Hi guys. Well i am in the process of downloading the patch and thought id ask for some advice. Can you guys give me some advice on some Task Force configurations? Ive never played a naval wargame before and im quite overwhelmed at the moment :) I'd love to hear what some of your combonations are for the different kind of Task Forces, whats a good combo for an Air Combat TF, Surface Combat TF, Bombardment TF, ect. I really appreciate it guys :) Thanks!

Have you started a game? It would be better to know what you have available, that way the information will be more useful.

For the moment:

CV TF's: There's really three schools of thought here. I try to keep each CV in it's own TF, but in the same hex (they all follow the slowest TF). I recall someone mentioning 2 CV's per TF. The other is to mass your CV's all in one TF.

The advantages and disadvantages are that it's easier to spot larger TF's, but larger TF's coordinate air attacks better. OTOH, larger TF's can fail to strike at all, where a collection of smaller TF's will "average out" on the coordination.

Surface TF's: Not too sure about other people, but I tend to keep them capital ship heavy and rather homogenous. For example, 4 CA, 3 CL, 3 DD; 6 CA, 1 CL, 3 DD; 2 BB, 4 CA 2 DD; 1 CL, 8 DD.

Bombardment TF's: I just try to get as many capital ships into 2-3 groups as I can, and then have them tag-team the base. 3 TF's is best because of the need to refuel them.

What you posted was exactly what i wanted. I am just tring to get some ideas for ship combo's becasue i am not very familiar with naval warfare and therefore do not know the capabilities of alot of the ships in UV, like what is the purpose of an escort carrier? Would i use it like i would the Saratoga or is it more for escorting my destroyers or transports? I just dont have a clue on how to group the ships together. I asume for a TF with a CV i would group the carrier together with a few destroyers and maybe some ships for anti aircraft support...

Arith,

If you have access to some books on the period, the historical TF configurations will work well. I use CVEs for escorting transports in possibly hostile areas, since the CVEs are often not fast enough to keep up with the full CVs or CVLs. Here's an example Allied Air Combat TF from a recent save of mine:

CV
CLAA
BB
CA (w/ Bofors guns)
CA (w/ Bofors guns)
CL (w/ Bofors guns & SG Radar)
DD (w/ Bofors guns & Depth Charges)
DD (w/ Bofors guns & Depth Charges)
DD (w/ Depth Charges)
DD (w/ Depth Charges)

In the earlier scenarios, go for Oerlikons over .50 cals and Bofors over 1.1" AA guns. Look at the ships in port or put more than you need in the TF and then remove those that don't have the ideal configuration for the job.

Regards,

- Erik
