Tony (10 damaged). Once more the ground fire was intense and 5 B-29s were splashed and 32 more were damaged. The Mitsubishi engine factory was targeted in this attack too and all told it was heavily damaged.

Pescadores had it's port moderately damaged and there were some secondary explosions from 82 X B-24J (1 downed, 2 damaged) and 41 X P-47D. Another raid lost a Mitchell and 10 were damaged as they did light damage to the port and destroyed a Betty.

Ichang was raided by 75 X B-25J and 48 X P-40N. A lone George was up and before it ran a Warhawk went down in flames. Flak knocked down 2 Mitchells and damaged 9 while the airfield took moderate damage, there were many secondary explosions claimed and casualties were thought to have been moderate.

Victoria Point was struck by 23 X Liberator VI and flak damaged 5 of them. The airstrip was lightly damaged, a secondary explosion was seen and personnel losses were negligible.

Tavoy had it's airfield lightly damaged by an air raid that also caused a couple of secondary explosions and extremely light casualties. A Mosquito FB.VI and7 Beaufighter Mk 21s were damaged.

Bangkok was bashed by 152 X Liberator VI (22 damaged) for extremely heavy airfield damage, an extremely large number of secondary explosions were reported, 6 Topsys were trashed and troop losses were very heavy.

Alor Star was swept by 59 X Thunderbolt II who pounced on 22 X Zeke, 21 X George and 20 X Jack. A Jug was lost as they dealt out death to 19 Zekes, 16 Georges and 12 Jacks.

Georgetown had a Zero and 16 Zekes protecting it when 64 X Mosquito FB.VI, 21 X P-47D and 13 X Spitfire VIII attacked. The Zero and 5 Zekes were shot down in their vain attempt to reach the bombers and a Thunderbolt was lost. The airstrip was moderately damaged, and there were some secondary explosions observed.

Balikpapan was attacked by 30 X B-24J who ran afoul of 18 X Zeke and 9 X Tony. 9 Zekes (2 downed) and 2 Tonys were damaged as they and the flak downed 3 bombers and damaged 14 others. The port was lightly damaged, a fuel explosions was reported and an AK at anchor absorbed a bomb hit.

Naga's defenses damaged 2 Liberators as the bombers did moderately heavy damage to the airfield, triggered a couple of secondary explosions and inflicted light casualties on the Japanese. The IJA 43rd Division had heavy losses from 2 air raids made on it and 20 Invaders and 3 Mitchells suffered damage in the attacks. The daily artillery barrages produced moderate Japanese losses and none for the Allies.

Manila was hit for heavy personnel losses and 14 Helldivers took damage from the ground fire. Then the airfield was heavily damaged, a couple of secondary explosions erupted and there were heavy casualties from an attack made by 62 X B-24J (14 damaged). Another wave of planes struck a short time later for moderate damage to the airstrip, a secondary explosion, moderate troop losses and the Allies had 7 Liberators damaged.

Clark Field was jumped by Allied planes and the flak damaged 6 B-17Es and 8 B-24Ds as the airfield was subjected to extremely heavy damage, there was a large number of secondary explosions seen and casualties were very heavy. The IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade got attacked twice by aircraft for heavy casualties and 19 Mitchells and 6 Invaders were damaged. The Allied artillery bombardment inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese.

Stick has now flown 109 missions and still has a goose egg to show for it. He can't figure out why the Japanese never seem to put up a fight wherever the Flying Deuces are stationed. They are constantly being pushed forward to the most advanced bases and yet the Japanese never come.

The officers attended a meeting and none of them are willing to talk about it with their NCOs. Sam is convinced that something is afoot and by hook or by crook he's determined to find out what it is. Whatever it is he hopes that it gets him off of this forsaken rock.

Gil drops out of Jake's Jalopy and joins the guys inspecting the plane for damage. They were convinced that the flak had them, but from the looks of things their plane was untouched. This surprises them since they took a rough jostling from all of the ground fire. After the debriefing and the shot of whiskey the guys head off for some show and then shut eye.

Mixed Brigade was hit for moderately heavy casualties and 4 Mitchells and 8 Invaders were damaged. The Japanese had very heavy losses from the Allied artillery barrages.

“The troops are moving into position and then the plan calls for driving the Japanese into the Manila area, where they will be destroyed.” Truman looks around the room and just nods to the officers that are present. They all leave except for Admiral King and General Marshall. The 3 men huddle for a short time and then they leave the President alone with his thoughts.

The Australians have prevailed and the USN has relented and promised to lend some CVs to provide air cover, AOs to keep the warships at sea and APs and AKs to make the invasion itself possible. The plan calls for the British successfully taking Palembang and then the Anzacs will move. There is pressure not to wait for the British though.

Combat

The SS Hackleback attacked a PG and 6 PCs 159 miles S of Camranh Bay, hitting a PC with a torpedo that caused it to sink.

The SS Pickerel attacked an AK being escorted by 5 PCs 26 miles NE of Matsue, hitting the freighter with a fish that triggered a fire. The escorts hunted, found and attacked the sub who unsuccessfully tried to evade them. The relentless attack killed the Pickerel.

The SS Gudgeon, 80 miles SE of Belitung, located and attacked a lone AK, hitting it with a torpedo that did heavy damage to the vessel and caused a fire to break out. Later the sub attacked the same AK, scoring with 3 torpedoes that doomed it.

Nagaoka was bombed by 178 X B-29 who caught the Japanese sleeping. The Mitsubishi engine plant took heavy damage and all of the planes departed unscathed.

Pescadores had it's port lightly damaged and some secondary explosions were observed in an air attack that saw a Liberator take damage. Another air raid saw 2 Mitchells take damage as the Allied planes caused a secondary explosion.

Tavoy was raided by Allied planes who accounted for very light damage to the airstrip at the cost of a Mosquito FB.VI and 3 Beaufighter Mk 21s getting damaged.

Georgetown had 16 Zekes flying when 64 X Mosquito FB.VI, 13 X P-47D, 48 X Thunderbolt II and 11 X Spitfire VIII arrived. 5 Zekes were shot down and 2 were damaged as they vainly tried to reach the bombers. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were a few secondary explosions claimed and casualties were thought to have been very light. All of the Allied aircraft departed safely.

Naga was attacked by 39 X B-24D (1 damaged) and 34 X B-24J who moderately damaged the airfield, triggered some secondary explosions and there were moderate personnel losses. The IJA 43rd Division had heavy casualties from 2 air attacks made on it. A pair of Invaders went down and 32 took damage and 4 Mitchells also were damaged in the attacks. The usual artillery exchanges brought the usual results of heavy Japanese losses and no casualties for the Allied forces.

Manila was hit by 31 X B-24J (4 damaged) for light airstrip damage, a few secondary explosions and moderate casualties.

Clark Field was hammered by 38 X B-17E (6 damaged), 81 X B-24D (1 downed, 6 damaged) and 37 X P-38J for moderately heavy airfield damage, a secondary explosion was seen and troop losses were heavy. The IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade had very heavy casualties from Allied planes and 15 Mitchells took damage in the attack. Allied artillery inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese defenders.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division had heavy casualties from an air raid in which all of the Allied planes left intact.

Kuala was jumped by 17 X Avenger II and 14 X Hellcat II who did extremely light damage to the airstrip.

The CL Helena glides through the water as her TF covers a convoy bound for Formosa. Jeff is excited by the prospect of combat as the ships move towards their destination. He hopes that he can do his job up to the high levels expected of him. His thoughts turn to the balky radar and he reminds himself to check in on how things are going with the set after his watch ends.

Harry asks why the troops are not already attacking at Clark Field and when he's told that the reinforcements haven't arrived there yet he fumes and demands to know why they're moving a slow as molasses. The President is beginning to have a growing dislike for a certain pompous Army general in the PIs.

Jay watches the front, trying to keep his eyes open, fighting off the sleep that he never can get enough of. He has promised himself that after the war he's going to have a wonderful meal, desert and when he can't eat anything else he's going to bed and if anyone awakens him they'll be in deep stuff. He yawns and pinches himself, looking at his watch he rubs the face to clear the moisture and sees that he has another hour to go before he can try to grab some sleep.

The SS Sabalo attacked an AK 93 miles S of Banjarmasin traveling all by itself. The target ate 2 fish , sinking it.

Pescadores was hit by Allied planes for moderate airfield damage, a secondary explosion, very light casualties and 2 B-24Js were damaged in the attack.

Georgetown was struck by Allied aircraft and 9 Zekes tried to stem the tide. A Thunderbolt II was damaged and 6 Zekes went down as the bombers inflicted moderate damage on the airstrip, a secondary explosion was reported and personnel losses were extremely light.

Naga was bombed by 40 X B-24D (1 damaged) and 40 X B-24J (3 damaged) for light port damage, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and casualties were extremely light. Artillery exchanges did no harm to the Allies and the Japanese had heavy losses.

Manila was hit by 30 X B-24J (14 damaged) for moderate airfield damage, a secondary explosion and moderate troop losses.

Rabaul underwent a raid by Liberator VIs that couldn't find their target due to heavy, low lying cloud cover.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division suffered moderate casualties from an air strike.

Allied artillery barrages at Clark Field caused very heavy Japanese personnel losses.

Sam's squad has done nothing but grumble about having to play soldier. This made Sam grin as he knows his guys will knuckle down and be ready for whatever is thrown their way.

Tomorrow the Pirates open a home stand and Elaine will be going to Forbes Field with her father, as promised. She's in a grumpy mood as there hasn't been a letter from Gil so far this week. Her father gave her sister $5 and told her to take Elaine out for an ice cream and see a movie to try and cheer her up.

Gil got another letter from home. This time his sister wrote of nothing concerning his father and that made Gil a very surprised person. She told him of servicemen starting to trickle back from Europe and this only depresses him. “How can they go home when there's still a war on?” he asks the guys and they agree with him. The guys are of the opinion that if the Army would bring all of those divisions to Japan the war would be over very quickly.

Combat

The SS Jallao attacked an hit a TK with 2 torpedoes at 37 miles E of Camranh Bay, breaking the ship in two. Both sections slipped under quickly.

A naval bombardment of Pescadores was conducted by some of the Old Gals. The airstrip was moderately damaged, the port was heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions reported and casualties were very heavy.

The SS Ronquil, 21 miles NW of Sasebo, attacked a lone TK and hit it with a pair of fish that set the ship on fire.

Nagoya was swept by 121 X P-51D who swooped in on 20 X Frank and 20 X Tony. All of the Japanese fighters were shot down and 2 Mustangs met their demise. A short time later 141 X B-29 arrived and the AA fire damaged 4 of them as they unloaded on the Mitsubishi engine plant for very heavy damage. Another wave of 126 X B-29 then came on and the flak damaged 2 of them as they hit the Nakajima engine plant for heavy damage. A third wave of 149 X B-29 then caused very heavy damage to the heavy industry.

Bangkok was bombed by 150 X Liberator VI (18 damaged). The planes accounted for very heavy port damage, a huge number of secondary explosions were claimed and personnel losses were thought to have been very heavy.

Georgetown was flying a CAP of 13 X Zeke who managed to intercept 55 X Mosquito FB.VI and 34 X Thunderbolt II. The Thunderbolts downed 4 Zekes and damaged another before the Japanese broke off and hightailed it for the clouds. There was sporadic and inaccurate AA fire, which did no harm to the bombers as they inflicted moderate damage on the airfield, triggered a few secondary explosions and there were extremely light casualties.

Balikpapan underwent a fighter sweep made by 71 X P-38J who bounced 5 X Zeke and 1 X Tony. All of the Japanese planes were splashed at no cost to the Americans.

Naga's airstrip was lightly damaged by an Allied strike and troop losses were moderate. Another attack resulted in moderately light damage to the port, some secondary explosions were reported and casualties were moderate. A B-24D was trailing smoke as it departed. Allied artillery inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese.

Manila was struck by Allied aircraft and the flak damaged 12 X B-24J as they dumped their bombs on the port for light damage, a few secondary explosions and moderate personnel losses.

Rabaul underwent an air raid that accomplished nothing.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division suffered heavy casualties in an air attack.

Toyohara's AA defenses damaged 2 Invaders as an Allied raid inflicted light airfield damage and a few secondary explosions.

At Clark Field Allied artillery caused very heavy Japanese losses.

Ed wonders how long his luck will hold. He has adequate fuel and munitions and short runs from base to target. There are no mines, subs haven't been around and Japanese planes are virtually nonexistent. He doubts that the Japanese will continue to allow him a free hand and he makes a mental note to himself that the next meeting of his ship captains he'll remind them to keep on their toes, not that it's really necessary.

Gil tosses down his shot of whiskey and shuffles off happy to have survived another mission over Japan. He never imagined that fighting a war could be so boring. Today's mission was typical as the flight to and from Nagoya was long and boring. The bomb run itself was short and terrifying as the flak always scares the hell out of the guys. He also wonders why nobody invents a way for them to bomb a target where they don't have to fly level and straight for so long as that's what gets people killed.

Chris will be flying over Pescadores tomorrow as the USN is going to throw some planes at the defenders to help soften up the island for the pending invasion. He saw troops boarding ships as the Yorktown sailed. This is the final phase of Operation Noose.

Combat

The SS Sturgeon, 71 miles NE of Johore Bharu, tried to line up an attack on 3 DDs who turned the tables on her.

The SS Cod was attacked by 5 DDs 64 miles E of Teloekbetoeng, but she managed to avoid being harmed. The DDs then reacquired her a few hours later and the cat and mouse game resumed. Once more the Cod avoided damage. Around noon the Cod hit a DD with a fish that caused heavy damage and fires, but the other tin cans hammered her for it. Now with moderate systems damage and moderate flooding the sub will make for a friendly port for repairs and then it'll be off to a yard for the serious work.

29 miles E of Johore Bharu the SS Blackfish attacked 2 AKs and 5 MSWs, hitting an AK with a torpedo that ignited a fire.

Gumma was struck by 176 X B-29 who were greeted by 4 X Zeke, 16 X Shinden, 61 X Frank and 25 X Tony. The fighters lost a Zeke (1 damaged), a Shinden (5 damaged), 9 Franks (39 damaged) and 5 Tonys (11 damaged) in their attacks. The AA fire added to the mayhem and 35 bombers were lost and 73 were damaged as they managed to do negligible damage to the heavy industry.

Asahigawa was raided by 64 X B-24D, 24 X P-51D and 42 X P-38J for light damage to the Mitsubishi engine plant.

Pescadores had moderate airfield damage and some secondary explosions from an air raid.

Ichang had a lone George flying when 77 X B-25J (6 damaged) and 45 X P-40N arrived. The Chinese Warhawks disposed of the George and the airfield took moderately heavy damage, a secondary explosion was claimed and casualties were moderate.

Bangkok's airfield was hammered by 69 X Liberator VI (1 downed, 15 damaged) for heavy damage, there were a very large number of secondary explosions observed, 3 X Topsy were trashed and heavy personnel losses.

Naga had moderate airstrip damage, a few of secondary explosions and extremely light casualties from 2 strikes made by Allied planes. 3 Liberators were damaged. The Allied artillery barrages accounted for heavy Japanese losses.

Gili Gili had it's airstrip lightly damaged and the IJA 21st Division sustained moderate troop losses in a couple of air raids. In the late afternoon another strike arrived and the Japanese absorbed moderate casualties from the Allied attack.

Toyohara was hit by Allied planes and the defenders managed to damage a Mitchell. The airstrip had negligible damage, there were some secondary explosions seen and personnel losses were negligible.

At Clark Field Allied artillery inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Today Elaine sat through a game that the Pirates won. They defeated the Phillies 3-2. She didn't go to yesterday's game as her father was visited by a buddy and they went together, enjoying a 4-0 Pirates win over the Phils. She had a bag of peanuts, a hot dog and some pop. Now her stomach is rumbling and she can't wait to get home to be close to the bathroom, if she needs it. The time spent with her father was nice and when she got home there were 3 letters from Gil waiting for her.

Jay busily sharpens his bayonet while wondering if he'll ever have to use it. The thought of being stabbed or slashed scares him more than a bullet for some reason. Today was a fairly decent day as the Japanese didn't lob any ordinance his way and the sun was actually out for a good part of the day.

Red listens to some music as there's nothing else for him to do. Lucky lies by his feet, snoring. Today some of the crew had a good laugh when the dog broke wind and quickly turned his head to see where the noise came from. There's not much to provides laughs as the routine aboard the Palawan is mind numbing. At least he gets to listen in on things and he usually has a visitor or 2 who want to hear the news or some music. Red has also taken to keeping the latest results of the baseball games played and the current standings as most of the guys want to know how their teams are doing.

Night comes and Sam heads back to his hut dismayed that the dog still hasn't turned up.

After being informed of what's next on the agenda after the PIs and the Pescadores fall Harry asks about invading Japan itself. A hush comes over the room and when he prompts them an officer leaves and returns a short while later with a folder. Combat

The SS Gar was patrolling 63 miles W of Belitung when 3 DDs happened by, found and attacked her. A short while later 5 more DDs joined the fight as the original 3 tin cans departed. The sub was subjected to a devastating pounding and with heavy systems damage and heavy flooding it's doubtful that the sub will survive long enough to reach a port.

The Old Gals conducted a naval bombardment of Pescadores before returning to base and the CA Alaska was struck twice by the coastal guns. The airfield was moderately damaged, the port was heavily damaged, there were a couple of secondary explosions observed and casualties were placed at moderate. Allied troops stormed ashore taking extremely heavy casualties. The CL Phoenix was hit by 11 shells, the CL Oklahoma was hit 10 times, the CL Amsterdam was hit 5 times, the DE Finnigan was hit 6 times and was on fire, the DD Stormes was struck for 2 hits and she sank, the MSW Saunter was hit 6 times for heavy damage and was burning, the MSW Buoyant ate 6 shells for heavy damage and fires and many LCIs sustained multiple hits (many were heavily damaged and were on fire), 3 of them went down and another 5 were scuttled before the day ended. Return naval gunfire was thought to have inflicted moderate Japanese personnel losses. Many transports were damaged by the AA fire over Pescadores as they disgorged the paratroopers. The Bako Base Force was bombed for light casualties. The USN threw it's aircraft into the fight and they did moderate damage to the airstrip, moderate port damage, there was a secondary explosion claimed and troop losses were placed at extremely light. 3 SBDs and a Helldiver were damaged in the attack. The Allied assault swept aside the Japanese defenders and they seized the base. The Japanese had very heavy casualties and the Americans sustained heavy losses of their own. The Japanese have now been virtually wiped out and the island has been declared secured.

The SS Sawfish hit a DD with a torpedo 20 miles W of Hong Kong. Later the sub attacked the damaged DD again and hit it with a torpedo, adding to the ship's woes.

The SS Salmon, 71 miles NE of Pusan, came across a very large number of Japanese ships and hit a TK with a torpedo that set it ablaze. The Salmon tried another attack on the ships later on, but failed to inflict any harm.

Tokyo was swept by 50 X P-51D who bounced 21 X Zeke, 55 X Shinden, 19 X Tony and 38 X Frank. The planes tumbled from the sky as the Japanese lost 10 Zekes, 17 Shindens (1 damaged), 19 Tonys, and 24 Franks. The Americans headed home with empty guns, 21 planes had been shot down and 2 others were limping along.

Ichang was raided by 34 X B-25J and 27 X P-40N and the AA fire damaged 4 of the bombers. The airfield was lightly damaged, there were a couple of secondary explosions claimed, a Sonia was burning and casualties were moderate.

Georgetown was attacked by 64 X Mosquito FB.VI, 9 X P-47D, 45 X Thunderbolt II and 6 X Spitfire VIII who were met by 15 X Zeke. The Japanese fighters made a half hearted attempt to repel the Allied planes losing 3 Zekes and 2 others were damaged before they retired. The airfield took light damage, there were a couple of secondary explosions observed and troop losses were very light.

Amboina was struck by 28 X B-24J and 92 X P-38J for very light airstrip damage, some secondary explosions were reported and light casualties. Another air strike was made in the afternoon and it lightly damaged the port, triggered a fuel tank explosions and there were 4 A-26Bs damaged by the ground fire.

Naga's port was bombed by Allied aircraft twice for light damage, a few secondary explosions, negligible losses and 2 B-24Js were damaged. The IJA 43rd Division was struck by aircraft 3 times for moderate losses and 17 Invaders and 6 Mitchells were damaged in the strikes. The IJA 55th Ind. Mixed Brigade was attacked and had heavy casualties and the Americans sustained 2 damaged A-26Bs. Allied artillery dished out heavy losses to the Japanese today.

Clark Field was hit by 34 X B-24J (8 damaged) for moderate airfield damage and heavy casualties. Allied artillery barrages inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese defenders.

Naha was swept by 55 X P-51D who pounced on 35 X Zeke, destroying 31 of them at the cost of the loss of 1 Mustang and 3 others damaged.

Gili Gili was raided twice for light airfield damage and very light losses while the IJA 21st Division sustained heavy casualties.

Toyohara was tagged for a secondary explosion and very light casualties from an air raid that had an Invader damaged.

At Manila a Helldiver was lost and 5 others were damaged as they hit the port for light damage, a secondary explosion and heavy personnel losses.

84 miles S of Banjarmasin the SS O21 attacked a lone AK and hit it with 2 fish that did heavy damage and caused the eruption of fires.

At Sian the Japanese artillery inflicted moderate casualties on the Chinese who stormed the defenses. Both sides had extremely heavy losses, with the Chinese getting the short end of the stick.

Lt Kurt Wirth stepped off of the transport and is now at his new home, Tori Shima. He's a green replacement pilot for the 51st Fighter group. Today is not the day you want to arrive here as the group lost 14 pilots in a sweep of Tokyo and the remaining pilots aren't feeling all that warm and fuzzy. Kurt was taken to HQs where he checked in and was told where he would find his home, a Quonset Hut. He didn't know which cot would be his so he just stuck his duffel bad in a corner, figuring that somebody would arrive soon and show him. When the guys arrived he quietly stayed out of their way as they silently took care of somebody's things and then one of them asked if he was the new replacement. When Kurt answered he was told that that was now his cot. Nobody bothered asking for his name or offered to tell him theirs. He just quietly stashed his gear and followed them for chow later on. They all ate and Kurt felt like he was invisible, but he kept his mouth shut and figured that sooner or later somebody would talk to him. Hours later he was staring at the ceiling while the other guys decided that they would start a poker game. One of them asked Kurt if he felt like losing some money and Kurt joined them. After playing cards for a couple of hours he started to feel a bit better as chatter around the table eased him into the group. One of the guys announced that he was tired and was going to sleep, “Besides,” he said, “The new guy cleaned me out.” There was some laughter and Kurt sheepishly laughed too. He had managed to win tonight. Not only did he make some money, which they told him he would lose back later on, but they also know his name now.

The SS Gar lost her fight against the sea when a bulkhead gave way and the boat rapidly filled with water.

Red is listening to some music over the radio, for a change and when one of the guys entered the radio room he coughed and fanned the smoke with his hands. “Red, somebody could think that this place was on fire the smoke's so thick.” Red smiles and tells him to open the port hole for some ventilation. Then realizes how bad it must be as Lucky isn't there.

Sandy got a few letters from Bill today and she had read and reread them. She's happy to get them, but she wonders why the war in the Pacific isn't over yet. All of the news has been good about this place and that falling to the victorious Allies, but still the Japanese fight on. Do they really think that they won't get crushed by the rest of the world?

Jay heard the scuttlebutt that the big push will start soon and that while they work their way towards Manila another large force will also be moving that way with the Japs caught in between. “It all sounds so simple except that we're the ones that have to push them out of their holes and keep them running then,” he says to his pal.

The first A bomb exploded at 5:30AM at Los Alamos, Nevada.

Combat

The SS Plunger hit a lone AK with a torpedo 72 miles SW of Balikapan, doing heavy damage and causing fires.

The SS Sabalo, 81 miles NE of Batavia, was attacked by 5 DDs. She managed to escape before any real damage was done to her.

Nagasaki was swept by 10 X P-51D who encountered 11 X Shinden, 3 X Tony and 15 X Frank. 4 Franks were splashed and 2 Mustangs were lost, another took damage. The American pilots were more than a little miffed as they were supposed to be part of a much larger group of fighters that never appeared. Then 88 X B-24J and 130 X P-38J arrived and were intercepted by 11 X Shinden, 3 X Tony and 10 X Frank. The fighters whirled and swirled about and all of the Japanese planes were shot down. 7 Lightnings were lost and another was limping home. The AA fire damaged 14 of the bombers who attacked the port doing heavy damage to it, there were some secondary explosions seen and casualties were thought to have been moderate. Ships in the harbor were also pounded.
AK Horaizan Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP Otori Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AK Namba Maru 5 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Eisho Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Kuramasan Maru 6 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Daikyu Maru 4 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Dowa Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AP Ayatosan Maru 5 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Ryuyu Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire
AP Kyuma Maru 1 bomb hit, heavy damage
AK Joosan Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
AK Teiyu Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AP Minto Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
DD Hatsushima 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
AK Rizan Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire, heavy damage
Allied HQs thinks that some of these ships were damaged in prior raids. An hour later 40 X P-51D arrived and bounced 15 X Frank, destroying 11 of them at the cost of 1 lost Mustang.

Amboina had it's airstrip moderately damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were claimed and personnel losses were extremely light. A Liberator was damaged by flak. Another strike arrived a short time later and 2 PB4Ys were damaged as they added extremely light damage to the airfield. Another raid did extremely light damage to the airfield and the cost was 1 A-26B Invader damaged and 1 PB4Y Liberator destroyed.

Gili Gili was hit for very light airfield damage and the IJA 21st Division absorbed moderate casualties in a pair of air strikes.

At Clark field the IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade had very heavy losses from an air raid in which 5 X B-24J, 6 X PB4Y and 6 X TBM were damaged. An Allied assault gained no ground and both sides sustained extremely heavy losses, with the Japanese having about twice as many casualties as the Allied attackers.

The 39th Chinese Corps, 32 miles W of Sian, was attacked by 26 X Frances, 24 X Judy and 24 X Zeke for moderate casualties.

At Naga Allied artillery dished out heavy losses.

The SS Blackfish was struck by a bomb and now will head for a shipyard for repairs with light systems damage and moderately light flooding.

The British, Indian and American troops continue loading at Sabang and Andaman Island for the long awaited Operation Swift Sword.

Gil got 2 letters from Elaine today and he found a semi quiet spot and read them. He can't wait for this damned war to be over with and he's almost to the point of wishing that they could bomb Japan every day.

Jay heard the scuttlebutt about Clark Field being assaulted and later on Sarge stops by and when asked he confirmed that it was true. “So remember what I told you guys. I want you ready because we're next to get out of these holes that throw the bums all the way back to Tokyo.”

Truman was happy to hear that finally what is hoped to be the final offensive in the PIs has begun. He turned paled when he asked and was told about casualties. The people are getting war weary and the troops in Europe are restless, wanting to go home as “their” war is over. Those troops want nothing to do with fighting the Japanese.

Combat

The SS O16 was attacked by 5 X PC 24 miles S of Singapore. In the late afternoon the sub found a DD and mounted an unsuccessful attack 23 miles N of Muntok. The sub will now head back to her base for repairs to her light systems damage.

Not far away from where the O16 was attacked the SS Blackfish got some pretty rough treatment from 5 PCs. The Blackfish managed to escape, but not much time elapsed before 3 PGs and a PC found and attacked her. In the afternoon the Blackfish's rotten day continued as a PG and 5 PCs added to her misery. Considering that the Blackfish was already heading to a yard for repairs her skipper considers them lucky to still be in one piece.

The SS Ronquil, 77 miles NW of Nagasaki, was attacked by 2 PGs and 3 PCs. The sub took very minor damage and managed to elude her attackers. An hour later the 5 PC acquired the sub and gave her a horrific pounding. Just after dark the Ronquil was attacked once more by 2 PGs and 3 PCs, adding to the sub's miseries. It'll take lots of hard work and more than a little bit of luck to get the boat to a friendly port to save her.

89 miles SE of Banjarmasin the SS S-38 spotted and attacked a lone AK, hitting it with 3 torpedoes that tore out the port side of the ship, sinking it.

Shimuzu was bombed by 93 X B-29 and they were intercepted by 36 X Myrt. 3 Myrts were shot down and 16 were damaged as they tried in vain to defend the Mitsubishi engine factory, which was moderately damaged. None of the Superforts were harmed. Then 16 X Myrt tried to stop a strike of 103 X B-29 and 3 Myrts were downed and 6 damaged. The heavy industry took moderate damage in the attack and no B-29s were damaged. A third attack was made by 173 X B-29 and 15 X Myrt threw themselves at the big bombers. 3 Myrts went down and another was damaged as the American bombers caused heavy damage to the Nakajima engine factory.

Akita was raided by 171 X B-29 (5 damaged), 50 X B-24D (1 downed, 4 damaged), 24 X P-51D and 7 X P-38J who did heavy damage to the oil facilities there.

Bangkok's port was lightly damaged by a strike made by 27 X Liberator VI (3 downed, 16 damaged). There were some secondary explosions seen and casualties were placed at heavy. The another wave of 123 X Liberator VI appeared and the AA fire damaged 15 of them. The airfield was very heavily damaged, there was a large number of secondary explosions observed, 4 X Topsy were destroyed and personnel losses were thought to have been very heavy.

Amboina was hit by an air raid for moderate damage to the airstrip, a couple of secondary explosions and light casualties. Another strike in which a PB4Y was damaged by ground fire added very light damage to the airfield. Another raid did light airfield damage and the flak damaged 3 Invaders and a PB4Y.

Gili Gili was hit twice for light airfield damage

At Tavoy the IJA 128th Ind. Mixed Brigade took moderate losses and 7 Mosquito FB.VIs were damaged in the attack.

At Clark Field the IJA 54th Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped by Allied planes and took extremely heavy casualties and 5 Invaders, 6 Mitchells, 2 Jugs and 2 Lightnings (1 downed) were damaged. The IJA 58th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit by Allied aircraft and a Helldiver was downed and 7 others were damaged as the unit absorbed light losses. An Allied assault on the Japanese defenders didn't gain any ground, but the Japanese had extremely heavy losses and the Americans suffered very heavy casualties of their own.

4 IJN PCs 138 miles N of Tori Shima were attacked by 14 X PB4Y (4 damaged) and 47 X P-38J. A bomb struck 1 of the PCs, setting it on fire. PC Ikino

Tokyo was swept by 113 X P-51D who pounced on a gaggle of 26 X Zeke, 38 X Shinden, 33 X Frank and 19 X Tony. 24 Zekes, 30 Shindens, 31 Franks and 19 Tonys were blasted from the sky. The Americans lost 18 Mustangs and 6 more were damaged.

At Naga the Allied artillery bombardments caused moderate Japanese losses.

The Lucky 11 rode over for the debriefing in a truck that broke down. By the time they arrived Hoppy said, “I hope they gave away all of the rot gut and have the good stuff for us.” The guys shared a laugh and then went through the debriefing. Unfortunately there was plenty of rot gut so they got some for their shots. “If we were officers they wouldn't give us this,” said Landy. Then they went for some chow. After eating Gil went back to the hut and hit the hay.

Not that they're in a hurry, but the guys are restless knowing that any time now they'll be ordered to hit the Japanese positions. Jay wonders what it's like to get pounded by the artillery and planes on an almost nonstop basis. He's ready to go and has managed to obtain another canteen and bandolier of ammo. He's learned that you can never have to much water or ammo and that being out of either one is not a pretty picture.
