Status: offline 		OK guys, I need a recommendation or recommendations. I just finished Ambrose's book on D-Day. I want more. I want to learn more about the time from there to the liberation of Paris. All recommendations are welcome. Thank you.

No , I didn't do much that didn't directly affect out trip (the books stores were to find city and local maps,histories, etc). NYC might be wasted upon me, as I've always been a Pub rather than club person (not a big dancer). I am very fond of very high end cocktail bars,theatre,symphony and the occassional opera. They tell me the symphony's pretty good (I'm dubious, but if they have a good chamber group I'll be happy). I see lots and lots of road trips in our future , with a couple of weekend train trips to Chicago thrown in.


The coolest thing (besides the SAC museum) is that the gate sentry , right outside the building that my wife will work in , is a B-17f Called "Homesick angel" that's painted up in 1942 eight AF colors! She's absolutely beatiful!

One thing that I will really miss are the big forrests (especially pine forests) that I'm used to. Not a whole lot of trees by comparison. But we will definately make the best of our time there.


The history part I can certainly understand. But as for maps, you do realize they have this new thing now? Its called the internet. I mean, it might be a series of tubes, but its pretty good for stuff such as maps, and even a bit of history.


Hard to use the internet in a car. Yes, I have GPS, but a set of paper maps , a road atlas and a gazzatter has save my a$$ many, many times. I always use the "belt and braces approach" as our Brit friends would say. Or as we used to say in Naval Air "redundancy is life!".

Naw. That's just the strike going in. I swept the field with a A6M2 daitai from a carrier and caught up a large P-39 group in training in the sweep. It wasn't pretty.

If you like Ambrose (and I do), you'll probably like Pegasus Bridge-about the coup de main against the eastern bridges on Sword Beach. More detailed than his D-Day book and worth the (quick) read.

Status: offline 		The only thing I didn't like about his D-Day book was his speculation on the ME-262. That if it was authorized sooner it may have made an invasion un-doable. Horse hockey. The Jumo engines in the 262 were junk. They had to be replaced every 20 to 30 hours of operation. The British were bringing the meteor into production, a fact he doesn't even discuss. The 262 could have been countered early if necessary.

Caen: Anvil of Victory by Alexander McKee
Overlord by Max Hastings
Six Armies in Normandy by John Keegan
Decision in Normandy by Carlo d'Este

They should keep you busy for a couple of weeks.

I don't know the exact definition either, if there is one, but it's definitly an insult. I recall on the TV show Married with Children (an insult in itself) that Peggy's maiden name was Wanker. Her family was always portrayed as low-life, in-breeding imbiciles.
