Here's my chance to say "I told you so."

The "Worthy Opponent" list that has started in the Opponents Wanted subforum is born from a great intention, but no good will come of it.  The wheels are already starting to come off the cart.

You know, what's so bad about calling someone out for being a great opponent with a tried and true track record?

Is it people's narcissism or competitive edge that assumes hard feelings if their names aren't on there? Why doesn't it make sense to 'vet' potential PBEM partners? Haven't you guys ever asked or looked around for 'references' before taking on a PBEM partner?

It's bad for the gaming experience if folks like Joker Alpha Papa Alpha November hoodwink 25 partners into starting PBEMs with the promise of being a good partner. There's a lot of let down partners when this guy bolts one month into the game.

I don't understand why we can't be a little more mature in the way we're looking at this.

As I mentioned, the idea has the best of intentions.  Then, people get involved.  Not even "real" people, but relatively anonymous internet posters with less inhibitions and manners than they might normally have in a face to face conversation.

Maybe I'm becoming more cynical, like T , or maybe I'm just becoming more "experienced" with the way things work online, but I can usually see these things running off the road from a mile away.

I do think it's a great idea to make it much easier to find committed PBEM partners and avoid the losers.  I just wish I knew a way, other than word of mouth and personal references, to get it done.

Well, for me, I'll continue to sing the praises of good opponents. If someone gets their undies in a bunch about me being complimentary of my fellow gamers, Tango Sierra to them.

Maybe. But a few of you recall the last time I got involved in such a scheme. (My sig banner referes to it). I really don't need my tailfeathers burned off again. Maybe the good advice from USS America,Mynok and Terminus has finally sunk in (but I somehow doubt it, common sense was never a strong point of mine) , but I'll set this one out , thank you.

Don't bother unless you want to contribute to my jackpot winnings.  I have the winning Powerball and Megamillions tickets for the next 13 weeks.

Err.....don't you still live in North Carolina? Does Nebraska and North Carolina have some kind of sharing deal? (Sorry, I know absolutely nothing about lotteries---except that they are very bad odds. If I feel that I want to throw some money away , I can now jump in the car and drive 12 miles to Iowa....they have full casino gambling! Somehow I don't feel the urge!

Steve,
Many of us feel that you were doing the right thing at the time, so wear your burned tail feathers as a badge of honor.

I won't be on Aprezto's list for a good reason. I have yet to start an AE PBEM. I had an opponent lined up to play the Big Babes when it was ready, but he ran into major real world situation before we even got started. My old opponent from WITP, El Cid, no longer participates in this forum. I'm really more concerned with identifying and avoiding the bad actors such as the one you identified and ruffled.

Thanks for the kind words COS , but I just blew it! And my top with it. I'm totally sick of the whole substance of that thread, I find it insulting, demeaning and just plain stupid! In essence someone is saying , "I'm too lazy to research my opponents,so do it for me! Bring it to my chair, and do a credit report and Dun and Bradstreet on them while your at it! And bring me a latte'! And a ice cream sunday while your at it!" And in the mean while ,let's get all kinds of hurt feelings, and overblown love fests , while everyone needs to list all their friends, or people feel annoyed because they aren't on it!

What next? Credit and background checks? If your not on the list are you unworthy?

I don't know how this forum has existed all this time without such a thread (PLEASE INSERT BIG FLAMMING SARCASM SMILEY HERE!!!!!!!!!!).
