60 fighters including Nicks greeted the enemy bombers when they arrived. We claimed 9 P-39s and only 3-4 4Es.
Would die for a wing of FW-190s and ME-110s with a battery of 4x20 and 30mm guns!

You will get new TONY models in September. With BETTER GUNS! AND RANGE OF 2!

quote:

- The IIb got the punch to take out Thuds but it's hard.
3 Thuds and 2 Hurries claimed; we lost 2 Tojos, another 3 were written of after RTB.

Well, they were beyond Normal Range, so not the best arrangement.

quote:

A remnant trapped near Darwin marched back in; tried to airlift them out with Mavis transports but didn't work.

They are at the coast. Really, you CAN use fast transports. Get some DDs, and choose option "Pick Up Unit". Ships will arrive at night, load what they can, and depart before dawn.

quote:

Enemy warships reported sunk

Also on this list:
91 destroyers (all types)
45 subs (vs 23 Jap)
18 fleet oilers
40 tankers

I would say 58 Tankers, 45 subs, and 91 DDs are pretty good score.
How many transports? 500?

quote:

Total: 950 ac

So we're already heavily outnumbered!

And Allies have better fighters!
As you can see, you were happier without that calculations.
Also, Allied CVs are completely passive lately, so numbers do not mean much obviously.

In one of my PBM's I am seeing certain lines in the total air losses column vary up and down from one day to the next by around 20%.

Looks, that there is FOW for daily loses, and another, different FOW, for total loses

My guess is that European and Pacific fronts are best abstracted in different ways, and we will probably not see a WiEurope in the style and depth of AE. Time will tell.

Try Western Front: The Liberation of Europe 1944-1945.
WITP is already upgraded version, War in Russia get "upgrade" recently, so WF is next in line.

quote:

Line Islands again? I would doubt it, too predictable.

Not, that Allies have much choice. It is Line Islands, Port Moresby/Guadalcanal, or Timor. No other options.
Well, OK, there are other options, but they are muuuuuch riskier.

Can anyone explain that "accelerated pilot training" message?

That is exactly what pilots in TRACOM do.
And this Wildcat over Palmyra, is recon version, but I am wondering if it have enough range to fly from Hawaii.

I have to admit I was a teensy bit concerned about the "Emperor's dingle" comment a few posts back.

If Andy's going for the Line Islands again you have to give him an A for pure stubbornness. I concur that the Palmyra flight is the recon version, while sighting Dauntlesses near Efate is more likely to be a true CV sighting (but not definite as they could be land based, of course). The whole PH build up and recon flights could be a big diversion, who knows? Diversions aren't really Andy's style but he must be tired of failed invasions and maybe is trying something new.

maybe after reading your message he decided to bait you with a diversion thinking you were on alert

To use the "pick up" option for fast transports the troops need to be at a base, not?
Not had motivation to count enemy AKs and APs sunk lately, would have been so easy to include a counter in the lists

We now have the Tony 1c in production, same range 4 normal, 5-6 extended. New model got gun value 16 instead of 14, upgrades to 2x12,7mm and 2x20mm cannons.
Not to bad against fighters and medium bombers but still not good enough against 4Es - especially not with those short legs.

Sometimes it's good to step back and try to get a better overview of the situation! I tend to forget how many CVEs the US get and Andy loves (to waste)them.
In fleet carriers alone we're almost at parity.

I have spotted numerous TFs with CV and BBs in PH; pretty sure some of these spottings are correct.
What is the Wildcat recon model's range, can they be flown from Johnston Island?

Yes, I know TRACOM is supposed to accelerate training but this is the first time I've seen any results and I'm not that much wiser.
266 pilots accelerated one training cycle? Since they stop training at a crappy 30-40 exp it's really not that much to cheer about.

No worries Cribtop

Maybe, the entire Efate and Luganville affair was just a diversion for me.
That Andy is sending in a full scale invasion force to defeat 150 paras must be a good deal no matter what
- I'm not going to crash into something without getting more intel first.

Air Production Numbers

As you can see quite a few of the factories are turned off.
Important not to overproduce as that will have serious consequences later in the war.

Nope. You will see loooong list of all available units. This option is exactly for evacuation.

Yup. Not very useful feature.

So you upgraded all TOJO factories?

The last of the options is assault from Fiji into Canton/Baker. But for it, Allies would have to transfer forces from USA, or Australia.
Both Timor, and New Guinea have much Japan airbases, so still, Line Islands seems to be safest bet.
Eventually Midway, but conquering it do not change strategic situation.

Ah yes, I examined and confirmed this Inq! Hadn't seen the (hex xx,xx) pickups before. Learn something all the time
Yep, the Tojo factories auto upgraded after some time and I have lots of the old version in the pools.

I think Andy is trying to draw me south towards Efate; would have been nice to squash that invasion force but we were just not in
position to do so this time. There are still huge TFs reported at PH - next few days will show if they sortie.

So the Efate invasion convoy goes in and starts unloading!
- I ordered ca 50 Nells and Betties based around Guadalcanal to strike from 17 hexes.
They all had orders to launch torpedoes.

To my (and probably Andy's) surprise they took off and attacked the invasion force.
A Wildcat CAP failed to materialize, think they come from Tanna 3 hexes to the south together with the SBDs.

In the first attack we sank 2 loaded transports plus a destroyer.
To my annoyance the Nells bombed from 15k feet instead of using torps.

In the PM phase much the same happened, but this time all ac carried torpedoes (can anyone explain this, when I checked the Air HQ still had 40 torps available and all bombers were ordered
to carry torps within normal range ). This was one of those attacks were all ac just slided past the targets, I immediately knew they wouldn't hit anything.
- But that's almost a 1000 lost troops today.

Tomorrow there will most likely be CAP over the ships so I pull back the Betties and Netties; they would fall down in droves unescorted.

It's sister arrives in 3 days; will downgrade the "next gen" Jills and Zekes onboard that ship to provide replacements for the ones on Unryu.

The naval attack routine will sometimes choose bombs over torps if the targets are considered "low value", regardless of the settings. I think this was a measure designed to reduce the previous uberness of the Netties.

From the Unryu Class write-up

". . . in fact the whole class was a crash curse in carrier construction."

The Shinano may have been cursed, the Unryu's also in regard to being completed late enough in the war to become nothing but targets!

Can that be so, overruling torp settings to drop bombs?
If someone did something like that to Allied ac they'd be lynched!

The biggest problem with switching ordnance is that the bombers have to drop to lower altitudes to bomb effectively.
Sailing in at 15k feet ensures that they won't hit a thing..so in this case there should be 2 settings; one altitude for bombing runs and one if armed with torpedoes.

A raider intercepts a convoy; after a shootout with the Taney (5" guns) the raider has to withdraw with moderate damage.
A tanker is torched and 3 other ships reported hit.

Been fleshing out the airgroups aboard the Unryu today; Looks like 30 fighters, 20 Judys and 18 Jills will be the complement.
That's 68 ac, a slight overstacking (63 ac standard) but well within the 15% limit (9 ac).

We now got 10 engineer and construction units ready to ship out to build bases and fortifications.
They will mainly go to the area between New Guinea to Sumatra. As soon as the outer line of defenses and forts are completed the engineers are
moved into the interior to build forts and bases we still not have had capacity to develop.

My big challenge is that I really need to divide a division into 10 sub units (430 / 10 = 43 AV would have been perfect).
Don't have enough small sized LCUs to garrison the myriad of important bases in Malaya, Philippines etc. Anyone have a good receipt for how I can divide a large LCU
into equal smaller units?

The single raider was actually just one of many!

I have launched a major raider campaign in the Central Pacific to disrupt Allied shipping.
A large AK acting as a replenishment ship, 2 AMCs and 2 light cruisers sortied from Midway and the Line Islands and easily made it into the Central Pacific!

This turn we engaged the Taney again with a dedicated warship and she is left sinking; still only one AK was shot up.
Another raider intercepted another group of ships but they managed to escape before taking serious damage.

However, the chase continues!

Those 5 inch guns Taney was shooting at you probably still had that new gun smell on them. According to Wikipedia:
Taney operated locally out of Honolulu into 1943 before sailing for Boston late that winter. Prior to heading for the east coast, the ship received a re-gunning at Mare Island, being fitted with four single-mount, 5-inch guns, making her the only ship in her class with this modification.

Indeed

Those "little ship" stories you come over when playing WitP are always fascinating!!

This turn we had a naval battle!
First our raiders finished of a damaged AK but failed to connect with the rest of the fleeing ships.
At Darwin however, I spotted some surface vessels and wondered how Andy managed to sneak them past my blokade.
So I sent a not to crack surface force made up of old CL Natori and a hodge podge force of available destroyers to sink them.

The problem was that the 4 Allied destroyers were lead by the light cruiser Leander..which put 2 torps and some 6" shells into poor Natori from
close range and sank her outright. In a running fight numerous hits were landed but only a Dutch destroyer was set ablaze before our destroyers left the fight.

So we need to find a more potent way of dispatching the Leander & CO!

Some intel:

A recent recon report from Pearl - major enemy activity!

The KB is now reinforced and consists of 9 fleet and 4 light carriers.
Another Unryu arrives in 45 days while the Shinano arrives in 3 months.

Was looking at possible destroyer leaders; the Oyodo is definetly not one without tower armor
Guess the job has to go to the older Nagara cruisers and the newer Agano class.

I really think you are making a mistake. You need to be closer to your lines of communication. Fighting a big battle in the middle of the central pacific in late 43 as Japan is really reckless.

This is true - on principle. But you have to consider the mentality of AndyMac. After reading both AAR Andy remembers me on the british FM Montgomery and so this move can pay dividends.

I would opt for a battle even at an non perfect location. The time when it happens is important. It is September 43, right now you just face hellcats but in 1-2 months Andy would be able to put quite a lot of corsairs on his carriers. And corsairs are quite a bit stronger than hellcats.

Unlike in WITP F6F are just marginal better than the A6M5 so a fight is not automatically lost. The F4U-1 is a little different story. They are not unkillable super protection but they will shift the odds a little bit more against you. You did quite a job in this AAR and i am really impresses how long japan can dominate if they win a carrier clash and the opponent is at least sometimes a little careless. As far as i remember until the end of the year the allied get 1more CV and 3 CVL. At the begin of 44 they will get 3 or 4 CV until mid March.

And that is the point where the allied carrier force gets very strong, even with your won clash. And from that point on KB gets a little bit obsolete so fight with it as long as you have carrier parity. And if Andy does not move his carriers in a favorable position for you until first quarter of 44 KB will be much weaker than now.

Use it or lose it ... :)

Putting Corsairs on carriers is far easier said than done. You get 75 of them per month and if you equip your carriers with them, you won´t have them for your Marine squadrons. Other than the British carriers, none of my carriers field Corsairs and I´m in 5/44 already. The Hellcat works just fine for me as in two out of three cases my carrier squadrons have to fight as Cap and they work very well against everything the Japanese got at this stage. If you field more than 1000 fighters on your carriers the Hellcats work just fine.

And don´t only think about CV/CVL, also keep the three dozen CVE in mind. The CVE alone carry more Hellcats than the Japanese got carrier based Zekes. The only advantage of the Japanese I still see in 44 is the fact that they can launch from 8 hexes range while the Allied are stuck with 7. Up to 44 I also saw their torpedo bombers as a big advantage.

Hmm, any time I see "After reading Both AAR", I get a little nervous about OpSec. As an avid AAR reader I might be a little jumpy though.

The naval attack routine will sometimes choose bombs over torps if the targets are considered "low value", regardless of the settings.

I would say it was "not enough torpedoes at HQ" case, but PM strike was even bigger, and had full torpedo complement. Anyway, If HQ is set to 40, there seems to be too much planes for this number.

10 identical cargo ships should get equal amount of troops.

That depends of definition of word "escorting". There is probably 200 combat ships at PH, and most of them, I am guessing, do not have maxed out experience (especially night). There should be enough ships in convoys to sink even large raider group, but seems they are just sitting in port.
