It's no major issue, just an anecdote. If you want to give the Japs and edge by playing Scen 2 there shouldn't be much reason to work overtime to get the P-38 prototypes into the field in January

Oh I agree - the deployable squadron has 2 planes, and about 24 are produced in (IIRC) May. I disagree with any finagling to get more planes from the squadrons in the states that are scheduled to withdraw. Seems gamey to me.

I don't think you can anymore. Perhaps the patches did it but I can't change out the fighters (P38s) in mine and they cannot be withdrawn, just disbanded. Not really sure why I get them. Pool for training pilots I suppose but I have no fighters to fill them out with. So I have one full squadron that I can play with. Big Whoop! Uber or not, Allies do not get the P38 in the same numbers that they did in WITP. You won't be facing them as much. P40k will be the workhorse until mid 1943. P47 comes in around July-August of 43 if I recall. Should be some whupass then! Gamey is something that can affect the game. P38E can't do that.

Anyways, worst case scenario you might see about 40 of these aircraft. I can tell you from my experience with buffalos that unless you have total air superiority, fighters with 3 service rating are a pain in the butt and usually end up getting bombed out sitting in the repair hanger. I don't think enough players understand the importance of service ratings. Truly one of the hidden gems in AE.

JFBs be aware though, most of your late war uber fighters have a service rating of 3. It is not going to be pretty......

Wouldn't call it gamey either, just annoying

My Emily's have a service rating of 3. Send them on 1 mission and repair them for 9 days - great little gem

Receiving lots of aux units in Japan, need to bring these to the perimeter bases and Australia.
Preparing to fight a battle at Tennant Creek. Supply route has been opened up and we got 140 AV and 1 fort there now and 4000 defenders. Think this should be enough to trap the retreating Allied units immediately to the north.

Back to Bandoeng, I didn't think FOW applied to fort levels either, but the 0/2/0 thing made me wonder. Can't remember how many days between attacks there were, but there may have been time to get back to lvl 2. Given that there were 18K supply in the base when you took it I think we see how he re-built so quickly and maintained AV. This is especially true since in AE it seems to take one day to get to lvl 1 forts, which actually seems right as to me this represents the sort of hasty entrenching that any grunt with a shovel was trained to do.

I bombed airfields at Bandoeng each day and it showed constant airfield damage.
- You can ask Andy to confirm.

It was also 2 days between the attacks and fort levels 0 and 2.
At best this means an ability to build 1 fort?

Could you please explain the strategic goal of your foray into Northern Oz? I am not sure I understand what you are trying to accomplish except to keep Andy occupied.

Simple, I have to keep Monter_Trismegistos entertained!

The plan is to put Andy into a difficult tactical position and take advantage of the opportunities this will provide.
If I had sent the KB after my raiders as intended results would already have been in place.

A second main goal is to put Japan in a better strategic position by forcing Andy to spend time in Australia instead of dictating the terms.

There are other sides of this operation that will come into play soon; will be interesting to see if things go according to plan!
- Very possible they will not, but time will show.

Had to struggle to come up with a plan for this game and I'm all out of ideas in the game against you Al.

I do hope to make Andy fight a battle he hasn't fought before and thus challenging him.
Today Baker Island was secured and the Central Pacific perimeter is being expanded slightly.
Will place a base force and a guard unit on central islands and put dive bomber attachments there.

When Andy is strong enough to go onto the offensive the fall of these outer bases will be the first indication.

Another 4 weeks until the Yamato can be completed; she's draining my naval construction points.
Need to make some decision regarding which ship(s) to accelerate when she's completed.
- Either the Taiho or 2-3 of the Katsuragi carriers.

I suggest the Unryus, you get more for less naval points spent. you can accelerate the Taiho after Musashi comes online. Or you could do as I did, and just halt all of your subs and use the spare points to accelerate both.

It was the Unryu's I meant...always refer to them as the "Katsuragis" - same class

- NOW I need some good input!

I agree; and if it were carriers my recon birds would most likely have been shot out of the air without scoring hits on a destroyer. It could be a vanguard force so I'll send some light carriers to check them while taking up a more defensive posture near Canton Island.

Ok here we go; If there are 4 enemy carriers here we will loose some pawns!
- Don't think Andy knows were the KB is, he last spotted them near PM over a week ago so if I were him
I would run..AWAY! That TF is probably a supply / reinforcement TF heading for Canton Isl. Had it arrived a day later....RIP.

What I am pretty certain will happen, is that you'll take a tried and true, rehash it, wash it through the ringer a few times, and then feed it to me with extra chilly.

Or,

You'll figure out a new approach and I'll have to contend with not having the US West Coast or something akin

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Apr 20, 42

Lost yesterdays combat text, but here is a short summary;
- At Baker Island we encountered the AVD Williamson that was promptly sunk by a light cruiser.
Must point out that it is disturbing that the surface task force group didn't engage this ship.
As it is today the invasion TF is the one that encounteres an enemy TF first.

So Baker Island has been secured and the ca 1000 defenders forced to surrender after a short fight.
En enemy tanker? was spotted heading away from the island but no strikes were launched.
The enemy TF spotted yesterday to the NE was also gone.

We proceed to land support troops while sending out scout ships to make sure no enemy carriers are nearby.
I'm using 3 seaplane tenders for this job.

Our little expansion in the Central Pacific continues together with the advance in north eastern Australia.
It will still be 3-4 weeks before we are ready to put Townsville under siege.

A quick review of our troop dispositions:

In Burma we have the 15th Army
Imperial Guards Division
Imperial Guards Tank division (understrength for now)
1 tank brigade
3 tank regiments
1 tank regon regiments
1 infantry Brigade
6 infantry regiments
3 engineer regiments
arty and support units

2 reserve regiments are held in Bangkok and Singapore and some units are in the progress of being shipped in.
Will this force be strong enough to resist an Allied assault in mid to late 1942?

In Australia we have the 21st Army:
2 infantry divisions
7 infantry regiments
6 tank regiments
6 tank recon regiments
4 engineer regiments
arty and support units

Some of these troops are shipping in or advancing towards Tennant Creek and in the Townsville area.
The bulk of these forces will be available to put Townsville under siege.

In the Central Pacific we have a reserve regiment at Truk, 3 crack infantry regiments and numerous special force units
and support troops.

On Java I will keep a divisions worth of troops (2 infantry regiments, special units and detachments).
3 more crack regiments are in Luzon.

Our strategic reserve is made up from the strong 25th Army that just finished of Bandoeng:
4th Division
4th Guards Division
21st Division
6th Guards Division
65th Brigade
4 infantry regiments
3 tank regiments
3 engineer regiments
15 artillery units

= 4 full divisions, 4 inf regiments, 1 inf brigade, 3 tank regiments, 3 engineer regiments and 15 arty units.

Some of these troops will be ear marked to assist with the capture of Townsville; it may become necessary with
a landing to the south, maybe near Rockhampton.

The remaining troops will be used in the next part of Phase II and should commence within a month.
I'm still working out the details.

Quiet in the air in NEW Oz, guess t-storms and battle damage is the cause.
Received a new air HQ today and is considering to sent it to Canton Island - it's a gamle but 60 bombers and fighters
on the base will make it risky for Andy to get close, even with a carrier TF.

Cairns is captured without much ado - Andy abandoned it.
The 50 poor suckers left must have pulled the shortest straws....

NAVAL MOVEMENT PHASE
I-22 unable to launch midget at Melbourne, mission aborted
-> Boring!

Not sure if this means that there are no ships at Melbourne or that I have to try again.
Didn't happen a lot else in this turn; need to build fuel reserves in Truk, Rabaul and Kwajalein.

Great going in OZ there PzB. My only advice is beware aussie light bombers as they have killed a few advance tank units in other AAR's. I doubt that he has many fighters in australia but many bombers. If poss keep LRCAP over advance units. Although to date he hasnt sent anything bar the few B17's he has available. and if you think the service 3 emilys are hard to keep flying the B17's are service 4 and true hangar queens even with light damage.

North autralia does seem to be vulnerable to the Japanese but south autralia (where the industry is) will be another kettle of fish in my opinion. How far are you going to advance? Nice reserves you have too. And even more ambition on your part for Phase 2, I'm already glued to this and will be watching closely.

Great AAR and thanks for taking the time to post.

Always a desk jockey that sneaks into front line command Mynok; the Garrison unit at Palembang doesn't hold top priority though!-)

Hi Rob; I don't think Andy got to many base forces and can only deploy a limited number of ac in Charters Tower and Townsville.
Hopefully those hangar queens tie up much capacity! For now my advance guard will have to fend for themselves as we got other more important missions to perform.

I'm a bit of an opportunits - if the going gets to hard in one direction I change.
Industrial south isn't necessarily an area our troops will occupy but if we can force Andy to make some hard decisions and abandon an importan city we'll be there

I've played Andy in 1943-46, but never in 41-42, so I'm still figuring out his tactics.
In the last AAR game I got bogged down in India - if I stay around Australia there will be much less danger that our outer perimeter will be breached early on.

Yep, but doubt that will happen until I get closer to Brissy!
Don't think Andy will get a lot more B-17 replacements and it will take time for the B-24's to replace them.

Problem:

Need some help here; used an AKV (air transport) to move a Zero unit to Bangkok.
All went well and we have been docked for 3 days in a size 4 port - problem is that the ac refuse to unload

I've tried everything and has now given up and is sending the ships to Saigon to try there in a bigger port.
Afraid my crack Zero unit is trapped on this hunk o' junk :-\

Query: Why use an aircraft transport?
Answer: to avoid moving 40 ac from Tokyo to Rangoon which most likely will cause 4-8 ac and pilots to be ops losses....

As long as Allied subs are no big menace and there is no acute hurry an ac transport is by far the better alternative.
50% of my air losses are ops losses.

Transfer them in smaller hops between large bases. I have found that ops losses most often occur when transferring to smaller bases. Size four and up seems to work OK.

And another thing: you may lose a plane, but you almost never lose a pilot this way. Planes are easy enough to replace (unless they are stuck on a ship and you can't get them off. )

That is far from a guaranteed...I loose ac in small as large hops.
- If the AKV is bugged it needs to be fixed!
