Daughter is off to a party in - God help me - her little black party dress and 3in heels.

Worrying times for any father of a young girl! My daughter is only 8 so I have a few years to go before I have to worry about that kind of thing. Can't say I'm looking forward to it though...

That's what I said 8 years ago.

Oh yeah... I had some friends who had a beautiful Old Town Canadienne 17' canoe. It had a Kevlar hull, mahoghany gunwhales and ash seats. Absolutely gorgeous... so much so that they didn't want to take it into any whitewater because it could get scratched. I was thinking that as a kevlar hulled canoe it would handle rocks better than a fibreglass one.

I used to do a lot of flatwater marathon racing. A few years back I went in a canoe race on a flooded creek once and one guy had a beautiful kevlar kayak. He got caught in a particularly vicious eddy and wrapped his boat around the a snag (fallen tree) out in the river. The two ends on the boat actually touched but he was able to clamber out onto the branch and free the boat which sprung back into shape. He just emptied it out, climbed in and continued on his way. Absolutely incredble as a fibreglass kayak would have just smashed to pieces and he would have been in real trouble. The only damage the boat sustained was a couple of kinks in the hull (where it bent) and some of the internal fittings tore away from the sides when the hull deformed.

That event has totally sold me on the strength of Kevlar but it does have it's drawbacks. Kevlar is expensive, tends to delaminate and is difficult to repair. More than once I have held my boat over a campfire to cure an emergency fibreglass repair so I would be able to continue the next day. (The Katherine River Marathon in Australia's Northern Territory is a great challenge but very tough on the equipment). I would not have been able to do this with a Kevlar boat.

Reg, let's hope that you're the only one that let him have 'it' last Christmas, mate. Damn scary stuff.

You too. CNN showed the fireworks from Wellington-what's the name of that big ol' tower there anyways- and Sydney earlier today. Very nice. How's 2010 so far for you?

Oh, and so sorry about the 60 degree temps in So Cal, Osterhaut. I'm sure better days are on the horizon. (Going down to 19 in North Carolina tonight...a two dog night, for sure.)

It's a good thing New Year's was on a Thursday. That means three days off; I don't think I could face starting work tomorrow...

Jeremy Brett forever!

Yah. A real princess of a guy, especially in a black party dress and three-inch heels.

Brett was the best of the Holmes portrayers, I think. He had the benefit of writers who tried to stay close to "the canon" when crafting episodes. Too bad he couldn't have stayed healthy for awhile longer.

Who did you like better as Watson, Burke or Hardwicke?

Rathbone had the "look," but also the misfortune of working with lesser material not particularly well rooted in the original. Those WWII-based episodes take the whole Holmes thing out of its proper context. And the Nigel Bruce Watson? Please. The best moment of the Rathbone movies for me was his song-and-dance schtick in "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes."

I did like this new movie, in the same way many have mentioned, as an entertaining, but not faithful, rendering. I suppose you've got to have action these days to draw an audience.

Two problems: the villain (and, hence, the plot) was silly and uninteresting, and the Irene Adler paste-on job? Please.

Hello past.
And ditto.

David Tennant has been Doctor Who for three Series - mind you he is Scottish not English .

Yes, but compared to other successful series, its still short though for "Who" his tenure is fairly long. There seems to be a English fear of typecasting not as prevalient in the States. The irritating part is that half of the actors who do short runs as the Doctor later come to regret the decision but of course it's too late by then. (Davidson was probably the best example)

Warspite1

I agree. I was really disappointed when Christopher Eccleston - a superb actor - quit after one series. Luckily Tennant was chosen next and was just as good if not better.

I really liked Eccleston, and actually stopped watching for a while. But after a bit Tennat really took over the part just fine. Sorry he is leaving.
