This expands bitmap 338 to show:

1.) Olive Drab P-39 with 1942 Star in 1942 (new)
2.) Olive Drab P-39 with 1943 Blue/White Bars in 1943 (existing)
3.) Silver P-39 with 1943 Blue/White Bars in 1944/45/46 (new)

This lets us add advanced P-39s like the P-79 and P-63 to the game; since it's really remarkable how alike all the Cobras were -- to the point of having to count rivets and panel lines...

This will be included in version 3 of my Unified Sides.

P.S. for some reason PB is giving me fits today, but trust me there are markings included on the art!

I've played around a bit with Paint.Net. So here are a few Axis candidates not yet on your list:

Ju88 A-17 in Japanese markings. This was the torpedo bomber variant; it carried two torpedoes:

I can easily make the Ju-88 and He-111 in japanese colors with my raw art files...but why would the Japanese want 'em?

They already have a set of quite nice planes with very long range in the BETTY.

Self sealed tanks, and armor is a very good reason. Besides the zerstorer version of the Ju-88 could be the ultimate ship killer: cannos, guns, and two torpedoes.

(editing 1 day later ) : Plus a medium bomber with a good amount of bomb load, plus armor can be a very valuable addition to IJAF.

I think the bomber variant of the Ju 88 would have made a good alternative to the Ki-48-II, with its ability to carry up to 1400 kg internally, or up to 3000 kg externally. Yes, the G3/G4 had longer ranges, but the Ju 88 carried two torpedoes and was probably quite a bit sturdier.

The Fw 187 was another promising design that didn't fit the world view of the RLM. It's not implausible that Japan might have bought the single-seater design just like they bought the He 100. The Fw 187 could have used the Kawasaki engine already in service in the Ki-32 which had the right sort of power output, no need to wait until the Japanese industry got a DB 601 derivative into series production. This aircraft could have been in service by Pearl Harbor.

Northrop F-15 Reporter and XP-61E Day Fighter attached.

(Image is of the F-15 REPORTER; but that used a baled XP-61E to get the program started).

Ok. When the contract was let for the XP-61D Black Widow around 1944, there was a provision that Northrop develop a day-fighter version called the XP-61E.

The -61E didn't get flying until March 1945 due to the feeling that the P-51D was adequate as a bomber escort.

But what if...

Two XP-61Es were completed -- 42-39549 and 42-39557. Clear bubble canopy, cutdown fuselage and a two man crew -- pilot and pilot/navigator.

Four .50 caliber MGs were in the nose in place of the former radar; AND the 4 x 20mm gun tub was still there on the belly.

Would have had 1,158 gallons of internal fuel and 1,240 gallons of external fuel in 4 x 310 gallon tanks giving it a 4,000~ mile combat range; letting it escort the B-29s all the way to and from Japan.

Top speed was 376~ MPH at 17,000 feet.

I'm thinking an appropriate designation would be P-61G Brown Recluse.

The first XP-51E prototype crashed. The second was baled over to become the F-15 Reporter prototype. The USAAF ended up taking delivery of 36 F-15A Reporters out of an order for 175. (War ended)

I don't know if you are still working on this, but I'd like to request a Watanabe WS-103 in Royal Thai Navy markings if you are and are willing to do it. Even finding good references for this one may prove difficult though, so I'll understand if you don't want to take this one up.

For the unintiated, what is the procedure for inserting one of the ship or plane bitmaps into a scenario?

That will work. Sometimes the float-planes are difficult to tell apart.

You have to refer to the bitmap in the record on the aircraft type (use the WitPEditor to look at these by opening a scenario and make the bitmaps visible. Refer to the short doc on the Editor). The bitmap file has to have the same filename format as the others, but if you don't want to replace an existing bitmap, you have to come up with a new filename.

Do any readers of this thread have the desire to create a Naval Buffalo in Aussie and New Zealand colors? Need them for the Treaty and Between the Storms Mods.

John, I haven't done any graphical work in a good while (as you can probably tell from the date of the last posts), however I'd be happy to take a stab at it. Let me see if I can locate some decent Buffalo line drawings, as that is the most important component. I am assuming you just need tops and sides? You'll add those to the database files yourself correct?

Rick

Well, here is my quick rendition of an RAN/RNZN Buffalo. I could not locate a good camo scheme that I thought would have been close to historical. So I went with this:

The other option would be an early USN scheme with Commonwealth markings. HTH,

Rick
