Siege of Odessa

Odessa had a large garrison-it looks like it will take two months for it to surrender. Apparently, the Fleet failed to blockade the port.

There are no Russian non garrison units anywhere near the 2nd Army. It will charge the walls again-then move on Kiev.

The Ottoman lead in Glory continues to grow.

Istanbul has achieved a level 6 docks and is now working on level 7. Greece may achieve that level also, but is not a high priority. Aydin (and a few other cities) are still improving farms. It is not that more farm goods are needed, but is a precaution. It is still possible that some emergency may arise (like all Europe attacking the Sultan's peace loving empire) which would cause a significant increase in taxes. Should that occur, the added production ability would be sorely needed.

Glory Adjustments

This report shows the increase from last month. With such increases it will be very difficult for any other empire or nation to surpass the O.E. in Glory. The only way will be to defeat the mighty Empire.

The only other nation to have had such monthly increases was Spain-but thise days are long gone.

edit-glory adjustments, not culture.

Culture Standings

It did not take long for the effects of this little war with Russia to have some impact on culture standings. Russia has already slipped down a notch. France has a one point advantage-not very significant.

Political Report

Ottoman diplomats are quite busy these days. Russian moral needs to be driven down a bit and relations with France need to be kept at a high level.

Another expensive training doctrine was acquired; divisional artillery. The cost was 216 in experience IIRC. I chose that particular one as that seems to be the best one that Russia has that the Ottomans don't. Overall, the Ottoman Army has approx a 2 to 1 advantage in doctrines over Russia-this approach of cancelling any advantage it may have should work well. The one doctrine it does have which I have little intention of acquiring is the winter fighting ability. It is very expensive for the O.E.-with little opportunity for use.

Odessa falls. This was a bit costly in manpower, but the O.E. has plenty of reserves.

Strategic Map

Nearly the whole Russian Army is holed up in Moscow. There are just a few units in the west. It seems the Czar is not anxious for battle.

The large British force that appears to be in Denmark is a bit of a trick I think. An embarked force appears larger than it really is.

South Russia

The 2nd Army has completed the operation at Odessa and is now heading towards Kiev. It will charge the walls upon its arrival. The 2nd is somewhat under strength at this time. It lost about 20,000 men at Odessa and has suffered some hefty marching attrition. It actually is in no condition for a major battle right now, but I was confident that the Czar would not make any radical movements.

All units in the 2nd Army are benefiting from high moral replacements. The 6th corps still has a way to go to come up to standards.

Istanbul

The level 7 docks are a fairly expensive item-especially in wood. After this project is complete the capital province will simply churn out goods for trade at a maximum rate. Any further expansion (likely guns) will be on a low priority unless there is actually a threat.

A good number of improvements were completed this month. There are many that could be undertaken at double speed, but for a shortage of income those are postponed.

Battle Reports

Kiev fell rather quickly. Again, it was a costly assault, but the troops were allowed to have some recreation in the city to make amends. The Egyptian Army has arrived on the scene also. The Egyptian Army has at least one unit with the "blood thirsty" trait-auto success in plundering.

It is not really the Sultans intent to force Russia to surrender, but it may come to that. In the meantime, Russia must pay the price for forcing the huge expenditures on this needless war. The only method for that right now is through plundering.

Glory Standings

The Empire now has nearly a 450 point lead over the nearest competitor-Great Britain. The lead is only growing greater with each passing month.

Izmir has completed another level of barracks. This may be its last development for this era. It is a prime producer of food and wool. It was always difficult to assign enough labor to finish a project in a reasonable amount of time-and time is now at a premium.

Culture Standings

Presto!-the Ottoman Empire is in the lead in culture. Temporarily occupied Russian culture centers are the reason for this change, however, there are many culture centers under construction. The position should hold for a long time to come.

Political Report

The Russian diplomats do not seem very effective in getting rid of my fine diplomat spreading goodwill to the Russian folks. This slow picking away at moral may look like a waste of effort, but over time it can be an important factor.

The Czar has chosen a good doctrine for his army. Organized withdrawal can come in very handy-especially in his current situation.

France is sending money to the Ottoman Empire. This is much appreciated. It should not be a big burden to France now. Its economy has surged since the victory over Spain.

Russian Campaign

The 2nd Army is moving further into Russia. The Carpathian, Egyptian and 5th Armies are moving into positions to safe guard the depot chain.

There is some doubt as to how to proceed with the campaign. I hoped the Czar would make some reasonable offer before this gets ugly. That does not look like it is going to happen. Moscow could be reached before winter, but victory against the combined Russian forces is not guaranteed. A possible defeat of the 2nd Army at Moscow just before winter is not a pretty thought. There is the possibility of loosing depots during a retreat and then being hounded by a victorious Russian army.

Under these circumstances it is hoped that the Russians move out of Moscow so that a battle can be joined during August. If that does not occur, then a withdrawal must be made. Another attempt can be made in 1811.

Glory Adjustments

This may be a record for glory increase for a non battle monthly period. An increase of 32 points in one month is a significant event. France is increasing by around 21 points per month. Generally, all others are increasing approx 10 or 12 points per month.

Another two training doctrines were acquired last month. Those two cost 90 experience points each. The O.E. is now receiving approx 120 in experience per quarter. Several of those points are from occupied Russia.

Russian AO

The 2nd Army captured Kharkov easily enough. There is still no sign of the Russian Army moving forward. One more effort will be made for a meeting engagement-an advance on Orel.

The 2nd Army has recovered most of its strength. It is still more than 10,000 under establishment.

Another large batch of provincial improvements were completed. There are a few more courts to complete. Waste has once again fallen to zero, but here are some possibilities of another spat of growth of the Empire. The Sultan wishes to avoid another bout of waste. There are no specific plans for attaining new provinces, but the Empire should be ready-just in case.

Russia has lost approximately 40% of its culture due to the occupation of its provinces. Great Britain, Austria and the O.E. are enjoying the fruits of this quiet war.

Russian AO

This is the high point of the 1810 invasion of Russia. The Czar did not come out for a fight, and the Ottoman forces deployed to the area were too weak to go into Moscow. It is now time to head south for the winter. The forces will not speed march out initially-just in case the Czar wants some action-I want to be close enough. I would be happy to oblige in September or October-just a little further south.

Thanks, Zap and Rondo-I'm flattered. I not so sure about the expertly managed though. I made quite a few mistakes-and some lucky guesses. I will pat myself on the back though for sticking to my economic development grand plan and for choosing the correct order (apparently correct) for the nations to fight and defeat.

About Russia, I never had any plans for defeating Russia. The Czar did irritate me enough to make me want to go to war with Russia on a few occasions, but it still was not in the plans. It was the Czar that eventually DoWed Turkey as part of an ill prepared alliance with Prussia. Honestly, there are risks involved in trying to take Russia out in a swift campaign. If I was to send the 1st Army on to Moscow, it would be unstoppable, but what if another power decides to strike the O.E. while its main forces are 1500 km away from the glorious capital? It is a bit of a dilemma. But again, I did not invade Russia with the intention of burning Moscow to the ground, but just to punish the Czar a bit. Russia does not have anything I really want anyway. There are a few provinces that would be nice, but I don't "need" those. What the O.E. needs is money-and Russia has none-now Sweden.....

Glory

Another month came and went with no action in the east. Ottoman glory did still continue to increase due to mundane and varied supremacies. Perhaps before the end of this era there will be further massive gains from battle.

The 109 game crew has had a few tough months-difficulties thrown by mother nature and and other things. However, the game is once again moving right along-

Sevastopol had been secured. As sea supply is not only a viable option for Ottoman forces, it is the safer method. At some point in time, it may be better to use the Crimea as a base rather than Odessa. The forces in that area will be withdrawn for the winter also.
