Burma

The Allies roll over the 5th Division one hex North of Moulmein. There will be nothing stopping this steam roller!

China
Our initial attack at Koukok (3 hexes NE of Canton) looks promising. The Allies had broken down a number of their Corps to "fluff up" the number of units. If we are lucky we might be able to take this base.

28 September - 1 October 1942

Thailand

Our withdrawl continues to the South. Can't detect any motion from the Allied side.

China
We cleared up a 1/3rd of a Chinese Corps trying to sit on our supply lines to Kukouk. We will try a deliberate attack this turn at Kukouk.

Banda Sea
No Allied activity detected. We are fast-tran-ing supply to our forward bases and continuing to dig forts.

Production
Starting to shut down some production to save HI points - then will shut down some HI point production to reduce consumption of resources - standard "end of game" operating mode for the Japanese - conserve what you have to stretch things out longer. What we need at last resort is to continue production of supply.

We've converted six Chutai to Tojo - five in the Banda Sea area and one in the Thailand area. Pilot losses have been heavier in the Thailand area so we needed the training time - but going forward the Tojo conversions will be weighted towards the Thai front.

I thought the game was supposed to make it through 1945. I guess you are planning a short game.

HI factories produce 2 supply for every 20 resources. LI factories produce 1 supply for every 15 resources. If you want to save on resources I would shut down some LI factories instead of HI factories. Unless, of course, you are worried about fuel consumption.

Yeah but in our game "1945" has been renamed as "1943"

Looks like your right about the light industry - guess I'd better RTFM some more eh!? As long as I can keep fuel on Honshu, I'll try to keep the HI turned on - but now have turned off some of the LI. Want to see if I can accumulate some resources - have not been able to thus far.

2-3 October 1942

Thailand
The Allied telephone pool has rolled over our speed bump at Moulmein - we retreated towards Rahaeng - so this leaves the coast road to Tavoy open. We have a regiment digging in there.

Banda Sea
Allies are landing at a small dot Solero - where we had a big battle earlier in the war - this dot is about mid way between Darwin and Timor.

China
Our attack at Kukong took the forts down to level-1 but we still only have 1 to 3 odds. Both the 3rd and 4th Airborne regiments are concentrating at Amoy - this will enable back to back airborne attacks in a turn or so.

4-5 October 1942

Thailand

P-38s (50) and B-17s (too many to count) trashed our Tojo Chutai at Tavoy - we lost 6 planes and 2 pilots - Allies suffered no losses.

Banda Sea
One Aussie Co landed at that Selore dot Island.

China
Chinese units continue to advance on our rear areas while we continue to prepare to attack Koukong.

01-02 Nov 1942

Thailand

Our "defense" of Burma has been overrun by Allied telephone pole of 30+ units. Of the six divisions we had in Burma, one, the 55th (two regiments only) is split between Tavoy and Andaman, another, the IG, is cut off and will have to try to walk through the Jungle towards Hanoi. The 5th Division defending along the main Allied axis of Advance will try to withdraw towards Bangkok. The 18th Division is cut off still in Burma, the 33rd and 38th Divisions are in Bankok with the 33rd planning to hold there and the 38th enroute to Singapore.

Lack of air defense hampers any effort to slow the allies down. The "Tojo" airplane seems to die a little slower than the Oscars - but does not shoot things down any better.

Banda Sea
We continue to wonder what the Allies are waiting for in this area - their bombers - probably all skill 99 on bombing by now - can destroy all the supply on the ground even without landing any troops. All the Allies need to do is pick the next base they wish to land on and land on it - whether enemy troops are there or not is mostly irrelevant.

China
Our last offensive thrust against Kukong was stopped - so we are pulling back. We will continue to try to hold in China as long as we can.

Production
In an effort to preserve some production for as long as possible - we are shutting down as much production now as we can. So most aircrarft production is shut down - except for a few critical types. Ship production also - especially expensive types - are shut down. These measures are resulting in a more rapid accumulation of HI points - though Naval and Merchant points are still be accumulated as well. We are also shutting down Naval and Merchant point consumption to slow the consumption of HI. These measures are "normal" activities for Japan in 1944 WITP games, but I am a bit surprised to be putting them in place in 1942!

Air War
The IJA has gone into "minimal coverage" mode on the air war. There seems to be a big difference between having a little bit of air defense and having none. The 4EB (with 99 ground bombing skill) can knock out any air base in one turn - so having lots of planes at one base has been the worst idea. Spreading out a few planes at a lot of bases at least slows things down - and in 1944 (a.k.a. 1942) that is the Japanese goal - slow down the pace of the Allied advance as much as possible.

Joe this just seems too strong for the allies in Burma in 42.

Philippines
Admiral Nik-a-moto has taken command in the PI. We are supporting by moving in troop and supply convoys. Admiral Nik still has three bases to capture before the allies arrive - per the below screen shot.

South East Asia
Our 33rd Division is at Bangkok and our 38th Division is recovering at Saigon. We had thought to send this unit to Singapore but given the proximity of Allied forces to Northern Indo-China we will probably shift the target of this unit to Ha Noi.

Java
We will move the 4th Division to Davao, so Nik will have some troopage.

Banda Sea
We are attempting to pull out our forces just ahead of the Allied landings in this area, in particular at Timor and Ceram.

China
We will make a lunge for Wuchow (NW of Canton) but this will be unlikely to be successful as the Chinese can shift major forces over from Kukong.

Production
Accumulation of Naval Construction enables us to shut down additional naval build factories to continue building up HI. Resource points are really starting to pile up on Honshu now - so this is good!

Guys
I have been following both sides of this AAR for months now. Don't give up on us. I really want to see how your strategy pans out. Its a really interesting concept. Force preservation and not over expanding will make the mid war period in the Pacific very interesting. Just wondering how you plan to stop the offensive out of Burma.
Regards
Andrew

Boela

Allied landing captures this base. Pin-**** attacks by our landbased air (Nells and Sallys) claim 5 torpedo hits on the Idaho - so at least we got something.

Command Changes
About a month ago in game terms - the Japanese command reassigned the PI area to the Navy (Admiral Nikamoto) - efforts to complete the capture of the archepeligo continue.

The Army still commands the SRA, the Asian mainland and Hainan and Formosa (as well as the Western Home Islands - everything West of Tokyo/Yokohama).

The Navy basically commands everything North and East of New Guinea and the PI - inclusive of PI - exclusive of New Guinea.

Not sure what "strategy" you are referring to! As I've indicated in earlier posts - our strategy is a normal late war Japanese PBEM strategy - delay as much as possible.

As indicated in earlier posts - we have no plan to "stop" this steam roller.

Boela

Nik went in this turn with most of KB and got some small stuff - the Allied heavy covering force apparently pulled a "Fletcher" running off for gas. Two medium sized transports and couple of APD with engineers aboard and 4 small ships. Air exchange (across the whole map) was 62 Allied for 54 Japanese.

China
Looks like the Allies are going on the offensive. We see advances in the North, Center and South.

PI
Nik finally took Cebu this turn completing the conquest of the PI just in time. There are still two small Allied held islands in the Formosa Straights - I guess those will be my job to take.

Gilberts
The Allies also took another island in the Pacific - covered by their second carrier force off Chuuk.

Boela

Nik launched a raid by KB into the Boela area. This certainly cleared out the Allied heavy units for a turn or two - but not sure Admiral Nik(a) knew when to quit - especially when we sent our oilers in as a spearhead to attack the Allied surface forces!

Net/net we lost about 140 carrier planes and the KB oiler group in exchange for about 60 Allied land based planes and a few auxillary vessels. A classical "pyhric victory".

China
Our counter-attacks pushed back the Chinese in the South and Center - but failed to nudge them out in the North.

Boela

Allies opened the airbase this turn with some fighters showing. We are continuing to pull back from neighboring islands. Our "Western Fleet" (3xCVE & 2xBB) has relieved Nik's KB in the area.

Thailand
Some of our forces are withdrawing to the South towards Singapore and some towards the East towards Indochina.

Production
Our merchant production had a bottleneck so I shut down some of the tanker production. Our operational bottleneck with convoys is escorts. I've gone down to an average of 2 escorts per 12 merchants and still have >100 merchants idle due to lack of escorts. Occasionally I convert a few PB from AKL but AKL are useful for the smaller ports so don't want to convert them all.

Boela/Amboina

Wow - we had a rare aerial victory over Ceram as our Tojo's knocked down 10 SDB and some P39 and Wildcat. Total score was 31 Allied losses versus 11 Japanese.
